Socket preservation is a procedure to preserve the alveolar ridge after tooth extraction by placing graft material in the extraction socket. The Bio-Col technique and socket seal surgery are two approaches that involve placing graft material and membranes in the socket to promote bone and soft tissue healing. These techniques aim to minimize ridge resorption and collapse of soft tissues after extraction. Case studies demonstrate that both techniques can successfully preserve the alveolar ridge contours and thickness for later implant placement or prosthetic restoration.

This document discusses periodontal vaccines and their potential role in preventing periodontal disease. It provides background on periodontal disease, outlines key periodontal pathogens like Porphyromonas gingivalis and Actinomyces actinomycetemcomitans, and summarizes different vaccine approaches - including active immunization using whole cells/subunits/peptides, passive immunization using monoclonal antibodies or plantibodies, and genetic immunization using plasmid or viral vectors. While animal studies show promise, translating vaccine efficacy to humans and clinical use remains challenging due to the complex multifactorial nature of periodontal disease. Future research opportunities include multispecies vaccines targeting multiple pathogens and genomic approaches.
This document discusses furcation involvement, which refers to periodontal disease affecting the bifurcation or trifurcation areas of multi-rooted teeth. It begins by defining key terminology related to furcation anatomy. It then describes several classifications of furcation involvement based on the degree and extent of horizontal bone and attachment loss. The main causes of furcation involvement are said to be microbial dental plaque and local anatomic factors that impede access for proper cleaning. Diagnosis involves careful examination using probes and radiographs to determine the classification. Treatment options range from non-surgical to surgical approaches depending on the classification and severity, with more advanced cases sometimes requiring extraction.
This document provides information about osteomyelitis and osteoradionecrosis of the jaws. It defines osteomyelitis as an inflammatory condition of bone that begins as an infection of the medullary cavity and spreads to involve the surrounding bone and periosteum. Predisposing factors include trauma, radiation damage, and systemic diseases. Imaging techniques useful for diagnosis include conventional radiographs, radionuclide scans, CT, and MRI. Treatment involves antibiotics, surgery to drain abscesses or remove dead bone (sequestra), and reconstruction if large portions of bone need to be resected.
Root Amputation and Perio Esthetic SurgeryDr AJINS CB
This case report describes the successful treatment of a patient with gingival recession and root exposure on the upper right first premolar. Treatment involved non-surgical therapy followed by endodontic treatment, resection of the exposed buccal root, and perio-plastic surgery using a lateral pedicle flap and bone graft to cover the partially visible palatal root. At 1-year post-op, there was no further recession and the tooth was successfully salvaged, demonstrating that advanced perio-plastic procedures can restore esthetics and treat furcation involvement even in premolars.
This document summarizes a study comparing surgery-first and orthodontic-first approaches for correcting facial asymmetry. The study included 59 patients divided into the two groups. Results found no significant differences in surgical outcomes between the approaches for horizontal or vertical asymmetry. The surgery-first approach had a shorter overall treatment period and improved facial aesthetics immediately after surgery by avoiding decompensation during orthodontic treatment. The conclusion is that the new classification of facial asymmetry as horizontal or vertical can be useful for treating patients regardless of treatment approach.

Guided tissue regeneration (GTR) uses barrier membranes to exclude epithelial and gingival connective tissue from accessing root surfaces in order to promote regeneration of periodontal tissues. The key concepts of GTR include Melcher's concept that the cell type which repopulates the root surface determines attachment outcomes. Non-resorbable and resorbable membranes have been developed for use as barriers in GTR procedures. Factors like patient characteristics, defect morphology, surgical technique, and membrane properties influence clinical outcomes of GTR for treating conditions like intrabony defects.
Mandibular fractures are common facial injuries, often caused by motor vehicle accidents or assaults, especially in males aged 21-30. The mandible lacks strong support, so its prominent position makes it vulnerable to fractures. Common fracture sites are the body, condyle, and angle of the mandible. Associated injuries are also common, such as head injuries. A thorough examination is needed to properly diagnose and classify the fracture.
Periodontal Treatment Planning & Phase I TherapyRiad Mahmud
The document discusses periodontal treatment planning and phase I therapy. It begins by outlining the importance of establishing treatment goals, including immediate, intermediate, and long-term goals. The goals of treatment are to eliminate infection and inflammation, reduce pocket depth, and establish periodontal health to maintain oral function and health over the long term. Nonsurgical therapy generally begins with scaling and root planing to reduce infection, followed by reevaluation and possible surgical therapy if needed. The maintenance of oral hygiene is essential for long-term periodontal health.
Calculation of Clinical Attachment Level is very important to diagnosis of periodontal diseases. This file is more required to dental students and dentist.
This document discusses furcation involvement, which refers to the progression of periodontal disease between the roots of multi-rooted teeth. It first defines furcation involvement and notes that it presents challenges for diagnosis and treatment. It then discusses the etiology of furcation involvement, including plaque-associated inflammation and pulpo-periodontal disease. It also describes Glickman's classification system for the horizontal component of furcation involvement, including four grades based on the amount of interradicular bone loss present. The presence of furcation involvement can indicate advanced periodontitis and affect the prognosis for the affected tooth.
Full Mouth Disinfection Versus Scaling and Root Planing per Quadrant in Agg...DR. ZERAIBI N
This document summarizes a systematic review comparing the effectiveness of full-mouth disinfection (FMD) versus scaling and root planing by quadrant (SRP-Q) for treating aggressive periodontitis. The review included two studies that found:
1) FMD resulted in slightly greater reductions in probing depth and clinical attachment loss compared to SRP-Q in some cases, but differences were minor.
2) One study found a statistically significant difference in bleeding on probing favoring FMD, while the other found no significant differences between the treatments.
3) Due to limitations and heterogeneity between studies, the review could not draw clear conclusions about the comparative effectiveness of FMD versus SRP-Q for treating aggressive periodontitis
This presentation describes the gingival recession, its classifications and theories of pathogenesis and different etiological factors in its progression.
This document discusses periodontal regeneration techniques. It defines regeneration as the renewal of tissues through growth and differentiation of new cells. Repair restores continuity but does not result in new attachment. New attachment embeds new periodontal ligament fibers into cementum. Autografts use bone from the patient while allografts use bone from others. Various graft materials, membranes, and biological modifiers are discussed that can enhance periodontal regeneration results. Maintaining good oral hygiene is important for sustaining positive outcomes.
