Applying the principles to your field
COLLEGE STUDENTS' ACADEMIC STRESS AND ITS RELATION TO THEIR ANXIETY, TIME MANAGEMENT, AND LEISURE SATISFACTION.
BY
Misra, Ranjita McKean, Michelle
A) What is the author’s main argument? What conclusions are drawn?
The authors’ main argument is about suggesting what teachers, faculty members and counsellors will do to improve academic success of students. They advised that should be emphasized participation in time management seminars. It is recommended that college students be made aware of time management's potential impact on academic stress, and of what activities should be undertaken instead of leaving it to trial and error. Courses offered for credit and sessions on time management at the student recreation centers and residence halls could enhance efficiency.
B) What evidence does the author put forward to support the argument and conclusion?
The authors support their final argument and conclusion by giving examples and by giving suggestions. They mention as an example that a course offered in their campus is entitled "Academic Planning and Development" and emphasizes the importance of attendance, time management skills, study habits, teacher/student relationships, and scheduling important events. Although the class has open enrolment for all students, it is only required for those students on academic probation or suspension. Authors suggest that other efforts to help students utilize

their time and decrease their stress are offered through the university recreation center and individual sororities and fraternities. Freshman week orientation programs and workshops on coping with stress, although helpful, may still not be adequate. Publicity for these events may help students better utilize these services and improve academic performance.
C) What is your view of this evidence? Can you spot any weaknesses in the methodology, the findings and the way that the conclusions are drawn?
The evidence given by the author was good because the examples and the suggestions were really useful since they can be applied and used in another context, but talking about the methodology, the correlational nature of this study precludes making any casual statements. Therefore, several explanations for the findings can be proposed. Another limitation of this research is its reliance on self- reported measures, and is based on a small sample from a predominantly teaching university. The results should be considered in context, and not be generalized to other segments of the population without further investigation. Using of experimental and longitudinal designs will improve the strength of the findings.
D) Has the author made any implicit assumptions about shared beliefs which you, the reader, you might question?
Before reading this article, I did not find any kind of assumptions made by the researcher. She does not do shared any beliefs which the reader might question.
