AOL began as an online service provider and grew through acquisitions. It expanded internationally including to Japan in 1996 through a joint venture with Mitsui & Co. and Nikkei. However, AOL Japan struggled to gain market share due to differences from the US market including higher costs, lack of mailing lists, and Japanese PC manufacturers dominating the ISP business. To succeed, AOL Japan should have partnered with NTT DoCoMo, acquired smaller ISPs, and developed marketing strategies tailored to the Japanese market.
