Political And Media Systems And Ownership Practices
In an increasingly globalized and mediated environment, there is an evident rise in awareness
towards the emerging transnational news sphere, as well as the journalistic practices that are
outside of Western media domains with issues of global importance becoming more salient than
ever. These ideas have been explored through the readings as both papers describe certain
characteristics of both political and media systems and ownership practices of news organizations
to gain insight into the implications of global journalism. Whilst Hellman and Reigert focus on
conceptualizing the transnational news sphere, Chakravartty and Roy present a comparative
approach to exploring diversity in journalism through examining the intranational divergences
within the Indian political and media system (Chakravartty and Roy 2013, p.357).
Hellman and Reigert express global journalism as a reporting style that sought to unite people
through identifications that permeate national boundaries, through common human rights or
interests , hence their focus on global crisis journalism (Hellman and Reigert 2012, p.163). Through
exploring the nature of global crisis journalism, Hellman and Reigert question whether there is a
responsibility for journalists to promote what it means to be a citizen of the world through
providing equal coverage of crisis that are within areas that are considered remote by Western
standards. This challenges current practices within national/local journalism, in

Should Human Cloning Ever Be Pursued In The Future
I do not think that human cloning should ever be a field that is pursued in the future by scientists.
There are a multitude of problems that arise with the idea of cloning. Even if doctors were able to
eliminate those risks, the process of cloning a human being would remain an odd one. The human
population would cease diversity and uniqueness in all areas. Since the cloningprocess involves
taking genes and creating identical ones, all beings would begin to look and be the same. With a
lack of differentiation throughout the humanrace, might lead to higher competition in areas like
school, careers, athletics, etc., and could infringe on a person s freedoms and rights of being
individualistic. I agree with many other people that the genetic

The New York House Of Refuge
The New York House of Refuge was the first juvenile reformatory in the nation. It began as a
product of a humanitarian association. Organized in 1815, it was originally called the Society for
the Prevention of Pauperism. The Reverend John Stanford founded this Society. During the year
1820 and continuing through the middle of 1821, the Society completed a survey of the United
States prisons. Upon completion, the Society then appointed a committee to study the findings.
The report the committee put out criticized the treatment and the handling of prisoners. It also
showed great remorse for the imprisonment of individuals regardless of age or the severity of
crime. After the report was adopted in 1824, reorganization was called for by the Society, for the
purpose of establishing a reformatory. After the Society for the Prevention of Pauperism ceased to
exist as an organization in 1823, the Society for the Reformation for Juvenile Delinquents took its
place.(Pickett, 1969) Even though the New York House of Refuge was managed privately, the State
of New York was involved form the beginning. It participated in establishing inmate commitment
procedures, developing treatment programs, funding and in the organization process for the
program. Members of the Society appointed a thirty member Board of Managers. Meeting weekly
as the policy making section, an Acting Committee, consisting initially of five and later seven
Board members was also implemented. Appointed by the Acting

And by a distinction between the seasons which is due to God s arrangement, set aside some for

Why Is Field Artillery Important
Field Artillery traces its history back to 1775. However, artillery as we know it today is a proud
profession that traces its origins and honorable traditions to centuries before the birth of Christ
(Unknown). In the 18th century Frederick the Great of Prussia began mounting cannoneers on the
backs of horses. This in turn gave the Field Artillery great mobility and the ability to accompany
cavalry. With the development of trucks, horse artillery and horse drawn artillery evolved into the
towed artillery, as we know today (Unknown). The American field artillery has answered the call to
arms in every major war and conflict, evolving our technology, equipment, and cannoneers to
employ these changes in battle. The American Field Artillery was born November 17, 1775, when
Henry Knox, a 26 year old self taught artilleryman, appointed to Chief of the Continental Artillery
(Unknown). In August of 1775, a New York militia company on Manhattan Island confiscated 21
original nine pounders. Fifty nine cannons were on Dorchester Heights and Nook s Hill
overlooking Boston by March 2 1776. General Washington ordered the bombardment of the city,
and thus began the traditions of the American Field Artillery (Unknown). The remaining action

The Americans used artillery in several ground engagements when fighting the bulk of the War at
sea. The artillery during this time consisted mostly of six pounders. Large caliber size howitzers

establishment of an artillery training camp at Camp Washington and later established four light
batteries; one for each of the four artillery regiments at the time. Major Ringgold s battery, the
fourth light battery, was equipped with the new light 6 pounder and was the only true horse artillery

Urban Growth Management and Politics
Urban Growth Management and Politics
Being a urban planner is an exciting career field to work in. There are countless opportunities to
create innovative ideas that can change a struggling city into a beautiful and exciting place for
residents and tourist. However, when it comes to managing urban growth, planning becomes a more
complicated process. Part of the problem is the difficulty in balancing the task of growth
management and politics. Planners must find sensible ways to manage growth while being mindful
of the political aspects that interfere with planning.
Growth management is an important part of urban planning. As defined by John M. Levy, author of
Contemporary Urban Planning, growth management is defines as, ... Show more content on

Many of the proponents for growth management are supportive of the legislation because they
believe in the safe management of their land and resources.
However, there are many not supportive of the legislation of growth management for various
reasons including government control. As quoted in the attitudes toward growth management
publication, the system has also been criticized for placing the state in the role of a command and
control entity, rather than the role of a facilitator and advisor to localities on planning issues
(Connerly, 2004). While there remains to be a great number of supporters for growth management,
many Florida residents are not in support of government intervention. The citizen s stance against
too much government control brings focus on the political aspect of urban planning and growth
management.
There are many problems that can arise with an the unmanaged growth of within communities
across the world. According to the works of , Robert F. Durant, Larry W. Thomas, and Don Hayes,
authors of, The Politics of Growth Management Reform in the States: A Comparative Analysis,
Urban Sprawl can be a burden to communities. For example, The quality of life in numerous states

Car Lockout Statistics
In our age of enhanced security, a locksmith is a very valuable person. Few people can say they
haven t used the services of one at some point or another. Our homes, workplaces and even cars

would need the services of an emergency locksmith to come, quite literally, with the key to your

The Pros And Cons Of Forgiveness
According to Mc CuUough, Pargament, Thoresen, 2000, social scientists have adopted many
conceptualization of forgiveness, alternatively characterizing the construct as an emotion, a
decision, a behaviour, and a motivational change. According to Worthington (2001), Forgiveness is
defined as the emotional replacement of (1) hot emotions of anger or fear that follow a perceived
hurt or offense, or (2) unforgiveness that follows ruminating about the transgression, by substituting
positive emotions such as unselfish love, empathy, compassion, or even romantic love.
Forgiveness is a concept with philosophical, theological and psychological implications. As greater

Pro and Cons of Forgiveness
We can gain some benefits from forgiveness. One of the benefits of forgiveness is that it is good
for our heart. This is because when we try to forgive other people, we can train our heart to be
more patience when we are dealing in some issues in our daily life. Besides that, forgiveness also
can always train us to be more forgiven people rather than someone who hold revenge towards
others, which is not good for our heart. It can cause the hatred within our heart. According to Siromi
(2012), forgiveness reflects our heart attitude towards God and the person who sinned.
In this context, we can forgive, because there are two components to forgiveness which is
attitudinal and transactional. Before we approach the person who sinned against us, we must
approach God and battle to have a forgiving and merciful heart. To forgive someone, we really
need to be sincere so that there would not be revenge that particular individual. We have to make
sure that our heart is ready to forgive that person and we really mean it. Thus, we will be very
easy and the peaceful finally be with us. Our heart will be in peace because there is no more
hatred and we can go through our life happily. So, the forgiveness is really good for our heart. It
trains us to be more patient in order to deal with person who did wrong to us. It also gives us a

The Rise and Fall of Rome Essay
The rise and fall of one of the greatest empires known to man, the Roman republic, were caused
by several key factors. Three of which were the decline of monarchy within the empire, foreign
conquests and expansion of the growing empire, and political battles between powerful officials.
The decline of monarchy which caused the rise of the republic was caused by the expulsion of the
last Etruscan king. An ancient Roman tale tells of how the last Etruscan king, Tarquinius Superbus,
was driven from his thrown. The tale tells of how after his son, Sextus, raped a beautiful and
virtuous women, Lucretia. After she was raped she told her husband what had happened, after that

Censors were elected by the centuries. The censor s task was to enroll each citizen in their tribe,
and place them in a social class century according to their property assessment. In time the
censors acquired the power to revise the list of senators according to their financial and moral
worth. Soon the judicial functions of censors were assigned to a praetor, an official first elected in
367 B.C by the centuries. Praetorships eventually increased in number. The consuls inherited much
of the king s responsibilities, but did not inherit his religious duties. His religious responsibilities
passed to the Rex sanctorum. But in time the Pontifex Maximus became the leading and most
important religious official. The pontiffs were the caretakers of the unwritten law. They were also
in charge of the states religious equilibrium, with the help of the augers. The augers took the
auspieces, watching the heavens for signs from the gods that they favored an undertaking. The
augers possessed considerable influence of the course of events in Rome, because nothing of
public importance was initiated without consulting the auspices. The priestly offices in ancient
rome were highly sought after by aristocrats because of their religious importance and political
influence. As early as 501 B.C (according to tradition) the position of dictator was introduced to

The Effects Of The Seebeck Effect
Introduction
1.1 Seebeck Effect
When two ends of a conductor are held at different temperatures electrons at
the hot junction at higher thermal velocities diffuse to the cold junction. Seebeck
discovered that making one end of a metal bar hotter or colder than the other produced
an EMF between the two ends. He experimented with junctions (simple mechanical
connections) made between different conducting materials. He found that if he created
a temperature difference between two electrically connected junctions (e.g., heating
one of the junctions and cooling the other) the wire connecting the two junctions
would cause a compass needle to deflect. He thought that he had discovered a way to
transform thermal energy into a magnetic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
вћў TH and TC are the hot and cold thermocouple temperatures, respectively, in ok.
The reverse of the Seebeck effect is also possible: by passing a current through two
junctions, you can create a temperature difference. This process was discovered in
1834 by scientist named Peltier, and thus it is called the Peltier effect. This may sound
similar to Joule heating described above, but in fact it is not. In Joule heating the
current is only increasing the temperature in the material in which it flows. In Peltier
effect devices, a temperature difference is created: one junction becomes cooler and
one junction becomes hotter. Although Peltier coolers are not as efficient as some
other types of cooling devices, they are accurate, easy to control, and easy to adjust.
Peltier effect devices are used coolers for microelectronic devices such as
microcontrollers and computer CPU. Peltier found there was an opposite phenomenon
to the Seebeck Effect, whereby thermal energy could be absorbed at one dissimilar
metal junction and discharged at the other junction when an electric current flowed
within the closed circuit. the thermocouple circuit is modified to obtain a

Some effects may be that they may not remember things that they have done days ago but they
may clearly remember things such as World War Two. This may have an effect on a person s self
esteem as they will be noticing the change in their behaviour and memory and it will make them
think about what has changed and because of their short memory they may get worried that
something bad has happened to them but they cannot remember. It can also effect self esteem and
a person s confidence because if they lose the ability to communicate and understand what people
are saying to them they may shut down and just ignore everyone that they come into contact with

Spirited Away Analysis
In Hayao Miyazaki s breathtaking film, Spirited Away we are introduced to 10 year old Chihiro
and her parents who stumble upon a seemingly abandoned amusement park. After her mother and
father turn into giant pigs, Chihiro meets the mysterious Haku, who explains the park is a resort
for the supernatural beings who need a break from the earthly realm, and that she must work there
to free herself and her parents. Our young protagonist is shown to be a childish, easily scared, and
whiny girl. But after her experiences at the bathhouse and the Spirit World, she will mature into a
capable adult. Chihiro s growth into a capable individual is a core factor to the movement of
Spirited Aways plot.
Spirited Away begins with a quick paced car ride in which we meet the young protagonist, Chihiro.
A melancholy child whom ironically holds a bouquet of bright flowers to her chest, which we learn
was a farewell gift from her friend on Chihiro s moving day. Chihiro and her parents stumble upon a
ominous tunnel as they search for their new home. The tunnel lures Chihiro s parents inside,
causing the young child to quickly rush and cling to her mother in fear of being alone, like any
child would. Upon entering the Spirit World, they stumble upon a festive amusement park that has
seemingly just been abandoned. During this scene Chihiro s parents morph into gluttonous pigs,
consumed by their own greed and hunger upon eating offerings that were meant for the spirits.

Ethnocentrism in Today s Church
ETHNOCENTRISM IN THE CHURCH TODAY
Introduction
Ethnocentrism is the act of seeing one s ethnic tribe better compared to those of the others. This
stereotype has with time crept into the religious foundation irrepressibly. Currently, the church is
experiencing a wave of ethnocentrism which if not curbed will see a religious waiver. Overall
researches locally and internationally prove that ethnocentrism is an ant to the timber pillar
supporting the church; with time it will eat into it and cause a major downfall.

Manifestation and Effects of Ethnocentrism

organizations. The latter is propelled by the fact that ethnic ... Show more content on

Indirectly, this vice makes the Christians fail to be the light of the world as God requires of us,
consequently making us sinners. Due to division of church members and split ups over the recent
past caused by ethnocentrism, there has been an impulsive opening of many churches. The split ups
have brought about many mysterious religious denominations that have distorted and biased the
gospel truth. The distortion of the gospel is what has instigated mushrooming of many cult
churches that teach contrary to the word of God. Ethnocentrism has therefore instigated the
existence of false teachings most of which are bound to transform their members into ardent devil
flocks.
As it is the responsibility of the church to oversee events even those that are outside the clerical
premises running successfully, it s of late failing. Henceforth, ethnocentrism of such nature keeps
lagging the nation from completing the political metamorphosis it started since independence.
The Pauline epistles dwell much on the issue of ethnocentrism in the church, since the vice was
present in the early church. In 1st Corinthians chapter 1 4, Paul talks about church divisions and
says that they are a mark of spiritual immaturity. Thus Christians should not be at daggers drawn
with each other but be in harmony and in unity as one body of Christ. Paul goes on to condemn the

Through the reading of Temples and Ceremonies we are informed that all people engage in
sacrifice. In fact All people engaged in auto sacrifice at some point in their lives, usually to
petition the gods for agricultural or human fertility (MAI Reader, 77). This connects to the theme
in the myth of people committing acts of sacrifice in order to fill obligations for their well being
we can deduce that since all people engaged in...sacrifice (MAI, 77) that people within the Aztec
society viewed sacrifice as a duty and the norm . Carassaco s text elaborates on the concept of
the reasoning and act of sacrifice. Ancestors carrying out sky watching, prayer, ceremonies, and
ritual sacrifices to their gods. (Carrasco, 26) This imposes that the Aztecs sacrifices were solely
for their gods and their benefit. When the Spanish came to conquer the Aztecs they too realized
the sacrifice occurring within the society. Bernal de Castillo one of Hernan Cortez s men recorded
in a journal his personal experience with asking about sacrifice. Then Diaz del Castillo added a
provocative and enigmatic passage about human sacrifice and cannibalism in relation to the feast
(Carrasco, 6). This shows that people (even outsiders) were well aware of the significance of
sacrifice within the Aztec society. We also see record from another first hand account of the Aztecs
and their relationship to sacrifice. Bernardino de Sahagun writings states that the Aztecs carried out
human sacrifice within a large, more complex ceremonial system in which a tremendous amount of
energy, wealth and time was spent (Carrasco, 63). This shows how crucial sacrifice was within the

SOAP
SOAP first came into being in 1998 after being developed by Microsoft, however, it was not until
SOAP version 1.2 was released in June 2003 that SOAP became a World Wide WebConsortium
(W3C) Recommendation. This is also where SOAP ceased to be known as Simple Object Access
Protocol and remains to this day as SOAP.
The main reason for its development was to supersede some of the older communication
technologies that weren t as effective when being used across the internet such as Distributed
Component Object Model (DCOM) and Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA)
SOAP is a communication protocol that utilises Extensible Mark up Language (XML) to define the
messaging framework and send messages from one application to another via other protocols such
as Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and Simple Mail Transfer Protocol.
It can be used in conjunction with Web Services Description Language (WSDL). This language
is for the descriptions of web services and how to go about locating and accessing them. As with
SOAP, WSDL is also XML based. WSDL is also a W3C Recommendation.
A SOAP message has four main elements. These elements are an; envelope, header, body, and a
fault element. See Fig 1 for a visual breakdown of the SOAP message structure.

Hero Journey Comparison Contrast Essay A hero is often thought as someone who saves lives
and does admirable acts. This is not always the case as we see in The Count of Monte Cristo,
where Edmond Dantes is wrongly accused of a crime and sent to imprisonment for life. He is
stripped of his freedom and all he owns and rises to the top with only a goal in mind that he
keeps dear to his heart. In The Alchemist, Santiago seeks to find treasure and on his journey, he
finds his true love. This is very similar to The Odyssey when Odysseus is on the desperate search

The Firefly Hunt
For decades, writing has been a way for authors to create byproducts of themselves and portray
their alike qualities within what the outside world would like to consider fictional characters. It s
not uncommon to the writing world of novels and prestigious narratives take Stephen King for
example: although he didn t hide his motives as he used his original name in Songs of Susannah,
he introduced himself into the plot nonetheless, creating a familiar atmosphere where realism was
incorporated into a dream. When reading short stories like Red Cranes by Jacey Choy and The

Like the reader, authors can get lost in their words and find themselves in the shoes of someone
they are fabricating. This recycles their thought process, which ultimately forces them to reword
their fears and doubts in order for the reader to connect with their tone. In a passage of Red
Cranes, Choy forms her character, Mie, to ask questions despite her underlining terror of
receiving a scolding in response. For a young girl in Japan, practicality was the only way to
survive, and when Mie voiced her thoughts of imagining herself on the back of a red crane, flying
high in the air (p.4), her mother disregarded her wild ideas for a young girl (p.13), and in return,
told her to focus on her reading and writing. It s a contrast to the way Sachiko freely thought inside
of her mind, holding the dreamer at bay inside of her. Instead, her silent thoughts were incorporated
into the description of her surroundings, where the air was dreamy and calm with nature s natural
light fluttering around her. Both girls are visionaries, but they are lost in different reveries. While
both authors might have experienced the need to love the world at every single angle, their
characters and perhaps the nonfictional result of the writers themselves found different paths to

A. R. Ammons And Clearances Essay
These two elegies are written by different people that reveal a personal experience and reactions
towards loss, death, change, and nature. These themes are prevalent because the speaker wants
the reader to acknowledge and understand how human beings can conflict pain on their selves by
not changing and letting go of the past. Nonetheless, there are differences between these two
elegies by the year it was written. The two elegies are Easter morning by A. R. Ammons and
Clearances by Seamus Heaney, and the poem is carefully designed to emphasize on their situation

life he could have had, or the path he could have taken, and the loss of his childhood. The
speaker uses nature to present to the audience that everything in life changes, yet, it is hard on
him because he recalls on memories. The speaker knows he struggles with change because he
keeps on going to the grave and asking the same questions of what was wrong or what went
wrong. This indicates how guilty the speaker feels, for he did not notice a cry for help. Stanza one

Wearable Technology And Its Target Consumers
Unlike traditional desktop computers, wearable technologies encourage the user to interact with the
technology any place, any time, and for any duration. The anywhere, anytime nature of interaction
with wearables makes it possible to form intimate bonds with the technology. (Ashbrook, Lyons,
Clawson, Starner, 2010) Wearable technology devices collect data /information from sensors in
order to track, monitor, and analyze things such as motion and physical activity, calories burned,
sleep patterns, heart rate, breathing, other biometric measures, etc. The data collected can then be
applied to analysis of individual health, fitness, business, and more. It is important to recognize that

Smartwatches are another type of device that uses wearable technology and sensors to collect,

or linked to an active smartphone in order to provide the most benefits other than telling time. A
smartwatch is like having a mini smartphone/computer on your wrist. Once a smartwatch is
connected to a smartphone, users can choose what notifications to get on the wearable device
things like messages, emails, calls and apps, GPS, music, and social networks. (Martin, 2014) As
the case with the activity trackers, functionality and technology will vary depending on the type of
smartwatch device. There is a wide array of smartwatches currently available to consumers and
include smartwatch products offered by top companies like Google, Samsung, Sony, and Motorola.
Apple Inc. recently announced in September 2014 that they would be entering the wearable device

The Dream Argument Of Rene Descartes
Final (704935286) The Dream Argument of Rene Descartes is a philosophical skeptical
argument used by Descartes himself to put into doubt the existence of any knowledge he has
gained from his sense. There have been many interpretations of Descartes Dream Argument by
different philosophers, and one notable example is that of Barry Stroud s example. Stroud, in his
Problem of the External World, describes the Dream Argument as an argument where we must
know we are dreaming if we are to know anything about the world around us (Stroud 30). This
reading by Stroud describes the Dream Argument as an altered form of an argument from
ignorance, which would have a general formulation as such: To know any O (ordinary
proposition), I must have prior and independent knowledge of not SH (skeptical hypothesis). I do
not have prior knowledge of not SH. Therefore, I do not know O. For the Dream Argument, the
skeptical hypothesis argues that our current perceptions of the world using our senses are that of a
dream. Stroud argues that Descartes intends on using such a skeptical hypothesis as a pre condition
of being able to know anything with our senses. However, it is the aim of this paper, through
discussing Stroud s interpretation of Descartes Dream Argument to argue that maintaining such a
reading of the Dream Argument ensures that if one agrees with the premise a condition of knowing
anything about the world is that he knows he is not dreaming (21), the radical skeptic would have

Social Movements and Trends
Women have always fought for the right of equality and control of their bodies. Many instances
occurred throughout history that supported a woman s fight for equal representation and fair
legislation, especially for those who were impoverished. This paper will discuss three articles from
1968 to 1977 that outline women s battles against the government and the legal system regarding
abortion and sterilization. The article details instances in which the government pursued unlawful
sterilization as a form of birth control, or denied public funding to poverty stricken women who ...

Not only was birth control taboo, but so was any form of unnatural contraception outside of the
rhythm method. Sterilization was disapproved, and refused to women as a means of birth control
by many hospitals at the time (New York Times, 1971). Women were discouraged from
embracing the idea to exercise control relating to when they would stop having children. This
proved to be yet another form of unfair judgment forced upon women by uninformed officials. The
New York Civil Liberties Union was notified to help Mrs. Caparelli fight this method of
inappropriate control by hospital officials (New York Times, 1971).
Article Three: Abortion Cutoff Causing Hardship For Poor Women Around Country
This final article explains that the government refuses to pay for abortions of women dependent
upon public assistance (Roberts, 1977). Author Steven Roberts, wrote that because women on
public assistance were refused financial assistance to acquire abortions, many opting for illegal
abortions endangered their lives. Not only were facilities not up to code, but many performing the
procedure were not medically approved to do so. As a result, these lower income women had a
difficult time acquiring abortion services because many health care facilities refused to carry out
the practice. In the end, many women accepted unwanted pregnancies, become more impoverished,
and tried to make the best of unplanned situations.

The Theory Of Game Theory
Game theory is one to more complexed topics but reveals a clear understanding from different
scholars. Don Ross explained that game theory is the study that interacts with the different choices
of economics agents which bring forth many different outcomes with the point to the preferences of
those agents, where the outcomes in question might have been intended by none of the agents
(Ross, 2016). The properties that game theoryconsiders in economic situations include two or
more economic actors that is, two or more firms, individuals, political parties, etc. Each individual
economic actor has a set of decisions they can make what price to charge, how much to save,
whether to move right or left, etc. Each individual economic actor has a goal or payoff, such as
profit maximization, maximize happiness, minimize loss, etc.
The decisions made by one economic actor not only affects her payoff, but the payoff of one or
more other economic actors. Schmidt (2003) states that Game theory was invented in order to
satisfy a mathematical curiosity. The difficulty at the outset was to find a theoretical solution to the
problem posed by uncertainty in games of chance (Schmidt, 2003). He further stated that the first
completed formula of mathematical strategies was sketched by Boral. The application of game
theory to economics posed a more fundamental problem due to the distance of separating several
major concepts articulated in Theory of Games and Economic Behavior. Economics

There are no consolidated accounts for the group, the holding companies and other subsidiaries.
Evidently, the financial system that the Virgin group has adopted is rather amorphous.
Attempts to track the financial results of the various Virgin companies are apparently the most

Ibn Taymiyyah was born in Haran (modern day Jordan, Syria, and Palestine), in the year 1263. He
moved with his family when he was seven years old due to the Mongol invasion. After his father s
death in 1284, he started giving lessons on Hadith (a set of traditions that is based on the saying of
the prophet Muhammadpeace be upon him). He selected some parts of the Quran and Sunnah, and
turned it to an ideology that is based on violence. His way of thinking was controversial and many
scholars undermined his interpretation of the Quran, which made him a minority figure for his time

And Symbolism In Sweetheart Of The Song Tra Bong, By OBrien
Imagery, detail, and symbolism play a crucial role in this work. Imagery has the function of
painting a picture of the situation in the reader s mind so that he or she is able to develop a
version of the story individually. It makes the reading a more personalized experience that helps
the reader to understand what s going on. When O Brien was just about to escape to Canada to
avoid being drafted, he described the scene that was presented in front of him. The shoreline was
dense with brush and timber. I could see tiny red berries on the bushes. In this quote, the reader

The sewage field that Kiowa died in was very graphic at times because O Brien used lots of
imagery to describe it. As a whole, the field represented the worst parts of the war. It consumed
whoever entered it and eventually took O Brien s best friend. It came full circle when later in
life, he returned to the exact same field and buried Kiowa s moccasins in the marshland.
Metaphors and comparisons are extremely important to the flow of the work and how each
story is connected with each other. During this work, O Brien keeps a casual tone. It sometimes
gets more formal and serious, but for the most part, it s friendly and almost playful. When he is
describing the conversations he had with his friends, he looks back on them with happiness.
Consequently, when he is describing the death of one of his friends, his tone gets more somber
and less playful. For example, the entire chapter of Stockings is devoted to describing the soldier
Henry Dobbins and an interesting knack of his. Even now, twenty years later, I can see him
wrapping his girlfriend s pantyhose around his neck before heading out on an ambush. This cute,
two page chapter provides a bit of relief after the chapter about Mary Anne Belle. It has light
connotations and is a generally funny short story. Later in the book, however, he gets more serious
when talking about the death of his dear friend Kiowa. He

The Powers Of The Mediterranean
Powers of the Mediterranean
In the 3rd century B.C.E. there were two great powers in the area surrounding the Western part of
the Mediterranean Sea, The African/Spanish Empire of Carthage and the Italian Empire of Rome.
Both empires were rapidly expanding their territory while ultimately avoiding each other. Carthage
had conquests in South West Europe in modern day Spain, while the Romans were working their
way East into Macedonia. Rome and Carthage were both major powers controlling what to them
was the entire world. These two powers are very similar and very different, but after a conflict
between them started only one would make it out alive.
Before the wars began, in the 9th century B.C.E. a Phoenician Queen known most commonly by
Dido, founded a city in Northern Africa, in modern day Tunisia, Known as Kart hadasht or
translating to new city . The Greeks called this city Karchedon which the Romans adapted to
Carthago, or Carthage. (Mark 2011)
Before Rome, Carthage the center of trade through out the Mediterranean. Upon the fall of the
Phoenician city of Tyre after the conquests of Alexander the Great, Tyrains fled to the city of
Carthage. Most of these refugees were extremely wealthy, and upon their settlement at Carthage,
they expanded Carthage s trade substantially. Carthage was experienced with naval warfare and
fought their battles with mercenaries, soldiers paid to fight. (Rodriguez n.d.)

Community Service By Robert Coles
Politically, socially, environmentally or one person at a time, how will you give back to society?
Day in and day out many citizens change the world, or they do just the opposite and make the
world a worse place than when they woke up. The article I chose to review is, Community Service
written by Robert Coles. The article tells a story of college students who make a difference in the
worldthrough peer tutoring, an act of community service, and have such an impact that they act
as role models for Coles and he begins to do the same. Briefly in the beginning of the article,
Coles states that, students are likely to express their lofty political and social impulses and
practical desires to change the world through community service, even if in limited or modest
ways. (Robert Coles, pg.93) We must make an ultimate decision about the world we live in, will
we choose to make a difference in the lives of fellow citizens or discriminate and punish not only
them but ourselves by not sharing the knowledge we have been taught. Within the article, Robert
Coles shares experiences and quotes from a college junior who once told him, I want to help kids
I know. (Robert Coles, pg.94) Cole believed he seemed both voluble and impassioned. As the
college junior tutors in the ghetto, he teaches the children that there is a better life outside of the
world they are currently living in, provided they study hard and receive a good education. The
junior has a remarkable sense on what

Natalie Angier The Cute Factor
In The cute factor , Natalie Angier discusses the power of cuteness and it impact in our society.
Angier argues that this cuteness factor is changing the way we perceive beauty, as we have a
tendency to like things that are cute. She provides different scientific studies to demonstrate why
we find things like babies or tiny animals cute. Through such evidence, she further recognizes that
we act this way because we like the vulnerability, harmlessness, and innocence these cute things
give off. And ultimately makes us feel like they need our protection and adoration. In my opinion,

to the things they know they have high self confidence in it. They trust their rationalism more than
anyone else and whenever they talk about something they know they are always right even if they

Suicide, The Silent Killer
suicide, The Silent Killer
Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death across all ages in the United States. It is also the
second leading cause of death for 15 35 year olds nationwide. The World Health Organization (or
WHO) estimates that approximately 1 million people die every year from suicide. However, almost
twice that number that attempt it and survived. In Georgia suicide is the third leading cause of death
with roughly 1,000 death per year. Suicide has lasting effects on families and communities;
Understanding the risk factors, recognizing the warning signs and taking them seriously suicide
becomes very preventable.
What drives people to suicide? To the individuals not at the grips of suicidal depression and
despair, it can be very difficult to understand what drives many to take their own lives. To a
suicidal person, suicide is a very desperate attempt to escape from all of the suffering that has
become incredibly unbearable. Blinded by feelings of self loathing, hopelessness, and isolation, a
suicidal person cannot see any other possible way of finding relief except through death. But, even
though desperate in their desire to stop the pain, some suicidal people have become very deeply
conflicted about ending their lives. They wish there was an alternative, but just simply cannot see
one.
Who is most affected by this? Every suicide is a tragedy that has major effects on various families,
communities and even entire countries; it has long lasting effects on the

Kwame Anthony Appiah On Identity
Race can be defined as a generally constructed way of
categorizing people, according to phonotypical characteristics that are
determined genetically but not always consistent. Kwame Anthony
Appiah defined race to be the same as all other major forms of
identification which are central to identity politics (45). Identity
provides us with a sense of belonging. Our families, our cultural
backgrounds, where we live and the type of work we do all contribute to
our sense of identity.
Malcolm X s shift in identity we can say came when he adopted X
as his last name saying, since he was the descendant of slaves stolen
from Africa, Little was actually a slave name as slaves were often given
the last name of their owners. He came to realize that he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Fractured identities
simply show the difference between an individual and the society the
live in. It s relevant for every individual to have a recognizable identity
(45).
A fractured identity definitely reflects to the existence of
solidarity among races. Appiah said, because many people want the
sense of solidarity that comes from being unlike others (52). Appiah is
trying to suggest that solidarity is the identity that allows differences
between races and ethnicities. In his essay he suggest we should regard
and accept the concept of solidarity. We can from here relate fractional
identities and the concept of solidarity. Fractional identities are the
identities that differentiate individuals from the ethnicity they belong to
or come from, while solidarity shows the diversity among different
cultures, allowing us to see the difference amid a person representing
his ethnicity and another community or ethnicity. Relating fractional
identity and solidarity help Appiah talk about identity play.
We can relate Appiah s urgency to his opinions on racism; he
wished the change the notion people had about racism. He didn t

Grendel s Three Battles In Beowulf
Throughout the book Beowulf, the titular character takes on many tough, mythological foes for
fame and glory. Beowulf begins by slaying a creature known as Grendel without any trouble, but
with his later opponents he struggles to win and is even harmed. As the story progresses, Beowulf s
battles with monsters escalate in difficulty, cost, and reward. The primary difference between
Beowulfs three battles was the level of difficulty each trial consisted of. With the last battle being
his last and most difficult battle, Beowulf found himself unable to fight it alone. There were,
however, very obvious reasons as to why the dragon was more difficult than the rest of the hero s
battles. At this stage of his life, Beowulf s physical strength was... Show more content on

Beowulf only killed Grendel for the fame and glory, receiving this and Grendel s claw. Beowulf
killed Grendel s mom with the intention of gaining more glory, but also was showered in riches
and gifts. Beowulf drank to these presents not ashamed to be praised (Line 1025) Lastly, the
dragon that was terrorizing his land guarded a tower that was said to be packed with treasure.
However, Beowulf was no longer doing it just for his name and his people. Beowulf was
motivated by the treasure and riches. Because of his motivation, Beowulf s reward was rotten
and spoiled. This is also the real reason he found himself unable to beat the dragon alone. Wiglaf
was able to help because he a genuine intention and wanted to help his king. Beowulf took a
physical trophy away from each fight: the claw, Grendel s head, and the treasure that filled his
grave. Had Beowulf been the almighty hero that he was thought to be, he would have said kind
things to Wiglaf as his last words, talked about any regrets, or named off his favorite people.
Instead he ordered Wiglaf to show him the treasure. Wiglaf had just saved his life and he couldn t
even ask nicely. Beowulf died the way he did because he was a shallow, selfish, self centered,
avaricious, plutomaniac. He could not beat the dragon by himself because he was only fighting for
his personal monetary gain instead of trying to avenge his killed

Bullying At The State Of Nevada
We all might still recall back to our school days and the bully on the playground making recess
intolerable for some; or perhaps in the lunch room bully who helped themselves to our desserts.
That bully might have ended up in the principal s office, but likely not much more became of
them. Bullies have always been around, but now they have changed their preferred tactics. With the
growth of technology making our ordinary lives simpler, criminals and bullies have also used
technology to aid them in their transgressions. Many bullies have advanced to become cyber bullies
and their chosen scare tactic makes use of computers, cellular phones, or some other type of
communications device. What then is the actual definition of the act of bullying? Bullying in the
State of Nevada is defined as carrying out actions that may be highly offensive to a reasonable
person and intended to cause the student to suffer harm or serious emotional distress (Cyberbully
tactics are focus of state law, 2010). Cyber bullying elsewhere is bullying by means of electronic
communication (Cyberbully tactics are focus of state law, 2010). In Texas, bullying means
engaging in written or verbal expression or physical conduct that will physically harm another
student or student s property, or is persistent enough to create an intimidating or threatening
educational environment for a student (Grobe, 2012). These definitions are typical of those used in
other states. Advances in

Reflection Paper On Public Relations
Throughout the semester, the speakers have reaffirmed the fact that I would like to go into Public
Relations. They have told me everything I already know about the business including writing is
key and that networking is important. However, they have also mentioned things that I had not
yet thought of before such as business papers are a lifesaver, charity is a must, getting to know
your client is important and plenty more. Being able to hear first hand about the business and
what it takes to be successful in the future has helped me prepare for any future jobs or
internships. In our first class with a speaker, Kelly Rossman discussed about while the social media
and writingis a key aspect of Public Relationsyou must also look at the business part of Public
Relations. The business aspect you should have includes partner agreements, no competition
contracts, confidentiality agreements and more. All of these things help your business run
smoothly and ensure that your customers are protected. When dealing with people you never
know what is going to happen because they are so unpredictable. Having the safety guard to
protect you is not only important for your business but for yourself also. It gives you peace at
mind knowing that if you were to wake up the next morning to bad news at least you have
something to fall back on. This will help you focus on being the best Public Relations specialist
you can be and take away unnecessary worry. Going forward I will make sure that

Doubt By John Patrick Shanley
In Doubt, a play by John Patrick Shanley, a nun, named Sister Aloysius, tries to prove that a
priest, named Father Flynn, has sexually assaulted a child. Father Flynn has taken Donald Muller,
the first African American student, under his wing and Sister Aloysius sees this as a lion going
for easy prey . Sister Aloysius tells another nun, named Sister James, to watch out for anything out
of the ordinary, because she suspects Father Flynn to be a sinful man. She puts evil ideas into
Sister James s mind, and she leads her to accuse Father Flynn of being informal with Donald
Muller. Sister Aloysius is biased and judgmental, she is trying to prove that Father Flynn has

Unlike our predecessors, the society is now affected by a manifold of dynamics which affect the
ways of life and the living standards of people. The change of society has created the need for
citizens to be more reliant on the politics of their country, the social conditions of the country, as
well as the economic prosperity that may affect where they live. In this report, the living
standards of citizens in different countries will be analyzed and shown. From observing the
several countries in the world, an analysis will be made to discover what makes the living
standards of one country higher than another. Several organizations are already performing this
type of research, such as UNICEF; an organization which would rather promote happiness and
wellness of citizens in a country rather than only considering the economical factors provided.
Instead of solely judging a country by its GDP, or essentially its numerical productivity, there is
numerical data for happiness, otherwise known as the Gross National Happiness1. This was
created by the King of Bhutan, the leader of a communist country, and the GHP was measured by
the social, economic, and political conditions within the country1. Used by major organizations
now across the world including UNICEF, I also agree that a country should not only be measured
by the economical standards as it is not the only

Why College Athletes Shouldn t Be Paid
Why Not to Pay College Athletes After numerous scandals over the past several years of college
athletes receiving improper benefits, the question has come up whether or not college athletes
should be paid or not. College sports are a growing industry, and we have seen money destroy
organizations, teams, and players in this industry. The determination and motivation of college
athletes supersedes professional athletes by their will to win; therefore, college athletes should
not be paid. The law that prevents college athletes from receiving money is called Title IX. Title
IX was passed in 1972, and states that all money should go equally for all sports and no team
should be excluded. Originally this law was created to preserve equal... Show more content on

Likewise, almost all NCAA championships lose money. However, overall NCAA revenue,
primarily derived from the Association s media agreements and the popularity of the Division I
Men s Basketball Championship, helps 400,000 student athletes at more than 1,000 member
institutions learn and compete in 23 sports and 88 national championships (NCAA 2). Most
colleges typically lose money on most of their sporting teams, and with the income from the few
sport teams they are able to provide for other students. Since a lot of colleges are losing money in
the industry, they wouldn t be able to pay the athletes if they don t generate revenue. This would
cause students to go to colleges that make money knowing they would be getting paid, compared
to a college that doesn t have financial stability to pay athletes. College would not be college
anymore. The universities would become franchises and inevitably turn into a smaller version of
the NFL. The law Title IX makes it mandatory for each team to provide the same amount of benefits
to each student. From the incomes to these few sports, the less popular sports at schools would be
cut because they do not have enough revenue coming in to pay the players. ( Student athletes
generate billions of dollars for universities and private companies while earning nothing for
themselves. ) This is indisputably untrue. Student athletes earn free tuition, which

How Did Rosa Parks Impact Society

Rosa Parks Impact
Rosa Parks had a tremendous impact on the United States. She stood up for what she believed in
and did everything in her power to make a difference, which was to fight not only fight for her
rights, but also the rights of the black community. Before her arrest, she was an active member of
many organizations, and worked as a seamstress in Alabama. One day, in 1955, after a long and
tiring day at work, she took the bus home and refused to move her seat for a white man, causing her
to get arrested. This moment started the Civil Rights movements through boycotts and other
nonviolent protests. Rosa Parks played a major influential role in fighting segregation. ... Show

She received several honorary degrees, and in 1965, Congressman John Conyers of Detroit
appointed her to his staff ( Rosa Parks UXL Biographies). Then a few years later in 1987, she was
honored at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. where she
received the Congressional Gold Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the two top
governmental honors for civilians in the United States ( Rosa Parks Contemporary Black
Biography). The Congressional Gold Medal Of Honor, Parks said is encouragement for all of
us to continue until all people have equal rights ( Rosa Parks St. James Encyclopedia of
Popular). She believed that people shouldn t stop fighting because they aren t getting what they
want, but that they should keep going until the other person has no choice but to give in. She
was always eager to help the young, and in 1987 she also established the Rosa and Raymond
Parks Institute for Self Development, a training school for troubled Detroit teenagers ( Rosa
Parks UXL Biographies). She would say that she hoped to inspire others, especially young
people, to be dedicated enough to make useful lives for themselves and to help others (Shipp). In

Mercy Is A Residential Treatment Facility Essay
To start off this journey, you need a little background. Life didn t make much sense when I was a
kid. There was lots of abuse and not so much fun. This all led to a place called Mercy Ministries
and that is where this journey begins. Mercy is a residential treatment facility. I was introduced
to the idea of Mercy in December of 2012, and I was accepted into the program in May of 2013.
My entrance date was June 3, 2013. The first thought I had was when am I going to leave this
hellish place. Six months had past and I received the month of which was going to be my
graduation. I could taste the finish line, I had three months left, I was going to graduate in
March. I had no idea what day it was going to be but I knew that I was going to leave with the
victory that God had given me. The next 3 months would be spent looking for a place of residence
I could call home. So I called my best friend. So when I get out of this place, can I stay with you?
Sure, how long do you think you will stay? I will be home for good, so how long do you want
me for? If forever works for you, I would be totally fine having you for that long. As I hung up
the phone with my best friend, I knew everything would be okay. Life was going to work itself
out and I was going to be safe when I went home. The time went on and March got closer, my
time had finally come, A DATE!! March 24, 2014, that is the day I would graduate. More phone
calls with my best friend ensured me that I

  • 2. Political And Media Systems And Ownership Practices In an increasingly globalized and mediated environment, there is an evident rise in awareness towards the emerging transnational news sphere, as well as the journalistic practices that are outside of Western media domains with issues of global importance becoming more salient than ever. These ideas have been explored through the readings as both papers describe certain characteristics of both political and media systems and ownership practices of news organizations to gain insight into the implications of global journalism. Whilst Hellman and Reigert focus on conceptualizing the transnational news sphere, Chakravartty and Roy present a comparative approach to exploring diversity in journalism through examining the intranational divergences within the Indian political and media system (Chakravartty and Roy 2013, p.357). Hellman and Reigert express global journalism as a reporting style that sought to unite people through identifications that permeate national boundaries, through common human rights or interests , hence their focus on global crisis journalism (Hellman and Reigert 2012, p.163). Through exploring the nature of global crisis journalism, Hellman and Reigert question whether there is a responsibility for journalists to promote what it means to be a citizen of the world through providing equal coverage of crisis that are within areas that are considered remote by Western standards. This challenges current practices within national/local journalism, in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Should Human Cloning Ever Be Pursued In The Future I do not think that human cloning should ever be a field that is pursued in the future by scientists. There are a multitude of problems that arise with the idea of cloning. Even if doctors were able to eliminate those risks, the process of cloning a human being would remain an odd one. The human population would cease diversity and uniqueness in all areas. Since the cloningprocess involves taking genes and creating identical ones, all beings would begin to look and be the same. With a lack of differentiation throughout the humanrace, might lead to higher competition in areas like school, careers, athletics, etc., and could infringe on a person s freedoms and rights of being individualistic. I agree with many other people that the genetic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The New York House Of Refuge The New York House of Refuge was the first juvenile reformatory in the nation. It began as a product of a humanitarian association. Organized in 1815, it was originally called the Society for the Prevention of Pauperism. The Reverend John Stanford founded this Society. During the year 1820 and continuing through the middle of 1821, the Society completed a survey of the United States prisons. Upon completion, the Society then appointed a committee to study the findings. The report the committee put out criticized the treatment and the handling of prisoners. It also showed great remorse for the imprisonment of individuals regardless of age or the severity of crime. After the report was adopted in 1824, reorganization was called for by the Society, for the purpose of establishing a reformatory. After the Society for the Prevention of Pauperism ceased to exist as an organization in 1823, the Society for the Reformation for Juvenile Delinquents took its place.(Pickett, 1969) Even though the New York House of Refuge was managed privately, the State of New York was involved form the beginning. It participated in establishing inmate commitment procedures, developing treatment programs, funding and in the organization process for the program. Members of the Society appointed a thirty member Board of Managers. Meeting weekly as the policy making section, an Acting Committee, consisting initially of five and later seven Board members was also implemented. Appointed by the Acting ... • 5. The Lost but Found Sheep Christianity. This word brings a lot of mixed thoughts in one s head especially for those people who do not understand the concept of this religion, such as the people of Rome in early times. ... And by a distinction between the seasons which is due to God s arrangement, set aside some for festivals, others for times of sorrow merely to suit their own inclinations! Who can consider this a proof of religion, and not, rather, of lack of understanding? (The Epistle to Diognetus) Christianity was seen as an insignificant cult for the ignorant and uneducated types and also viewed to be as treason to Rome. They are thought to be lustful (loveone another), sinful, immoral and vile creatures of society who follow a cult that practices inhumane... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These memories and influence that Marcia did and left created lingering thoughts, several questions and confusion to Junia about Christianity. It s about love, the greatest love in the world, which has been my joy for many years, and my father s as well. ), the only hope of our lives who is Jesus (... but we could never do that because it would be a betrayal of Jesus, who is the only hope of our lives. ), to love and serve Jesus ( ... but to love and serve Jesus Christ is the most marvelous thing in the world. ), and the strength He gives to our soul (He gives the soul a strength and a sweetness beyond compare. ) This letter had an effect with Junia, it made her feel something intense and overpowering is happening to her. This is the foundation where she discovered and pursued Christianity from her curiosity and interest. It was a beginning of a new quest. Within her soul she sensed that something profound was happening to her, though she could not explain it. It seemed that suddenly a great weight had been lifted from her. • 6. Why Is Field Artillery Important Field Artillery traces its history back to 1775. However, artillery as we know it today is a proud profession that traces its origins and honorable traditions to centuries before the birth of Christ (Unknown). In the 18th century Frederick the Great of Prussia began mounting cannoneers on the backs of horses. This in turn gave the Field Artillery great mobility and the ability to accompany cavalry. With the development of trucks, horse artillery and horse drawn artillery evolved into the towed artillery, as we know today (Unknown). The American field artillery has answered the call to arms in every major war and conflict, evolving our technology, equipment, and cannoneers to employ these changes in battle. The American Field Artillery was born November 17, 1775, when Henry Knox, a 26 year old self taught artilleryman, appointed to Chief of the Continental Artillery (Unknown). In August of 1775, a New York militia company on Manhattan Island confiscated 21 original nine pounders. Fifty nine cannons were on Dorchester Heights and Nook s Hill overlooking Boston by March 2 1776. General Washington ordered the bombardment of the city, and thus began the traditions of the American Field Artillery (Unknown). There are countless opportunities to create innovative ideas that can change a struggling city into a beautiful and exciting place for residents and tourist. However, when it comes to managing urban growth, planning becomes a more complicated process. Part of the problem is the difficulty in balancing the task of growth management and politics. Many of the proponents for growth management are supportive of the legislation because they believe in the safe management of their land and resources. However, there are many not supportive of the legislation of growth management for various reasons including government control. As quoted in the attitudes toward growth management publication, the system has also been criticized for placing the state in the role of a command and control entity, rather than the role of a facilitator and advisor to localities on planning issues (Connerly, 2004). While there remains to be a great number of supporters for growth management, many Florida residents are not in support of government intervention. The Pros And Cons Of Forgiveness According to Mc CuUough, Pargament, Thoresen, 2000, social scientists have adopted many conceptualization of forgiveness, alternatively characterizing the construct as an emotion, a decision, a behaviour, and a motivational change. According to Worthington (2001), Forgiveness is defined as the emotional replacement of (1) hot emotions of anger or fear that follow a perceived hurt or offense, or (2) unforgiveness that follows ruminating about the transgression, by substituting positive emotions such as unselfish love, empathy, compassion, or even romantic love. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Pro and Cons of Forgiveness We can gain some benefits from forgiveness. One of the benefits of forgiveness is that it is good for our heart. This is because when we try to forgive other people, we can train our heart to be more patience when we are dealing in some issues in our daily life. Besides that, forgiveness also can always train us to be more forgiven people rather than someone who hold revenge towards others, which is not good for our heart. It can cause the hatred within our heart. According to Siromi (2012), forgiveness reflects our heart attitude towards God and the person who sinned. In this context, we can forgive, because there are two components to forgiveness which is attitudinal and transactional. Before we approach the person who sinned against us, we must approach God and battle to have a forgiving and merciful heart. To forgive someone, we really need to be sincere so that there would not be revenge that particular individual. We have to make sure that our heart is ready to forgive that person and we really mean it. Thus, we will be very easy and the peaceful finally be with us. Our heart will be in peace because there is no more hatred and we can go through our life happily. So, the forgiveness is really good for our heart. Three of which were the decline of monarchy within the empire, foreign conquests and expansion of the growing empire, and political battles between powerful officials. The decline of monarchy which caused the rise of the republic was caused by the expulsion of the last Etruscan king. An ancient Roman tale tells of how the last Etruscan king, Tarquinius Superbus, was driven from his thrown. Censors were elected by the centuries. The censor s task was to enroll each citizen in their tribe, and place them in a social class century according to their property assessment. Soon the judicial functions of censors were assigned to a praetor, an official first elected in 367 B.C by the centuries. Praetorships eventually increased in number. The consuls inherited much of the king s responsibilities, but did not inherit his religious duties. His religious responsibilities passed to the Rex sanctorum. But in time the Pontifex Maximus became the leading and most important religious official. The pontiffs were the caretakers of the unwritten law. • 13. The Effects Of The Seebeck Effect Introduction 1.1 Seebeck Effect When two ends of a conductor are held at different temperatures electrons at the hot junction at higher thermal velocities diffuse to the cold junction. Seebeck discovered that making one end of a metal bar hotter or colder than the other produced an EMF between the two ends. He experimented with junctions (simple mechanical connections) made between different conducting materials. He found that if he created a temperature difference between two electrically connected junctions (e.g., heating one of the junctions and cooling the other) the wire connecting the two junctions would cause a compass needle to deflect. He thought that he had discovered a way to transform thermal energy into a magnetic ... The reverse of the Seebeck effect is also possible: by passing a current through two junctions, you can create a temperature difference. This process was discovered in 1834 by scientist named Peltier, and thus it is called the Peltier effect. This may sound similar to Joule heating described above, but in fact it is not. In Joule heating the current is only increasing the temperature in the material in which it flows. In Peltier effect devices, a temperature difference is created: one junction becomes cooler and one junction becomes hotter. Although Peltier coolers are not as efficient as some other types of cooling devices, they are accurate, easy to control, and easy to adjust. Indirectly, this vice makes the Christians fail to be the light of the world as God requires of us, consequently making us sinners. Due to division of church members and split ups over the recent past caused by ethnocentrism, there has been an impulsive opening of many churches. The split ups have brought about many mysterious religious denominations that have distorted and biased the gospel truth. The distortion of the gospel is what has instigated mushrooming of many cult churches that teach contrary to the word of God. Ethnocentrism has therefore instigated the existence of false teachings most of which are bound to transform their members into ardent devil flocks. As it is the responsibility of the church to oversee events even those that are outside the clerical premises running successfully, it s of late failing. Henceforth, ethnocentrism of such nature keeps lagging the nation from completing the political metamorphosis it started since independence. The Pauline epistles dwell much on the issue of ethnocentrism in the church, since the vice was present in the early church. In 1st Corinthians chapter 1 4, Paul talks about church divisions and says that they are a mark of spiritual immaturity. The Dream Argument Of Rene Descartes Final (704935286) The Dream Argument of Rene Descartes is a philosophical skeptical argument used by Descartes himself to put into doubt the existence of any knowledge he has gained from his sense. There have been many interpretations of Descartes Dream Argument by different philosophers, and one notable example is that of Barry Stroud s example. Stroud, in his Problem of the External World, describes the Dream Argument as an argument where we must know we are dreaming if we are to know anything about the world around us (Stroud 30). This reading by Stroud describes the Dream Argument as an altered form of an argument from ignorance, which would have a general formulation as such: To know any O (ordinary proposition), I must have prior and independent knowledge of not SH (skeptical hypothesis). I do not have prior knowledge of not SH. Therefore, I do not know O. For the Dream Argument, the skeptical hypothesis argues that our current perceptions of the world using our senses are that of a dream. Stroud argues that Descartes intends on using such a skeptical hypothesis as a pre condition of being able to know anything with our senses. However, it is the aim of this paper, through discussing Stroud s interpretation of Descartes Dream Argument to argue that maintaining such a reading of the Dream Argument ensures that if one agrees with the premise a condition of knowing anything about the world is that he knows he is not dreaming (21), the radical skeptic would have ... The properties that game theoryconsiders in economic situations include two or more economic actors that is, two or more firms, individuals, political parties, etc. Each individual economic actor has a set of decisions they can make what price to charge, how much to save, whether to move right or left, etc. Each individual economic actor has a goal or payoff, such as profit maximization, maximize happiness, minimize loss, etc. The decisions made by one economic actor not only affects her payoff, but the payoff of one or more other economic actors. Schmidt (2003) states that Game theory was invented in order to satisfy a mathematical curiosity. The difficulty at the outset was to find a theoretical solution to the problem posed by uncertainty in games of chance (Schmidt, 2003). He further stated that the first completed formula of mathematical strategies was sketched by Boral. • 36. Community Service By Robert Coles Politically, socially, environmentally or one person at a time, how will you give back to society? Day in and day out many citizens change the world, or they do just the opposite and make the world a worse place than when they woke up. The article I chose to review is, Community Service written by Robert Coles. The article tells a story of college students who make a difference in the worldthrough peer tutoring, an act of community service, and have such an impact that they act as role models for Coles and he begins to do the same. Briefly in the beginning of the article, Coles states that, students are likely to express their lofty political and social impulses and practical desires to change the world through community service, even if in limited or modest ways. (Robert Coles, pg.93) We must make an ultimate decision about the world we live in, will we choose to make a difference in the lives of fellow citizens or discriminate and punish not only them but ourselves by not sharing the knowledge we have been taught. Within the article, Robert Coles shares experiences and quotes from a college junior who once told him, I want to help kids I know. (Robert Coles, pg.94) Cole believed he seemed both voluble and impassioned. As the college junior tutors in the ghetto, he teaches the children that there is a better life outside of the world they are currently living in, provided they study hard and receive a good education. The junior has a remarkable sense on what ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 38. Natalie Angier The Cute Factor In The cute factor , Natalie Angier discusses the power of cuteness and it impact in our society. Angier argues that this cuteness factor is changing the way we perceive beauty, as we have a tendency to like things that are cute. She provides different scientific studies to demonstrate why we find things like babies or tiny animals cute. Through such evidence, she further recognizes that we act this way because we like the vulnerability, harmlessness, and innocence these cute things give off. And ultimately makes us feel like they need our protection and adoration.
