The plot of the novella Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad centers around a
seafarer named Marlow and his journey up the Congo River and his exploits there
during a time of imperialism. Once Marlow joins the Company as a captain for a
ship heading to the Congo to trade, he encounters instances of oppression of the
African natives by members of the Company. This character narrates the majority of
the novel and often takes on the role of a passive observer, although he sometimes
gives his input on the situation. In recent years, the state of Marlow and even
Conrad s opinions on race have been questioned due to the thematic element of
oppression of blacks by whites presented in this work. Though many believe Heart of

Reflective Essay On Meditation
Meditation is a state of consciousness without focus on the world around you. The
goal of meditation varies for each individual, but it is typically done to achieve a
sense of calm, reduce anxiety, become self aware, and gain a broader sense of
perspective. There are various activities that are meditative and can deliver the mind
clearing sensation, but I chose the traditional form of seated meditation. When I chose
meditation as my personal life change, I had no desired outcome. I simply chose
meditation because of my interest in Buddhism, and maybe even the opportunity
to one of those pretentious people who brag about how spiritually whole they are.
Meditation can be done anywhere as long as you re in a comfortable, seated
position. However, I found that there are other contributing factors to a successful
meditation. After my first attempt meditating, I came to the realization that it is
much simpler to clear your mind in certain locations. I began meditating in the
comfort of my home alongside a scented candle, but I noticed quite quickly that it
is a lot easier to reduce stress when you aren t able to hear the sources of your stress
parading around in the kitchen. After moving my meditation location to a hammock
in my backyard, I was able to focus on my breath, the delicate inhalations and

Told by Rebecca, one of the 13 year old twins that has been born and raised in a strict

Island, and then follows the young girls as they go through the exciting, yet nerve
wracking, time of becoming betrothed. Exciting because the girls wish to fulfil their
godly duties ; nerve wracking because they know they have no choicein who they will
be ordered to marry. The novel is harrowing at times, as the sectuses selective Bible
teachings to maintain control over their followers. They also use The Rule , a set
of laws developed by leaders, to keep order though these rules seem mainly
concerned with controlling the minds and bodies of women. However, the beauty
of this story being narrated by Rebecca is that the details of life in the sect are
presented in a non judgmental way. Rebecca is simply stating the way things are it
is all she knows so it is not a better or worse way of life, it just is. The ending is
particularly powerful. I could imagine the impact the running away scene would
have if it occurred in real life. I highly recommend this book to everyone in fact,
because Beale authored the novel as a non biased account of moral choices Rebecca
