My Idea of Adaptation from Written Work o Film
Critical Reflection At the beginning of the module my understanding of what adaptation meant was
that you would take a work and recreate it in a different form. Adaptation, according to the traditional
comparatitive model, is the process of adapting one original, culturally defined standard whole in
another medium, (Cardwell, 2002, p19). I believed the definition of adaptation to require a high level
of fidelity to the source text. My opinion before the module was based on the adaptations in popular
culture, mainly those of books being made into films. With Peter Jackson s Lord of the Rings films,
there was definitely an expectation from the audience that the films would be like they imagined the
books to be: that the director would be true to Tolkien s novels. There is a commercial pressure for the
director to stay as close to the original as possible, to ensure its success. Cardwell makes the
distinction between genetic and cultural adaptation, saying that where genetic adaptation is linear,
with each one being linked to the one before, whereas cultural adaptation always comes from the
original source (2002). Each subsequent adaptation is understood to hold a direct relationship with the
culturally established original, (pg14). As I started to consider the source text I was going to use,
several questions buzzed round my head. What did I want to adapt? What form would it take? How
would I make it work in my chosen form? How could I please the audience? The Streets

Tragic Heroism of Creon Essay
Aristotle once said that a Greek Tragedy must include an important person that has a flaw. By this
flaw, the audience should feel pity and fear. Creon, a character in the Greek tragedy Antigone ,
resembles a perfect example of a tragic hero. This play was written by Sophocles, a historic
playwright during the 5th century. It begins with the illegal burial of Polyneices, Antigone s beloved
brother. Creon, the King of Thebes, is coerced to condemn his niece Antigone to death. Being loyal to
his city, Creon follows through with his punishment of Antigone. By doing so, his character is
changed forever. Creon has the qualities of a tragic hero: he is a good person with superior status, he
has a tragic flaw, and he comes to realize the role he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As simple as that (Sophocles 7). This shows that Creon has the power to condemn the people of his
city to death and with his power he decides the fate of Antigone. By having goodness and superiority
Creon changes the lives of many characters, both good and bad.
A tragic flaw is one of the most important qualities of a tragic hero. The change in most of the
characters was a result of Creon s tragic flaws. Creon may think he is infallible, but really he has many
flaws that lead to his downfall. The first is anger, which causes Creon to make poor choices. After a
heated debate with his son Haemon, Creon becomes angry and says, I ll take her to a deserted spot /
And bury her alive in a trench (Sophocles 20). Through Creon s anger he influences Antigone s death
and by doing so, she commits suicide. Aside from having anger, Creon is also a stubborn person. By
his stubbornness he does not want to be proven wrong so he says, You ll never persuade me to bury
that corpse (Sophocles 24). He shows his stubbornness by saying that he will never change his mind
about Antigone. When Teiresias, the fortuneteller, hears this he explains to Creon that if he does not
change his mind he will cause another death. After hearing this Creon must bury the body of
Polyneices and free Antigone, because fate never lies. Little does he know that he is too late and the
prophecy comes true. The last tragic flaw of Creon is that he is filled with temerity. Creon is

Advantages Of Video Conferencing
In this era, people are connected with each other through technology. Continuous advancements and
innovation in communication technology has now allowed businesses access to more effective and
sophisticated modes of communication. Video conferencing is a communication platform that is
widely used in a many commercial organizations. With advances in wireless communication
technology, today s several business environments can maximize the use of video conferencing
technology to promote face to face communication in real time from anywhere at any time. The
advantages of video conferencing at companies are very wide. From reducing travel costs to saving

Many business setups nowadays have their staff and experts spread out across various location. While
occasional business meetings, which require traveling are also quite common. Many organizations
now realize the competitive advantage, which video conferencing offers. Products being developed are
being promptly introduced to the market, issues are resolved more quickly, everyone who is a
participant in the decision does not have to travel just to be in a meeting (Denstadli, Gripsrud,
Hjorthol, Julsrud, 2013). Business communication is vital for businesses to maintain competitiveness.
Videoconferencing eliminates the barriers of business communication and enables employees in
different locations to view body languages, facial expressions and listen to voices. Video conferencing
makes business communication vivid and easy, it will make it productive. Therefore, especially when
doing business around the world, it is essential to have a video conference for business
communication (Denstadli, Julsrud, Hjorthol, 2012). The initial quantifiable and perceived gain of
video conferencing was a reduction in travel expenses. Initially, many organizations paid for travel
budget reduction and video conference deployment. Travel savings were a visible advantage of video
conferencing, but there are more qualitative advantages. Other major benefits that video conferencing
offers are increased efficiency and productivity, enhanced business opportunities and better

Social Norms Within Our Society
Social norms are behaviors that are expected within our society. When we see these norms out in
public we might not acknowledge them because we re expected to know how to act in different places
or situations. When these norms are violated people may be confused of the situation and can become
confused, annoyed, or mad. Social norms are a part of our everyday lives since before we were born
there were norms laid out for us already, from the way we re supposed to behave, dress, and even talk.
Norms have high value in our society they are the standards by which people define what is desirable
or undesirable, good or bad beautiful or ugly . There re what we expect in our society from our
behavior at school, in public, or school. Each place has a certain norm we as a society should know
when and how to follow. As a guest at someone s house, whether it s at a families, friends, or strangers
the norm has always been the same. We have to show respect to the owners and their property, be
polite, and show good manners while there. So for my own personal norm violation I decided to break
the guest at someone s house norm. This was taken place at one of my mother s close friends house
who had invited us over for dinner an afternoon, I had been thinking for a while on what norm to
break and how. None of my family knew what I had plan to do that afternoon, so it was going to
surprise them also. As a Mexican family my parents raised my siblings and I to always show respect

The Importance Of Refugees In Australia
Asylum seekers or refugees have fled their countries due to volatile circumstances such as war, or fear
of prosecution. Upon arrival in Australia they are moved to detention centres. Detention centres hold
people who have come without a visa, any non national and all unauthorised boat arrivals (Australian
Human Rights Commission, 2014). These centres hold refugees for indefinite periods and in poor
conditions. They are used as a spectacle to represent illegality and a threat to Australian society
(Marfleet, 2007, p672).
The spectacle of detention centres does not only lie within public perception but also within the
architecture of the facility (Grinceri, 2016, p170 171). The barbed wired fence of detention centres is
an example. It allows the spectators (citizens) to witness the enclosure of refugees while
simultaneously binding refugees within its constraints, punishingly (Pugilese, 2008, p206 207). The
visibility provided by the wired fence enables photography and videoing, thus acting as a spectacle.
This spectacle is related to the ideals of torture. They are tortured and punished based on exclusions
and exception. The refugees held in detention centres form the exception. They are the Other which no
one wishes to become and are a danger to society. Those tortured are viewed as deserving because
they are seen as a threat. The power to make decisions about who can and cannot enter Australia lies
within the (Government) Sovereignty (Georgatos, 2017). The sovereign

Manmohan Singh
In June of 1991, India was four weeks away from defaulting on its external balance of payment
obligations. India had $600 million in federal reserves, barely enough to pay for three weeks of
essential imports. It was during this time that the former Prime Minister of India N. Rao elected
Manmohan Singh as the Finance Minister. With the coming of Manmohan Singh came many
economic reforms. These reforms helped pull India from massive debt and near collapse. This leads
many to the question, How did the economic policies of Manmohan Singh help India emerge from the
1991 economic crisis?
Right before the Prime Minister Rao took office; the former Prime Minister had sought out an

One such example of multinational and domestic competition was when Quest started offering internet
services, moving their call center to New Delhi as well. Reliance Industries Limited, based in
Mumbai, also offered, internet service, among other things. Based in Mumbai, they had to be very
exact on how to retain the remaining customers that had flocked to Quest. By lowering prices and
establishing a strong consumer fan base, they were able to overtake Quest within India within ten
years. The opening of the economy led to a more freedom, helping to raise the self image of Indian
economy.
Manmohan Singh made another choice that helped push the entire economy out of the ditch that it was
trapped in. He made the choice to deregulate and privatize underperforming businesses, helping to
increase GDP, as well as relieve internal government debt. Before the 1991 crisis, one could not own a
business without explicit permission form the government s financial department, or if you completed
a rigorous paperwork completion course called License Raj that took months, in some cases a whole
year to complete. When the crisis hit, India s debt stood at 68.05% of the GDP. To remove this debt,
Manmohan Singh removed the License Raj, replacing it with more simplistic paperwork to obtain a
business license. This encouraged

The Corporate Strategy Of Nintendo
Nintendo, when it was created, it became one of the most important video game companies in the
world but, little by little it lost importance after the competition boom. The growing use of
smartphones and tablets for gaming threatens the market for consoles specifically meant for gaming.
The convenience and utility of having one product, like a smartphone or tablet, rather than multiple
devices for different uses gives the smartphone an advantage. Main competitors are similar in size and

Franklin came down with polio while at Campobello for summer vacation. Poliomyelitis (polio) is
disease that affects the muscle and the nerves and can lead to partial or full paralysis. Symptoms of
polio include fever, muscle spasms, and muscle pain. The treatment is heat pads to reduce pain,
therapy and pain killers. Franklin was paralyzed from the chest down at first than the disease relaxed
and only paralyzed him from the hips down. No one knew how polio was contracted. It may have
been because of the exhausting weeks with the Navy Administration or from the chill he received after
falling in to a cold bay while fishing. It also may have been the combo of tiredness and the chill
(Tugwell 56). Doctors were called for a diagnosis and each time they gave a wrong diagnosis. It wasn
t until two weeks after contracting the disease that a specialist gave a correct diagnosis and it was two
weeks after the specialist came that Franklin was transported to New York for therapy (57). He was so
determined to overcome his disability that he devoted seven years of his life to grueling physical
therapy (Goodwind 109). But unfortunately he would never walk again without the help of steel
braces on his legs and a strong arm to lean on.

Macbeth: Easy Questions, Difficult Answers
DERICK MARSH
Macbeth is not an obscure play. The course of the action, unlike that of Hamlet, can easily be
summarized. Most readers and audiences can come to some general agreement on what the play is
about, provided that they can offer answers to the two major questions of understanding that the play
poses. These answers, it need hardly be said, cannot be precise and absolute, since Shakespeare s
plays, like life, never allow us the delusion of perfect understanding. Nevertheless, we do need to
decide what we are invited to think and feel about Macbeth and what he does. In particular, we have to
consider why he acts as he does; why, in the first place, he kills Duncan, and then why, acting ... Show

of his being dragged in a direction he doesn t want to go, by what one of our current jargons would
call a sexually potent, high dominance female. The relation between them is more interesting than
that. The deed they plan, the murder of a good, old, defenceless King, who is their kinsman and their

unsex me here speech she tries deliberately to suppress her own humanity, transposing the horror of
the deed into images of a terrible resolution, so that she will be able to do something that she knows is
vile. Of course she cannot wholly succeed. The sleeping King reminds her of her father; the blood that
is spilt returns to haunt her and drive her to distraction. She, like Macbeth himself, is far too
vulnerable to be seen as any kind of embodiment of pure evil. Macbeth s state of mind is more
complex, and perhaps therefore more likely to

Thomas Paine s Influence On The American Revolution
Thomas Paine (1736 1809) was an English American writer and political theorist, whose work,
especially the Common Sense, has greatly influence the America Revolution in the eighteenth century.
Paine wrote the pamphlet Common Sense during 1775 and 1776, in which he advocated independence
of the American Colonies from Great Britain. At the suggestion of Benjamin Franklin, the man he met
in London, Paine emigrated to America and landed at Philadelphia on November 30, 1774. At first, he
published the African Slavery to criticize the brutal and inequitable slavery. As a co editor of the
Pennsylvania Magazine, Paine had sensed the rebellious spirit in the Colonies. At that time, the Sons
of Liberty has led the protest called the Boston Tea Party ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As the necessary evil , the government should play its function solely on protecting freedom and
security. The ideal status for people was to live without government, and the need for the government
was only to mitigate the problems brought by the anarchic way of life. Paine also pointed out the
problems of monarchy, in which he argued that all men were created equal so the idea that one man
was better off the others had violated this equal right (Shi and Mayer, 100). The practice of hereditary
succession would brought a series of problems, such as corruption and war. Besides, Paine made
arguments further by analyzing the current situation of America. In regards to the comments that
Britain has led to the flourish of America, Paine noted that the Americans themselves contributed to
the achievement and they could live without the help of Britain. The supervision from Britain was for
their own sake rather than that of America. Final, Paine indicated that breaking away from Britain was
an inevitable trend for America. In the long run, America would benefit from independent a lot. It
could not only acquire international status, but also could gain assistance from other

Signs of Nihilism in Tyler from Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk
In the society, man individuals are troubled by the social rules. Indeed, some of them develop
measures to escape the rules, which govern personal conduct. Nihilism acknowledges that all human
values are baseless, and it is impossible to know anything with certainty (Wilshire 4). It is a belief that
people adopt to reach total anarchism. Wilshire (5) contends that people with anarchistic values are
troubled, and they may require psychological assistance. In Chuck Palahniuk s novel Fight club, Tyler
embodies these qualities. This paper will shows that Tyler is a nihilist, since he does not believe in any
human values, and he is not loyal to anyone.
Tyler is a nihilist because he does not believe in the value of friendship or loyalty. Tyler s main drive is
to destroy the narrator s life. Tyler has not emotional connection to people, and he also has no regrets.
He, eventually, forces this philosophy onto the narrator and thereby transforms him into Tyler Durden.
In the first chapters of the novel, it is difficult to distinguish the narrator and Tyler because of the
effect that Tyler had on the narrator s personality. Tyler emphasizes this point when he says, I used to
be a nice person (Palahniuk 98). Eventually, Tyler destroys the narrator s humanity and pulls him from
the senses that control societal actions.
Tyler is a nihilist because he has no regard for community rules or respect for other people. When he

Pros And Disadvantages Of Evolution
Serious scientific publications disputing evolution are all but nonexistent. Most claims that deniers of
the evolution manage to come up with are effortlessly refuted with the help of logic and common
sense. Even if their objections are flimsy, the sheer number and diversity of the claims challenging the
ideas of evolution can put even well informed people at a disadvantage. One of the strongest
arguments providing grounds for doubting evolution is so called irreducible complexity which says
that living things have tremendously complex features at the anatomical, cellular and molecular levels
that could not function if they were any less intricate or sophisticated. This argument may be
considered quite strong because even Charles Darwin wrote in chapter 6 of his famous work On the
Origin of Species : If it could be dеmonstrated that any complex organ existed, which could not
possibly have been formed by numerous, successive, slight modifications, my theory would absolutely
break down. [5]
Indeed, many people find it difficult to imagine how from two elementary notions random mutation,
and the filtering power of the environment have emerged, over millennia, such marvels as eyes, the
wings of birds and the human brain. According to Michael Behe, researcher of biochemistry and
professor at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania, evolution simply cannot produce complex structures
in a single generation as would be required for the formation of irreducibly complex

Speech And Persuasive Speech
When I was in middle school around the sixth grade, a student in my class always picked on me and
made me feel embarrassed every time the word was said. The bully would call me that name every
time we were near each other or if we had a group and had to chat about a topic. It was completely
embarrassing and stressful because it was constant so it was all the time and the bully would never
learn because he never cared. So I was always OSTRICH. The dictionary definition of ostrich is a
large, two toed, swift footed flightless bird (dictionary.com). And connotations of the word can be
hurtful and stressful for most people having to be called a wild animal and if the animal isn t so bright.
And it may seem funny to other people but it is just hurtful to try and compare someone s appearance
to a wild animal. Why Ostrich is so important as a shameful word is because it is being called a wild,
dumb animal and basically is making fun of your body shape as well and words can hurt more then
your emotions.

Similarities Between Lord Of The Flies And The Hunger Games
District 12. Where you can starve to death in safety (6). This is a quote from the book The Hunger
Games, by Suzanne Collins, and it is a prime example of the dystopian society the book is set in.
Another book set in a dystopian society is Lord of the Flies, by William Golding. The Hunger Games
is a book about a society where every year, 24 people are sent to fight to the death in the Hunger
Games. Lord of the Flies is about a big group of young children getting trapped on an island and
having to figure out how to survive on their own without any adults. Both the novel Lord of The Flies
and the book The Hunger Games present societies that are vicious and cruel, in similar settings, even
though there are some differences between the two stories. One similarity between both books is the
use of fire. At the beginning of Lord of the Flies fire is used to try to give a signal to passing ships that
there are children trapped on the island. If a ship comes near the island they may not be able to notice
us. So we must make smoke on top of the mountain. We must make a fire (33). At the beginning of
The Hunger Games fire is used to gain the Capitol s attention during the ceremony where all tributes
ride on chariots. I want the audience to recognize you when you re in the arena, says Cinna dreamily.
Katniss, the girl who was on fire (67). In both situations, fire is used to gain attention of people who
will be able to help them in the future, whether it s giving them a gift during the Games, or rescuing
them. However, later on in the stories fire is used differently. At the end of Lord of the Flies, Jack s
group uses fire to try to burn down the forest in order to find and kill Ralph. The fire was a big one
and the drum roll that he had thought had left so far behind was nearer (182). This quote is from a part
when Ralph is hiding in the currently burning down forest, trying to escape from Jack. In The Hunger
Games, fire is used to burn down part of the arena for the Games, in order to bring Katniss closer to
the other tributes. This fire is designed to flush us out, to drive us together (173). One difference
between the two books is the idea of unique appearances. In Lord of the Flies, there is the

The Importance Of Use
Notwithstanding its prominence in the literature, a major shortcoming of the TAM method is its
utilitarian focus on cognition and intentionality, rather than affect and emotions. While this may be
useful for explaining SNS account creation, it is insufficient for explaining continuous SNS use and
engagement. Furthermore, the framework assumes that all users have the same preferences for the
same technical factors, such as usability. This view completely neglects that users may adapt SNSs for
their own idiosyncratic purposes that may defy the original intentions of designers. As a case in point,
Lu and Lin (2011) demonstrate that perceived enjoyment is a significant predictor of continued SNS
use even more so than other design based ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Other scholars have continued to criticise the over reliance on Facebook in this field of research.
Stoycheff and colleagues (2017, p.9) point out that 559 (84.3%) of the reviewed publications were
single medium studies that examined one SNS in isolation. This represents a burgeoning literature on
the effects of Facebook use, but we oftentimes forget to ask, why we are studying Facebook in the first
place despite the wealth of alternative platforms. Single platform often studies run the risk of
potentially omitting important distinctions between different SNSs in terms of their social affordances,
audiences and uses. Furthermore, focusing on one particular SNS paints only a partial picture of how
people use and are affected by social media (Kim 2014, p.2). This may limit the generalisability of
studies due implicit biases towards particular user groups, usage patterns, platform policies and social
affordances. Examining a social media platform in isolation, as opposed to being part of a larger social
media environment, may thus inadvertently inhibit the reliability, generalisability and interpretation of
results. Despite the wealth of studies on users motivations for joining individual SNSs, in addition to
recent scholarly work on the gratifications obtained from each site (Papacharissi Mendelson 2011;
Shao 2009; Whiting Williams 2013), little

Kolya s Characteristic In City Of Thieves By David Benioff
City Of Thieves Author David Benioff of the suspenseful novel, City of Thieves, does a remarkable
job at developing the witty, humorous, brave, and optimistic character known as Kolya. Kolya begins
this novel as an unlikable and unpleasant character but gradually redeems himself by displaying more
admirable traits. Throughout this intriguing novel, despite his arrogance and frequent reckless
behavior, Kolya has proven to be a very likeable and sympathetic character.
Kolya, an alleged deserter of the red army during World War II was first portrayed and thought of by
others as bold and overconfident. With his manacles hands, he managed to push up the left sleeve of

Throughout the story, it is made evident that Kolya truly does sympathize with Lev. Kolya never
wants Lev to feel badly about himself. He never fails to give Lev encouragement in hope of lifting his
spirits. You didn t want to go up to that apartment. I was the country fool who insisted on it. So you
don t owe me an apology. And i don t think you re a coward. Anyone with a spoonful of sanity would
have run. (Benioff 65). This is a perfect example of Kolya giving Lev encouragement and
sympathizing with the fact that Lev felt bad for leaving Kolya in the apartment to fight the Giant
alone. I find it thoughtful that Kolya didn t want Lev to feel down or bad about himself so he
proceeded to tell Lev that anyone with common sense would have ran and even though he fled, it
doesn t reflect on his strength and bravery. While this is just one example of Kolyas compassion, his
sympathy is shown in more ways than just one. He opened his eyes, his pale blue cossack eyes, and
smiles at me. We both knew he was going to die. He trembled lying on the back seat beneath his great
coat, his teeth very white against his blue lips. I have always believed that smile was a gift for me.
Kolya had no faith in the divine or the afterlife; he didn t think he was going to a better place, or any
place at all. No angels waited to collect him.

them in ways that I have not experienced in High School. Instead of discussing the texts based on
random details that we find in the text, we discussed what the text meant to the overall story, or better
yet, what the evidence said about the culture of the story and human nature. I learned a great deal
about the diverse meanings of human life, and I learned about various cultures and pieces of their
history. Additionally, we wrote papers based on textual evidence to argue points in a way on a higher
level than I was used to. My argumentative ability evolved from using plot summary into deeply
analyzing parts of the text to prove a point. From developing concrete skills to the cultural content I
was exposed to, I have grown from this semester in The Human Event.
When I started the semester in The Human Event, I had little ability of supporting my position
effectively. When I wrote my first paper in The Human Event, I defaulted to the standard of argument
that was present in high school: I summarized the plot of the text. Even to the foundation of my
roadmap, I attempted to follow a chronological order to Gilgamesh, as I specifically stated that I have
structured this paper to follow the order of the plot . In the rest of my paper, I didn t even follow the
plot effectively. Instead of following the plot, I provided episodes within the plot. For example, I
jumped from writing

The Hurt Locker War Is A Drug Quotes
In the film The Hurt Locker directed by Kathryn Bigelow, the theme of war is a drug is shown
throughout the film. The film is about a bomb squad tasked with disarming bombs planted roadside, in
bundles and other more disturbing places in Iraq. However the film is really more focused on what
happens in the minds of soldiers under the constant adrenaline rush of war.
As I watched the movie I began to gain an understanding of the quote The rush of battle is often a
potent and lethal addiction, for war is a drug . This quote was said by Chris Hedges an American
journalist, activist and author. The quote plays a key part throughout the film and this is why it used as
the opening scene of film.

Sanborn says I m not ready to die, James. (James) Well, you re not going to die out here, bro.
(Sanborn) Another two inches? Shrapnel zings by; slices my throat. I ll bleed out like a pig in the
sand; nobody ll give a shit. I mean my parents? They ll care, but they don t count, man. Who else? I
don t even have a son. This shows that Sanborn is scared of what will happen next. He fears war and is
afraid of the consequences of it. For Sanborn war doesn t give him the same thrill as it does for James.
In fact it gives him the opposite effect.
James and Sanborn show two very different sides of war. An example of this is when Sergeant J.T

fact that James is addicted to war and the adrenaline of it. It also proves that Sanborn is perplexed as

Vaccinations Of The Smallpox Vaccine
Vaccinations were first introduced in the late 18th century by Edward Jenner. He injected a small
amount of cowpox in a thirteen year old boy to demonstrate the effectiveness it had against smallpox,
resulting in the development of the first smallpox vaccine in 1798. Because of his discovery, Jenner
contributed to the overall annihilation of the disease in 1979 after the vaccine was implemented in
different medicines throughout the world (source). Following Jenner, many others produced vaccines
to help reduce the fatalities of common diseases such as measles, polio, and rubella, which were once
responsible for millions of deaths every year. Now, there is almost no risk of catching these fatal
illnesses.
Even after vaccines were made popular, there have always been parents who have been concerned
about immunizing their children. It has become such an issue that there has been some debate on
whether or not the government should get involved and require vaccination by law. As with every
issue, there are two sides who stand firmly with their beliefs. Parents who do not vaccinate claim that
they have the right to decide what is best for their kid s health, and for some, it interferes with their
religion. The other side argues that children need vaccines to ensure the overall safety of the
individual and others around them. Though both sides provide a compelling argument, statistics show
that parents should be required by law to vaccinate their child.

Describe The Relationship Between Acid And Carbonic Acid
The acid balance must be regulated with a range of 7.35 and 7.45 in order for the body to function
normally. A pH of below 7.35 is considered acidic and a pH of above 7.45 is considered alkaline or
basic. Body acids exist in two forms; volatile and nonvolatile acids. Volatile acids can be eliminated as
CO2, usually known as carbonic acid, which is a weak acid. Nonvolatile acids can be eliminated by
the kidneys, example are sulfuric and phosphoric. These acids are strong compared to volatile acids.
When there are changes in pH (can be an increase in hydrogen ion or decrease) there are different
buffer systems that can help to regulate the pH, such as; the carbonic acid bicarbonate buffer, protein
buffer and renal buffer. Buffers absorb the excess hydrogen ion or hydroxyl ion and prevent a ... Show

The carbonic acid bicarbonate buffer is a major extracellular buffer, that operates in both the lungs and
kidneys. The lungs acts as a second defense responding quickly by decreasing the amount of carbonic
acid by blowing off carbon dioxide and leaving water. The kidneys acts as a third defense talking a
little longer to respond (hours to days versus seconds to minutes with the lungs). The kidneys reabsorb
bicarbonate or regenerate bicarbonate from carbon dioxide and water. These two systems work very
effectively together because the lungs can adjust acid concentration rapidly by ventilation and
bicarbonate is easily absorbed or regenerated by kidneys tubules, although more slowly. The way the
renal and respiratory systems adjust to primary changes in pH are known as compensation. The
respiratory system compensates for changes in pH by increasing or decreasing the concentration of
carbon dioxide by changing ventilation. The renal system compensates by producing more acidic or
more alkaline urine. The protein buffer system is both extracellular and intracellular,

Persuasive Essay On Bo Jackson
Excellence One quote a person says can change the rest of one s life. More specifically, Bo Jackson,
famous National Football League running back and Major League Baseball player has had his fair
share of both success and well spoken quotes. Jackson had the ability to be a hall of famer in both of
the sports, as he was one of the hardest workers to play the game and refused to be satisfied with
anything less than superp. Bo Jackson s once said, Set your goals high and don t stop till you get there,
contained some of the most inspirational words to flow out of a person s mouth. This quote demands
the people to set their goals high, work relentlessly until their goal is achieved, and to be ambitious.
Arguably, setting your goals high is what Bo Jackson was trying to say in his quote, and ultimately
achieve greatness. Setting your goals high is so important, and there are so many reasons on why to do
this. Primarily, setting high goals leads to the possibility for a greater return. This is because even if
one works as hard as possible and miss the ultimate goal it is very possible that he will have had more
success than if one only aimed for an easy tasks. Setting your goals high segues into the second
reason, which is that it will generate more momentum to work. For example if one is to complete a
small project in a week they might procrastinate until Rhinesmith 2 the last moment, naturally putting
in less effort. However if someone is to be given a difficult tasks they will naturally work much harder
to complete said task. When goals are set higher they will be placed at a higher standard if they
receive greater effort, giving the goal purpose. When one realizes that the goal they are set to achieve
has purpose, completing it will seem necessary. Working hard plays an extremely important role when
attempting to achieve a goal. Hard work is demonstrated in the part of the quote where Jackson says,
...don t stop till you get there.. This quote was said by one of the hardest workers of all time, Bo
Jackson, therefore this definitely plays a key role in success. Not only did he say this, but he meant
every single word in this quote, as one

kind, will think about others, and cares about school. Addie is more laid back and will forget about
school. I like Eva because of how caring she is, I do not like Addie as much because she seems like
the type of person that doesn t care about friendships. In a way, I was glad. It meant she couldn t grasp

Essay On Good Vs Evil Archetypes
Most stories, movies, and myths have the simple archetype of Good vs. Evil. This particular archetype
can often be confusing, because in stories the reader is often lead to believe that something or
someone represents good or evil, but it does not. More often than not the evil character is either crazy
or was raised wrongly. Evil characters in Good vs. Evil stories are often not truly evil but either
mental unstable or not taught right from wrong.
The entirety of the Inheritance series is based on two archetypes, Good vs. Evil and Man vs. Man.
These two archetypes are the underlying archetypes. Each book also has its own archetypes that
overlays the first two mentioned. One of the overlying archetypes, Crime pursued by Vengeance, is
only overlying throughout the first three books of the series, Eragon, Eldest, and the 1st quarter of

helps her lover take revenge upon his family, the royal family. Up until he dies, she is on a quest to
exact that revenge. Along the way her ability to create illusions, along with the frequency with which
she uses it, begins to degrade her mind she begins to hallucinate and become mentally unhinged. This
is where the reader comes into contact with the Madness archetype. She goes through a period of
maturation and transformation to become a powerful force, which overthrows the kingdom which fits
in the Ascension archetype. The Good vs. Evil archetype is visible here in the main character vs. Her
hallucinations which often coerce her into killing innocents. It is confusing because the evil force
seems like the royal family, but it is not

The Importance Of Ethical And Legal Rights Versus...
Childhood vaccinations have made headlines year after year since the beginning of time. Whether if it
s a moral or legal issue, it s a safety issue to the public. According to the Centers for Disease Control,
a total of 154 cases of the measles were reported in the United States, from January 1, 2015 to
February 20, 2015. As of February 23rd, 2015 Sandee LaMotte, a CNN reporter, explained via the
Centers for Disease Control has mentioned that the measles outbreak is continuing to grow daily. To
address this particular issue is to thoroughly explain the importance of ethical and legal rights versus
governmental officials laws and regulations. Vaccines are made up of bacteria, viruses or other
antigens that are given to stimulate the immune system to create antibodies which will try to prevent
future infections with the disease. The importance of vaccinating today s children is to protect
everyone around them and to protect our future generations to come. The CDC issued that 118 of the
reported 154 cases are connected to a large, continuous multi state measles outbreak that started in the
Disneyland amusement park in December of 2014. In connection to the Disneyland case, two other
ongoing outbreaks are located in Illinois with 14 cases linked to a daycare center, and Nevada that has
six cases of the measles. The majority of people who had developed the measles were unvaccinated. In
today s news, it is no secret how Americans feel about vaccinating their children. Barbara

Samuel Gompers Accomplishments
Samuel Gompers was born on January 27, 1850 in East London. Gompers was sent to a free jewish
school at the age of six. The education was short lived when he started work rolling cigars at ten years
old. In 1863 he and his family moved to a poor area in new york city, where Gompers took up cigar
making once more. From a very young age, Gompers was drawn to the work of small unions for cigar
makers. At just 16 he often spoke out toward employers about unfair treatment and quickly rose to the
top of union 15. Gompers found it hard to compete with with workers who got paid a fee for every
cigar they made, there was also competition with machines that could replace workers. Gompers was
influenced by the passion of the workers around him, despite many unsuccessful strikes. In 1875
Gompers and his friend Adolph Strasser founded the Cigar Makers International Union (CIU). He was

Combustion Of Fireworks Chemistry
Don t trust atoms, they make up everything. This is true for the reaction witnessed in the combustion
of fireworks. These pretty colours and lights are the result of a chemical reaction occurring, that
ignites the firework and turns into a colourful flame. This phenomenon can be tested inside a
laboratory using similar circumstances to that of a firework in the air. The test involves using
chemicals, similar to what is seen in fireworks and burning those chemicals under a blue flame, which
burns at 1500C. The purpose of this experiment was to observe the characteristic flame colours
produced by the metal salts burned under a blue flame. In chemistry, a salt is an ionic compound that

Because these levels are unstable, the electrons incline to fall down to the levels where they were
before, releasing energy as they do so. This energy is released as light energy, and as the amount of
energy released varies from other metal ions, it leads to the characteristic colours given by each metal
ion. Metal salts are used to the produce the colour seen; a fuel is needed to allow the ion to burn; a
chemical which provides oxygen for the combustion of the fuel; and a chlorine/ binding chemical to
help strengthen; and hold the mixture together. For example, if Sodium is placed into a flame, the
sodium ions, collect all the energy given from the flame, and then is exerted out when the ions start to
die. A sodium atom in an unexcited state has the structure 3s1, but when placed in the flame the
sodium will give an orange ting to the flame which results in the ions jumping into the next levels and
then eventually falling back from the 3p1 level to their normal 3s1 level. While it is unknown who
actually invented our found out the flame test, it can all be traced back to Michael Faraday (Born 22nd

I want you to imagine being 12 years old. You came to school one day and saw your name scrawled
all over the school toilet doors, accompanied by the terms faggot, gay and disgusting . I want you now
to stand in the shoes of Jake, an 11 year old transgender boy. You are currently being racially slurred,
beaten up and spat on by your mates , who discovered you were a tranny. I want you to stand on Ben s
point of view. And think, what if your coach kicked you out of your football team simply because you
weren t masculine enough for the sport? Finally, I want you to become Jane, a 13 year old born
transgender and because of this you are bullied every single day, from the moment you walk into the
school gates, everybody stares, like you are some sort of alien. Jane Marie Georgia a bright, cheery
7th grader, who just like you and me had a loving family and a favourite icecream flavour, committed
suicide on Thursday the 25th of May 2017, a day that couldn t be more ordinary for each and every
one of us sitting here. But for LGBTI students, every single day is filled to the brim with inequality
and danger.
Ladies and Gentlemen, over a tenth of our society is made up of the LGBTI ( the Lesbian, Gay,
Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex) community. In 2010, the Safe Schools Coalition Australia was
founded, this establishment brought hope and protection to hundreds upon thousands of students
experiencing bullying. However, being the nation we are, extreme right wing bigots are attempting to
withdraw this life saving initiative from nationwide primary and secondary schools.
I ask you, how is the sexuality of LGBTI children any different to our diversity in hair colour ? (is this
a good example)? In Australia, we are proud of our individuality and celebrate our differences. So,
why is something so valuable, so integral to our society used an excuse for the discrimination and
degradation of others? Why is it that right wing bigots and conservative MP s are starving vulnerable
children of protection and safety?
Our opposition complains relentlessly about how the safe schools approach is controversial and
ideological, accusing the initiative of promoting a radical view of gender

Plato In The Republic And Niccolo Machiavelli s The Prince
Plato and Machiavelli seek to examine necessary qualities leaders should possess to rule successfully.
Plato s examination of leaders can be considered deontologist (wherein morality determines decision
making) and idealistic whereas Machiavelli s examination is consequentialist (weighing potential
consequences determines decision making) and realistic. Using primary evidence from Plato s The
Republic and Niccolò Machiavelli s The Prince as well as an examination of controversial leaders like
Donald Trump, I will argue that Machiavelli s ruler traits to a state are superior to Plato s since they
are more realistic of human nature of political actors.
PLATO S LIVED WORLD: SETTING CONTEXT Plato lived in Ancient Athens through the
Peloponnesian War and a tyrannical government. After The Thirty Tyrants, Athens established a quasi
direct democratic government and invoked a lottery system to distribute power amongst the citizenry.
For Wallach, Plato s polis was was not a world inflected by [...], totalitarian regimes, [...] political
orders whose populations top one billion human beings, vast inequalities of wealth, [or] nuclear tipped
drones. Ancient Athens was a polis of trade, tourism and culture but it did not have the
frequency/severity of modern foreign policy issues that affected its decisions. This is crucial to Plato s
views on leadership and it justifies the temporal limitations of his theory.

Essay on How Technology is Represented in Star Wars
How Technology is Represented in Star Wars
When watching the film, Star Wars, it is impossible not to be aware of the technology that is
represented in the film, partly because it is so much more advanced than our own is now, but also
because we can imagine how we might someday acquire such technology. The central theme in Star
Wars is good versus evil, clearly demonstrated by the technology in the film. While the Rebels (the
good guys) use technology primarily to fight for freedom and quality of life for all, the Empire (the
bad guys) use technology to develop weapons of destruction and war in an attempt to rule the galaxy.
In addition to these two opposing sides, there is another group that doesn t use technology for war.

However, even if we don t look into the future, Star Wars can tell us volumes about how technology
can affect our society, especially as it pertains to war.
Through the ages there have been constant struggles to resolve disputes. However, as we can see
through our history, sometimes peaceful resolutions are not possible because of misunderstandings,
corruption, power, or greed. In these cases, one alternative to settling the dispute is war. Technology
plays an extremely important role in war, and this is clearly demonstrated in Star Wars. Star Wars
possesses similarities to our own culture and with the vast amounts of technology represented in the
film, it is an ideal choice to better understand our own society.
We are delighted to have the opportunity to examine Star Wars because we feel intimately connected
to the film and all that it represents. We grew up with R2D2, C3PO, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia,
Han Solo, and Chewbacca. We dressed up like them for Halloween, we played Star Wars games for
countless hours, we imagined ourselves using their futuristic technology, and now we want to study
how this artifact has affected our society and how it might affect our future.

In the movie, Star Wars, how is technology represented differently in its ability to help humankind
and/or destroy it?

System Development Life Cycle (SDLC)
The Systems development life cycle (SDLC) is a conceptual model that is used in the project
management which describes the stages involved in the information system development project, from
an initial feasibility study through maintenance of the completed application. SDLC is used to correct
problems in existing system, and to improve the system quality and structure. It certainly makes the
process easy for building a system and helps to reduce failures such as unclear objectives, possibility
of not meeting the user needs, or cost overruns. We can generally consider the SDLC in five phases.
These 5 phases are repeated until the desired or efficient output is achieved. The 5 phases of system
development life cycle are:
1. Planning
2. Analysis
3. Design
4. Implementation
5. Maintenance
1. Planning:
This phase begins when the project is defined and the appropriate resources have been selected. The
first part of the planning phase involves collecting, defining and validating functional, support and
training requirements. The second part involves developing initial life cycle management plans,
including project planning, project management, Configuration Management, support,

Engine Of Evolution Chapter Summaries
Chapter 1 What Is Evolution?
In chapter one of the selected text given it goes over six main components being: evolution,
gradualism, speciation, common ancestry, natural selection, and nonselective mechanisms of
evolutionary change. These six components are broken down from the larger idea that life began with
one species and eventually broke off and evolved into many new and different branches of species.
Even in reading this, I do not believe that we all came from one species. I feel that evolution is true to
an extent that while species do evolve over time (which is the concept of gradualism) we did not all
evolve from one parasitic creature. To start simply the first component evolution in itself to me means
that overtime a creature ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The main lesson of biogeography is that only evolution can explain the diversity of life on continents
and islands. (Coyne 109).In convergent evolution 3 of the six components discussed in chapter 1 are
working together. These 3 components are common ancestry, speciation, and natural selection. If
evolution did exist, ancestors of species today that lived in the same place, when dug up, should be
fossils that resemble organisms today.
Chapter 5 The Engine of Evolution In this chapter of the selected text for the course they talk of the
three things involved in adaptation. First and foremost, there has to be variation in the population,
second, the variation has to come from genes changes, and the third is that the genetic variation must
affect the probability of offspring. Evolution by selection is a combination of randomness and
lawfulness. (Coyne 118). I also learned that the only difference between natural selection and artificial
selection is that on one hand the changes occurring are being made to happen by a breeder (artificial)
whereas the other is random selection due to environmental and survival changes

  • 2. My Idea of Adaptation from Written Work o Film Critical Reflection At the beginning of the module my understanding of what adaptation meant was that you would take a work and recreate it in a different form. Adaptation, according to the traditional comparatitive model, is the process of adapting one original, culturally defined standard whole in another medium, (Cardwell, 2002, p19). I believed the definition of adaptation to require a high level of fidelity to the source text. My opinion before the module was based on the adaptations in popular culture, mainly those of books being made into films. With Peter Jackson s Lord of the Rings films, there was definitely an expectation from the audience that the films would be like they imagined the books to be: that the director would be true to Tolkien s novels. There is a commercial pressure for the director to stay as close to the original as possible, to ensure its success. Cardwell makes the distinction between genetic and cultural adaptation, saying that where genetic adaptation is linear, with each one being linked to the one before, whereas cultural adaptation always comes from the original source (2002). Each subsequent adaptation is understood to hold a direct relationship with the culturally established original, (pg14). As I started to consider the source text I was going to use, several questions buzzed round my head. What did I want to adapt? What form would it take? How would I make it work in my chosen form? How could I please the audience? The Streets ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Tragic Heroism of Creon Essay Aristotle once said that a Greek Tragedy must include an important person that has a flaw. By this flaw, the audience should feel pity and fear. Creon, a character in the Greek tragedy Antigone , resembles a perfect example of a tragic hero. This play was written by Sophocles, a historic playwright during the 5th century. It begins with the illegal burial of Polyneices, Antigone s beloved brother. Creon, the King of Thebes, is coerced to condemn his niece Antigone to death. Being loyal to his city, Creon follows through with his punishment of Antigone. By doing so, his character is changed forever. Creon has the qualities of a tragic hero: he is a good person with superior status, he has a tragic flaw, and he comes to realize the role he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As simple as that (Sophocles 7). This shows that Creon has the power to condemn the people of his city to death and with his power he decides the fate of Antigone. By having goodness and superiority Creon changes the lives of many characters, both good and bad. A tragic flaw is one of the most important qualities of a tragic hero. The change in most of the characters was a result of Creon s tragic flaws. Creon may think he is infallible, but really he has many flaws that lead to his downfall. The first is anger, which causes Creon to make poor choices. After a heated debate with his son Haemon, Creon becomes angry and says, I ll take her to a deserted spot / And bury her alive in a trench (Sophocles 20). Through Creon s anger he influences Antigone s death and by doing so, she commits suicide. Aside from having anger, Creon is also a stubborn person. By his stubbornness he does not want to be proven wrong so he says, You ll never persuade me to bury that corpse (Sophocles 24). He shows his stubbornness by saying that he will never change his mind about Antigone. When Teiresias, the fortuneteller, hears this he explains to Creon that if he does not change his mind he will cause another death. After hearing this Creon must bury the body of Polyneices and free Antigone, because fate never lies. Little does he know that he is too late and the prophecy comes true. The last tragic flaw of Creon is that he is filled with temerity. Creon is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Social Norms Within Our Society Social norms are behaviors that are expected within our society. When we see these norms out in public we might not acknowledge them because we re expected to know how to act in different places or situations. When these norms are violated people may be confused of the situation and can become confused, annoyed, or mad. Social norms are a part of our everyday lives since before we were born there were norms laid out for us already, from the way we re supposed to behave, dress, and even talk. Norms have high value in our society they are the standards by which people define what is desirable or undesirable, good or bad beautiful or ugly . There re what we expect in our society from our behavior at school, in public, or school. Each place has a certain norm we as a society should know when and how to follow. As a guest at someone s house, whether it s at a families, friends, or strangers the norm has always been the same. We have to show respect to the owners and their property, be polite, and show good manners while there. So for my own personal norm violation I decided to break the guest at someone s house norm. This was taken place at one of my mother s close friends house who had invited us over for dinner an afternoon, I had been thinking for a while on what norm to break and how. None of my family knew what I had plan to do that afternoon, so it was going to surprise them also. As a Mexican family my parents raised my siblings and I to always show respect towards ... • 6. The Importance Of Refugees In Australia Asylum seekers or refugees have fled their countries due to volatile circumstances such as war, or fear of prosecution. Upon arrival in Australia they are moved to detention centres. Detention centres hold people who have come without a visa, any non national and all unauthorised boat arrivals (Australian Human Rights Commission, 2014). These centres hold refugees for indefinite periods and in poor conditions. They are used as a spectacle to represent illegality and a threat to Australian society (Marfleet, 2007, p672). The spectacle of detention centres does not only lie within public perception but also within the architecture of the facility (Grinceri, 2016, p170 171). The barbed wired fence of detention centres is an example. It allows the spectators (citizens) to witness the enclosure of refugees while simultaneously binding refugees within its constraints, punishingly (Pugilese, 2008, p206 207). The visibility provided by the wired fence enables photography and videoing, thus acting as a spectacle. This spectacle is related to the ideals of torture. They are tortured and punished based on exclusions and exception. The refugees held in detention centres form the exception. They are the Other which no one wishes to become and are a danger to society. Those tortured are viewed as deserving because they are seen as a threat. The power to make decisions about who can and cannot enter Australia lies within the (Government) Sovereignty (Georgatos, 2017). The sovereign ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Manmohan Singh In June of 1991, India was four weeks away from defaulting on its external balance of payment obligations. India had $600 million in federal reserves, barely enough to pay for three weeks of essential imports. It was during this time that the former Prime Minister of India N. Rao elected Manmohan Singh as the Finance Minister. With the coming of Manmohan Singh came many economic reforms. These reforms helped pull India from massive debt and near collapse. This leads many to the question, How did the economic policies of Manmohan Singh help India emerge from the 1991 economic crisis? Right before the Prime Minister Rao took office; the former Prime Minister had sought out an emergency loan of $2.2 billion from the International Monetary ... Reliance Industries Limited, based in Mumbai, also offered, internet service, among other things. Based in Mumbai, they had to be very exact on how to retain the remaining customers that had flocked to Quest. By lowering prices and establishing a strong consumer fan base, they were able to overtake Quest within India within ten years. The opening of the economy led to a more freedom, helping to raise the self image of Indian economy. Manmohan Singh made another choice that helped push the entire economy out of the ditch that it was trapped in. He made the choice to deregulate and privatize underperforming businesses, helping to increase GDP, as well as relieve internal government debt. Before the 1991 crisis, one could not own a business without explicit permission form the government s financial department, or if you completed a rigorous paperwork completion course called License Raj that took months, in some cases a whole year to complete. When the crisis hit, India s debt stood at 68.05% of the GDP. To remove this debt, Manmohan Singh removed the License Raj, replacing it with more simplistic paperwork to obtain a business license. The Corporate Strategy Of Nintendo Nintendo, when it was created, it became one of the most important video game companies in the world but, little by little it lost importance after the competition boom. The growing use of smartphones and tablets for gaming threatens the market for consoles specifically meant for gaming. The convenience and utility of having one product, like a smartphone or tablet, rather than multiple devices for different uses gives the smartphone an advantage. It also may have been the combo of tiredness and the chill (Tugwell 56). Doctors were called for a diagnosis and each time they gave a wrong diagnosis. It wasn t until two weeks after contracting the disease that a specialist gave a correct diagnosis and it was two weeks after the specialist came that Franklin was transported to New York for therapy (57). • 10. Expo Macbeth: Easy Questions, Difficult Answers DERICK MARSH Macbeth is not an obscure play. The course of the action, unlike that of Hamlet, can easily be summarized. Most readers and audiences can come to some general agreement on what the play is about, provided that they can offer answers to the two major questions of understanding that the play poses. These answers, it need hardly be said, cannot be precise and absolute, since Shakespeare s plays, like life, never allow us the delusion of perfect understanding. Nevertheless, we do need to decide what we are invited to think and feel about Macbeth and what he does. In particular, we have to consider why he acts as he does; why, in the first place, he kills Duncan, and then why, acting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lady Macbeth s reaction is the more obvious of the two: in her famous unsex me here speech she tries deliberately to suppress her own humanity, transposing the horror of the deed into images of a terrible resolution, so that she will be able to do something that she knows is vile. Of course she cannot wholly succeed. The sleeping King reminds her of her father; the blood that is spilt returns to haunt her and drive her to distraction. Thomas Paine s Influence On The American Revolution Thomas Paine (1736 1809) was an English American writer and political theorist, whose work, especially the Common Sense, has greatly influence the America Revolution in the eighteenth century. The practice of hereditary succession would brought a series of problems, such as corruption and war. Besides, Paine made arguments further by analyzing the current situation of America. • 12. Signs of Nihilism in Tyler from Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk In the society, man individuals are troubled by the social rules. Indeed, some of them develop measures to escape the rules, which govern personal conduct. Nihilism acknowledges that all human values are baseless, and it is impossible to know anything with certainty (Wilshire 4). It is a belief that people adopt to reach total anarchism. Wilshire (5) contends that people with anarchistic values are troubled, and they may require psychological assistance. In Chuck Palahniuk s novel Fight club, Tyler embodies these qualities. This paper will shows that Tyler is a nihilist, since he does not believe in any human values, and he is not loyal to anyone. Tyler is a nihilist because he does not believe in the value of friendship or loyalty. Tyler s main drive is to destroy the narrator s life. Tyler has not emotional connection to people, and he also has no regrets. He, eventually, forces this philosophy onto the narrator and thereby transforms him into Tyler Durden. In the first chapters of the novel, it is difficult to distinguish the narrator and Tyler because of the effect that Tyler had on the narrator s personality. Tyler emphasizes this point when he says, I used to be a nice person (Palahniuk 98). Eventually, Tyler destroys the narrator s humanity and pulls him from the senses that control societal actions. Most claims that deniers of the evolution manage to come up with are effortlessly refuted with the help of logic and common sense. Even if their objections are flimsy, the sheer number and diversity of the claims challenging the ideas of evolution can put even well informed people at a disadvantage. One of the strongest arguments providing grounds for doubting evolution is so called irreducible complexity which says that living things have tremendously complex features at the anatomical, cellular and molecular levels that could not function if they were any less intricate or sophisticated. This argument may be considered quite strong because even Charles Darwin wrote in chapter 6 of his famous work On the Origin of Species : If it could be dеmonstrated that any complex organ existed, which could not possibly have been formed by numerous, successive, slight modifications, my theory would absolutely break down. • 17. Similarities Between Lord Of The Flies And The Hunger Games District 12. Where you can starve to death in safety (6). This is a quote from the book The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins, and it is a prime example of the dystopian society the book is set in. Another book set in a dystopian society is Lord of the Flies, by William Golding. The Hunger Games is a book about a society where every year, 24 people are sent to fight to the death in the Hunger Games. Lord of the Flies is about a big group of young children getting trapped on an island and having to figure out how to survive on their own without any adults. Both the novel Lord of The Flies and the book The Hunger Games present societies that are vicious and cruel, in similar settings, even though there are some differences between the two stories. One similarity between both books is the use of fire. At the beginning of Lord of the Flies fire is used to try to give a signal to passing ships that there are children trapped on the island. If a ship comes near the island they may not be able to notice us. So we must make smoke on top of the mountain. We must make a fire (33). At the beginning of The Hunger Games fire is used to gain the Capitol s attention during the ceremony where all tributes ride on chariots. I want the audience to recognize you when you re in the arena, says Cinna dreamily. Katniss, the girl who was on fire (67). In both situations, fire is used to gain attention of people who will be able to help them in the future, whether it s giving them a gift during the Games, or rescuing them. However, later on in the stories fire is used differently. At the end of Lord of the Flies, Jack s group uses fire to try to burn down the forest in order to find and kill Ralph. The fire was a big one and the drum roll that he had thought had left so far behind was nearer (182). This quote is from a part when Ralph is hiding in the currently burning down forest, trying to escape from Jack. In The Hunger Games, fire is used to burn down part of the arena for the Games, in order to bring Katniss closer to the other tributes. This fire is designed to flush us out, to drive us together (173). One difference between the two books is the idea of unique appearances. In Lord of the Flies, there is the ... The Importance Of Use Notwithstanding its prominence in the literature, a major shortcoming of the TAM method is its utilitarian focus on cognition and intentionality, rather than affect and emotions. While this may be useful for explaining SNS account creation, it is insufficient for explaining continuous SNS use and engagement. Furthermore, the framework assumes that all users have the same preferences for the same technical factors, such as usability. This view completely neglects that users may adapt SNSs for their own idiosyncratic purposes that may defy the original intentions of designers. This represents a burgeoning literature on the effects of Facebook use, but we oftentimes forget to ask, why we are studying Facebook in the first place despite the wealth of alternative platforms. Single platform often studies run the risk of potentially omitting important distinctions between different SNSs in terms of their social affordances, audiences and uses. Furthermore, focusing on one particular SNS paints only a partial picture of how people use and are affected by social media (Kim 2014, p.2). This may limit the generalisability of studies due implicit biases towards particular user groups, usage patterns, platform policies and social affordances. Examining a social media platform in isolation, as opposed to being part of a larger social media environment, may thus inadvertently inhibit the reliability, generalisability and interpretation of results. Kolya begins this novel as an unlikable and unpleasant character but gradually redeems himself by displaying more admirable traits. Throughout this intriguing novel, despite his arrogance and frequent reckless behavior, Kolya has proven to be a very likeable and sympathetic character. And i don t think you re a coward. Anyone with a spoonful of sanity would have run. (Benioff 65). This is a perfect example of Kolya giving Lev encouragement and sympathizing with the fact that Lev felt bad for leaving Kolya in the apartment to fight the Giant alone. I find it thoughtful that Kolya didn t want Lev to feel down or bad about himself so he proceeded to tell Lev that anyone with common sense would have ran and even though he fled, it doesn t reflect on his strength and bravery. While this is just one example of Kolyas compassion, his sympathy is shown in more ways than just one. He opened his eyes, his pale blue cossack eyes, and smiles at me. We both knew he was going to die. He trembled lying on the back seat beneath his great coat, his teeth very white against his blue lips. I have always believed that smile was a gift for me. Instead of discussing the texts based on random details that we find in the text, we discussed what the text meant to the overall story, or better yet, what the evidence said about the culture of the story and human nature. I learned a great deal about the diverse meanings of human life, and I learned about various cultures and pieces of their history. Because of his discovery, Jenner contributed to the overall annihilation of the disease in 1979 after the vaccine was implemented in different medicines throughout the world (source). Following Jenner, many others produced vaccines to help reduce the fatalities of common diseases such as measles, polio, and rubella, which were once responsible for millions of deaths every year. Now, there is almost no risk of catching these fatal illnesses. Even after vaccines were made popular, there have always been parents who have been concerned about immunizing their children. It has become such an issue that there has been some debate on whether or not the government should get involved and require vaccination by law. As with every issue, there are two sides who stand firmly with their beliefs. Parents who do not vaccinate claim that they have the right to decide what is best for their kid s health, and for some, it interferes with their religion. A pH of below 7.35 is considered acidic and a pH of above 7.45 is considered alkaline or basic. Body acids exist in two forms; volatile and nonvolatile acids. Volatile acids can be eliminated as CO2, usually known as carbonic acid, which is a weak acid. Nonvolatile acids can be eliminated by the kidneys, example are sulfuric and phosphoric. These acids are strong compared to volatile acids. The kidneys reabsorb bicarbonate or regenerate bicarbonate from carbon dioxide and water. • 24. Persuasive Essay On Bo Jackson Excellence One quote a person says can change the rest of one s life. More specifically, Bo Jackson, famous National Football League running back and Major League Baseball player has had his fair share of both success and well spoken quotes. Jackson had the ability to be a hall of famer in both of the sports, as he was one of the hardest workers to play the game and refused to be satisfied with anything less than superp. Bo Jackson s once said, Set your goals high and don t stop till you get there, contained some of the most inspirational words to flow out of a person s mouth. This quote demands the people to set their goals high, work relentlessly until their goal is achieved, and to be ambitious. Arguably, setting your goals high is what Bo Jackson was trying to say in his quote, and ultimately achieve greatness. Setting your goals high is so important, and there are so many reasons on why to do this. Primarily, setting high goals leads to the possibility for a greater return. This is because even if one works as hard as possible and miss the ultimate goal it is very possible that he will have had more success than if one only aimed for an easy tasks. Setting your goals high segues into the second reason, which is that it will generate more momentum to work. For example if one is to complete a small project in a week they might procrastinate until Rhinesmith 2 the last moment, naturally putting in less effort. However if someone is to be given a difficult tasks they will naturally work much harder to complete said task. When goals are set higher they will be placed at a higher standard if they receive greater effort, giving the goal purpose. When one realizes that the goal they are set to achieve has purpose, completing it will seem necessary. Working hard plays an extremely important role when attempting to achieve a goal. Hard work is demonstrated in the part of the quote where Jackson says, ...don t stop till you get there.. The education was short lived when he started work rolling cigars at ten years old. In 1863 he and his family moved to a poor area in new york city, where Gompers took up cigar making once more. From a very young age, Gompers was drawn to the work of small unions for cigar makers. At just 16 he often spoke out toward employers about unfair treatment and quickly rose to the top of union 15. Gompers found it hard to compete with with workers who got paid a fee for every cigar they made, there was also competition with machines that could replace workers. Gompers was influenced by the passion of the workers around him, despite many unsuccessful strikes. In 1875 Gompers and his friend Adolph Strasser founded the Cigar Makers International Union (CIU). • 29. Combustion Of Fireworks Chemistry Don t trust atoms, they make up everything. This is true for the reaction witnessed in the combustion of fireworks. These pretty colours and lights are the result of a chemical reaction occurring, that ignites the firework and turns into a colourful flame. This phenomenon can be tested inside a laboratory using similar circumstances to that of a firework in the air. The test involves using chemicals, similar to what is seen in fireworks and burning those chemicals under a blue flame, which burns at 1500C. The purpose of this experiment was to observe the characteristic flame colours produced by the metal salts burned under a blue flame. In chemistry, a salt is an ionic compound that can be formed by the neutralization reaction of an acid and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Because these levels are unstable, the electrons incline to fall down to the levels where they were before, releasing energy as they do so. This energy is released as light energy, and as the amount of energy released varies from other metal ions, it leads to the characteristic colours given by each metal ion. Metal salts are used to the produce the colour seen; a fuel is needed to allow the ion to burn; a chemical which provides oxygen for the combustion of the fuel; and a chlorine/ binding chemical to help strengthen; and hold the mixture together. For example, if Sodium is placed into a flame, the sodium ions, collect all the energy given from the flame, and then is exerted out when the ions start to die. A sodium atom in an unexcited state has the structure 3s1, but when placed in the flame the sodium will give an orange ting to the flame which results in the ions jumping into the next levels and then eventually falling back from the 3p1 level to their normal 3s1 level. While it is unknown who actually invented our found out the flame test, it can all be traced back to Michael Faraday (Born 22nd September 1791 Died 25th August ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 30. Safe Schools Oral Paragraphs Safe Schools Oral Sample Paragraphs I want you to imagine being 12 years old. You came to school one day and saw your name scrawled all over the school toilet doors, accompanied by the terms faggot, gay and disgusting . I want you now to stand in the shoes of Jake, an 11 year old transgender boy. You are currently being racially slurred, beaten up and spat on by your mates , who discovered you were a tranny. I want you to stand on Ben s point of view. And think, what if your coach kicked you out of your football team simply because you weren t masculine enough for the sport? Finally, I want you to become Jane, a 13 year old born transgender and because of this you are bullied every single day, from the moment you walk into the school gates, everybody stares, like you are some sort of alien. Jane Marie Georgia a bright, cheery 7th grader, who just like you and me had a loving family and a favourite icecream flavour, committed suicide on Thursday the 25th of May 2017, a day that couldn t be more ordinary for each and every one of us sitting here. But for LGBTI students, every single day is filled to the brim with inequality and danger. Ladies and Gentlemen, over a tenth of our society is made up of the LGBTI ( the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex) community. In 2010, the Safe Schools Coalition Australia was founded, this establishment brought hope and protection to hundreds upon thousands of students experiencing bullying. However, being the nation we are, extreme right wing bigots are attempting to withdraw this life saving initiative from nationwide primary and secondary schools. I ask you, how is the sexuality of LGBTI children any different to our diversity in hair colour ? (is this a good example)? In Australia, we are proud of our individuality and celebrate our differences. So, why is something so valuable, so integral to our society used an excuse for the discrimination and degradation of others? Why is it that right wing bigots and conservative MP s are starving vulnerable children of protection and safety? Our opposition complains relentlessly about how the safe schools approach is controversial and ideological, accusing the initiative of promoting a radical view of gender ... • 31. Plato In The Republic And Niccolo Machiavelli s The Prince Plato and Machiavelli seek to examine necessary qualities leaders should possess to rule successfully. Plato s examination of leaders can be considered deontologist (wherein morality determines decision making) and idealistic whereas Machiavelli s examination is consequentialist (weighing potential consequences determines decision making) and realistic. Using primary evidence from Plato s The Republic and Niccolò Machiavelli s The Prince as well as an examination of controversial leaders like Donald Trump, I will argue that Machiavelli s ruler traits to a state are superior to Plato s since they are more realistic of human nature of political actors. PLATO S LIVED WORLD: SETTING CONTEXT Plato lived in Ancient Athens through the Peloponnesian War and a tyrannical government. After The Thirty Tyrants, Athens established a quasi direct democratic government and invoked a lottery system to distribute power amongst the citizenry. For Wallach, Plato s polis was was not a world inflected by [...], totalitarian regimes, [...] political orders whose populations top one billion human beings, vast inequalities of wealth, [or] nuclear tipped drones. Ancient Athens was a polis of trade, tourism and culture but it did not have the frequency/severity of modern foreign policy issues that affected its decisions. This is crucial to Plato s views on leadership and it justifies the temporal limitations of his theory. A DISCUSSION OF PLATO S PHILOSOPHICAL SOUL Plato s The Republic establishes ... Essay on How Technology is Represented in Star Wars How Technology is Represented in Star Wars When watching the film, Star Wars, it is impossible not to be aware of the technology that is represented in the film, partly because it is so much more advanced than our own is now, but also because we can imagine how we might someday acquire such technology. The central theme in Star Wars is good versus evil, clearly demonstrated by the technology in the film. While the Rebels (the good guys) use technology primarily to fight for freedom and quality of life for all, the Empire (the bad guys) use technology to develop weapons of destruction and war in an attempt to rule the galaxy. In addition to these two opposing sides, there is another group that doesn t use technology for war. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, even if we don t look into the future, Star Wars can tell us volumes about how technology can affect our society, especially as it pertains to war. Through the ages there have been constant struggles to resolve disputes. However, as we can see through our history, sometimes peaceful resolutions are not possible because of misunderstandings, corruption, power, or greed. In these cases, one alternative to settling the dispute is war. Technology plays an extremely important role in war, and this is clearly demonstrated in Star Wars. Star Wars possesses similarities to our own culture and with the vast amounts of technology represented in the film, it is an ideal choice to better understand our own society. We are delighted to have the opportunity to examine Star Wars because we feel intimately connected to the film and all that it represents. We grew up with R2D2, C3PO, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, and Chewbacca. We dressed up like them for Halloween, we played Star Wars games for countless hours, we imagined ourselves using their futuristic technology, and now we want to study how this artifact has affected our society and how it might affect our future. Research Question: In the movie, Star Wars, how is technology represented differently in its ability to help humankind and/or destroy it? Methods: We decided to conduct our analysis on the ... Explain each phase in SDLC with an example. ANALYSIS: DESIGN: DEVELOPMENT: IMPLEMENTATION: EVALUATION: System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) The Systems development life cycle (SDLC) is a conceptual model that is used in the project management which describes the stages involved in the information system development project, from an initial feasibility study through maintenance of the completed application. SDLC is used to correct problems in existing system, and to improve the system quality and structure. It certainly makes the process easy for building a system and helps to reduce failures such as unclear objectives, possibility of not meeting the user needs, or cost overruns. We can generally consider the SDLC in five phases. These 5 phases are repeated until the desired or efficient output is achieved. The 5 phases of system development life cycle are: 1. Planning 2. Analysis 3. Design 4. Implementation 5. Maintenance 1. Planning: This phase begins when the project is defined and the appropriate resources have been selected. The first part of the planning phase involves collecting, defining and validating functional, support and training requirements. The second part involves developing initial life cycle management plans, including project planning, project management, Configuration Management, support, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 35. Engine Of Evolution Chapter Summaries Chapter 1 What Is Evolution? In chapter one of the selected text given it goes over six main components being: evolution, gradualism, speciation, common ancestry, natural selection, and nonselective mechanisms of evolutionary change. These six components are broken down from the larger idea that life began with one species and eventually broke off and evolved into many new and different branches of species. Even in reading this, I do not believe that we all came from one species. I feel that evolution is true to an extent that while species do evolve over time (which is the concept of gradualism) we did not all evolve from one parasitic creature. To start simply the first component evolution in itself to me means that overtime a creature ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The main lesson of biogeography is that only evolution can explain the diversity of life on continents and islands. (Coyne 109).In convergent evolution 3 of the six components discussed in chapter 1 are working together. These 3 components are common ancestry, speciation, and natural selection. If evolution did exist, ancestors of species today that lived in the same place, when dug up, should be fossils that resemble organisms today. Chapter 5 The Engine of Evolution In this chapter of the selected text for the course they talk of the three things involved in adaptation. First and foremost, there has to be variation in the population, second, the variation has to come from genes changes, and the third is that the genetic variation must affect the probability of offspring. Evolution by selection is a combination of randomness and lawfulness. (Coyne 118). I also learned that the only difference between natural selection and artificial selection is that on one hand the changes occurring are being made to happen by a breeder (artificial) whereas the other is random selection due to environmental and survival changes ... The street was a noisy filthy street where prostitutes and drug dealer was visible at the pavements.
