This document provides guidelines for using articles (a/an or the) with different types of locations and institutions. It states that no article is used with street or place names, transportation hubs, universities, shops named after people, churches, or generic references to institutions. The definite article "the" is used with entertainment venues, hotel and restaurant names, specific places in town, shop names focusing on the building, and references to institutions focusing on the building.

2. We use no article with:
 A street or road: Oxford Street / Fifth Avenue
 An airport or train station: Gatwick Airport / Charring
Cross Station
 A university: Cambridge University / London University
 A shop or bank named after people: Barclays Bank /
McDonald’s / Harrod's
 A church or cathedral: St Martin’s Church / St Paul’s
Cathedral
 A school, college, church, prison when we are not
focusing on the peculiar one: He was sent to prison. She
goes to school.
 A hospital, university, etc. when we think of the
purpose of the institution, not the building:
He’s in hospital.

3. We use the with:
 A type of entertainment: We went to the cinema /
the theatre / the opera / the disco.
 The name of a hotel and restaurant: The Hilton /
The Sheraton
 Some places in town: the bank, the post office, the
toilet, the doctor’s, the dentist’s.
 Names of shops: the baker’s, the grocer’s,
the supermarket, the chemist, the butcher’s,
the hairdresser’s.
 With words like college, hospital, prison, when we
are focusing on the building:
The school is nearly falling down. Mom is visiting
Dad in the hospital.
