The existential approach to counseling is unlike most other therapies in that it is not technique oriented and prioritizes understanding the client's worldview. In the initial phases, therapists help clients identify and clarify their assumptions about the world. In the middle phase, clients more fully examine the source and authority of their value systems. The final phase focuses on helping clients apply what they've learned about themselves. A strength is its focus on available choices and personal growth. This approach is appropriate for those committed to dealing with life problems or searching for meaning. It can focus clients on responsibility, commitment, and awareness of their situation.
