Cross Platform App Development with C++
After reimplement many features several times in different platforms is time to think that it should be a better way. There are many frameworks that allows the developers to write the code once and deploy it "everywhere", but the final result is an app with a non native look and feel or with an emulated look and feel that the users can see and rate according to the quality.
There are other ways to develop apps for multiple platforms without rewriting the same code over and over. I'll talk about one of that ways which consists on developing the core with C++ and implement the UI natively. This method could sound very scary because of the C++ reputation (memory leaks, the standard library, etc), but with C++11 all this has been improved in a very sweet way, so maybe it is time to take an other look at this language and see how can we take advantage of it.

The Linux 4.x series introduced a new powerful engine of programmable tracing (BPF) that allows to actually look inside the kernel at runtime. This talk will show you how to exploit this engine in order to debug problems or identify performance bottlenecks in a complex environment like a cloud. This talk will cover the latest Linux superpowers that allow to see what is happening “under the hood” of the Linux kernel at runtime. I will explain how to exploit these “superpowers” to measure and trace complex events at runtime in a cloud environment. For example, we will see how we can measure latency distribution of filesystem I/O, details of storage device operations, like individual block I/O request timeouts, or TCP buffer allocations, investigating stack traces of certain events, identify memory leaks, performance bottlenecks and a whole lot more.

GPU Acceleration for Containers on Intel Processor Graphics

Container is a popular technology in cloud with the merits of fast provisioning, high density and near-native performance. New requirements have been rising to further use GPU to accelerate various applications in containers, e.g. media trans-coding, machine learning, etc. However there is still gap of managing GPU in such container usages. This presentation will first review the status of GPU support on both native container and Intel clear container, then provide an anatomy of technical gaps and enabling plans in major areas (orchestration layer, resource isolation and QoS performance isolation), then review our work for GPU virtualization in clear container and prototype work through extensions in docker plugin, cgroup and GPU scheduler to fix those gaps.

Debugging PySpark - PyCon US 2018
Apache Spark is one of the most popular big data projects, offering greatly improved performance over traditional MapReduce models. Much of Apache Spark’s power comes from lazy evaluation along with intelligent pipelining, which can make debugging more challenging. This talk will examine how to debug Apache Spark applications, the different options for logging in PySpark, as well as some common errors and how to detect them.
Spark’s own internal logging can often be quite verbose, and this talk will examine how to effectively search logs from Apache Spark to spot common problems. In addition to the internal logging, this talk will look at options for logging from within our program itself.
Spark’s accumulators have gotten a bad rap because of how they interact in the event of cache misses or partial recomputes, but this talk will look at how to effectively use Spark’s current accumulators for debugging as well as a look to future for data property type accumulators which may be coming to Spark in future version.
In addition to reading logs, and instrumenting our program with accumulators, Spark’s UI can be of great help for quickly detecting certain types of problems.
Debuggers are a wonderful tool, however when you have 100 computers the “wonder” can be a bit more like “pain”. This talk will look at how to connect remote debuggers, but also remind you that it’s probably not the easiest path forward.

Checking Notepad++: five years later
This year PVS-Studio static analyzer turned 10. Although, we should clarify the point that 10 years ago it was called Viva64. Another interesting point: it's been 5 years since the previous check of the Notepad++ project. During this period of time the analyzer was significantly improved: about 190 new diagnostics were added and the old ones got refined. However, we cannot expect to see a large number of errors in Notepad++. It is quite a small project that has only 123 files with the source code. Nevertheless, there are still errors that are worth fixing.

Edward Kandrot is a senior software engineer on NVIDIA’s CUDA Algorithms team, has more than twenty years of industry experience optimizing code performance for firms including Adobe, Microsoft, Google, and Autodesk.
GPU Acceleration for Containers on Intel Processor Graphics
Presentation delivered at the 2017 LinuxCon China.
Container is a popular technology in cloud with the merits of fast provisioning, high density and near-native performance. New requirements have been rising to further use GPU to accelerate various applications in containers, e.g. media trans-coding, machine learning, etc. However there is still gap of managing GPU in such container usages. This presentation will first review the status of GPU support on both native container and Intel clear container, then provide an anatomy of technical gaps and enabling plans in major areas (orchestration layer, resource isolation and QoS performance isolation), then review our work for GPU virtualization in clear container and prototype work through extensions in docker plugin, cgroup and GPU scheduler to fix those gaps.

Debugging PySpark - PyCon US 2018
Apache Spark is one of the most popular big data projects, offering greatly improved performance over traditional MapReduce models. Much of Apache Spark’s power comes from lazy evaluation along with intelligent pipelining, which can make debugging more challenging. This talk will examine how to debug Apache Spark applications, the different options for logging in PySpark, as well as some common errors and how to detect them.
Spark’s own internal logging can often be quite verbose, and this talk will examine how to effectively search logs from Apache Spark to spot common problems. In addition to the internal logging, this talk will look at options for logging from within our program itself.
Spark’s accumulators have gotten a bad rap because of how they interact in the event of cache misses or partial recomputes, but this talk will look at how to effectively use Spark’s current accumulators for debugging as well as a look to future for data property type accumulators which may be coming to Spark in future version.
In addition to reading logs, and instrumenting our program with accumulators, Spark’s UI can be of great help for quickly detecting certain types of problems.
Debuggers are a wonderful tool, however when you have 100 computers the “wonder” can be a bit more like “pain”. This talk will look at how to connect remote debuggers, but also remind you that it’s probably not the easiest path forward.

Checking Notepad++: five years later
This year PVS-Studio static analyzer turned 10. Although, we should clarify the point that 10 years ago it was called Viva64. Another interesting point: it's been 5 years since the previous check of the Notepad++ project. During this period of time the analyzer was significantly improved: about 190 new diagnostics were added and the old ones got refined. However, we cannot expect to see a large number of errors in Notepad++. It is quite a small project that has only 123 files with the source code. Nevertheless, there are still errors that are worth fixing.
