Multi-cloud computing has established itself as a paradigm of choice for creating very large scale world wide distributed applications. Multi-cloud computing is the usage of multiple, independent cloud environments, which assumed no priori agreement between cloud providers or third party. However, these applications, designed for multi-cloud environments, have to face real challenges in term of design, architecture, and technology. The possibility of using multi-cloud faces the heterogeneity and complexity of cloud solutions. Thus, multi-cloud computing has to face several challenges such as portability, provisioning, elasticity, and high availability we have identified in this thesis.
In this thesis, we propose soCloud both a model and a platform that tackle these four challenges. This model is based on the OASIS Service Component Architecture (SCA) standard to design distributed large scale applications for multi-cloud environments. A new language is proposed to effectively express the elasticity of multi-cloud applications through abstraction. The multi-cloud platform is designed to deploy and manage distributed applications across multi-clouds.
The soCloud model is illustrated on three distributed applications deployed in multi- cloud environments. The soCloud platform has been implemented, deployed and experimented on top of ten existing cloud providers : Windows Azure, DELL KACE, Amazon EC2, CloudBees, OpenShift, dotCloud, Jelastic, Heroku, Appfog, and an Eucalyptus private cloud. These experiments are used to validate the novelty of the contributed solutions.
With our contributions, we aim to provide a simple and effective way to design, deploy, run, and manage distributed applications for a multi-cloud environment by proposing a model and platform.

Cloud platforms are increasingly being used for hosting a broad diversity of services from traditional e-commerce applications to interactive web-based IDEs. However, we observe that the proliferation of offers by cloud providers raises several challenges. Developers will not only have to deploy applications for a speci?c cloud, but will also have to consider migrating services from one cloud to another, and to manage distributed applications spanning multiple clouds. In this paper, we present our federated multi-cloud PaaS infrastructure for addressing these challenges. This infrastructure is based on three foundations: i) an open ser- vice model used to design and implement both our multi- cloud PaaS and the SaaS applications running on top of it, ii) a con?gurable architecture of the federated PaaS, and iii) some infrastructure services for managing both our multi- cloud PaaS and the SaaS applications. We then show how this multi-cloud PaaS can be deployed on top of thirteen ex- isting IaaS/PaaS. We ?nally report on three distributed SaaS applications developed with and deployed on our federated multi-cloud PaaS infrastructure.

The paper presented on Cloud slam 2014 cloud computing conference. It is based on the work I have done while working as a Technology Principal and Cloud Innovation Lead at Global Technology Consulting Firm. It describes unique challenges encountered during the development of a Cloud Broker. Designed to provide seamless and uniform user experience as well as additional enterprise-level capabilities over a broad range of public and private cloud platforms, the broker had to work with a wide variety of diverse cloud APIs. And, in order to allow rapid onboarding of new target clouds, we had to design the system to operate in a generic cloud-agnostic way. We have reviewed and tried quite a few of available cloud integration technologies, both commercial and open-source as a foundation for our cloud abstraction and mediation layer. Couple seemed to be a good choice and, in theory, should have served all our needs, but in the course of development we found that the problem was far more complex than we (and the rest of the market) had anticipated. As we were building our system, we discovered that there was not just one, but 3 different levels of mediation required to build a truly cloud-agnostic solution: syntactic, semantic and idiosyncratic and even the best off-the-shelf solution will not be able to give us that last two out of the box. The final part of the presentation describes the architecture that allows to realize our goals and build the universal broker.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

So…this sounds like a pretty onerous goal…quite a challenging…so how do we approach such a thing? What is different from working in single-cloud mode?
The punchline here is that one needs to step back, and look at the challenges a bit like an integration problem. That is, one needs to work with “portable abstractions” and be able to integrate them across.I think it is very similar to what one would do in building an application or service, consisting of several sub-applications written in different languages.So let me share some considerations to be had in mind when going multi-cloud [POINTS]So it is a fairly different way to think about stuff…it’s all about higher-level abstractions.But not all is lost, RightScale helps with these a lot….let me tell you how…
RightScale already provides several abstractions that are cloud-agnostic. In fact you’re already using probably all of them (despite you might only be deployed in 1 cloud)..We have the concept of a server (something that can be launched/running on any cloud)The concept of a ServerTemplate, which specifies the configuration we want on a serverAnd the concept of an MCI which specifies which image configuration we want (lower-level stuff)And all these things are RS concepts…the cloud is not really involved in all this…
Right not we focus on the ability to migrate applications…the next steps will be to run concurrentlyWE use some of these techniques…but are not packaged …let me finish with a multi-cloud deployment use case that can be realized today. We and others are using. Note it’s not about the more future looking scenario of having you production app runnig simultaneously in multiple clouds….it’s about being able to migration applications/deployments from cloud to cloud, much like in a cookie cutter type of way…
