First and second lectures for second year ISLN students in American history. The lectures focus on the economic political and social divide of the American nation in 1860-1865
This presentation was made to outline the effects of the Civil war. In an attempt to achieve this I felt the need to have a broad scope of topics. I know this conflicts with my outline critiques, but I felt like this would allow for a more effective powerpoint; instead of fewer topics and more fluffed out ideas.

Operation âBlue Starâ is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Â
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Â
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
⢠The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
⢠The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate âany matterâ at âany timeâ under House Rule X.
⢠The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

3. The ordinance stated that Indians were to be treated with the "utmost good faith" and specified that "their lands and property shall never be taken away from them without their consent."
4. What was William Henry Harrisonâs relationship to the Indians and what were the effects (specifically 1811-1812)?
5. Governor of Indiana William Henry Harrison threatened, bribed and purposely intoxicated Indians. Tecumseh began to organize an Indian Confederation. In 1811 and 1812 Harrison fought and defeated Tecumseh at the battle of Tippecanoe.
6. What happened with Florida in 1819, and what did this mean for Native Americans? How does Andrew Jackson tie into all of this?
7. 1819: the purchase of Florida For years Indians had fled south to Florida to escape American authorities. There, the Spanish were powerless to control the Indians where a new tribe was formed called the Seminoles. In 1818 Andrew Jackson led a raid on Florida and crushed the Seminoles. Fearing the loss of their territory without compensation the Spanish sold Florida to the United States and Seminoles were moved to a reservation
8. What was the result of Supreme Court case Cherokee Nation vs. Georgia (1830)? Why was this case brought to trial? What was Andrew Jacksonâs famous quote in response to this trial? Who was Chief Justice at this point in time?
9. Problem: the state of Georgia deprived the Cherokees rights within its boundaries (white settlers that had moved in and the State of Georgia claimed jurisdiction over the Cherokee) The Cherokee sued, claiming they were independent from Georgia. S.C. Chief Justice: John Marshall Outcome: the Supreme Court did not hear the case on its merit. It ruled that it had no original jurisdiction in the matter, as the Cherokee were a dependent nation, with a relationship to the United States like that of a ward to its guardian. Andrew Jackson:"John Marshall has made his decision. Now let him enforce it." Instead the federal government removed the Indians to Oklahoma.
10. What did the Indian Removal Act (1830) do? Explain the âTrail of Tearsâ?
11. This act authorized the President to negotiate treaties and remove the remaining Eastern Indians to lands west of the Mississippi Trail of Tears: relocation of Native Americans from their homelands to âIndian Territoryâ (basically modern-day Oklahoma). By the late 1840's almost all native Americans had been moved to lands west of the Mississippi.
12. What was President Rutherford B. Hayesâs famous quote in 1877 (in a message to Congress)?
13. "Many, if not most of our Indian wars, have had their origin in broken promises and acts of injustice on our part."
14. Who was Helen Hunt Jackson? How does she tie into Native Americansâ rights?
15. 1881: A Century of Dishonor Her book helped awaken white Americans to their shameful treatment of the Indians
16. What were the Plains Indians Wars (1860 - 1890âs)? Name two major battles.
17. During this period, Americans and plains Indians clashed as Americans attempted to force Indians onto reservations. Battle of Little Bighorn: Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer and his regiment of 250 were all killed by approximately 4500 Sioux and Cheyenne warriors Battle at Wounded Knee: thousands of Cheyenne men, women, and children were slaughtered by the American Calvary. Wounded Knee represented the end of any real armed resistance on the part of the Native American.
18. What were the three things the The Dawes Act (1887) provided?
19. Each Indian family head be allotted a 160 acre farm out of reservation land Each new land owner who abandoned tribal practices and adopted the "habits of civilized life" would be granted American citizenship "Surplus" reservation lands would be made available to sell to white settlers
20. What did the Snyder Indian Citizenship Act (1924) do?
22. Name three things the Wheeler-Howard Indian Reorganization Act (1934) did?
23. Ended land allotments and returned unsold lands to the Indians. Authorized tribes to form corporations and launch businesses. Provided for elected tribal councils with significant powers.
