through the activity.
Introduce the GIS activity & skills:
- Students need to be in their groups of 2-3; one taking notes
about software procedures, the others about content issues
and the types of questions they will be addressing.

Include specific examples:
- Model the types of questions students can ask
through the software.
- Walk through specific GIS skills students
will be expected to apply (use of pop-ups,
filtering data, changing symbols, etc.) as
you and your student partner address a
question like those the rest of the class will
explore in their groups.

Give clear expectations about software โ€œHelpโ€:
- Use your notes, use one another
- Last resort - ask your teacher
- Use available sources of online help:

Remember your role as teacher in the lab:

- Model the use of questions that force students to
restate/modify their thoughts:

โ€ข โ€œWhat would you expect the data to say if your hypothesis is right โ€ฆ ?โ€
- Reinforce positive group behavior
โ€ข Make sure that group roles are shared
โ€ข โ€œGreat question,โ€ โ€œWhat a good point,โ€ etc.
โ€ข โ€œYou seem to have a difference of opinion. How do you test?โ€

reasoning and possible errors
