Answers on Operational Objectives
Question 1 1a. The primary strategic objective as outlined in the Directive for Commander–in–Chief
Allied Expeditionary Force is to cut off the Axis supplies to Africa by means of the Mediterranean
ports. The ports currently under Axis control include Algiers, Oran, Tunis, Bone, Philippville and
Casablanca. These ports are currently held by French troops, who although under Axis control are
considered friendly to the Allies. The secondary strategic objective as outlined in the Directive for
Commander–in–Chief Allied Expeditionary Force is to put an end to the Gazala Gallop enabling
Allied troops to enter Europe through Africa. This secondary strategic goal can only happen once
the Axis supplies are cut off through the ports preventing yet another advance by the Axis African
troops. 1b. The planners outlined a four day direct assault and a 25 day follow–up assault to take the
ports. These operational objectives involve army, navy and air support, each will be outlined below.
Army: The army will be in charge of all initial ground assaults. On the first day there will be
simultaneous attacks of Algiers, Oran, Bone and Philippville. Algiers and Oran will be attacked with
full American troops. Bone and Philippville will be attacked by primarily British forces with some
backup coming from American forces. On the following days, the remaining ports of Tunis and
Casablanca will be taken. Remaining troops will guard the ports and ensure Ally control. Navy: The

Louisiana Purchase Thomas Jefferson's Dilemma
President Thomas Jefferson had a dilemma. His country The United States was no longer allowed to
use the waterway that kept his growing nation alive. He knew the danger of not having access to the
waterport; so he made his controversial decision of the "Louisiana Purchase." This decision had a
lasting effect on The United States. Thomas Jefferson's decision on the "Louisiana Purchase" had a
positive impact on history.
Before the "Louisiana Purchase" the territory was owned by Spain. The territory included the
Mississippi River which gave Spain control over trade and ships. For a while Spain allowed The
United States to use the Mississippi River to ship their goods. Although in 1798 the treaty that
allowed the U.S to use the river was revoked. Spain had become more protective over the port since

This put President Jefferson on edge because many of the people were worried. Slavery was still
allowed in the U.S but was outlawed in France. The people feared that Napoleon would free all the
slaves in the Louisiana territory, which could influence other slaves in the U.S to rebel. His people
felt helpless and Jefferson knew that he had to do something to console them. Jefferson felt the best
thing to do would be to try to purchase New Orleans from Napoleon. He was hesitant at first to
make the offer with Napoleon because he didn't want to break the law by doing something he didn't
have the power to do. He was reassured by Article 1, Section 8, and Clause 18 of the U.S
Constitution which states " The Congress shall have power –– To make all laws necessary and
proper for carrying into execution the foregoing powers, and all other powers vested by the
Constitution in the government of the United States, or in any department or officer thereof." This
gave him the freedom to make independent decisions when he felt necessary. This helped finalize
his decision on offering to buy New Orleans from

The Louisiana Purchase
Introduction
More than two centuries ago, in 1803, the United States undertook a transaction that increased its
territory by almost double. The event took place within a short notice, without engaging in war and
with the briefest negotiations. Hailed as the most significant achievement of the Thomas Jefferson
administration, the purchase of Louisiana expanded the US territory by about eight hundred and
twenty–eight million square miles. Thomas Jefferson, the president at the time, purchased Louisiana
for approximately four cents an acre. The territory stretched from the Rocky Mountains in the west
to the Mississippi river in the east and from the Canadian borders in the north to the Mexican gulf in
the south.
The transaction to purchase Louisiana took place at a time when France, Spain, and Britain, were
among the world powers of the time. In addition, they all had a stake in the US territory and
specifically the crucial Mississippi river. The discussion in this paper will analyse the circumstances
surrounding the purchase of Louisiana. It will also discuss the conditions that led America to
purchase the Louisiana territory from the French in 1803. The discussion will then move to assess
the effect of the Louisiana Purchase on the future development of the USA, as well as the
international balance of power. The paper will also explore the political, economic, and social

History Of The Louisiana Purchase
Louisiana Purchase: America's Single Largest Land Deal
The Louisiana Purchase was by far the single largest land deal in the United States, occupying the
western half of the Mississippi River basin. Purchased from France in 1803 at less than three cents
per acre for 828,000 square miles, it was the greatest land bargain in American history (Blumberg,
100). By doubling the size of the United States, the Louisiana Territory allowed the country to
strengthen itself, materially and strategically, granting access to the Mississippi River and the Gulf
of Mexico for trading (Harriss). Although the purchase had a great influence on American history as
a whole, Americans and Louisianans must be aware of the impact the Louisiana Purchase had on
Louisiana history, hence the name.
Tracing back to the origin of the Louisiana Purchase lies a rich and indispensable story. After the
Seven Years War, Spain gained control of New Orleans, although many immigrants and Americans
were settling in the territory. Driven to negotiate with the United States in fear of an imminent
alliance between the United States and Britain, Spain had to ensure peace with the United States. In
1795, the Treaty of San Lorenzo, also known as Pinckney's Treaty with Spain, allowed American
merchants "right of deposit" in New Orleans, in other words, allowing duty–free transport through
the port of New Orleans (Wagner). In addition to duty–free transport, Pinckney's Treaty also gave
Americans the right to travel

Similarities And Differences Between The Spanish American...
Several nations, most notably Spain, France, and Great Britain, attempted to colonize North
America after the Americas were discovered. Some of these colonies became successful and was
very beneficial to their nations, bringing in raw materials and new crops. However, this also led to
some conflicts between the Native Americans and the Europeans. Even though these European
colonies developed in different areas in North America, there were some political, social, and
economic similarities, such as the French and Spanish governments, main religion in New France
and New Spain, and the basis of the economy, and some differences, such as the views on the
Indians, the New England government, and the focus on what was traded. All of these colonies ...

The majority of the population in each of the colonies was Christian, but New France and New
Spain had mainly Catholics while New England was mainly Protestant. This disparity was due to the
reasons the people decided to move to the colonies. Protestants moved to New England to move
away from the Church of England since they believed that the English Reformation didn't change
enough things in the church. However, the Catholics from New Spain and New France wanted to
either convert the Native Americans into Christians or establish some Christian influence in North
America. In addition, they had very different views on what the Native Americans were and how to
treat them. In New Spain, they saw them strictly as savages that were either supposed to be saved by
converting them into Christians or killed and conquered. In New England, their view of them was
originally positive because they were given assistance to survive on the colonies, but they did
become enemies due to their greed. In New France, their view was very positive as they tried to
make an alliance with the natives due to the Indians' involvement in the fur trade. All of these
varying views were a result of their differing goals in which they became friends or enemies
depending on the positives of having that relationship, such as New France's

Panama History
The history of Panama has been largely influenced by the strategic position of this narrow isthmus
that links North America with South America and separates the Pacific Ocean from the Atlantic
Ocean. The Cunas, Chocos, and Guaymas were some of the indigenous tribes that have occupied the
region. Although these civilizations were not as advanced as the Maya or Inca, they may have been
influenced by them. The explorer Rodrigo de Bastidas disembarked on the territory in 1501 and, the
following year, Cristóbal Columbus reclaimed Panama in the name of Spain.
Due to its unique geographical position, Panama has an abundant historical heritage. For hundreds

The city of Panama continued to thrive as a colonial port until it became the favorite target of
European pirates. In 1668, an English pirate, Lord Henry Morgan invaded the port of Portobelo in
search of riches. He besieged the port for a ransom of a hundred thousand gold coins, but this was
but a distraction. His real plan was to plunder the old city of Panama. Once conquered, it burned the
city. Other pirate attacks resulted in the port being no longer used as a strategic point in the transport
of wealth to Europe. After the destruction of the old city, the present one was founded and life
continued in Panama. Later, Panama joined as a nation and in 1821 decided to separate from Spain
to join the Greater Colombia.
The Independence of Panama and the Construction of the Canal. From the era of the Spanish

The Country Of Trinidad And Tobago
The island country of Trinidad and Tobago became an independent country in 1962, and became a
republic country in 1976. The country is comprised of two main islands, Trinidad being the larger of
the two and Tobago being the smaller. The majority race is East Indian and African, with English as
its dominating language as well as it is their national language. This small country houses a
population of over 1,370,000 people, with their growth rate being in the negative numbers at –3.2.
The people of Trinidad and Tobago follow numerous religions such as Hinduism and Muslim, but
the main one the natives follow are either Protestantism or Roman Catholicism. The natives are
under a Parliamentary Democracy type government system meaning that their leader will become
Prime Minister or Chancellor. The average age is 35.5 years with a life expectancy of 73 years. The
male to female age ratio is fairly similar with the males' age at 35 years and the female at 36 years.
The birthrate outweighs the death rate with the birthrate being 13.1/1000 and the death rate being
8.7/1000. One of Trinidad and Tobago's main and largest cities is their capital Port of Spain. While
Trinidad and Tobago are known for one of the biggest celebrations in the world, Carnival, issues

These facilities are located either in Port of Spain, San Fernando and the West Mooring area, they
are sufficient enough to treat most health problems but offer only a slightly better treatment than that

Cause And Effects Of The Age Of Exploration
The Age of Exploration, or sometimes known as the Age of discovery, began in the 1400s and
continued throughout the 1700s. These expeditions took a great deal of man power, money, and
technology. Many ships were only able to cover about one hundred miles a day, making the duration
of these voyages long, taking years to complete. During this period Europeans began to explore
various parts of the world via sea. Most of the men did not join these voyages willingly, they were
forced into service and worked around the clock minding the ships they were on. The typical diet of
a sailor consisted of wine or hard liquor, pork or beef which sometimes they used fat to mix with

methods as to how they would tackle each voyage. The Chinese had a lot of power in the ocean,
they gained this power because piracy was sponsored so heavily. Chinese were led by enlightened

resolve their conflicts over newly discovered lands and goods. The Chinese became mongols in
trade so much so that their foreign trade became a state monopoly. Although they were successful in
trade and known for being so powerful these voyages had consequences. China ended up with a
large expense for going into the Indian ocean. Their expenses came from having about 28,000
soldiers to tend to and feed in order their ships be manned. Even though China monopolized trading

Abstract
The Louisiana Purchase was the largest land deal in our history. It doubled the size of the United
States and gave us a strong face as an economic power. It brought immigrants from all over the
world for the idea of owning land and making a living for themselves. We also had a second
expansion with the Adams–Onis treaty in 1819 (Davidson, 2002, p.p. 246–247) where we clearly
defined the United States and Spanish board to the Pacific and obtained the Florida territory. This
gave the United State a firm foothold and clearly defined boarders for the first time in our history.

This would have put and extreme economic strain on the import and export of goods from the
United States especially on behalf of the southern states which counted on the Mississippi River for
transportation of goods.
Napoleon Bonaparte was expecting to use his foothold in the United States in conjunction with the
territory of Hispaniola as an expansion of the French Empire. He lost the island of Haiti during a
slave revolt which stopped his plans to expand. Without the supplies and port of Haiti the Louisiana
Territory was useless to him. He was also still involved in war with England and needed additional
finances for that battle. In order to obtain additional funds for his war he made the decision to sell
the Louisiana Territory to the United States.
Thomas Jefferson was the President at the time and knew the implications of not having the rights to
ship through the Mississippi and the port of New Orleans. Prior to Bonaparte sending his minister to
the United States Jefferson had already sent Robert Livingston to offer to purchase the New Orleans
at a minimum. Bonaparte not only offered New Orleans but the entire Louisiana Territory. The treat
and sale to the United States was finalized in April of 1803 for approximately $15 million dollars.
This is recognized as the largest land purchase in United States history. It is also a major
accomplishment as it was completed without the loss of life through a war.

Louisiana Purchase happened between France and United States back in 1803. The Louisiana
Purchase was a negotiation for land that covered America; Mississippi and the Rocky Mountains,
that was owned by the French. As a result of growth in America using the Mississippi river
westwards was halted due to the French controlling the ports. President Thomas had predicted this
turn of events and France intention a year before 1803; his prediction foresaw Spain handing over
Louisiana to the Napoleonic France (Lewis, 2003). It was prediction that Spain would return the
land to France who initially owned the land, after they rejected a treaty with the United States.
United States was no longer able to use the ports in New Orleans after the French–Spanish treaty.

Foreign Minister Charles Talleyrand offered to sell the whole territory at $15 million dollars. The
reason behind the sale was because the finance minister did not think the land was of any value to
France, unlike other places they had acquired. Also, the French army was attacked by yellow fever
as they were going to attack Saint Dominique making them weak. Another reason would be an
inevitable war arising between France and British. With these facts at hand, the finance minister
convinced Napoleon to the selling of the territory to the United States who were desperate for it.

American War 1650-1850 Causes
The major motive for wars between 1650 and 1850 were due to trade, for expansion and protection
of trade. The wars mostly took place, because of the claiming of wealth and vast land areas of the
Americas. Nations were fighting each other to claim ownership and to fight for independence
because of the heavy tax burdens that was being placed on them. The English and Dutch fought
several wars over Dutch access to English ports and wars over trade between England and Spain. In
the late seventeenth century, the British began to challenge the Dutch and the Portuguese that was
for control of the trade with Indonesia. The wars began over territory in Europe and were extended
to America in one direction and to Asia in the other. Mercantilism was what inspired these imperial
wars. "Mercantilism believed that the wealth of a state ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Result with British acquisition of Jamaica. Once, when Britain tried to smuggle more goods that it

Jenkins' ear in 1739. In 1762, another war against Spain and France, in which Britain and North
Americans seized Havana, Cuba, but then, returned it to Spain in exchange for Florida. The west
acquired a large share of the world's resources, and it dominated the world's carrying trade. Western
states were the ones to gain control of the world economy, in addition, the slave trade was an
important part of this economy, and it was one of the main sources of western wealth. When it came
to the slave trade, it was a key component to the economy, because it provided the labor for

They both also became prime examples for the organization of territories later acquired west of the

On the other hand, foreign relations with Britain were strained. After the Articles of Confederation
were established, Britain put stricter restrictions on United States commerce. United States
foodstuffs, lumber, and tobacco were all welcomed in Britain, but only if it arrived in British ships.
The United States ships lost all privileges to trade their merchandise to the West Indies and were
forced to pay high custom fees for landing their cargo in Britain. As a result of one–half of United
States exports going to Great Britain or the West Indian Colonies, British shippers were able to
increase their share of Atlantic trade at American expense. This trade loss was especially difficult
causing a depression.
Foreign relations with Spain were not at it’s best either. Secretary of foreign affairs,
John Jay, was sent to Spain to devise a treaty to benefit both Spain and the United States. The United
States would give up their New Orleans port in exchange for the Western lands of Kentucky and
Tennessee. However, the treaty was rejected by Congress, enraged the Westerners and Southerners,
and still resulted in the loss of the New Orleans port for twenty years.

The Impact of Pirates and of Piracy on the Spanish Empire
When the word pirate is mentioned, many people think of ship carrying men across the seas as they
pillage other ships. While this is true to some extent there was much more to the lives of the men
that were known as pirates. Pirates were mostly men from French, English or Dutch heritage, and
were privateers or merchants. Many of these men were sanctioned by their government. By the
Spanish they were call piratas or unsanctioned sea–raiders, and would have a heavy influence of
trade in the Caribbean and on the Spanish Empire.
The first pirates were known as corsairs and appeared at the end of the 15th and into the beginning

In an attempt to help protect the colonies and the people that lived there Onerous "pirate taxes" were
created (Lane 18). This money allowed the Spanish to provide minimal protection for these
colonies. Still the cost for fortification, standing armies and a navy could not be justified.
Between the years of 1535 and 1547, some sixty–six Spanish ships were captured by French corsairs
(Lane 19). Shortly after in the 1550's, the Spanish came to regret their passive defense strategy when
French corsairs made their most punishing raids ever on the Spanish West Indies. They descended
on colonies like Puerto Rico, Hispaniola and Cuba, and caused heavy destruction that they never
really recovered from. Finally in the early 1560's, Spain was forced to react with expensive long–
term defenses. Since the Spanish waited so long to do so they not only lost wealth because of what
was captured, but now they also had to spend money to protect what was left.
Moreover, French corsairs turned to contraband trading. They would go into small remote Spanish
ports and sell to the settlers slaves, cloth and other goods that they had taken from Spanish ships.
The French were not only taking goods from the Spanish ships, they were making a profit by selling
it back to the Spanish. This would mark the end of the French pirates interfering with Spanish trade
for the time being (Lane 29).

Introduction. Plaza, The Logistics Park Of Zaragoza. Plaza
Introduction
Plaza, the logistics park of Zaragoza
Plaza is a brand–new logistics park located in the outskirts of Zaragoza, Spain (Watson &
Kraiselburd, 2009, p. 1). Plaza was opened for business on October 10, 2005, with a total surface
area of 12,826,898 m2 (Watson & Kraiselburd, 2009, p. 1). For instance, the company granted the
area to different business participants and connected with the international organizations for the
supportive ideas to grow in the future (Watson & Kraiselburd, 2009, p.1). In addition, the logistics
parks were part of a larger development effort that included not only an industrial park, but also
malls and living spaces (Watson & Kraiselburd, 2009, p.1).

The city of Zaragoza offered facilities that gave the possibility of using different modes of
transportation (Watson & Kraiselburd, 2009, p.3). For example, the connecting regional
infrastructure which included a modern highway system connecting to Madrid, Catalonia, Valencia
and the Basque country, high–speed and regular cargo train connections, and sate of the art cargo
airport (Watson & Kraiselburd, 2009, p.3). Furthermore, the logistics area would be used to connect
Spain to the south of France, Italy and Portugal (Watson & Kraiselburd, 2009, p.3).
. Moreover, to overcome the fact that Aragon was a land–locked territory, part of the plan was to
create a "dry port" through agreements with the most important ports in Spain's (located in Bilbao,
Barcelona and Valencia). Such ports would benefit from the possibility of directing goods away
from the expensive and congested real around the port itself, and clients would benefit because
PLAZA could give the customers the flexibility to choose the best port for each occasion (Watson &
Kraiselburd,2009, p.3). This case shows that Ricardo Garcia, who is managing director of PLAZA
centered an analysis on one hypothetical example, to clarify his thought on positioning the PLAZA
as a preferred location for European companies seeking to develop their distribution network. This
report also suggests recommendations that the PLAZA should

Influence Of The British Colonial Empire During The Mid...
During the mid 1650s, tensions between Spain and Britain were high and Britain was looking for a
way to gain a basis of operations in the Caribbean. Through this, it would be easier for Britain to
weaken the influence that Spain held over the New World. In 1654, a fleet sailed from England with
the goal of capturing the island of Hispaniola. This effort proved unsuccessful, and the fleet was
reluctant to return to Britain empty handed. The Spanish defenses at Jamaica were low which made
the invasion of the island successful. Once the British had taken over Jamaica, they were able to
develop a powerful colony with a commercial background based first on privateering and trade, and
later on though sugar plantations and slavery. It was because of these institutions that helped the
British colonial empire to become more powerful than that of any other nation at this time. Though
Jamaica was not the original target for capture during the Anglo–Spanish war, it soon proved to be
one of Britain's most valuable colonies.
Spain held the main sphere of power in the West Indies during the mid 1600s, controlling many of
the islands. With this came a massive trade network and a large amount of political influence. All of
this was not something the Britain was going to let slip away. What she needed was a base of
operation in the West Indies from which the British could begin to interfere in Spanish affairs and
gain part of the wealth that Spain was earning in the Americas. Following the

Carthage And The Punic Wars Essay
Carthage was first founded as a trading post in the year of 814 BC.
Carthage was founded by the Phoenician Princess Elyssa–Dido on a peninsula from Africa which
extends into the Mediterranean Sea. According to legend
Elyssa_Dido fled from her brother Pygmalion, the king of Tyre, after he killed her husband. The
post benefited from the vast market for the goods that it traded and grew in importance quickly. It
first had warehouses in which raw metals and finished metal products which the Phoenicians used
and had made were stored. Carthage then started making metal products for Spain. These products
were cheap due to they traded these cheap goods to Spain for the raw metals. Carthage soon became

This began the Punic wars. There were three Punic wars. Rome and Carthage were the two strongest
contenders of the central Mediterranean Sea of that time. In each of these wars Carthage lost. These
wars lasted off and on from 246 BC to 149 BC, with Carthage eventually being destroyed.
The First Punic War started in 264 BC and lasted to 241 BC. In the first half of the 3rd century BC
Carthage held many territories that made it easy to control and dominate the western Mediterranean
Sea. However, when they conquered Messana on the north eastern tip of Sicily, in 263, they faced
the
Romans for ware for the first time. The people of Messana requested aid from
Rome and Rome came to aid. The fear of a powerful neighbor was only one out of several
motivations, next to the promise of glory that got Rome to aid in the fight. This war was fought
mainly at sea around Sicily, and Carthage was by far the strongest of the two in this field. This
superiority was met by a large scale Roman construction of the navel fleet after their land forces
captured one of the Carthaginian ships. Soon this was reflected in the fightings, and in 256 Carthage
was besieged, but the Romans were defeated. Then for some years Carthage was the most successful
who was commanded by Hamilcar. However, at the battle at the Aegates Islands in 241, the
Carthaginians were beaten so badly that they requested peace. This agreement involved leaving

Louisiana Purchase
Louisiana Purchase I believe that the Louisiana Purchase was one of the greatest impacts
on American society because of the large amount of land and how it helped our economy. In this
report you will see how lucky that the United States is to have obtained this large piece of land from
France. Their are many reasons why Napoleon had to sell this large piece of land. Napoleon thought
that this land could be a great asset to the French if they knew what to do with it. He didn't want to
sell the Louisiana territory because he still had dreams of having a French empire in America. At
this point in time Napoleon's dream would never come true because France was almost always at

Louisiana Purchase was New Orleans and Florida's two big sea ports. The New Orleans sea port is

Colonization of America
When the Europeans had discovered America, the possibilities for them were endless. Although
mistakenly discovered, it greatly aroused the curiosity of many European explorers. There were new
opportunities for them to expand, and in more than just one way. Chances to spread religion, boost
their economy, and help themselves politically. As soon as Columbus returned, the pope issued a
decree saying the world itself was an inheritance of Christianity. Spain and Portugal, the two main
Christian powers at the time, set out to spread Christianity all across the world following the Treaty
of Tordesillas in 1494. What better place to start then with the new found land of the Americas. As

and their ships increased and carried materials such as cloth and wool between European and
American ports, and an economic boom with a steady population increase to show for it. This
pushed exploration further in all directions, and they now had plenty of reasons to continue
expansion. From the initial dominance of Christianity to the Protestant Reformation, religious cause
for navigating toward America suited both sides. The political causes were justified in the
monarchies interest in the new land, creating a way to expand their control, but eventually leading to
war among one another. Economically, the Europeans benefited extremely well, and for that reason
alone gave them a strong incentive for colonization in America. The three causes all relate with one
another, and one cause relies heavily on another. The Europeans exploration had not expected to

Cuba In The 18th Century
The economies of Cuba and Puerto Rico are very similar during the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries.
As Spain colonized these two islands in the 16th century under the idea that gold was abundant.
Thus in turn the islands became a safe port for Spain and her vessels. It also set out to be a huge
migration from the Spain to the islands, because everyone was set to search for gold. . This turned
out to be short lived as the mining of gold peaked in 1517 till 1819. By Spain using Cuba and Puerto
Rico for mining gold they needed slave laborers as the local Indians. The Indians soon became
unsatisfied with their new conditions of living, they became hostile and many not able to cope with

The Indians now called People of Color, were once free on their own land are now forced to
cultivate it. Although the original intent of the encomienda was to reduce the abuses of forced labor
(repartimiento) employed shortly after the discovery of the New World, in practice it became a form
of enslavement. As legally defined in 1503, an encomienda (from encomendar, "to entrust")
consisted of a grant by the crown to a conquistador, soldier, official, or others of a specified number
of Indians living in a particular area. The receiver of the grant, the encomendero, could exact tribute
from the Indians in gold, in kind, or in labor and was required to protect them and instruct them in
the Christian faith. The encomienda did not include a grant of land, but in practice the
encomenderos gained control of the Indians' lands and failed to fulfill their obligations to the Indian
population. Since the increase of settlers in islands, and the suicide of many of the Indians, resulted
in Spain going to Africa to get slave's to mine and cultivate. The African slaves are the third society
to merge on to the islands. The People of Color and Slaves have outnumbered the whites
significantly. As the years past, these three societies seem to merge into one society, with very big

Did Jefferson Use The Mississippi River And The New Orleans
Thomas Jefferson used the Mississippi River to transport goods to the port at New Orleans. At the
time Spain was controlling the Mississippi River and New Orleans and was threatening to close the

Spain called the Pinckney Treaty. It guaranteed them the right to use the Mississippi and the New

European Exploration Research Paper
European exploration was a time period in European history when European countries explored and
discovered new parts of the world. The desire to grow rich and spread Christianity alongside
advances in sailing technology lead to European exploration. European countries wanted the same
success in trading with Asia as Italy, so they sought a direct trade route to Asia to bypass the Italian
merchants who sold their goods from Asia at unreasonable prices. The spread of Christianity also
led to European exploration because they believed it was their sacred duty to convert non–Catholics,
which led to discovering new people and converting them. Lastly, advances in sailing technology,
such as the caravel, astrolabe, and compass, led to European exploration by allowing for longer
voyages and greater distances being able to be crossed. The desire to grow rich, spread Christianity,

The Louisiana Territory And How It Changed America Forever
The American landscape has always been that of great majestic glory. But this was not always so.
The westward expansion was not always in the cards for the Americans. The French had mostly
settled from the Mississippi River in the east to the Rocky Mountains in the west and from the Gulf
of Mexico in the south to the Canadian border in the north. With the Louisiana Purchase the U.S
acquired most of that land. How did this land help define the United States of America as a Nation?
This essay will discuss the actions leading up to the Acquirement of the Louisiana territory and how
it changed America forever.
In 1762 France ceded French Louisiana west of the Mississippi River to Spain. The French also
transferred almost all of its remaining North American holdings to Britain in 1763. Spain was no
longer a dominant country and they did little to develop Louisiana during the next three decades in
which they held it. Spain in 1796 allied itself with France causing Britain in a bold move to use its
navy to cut off the Spanish from reaching America.
The Spanish in 1801 signed in secret, a treaty with France to return Louisiana Territory to France.
This set off a series of concerns for the Americans. Americans had been moving westward into the
Ohio River and Tennessee River valley areas since the 1780's and the Port of New Orleans was a
strategic port of entry as well as the Mississippi River which was needed if the U.S was going to be
able to ship good through the Gulf of Mexico.

Timeline and Significance of the Louisiana Purchase
The Louisiana Purchase, including the Mississippi river and west, was purchased by the United
States in 1803. The U.S. paid around four cents an acre, making the exchange the biggest land
acquisition in its history. The land doubles the size of the United States making them a powerhouse
and expedited westward expansion. The story of the Louisiana Purchase begins with French and
Spanish control; Jefferson's need for the Port of New Orleans and ultimately the acquisition of over
800,000 square miles of lands rich with gold, silver, forestry and the mighty Mississippi River.

Pros And Cons Of Purchasing The Louisiana Territory
Becoming president, Thomas Jefferson had to make a decision whether to go against his moral
dilemma or to stay true to it. Thomas Jefferson had just as many advantages as there were
disadvantages purchasing the Louisiana Territory. When Thomas Jefferson became president he had
a major problem to fix. In the early 1800s Americans discovered that Spain and France signed a
treaty giving France the Louisiana Territory which would give them the port of New Orleans and the
Mississippi River. The government was greatly concerned about who had control over the port of
New Orleans and the Mississippi River. To the government's eyes whoever had power over the port
of New Orleans and the Mississippi River was a humungous threat to America. President Thomas
Jefferson knew that he had to take action very soon. America knew that if France ended up owning
the port of New Orleans and the Mississippi River, it would allow them easy access into any ...

President Thomas Jefferson only knew that he was getting what he wanted to help him out but he
had no idea of what the land had to offer for him and his country. For example, in the treaty between

of the territory were. Now President Thomas Jefferson would have to find out from Spain what the
boundaries were for their new territory. Another problem in purchasing the Louisiana Territory is
that President Thomas Jefferson did not know what the land had to offer besides the port of New
Orleans and the Mississippi River. Since Thomas Jefferson did not know the land had in store for
him he sent Meriwether Lewis and William Clark on an expedition to travel their new land. When
America bought the Louisiana Territory they did not have the fifteen million dollars that they

The Benefits Of European Exploration : Pros And Cons Of...
No one can deny there are hardships people face when exploring new lands and creating
governments far from home. European exploration was no exception. Though there were costs and
benefits to European exploration, it is apparent through analysis of primary sources that the benefits
outweighed the costs. Through the money made by trading and farming, the spread of Christianity to
Indians, and the political power gained by conquering land, there were overwhelming benefits on
the Spanish side.
The Spanish established colonies in America that were more beautiful than anything they had seen
before in Spain. Columbus describes one of the islands in a letter announcing his discovery: "There
are great and beautiful mountains, vast fields, groves, fertile plains, very sustainable for planting and
cultivating" (Letter 1 3). By describing how fertile the soil is and how great the land is, Columbus
implies these new colonies would be an ideal place to farm, and in the Americas, there were no
shortage of goods to harvest. Later in his letter, Columbus reveals, "This Hispaniola, moreover,
abounds in different kinds of spices, in gold and in metals" (Letter 1 3). The European explorers
discovered sugar, tobacco, corn, and other goods that the colonists farmed in America and brought
back to Europe to trade. These foreign goods were harder to come by in Europe and made a profit
for farmers in America. Along with trading new items, gold mining was a source of income for the
colonists

Philip II and Peter the Great Philip II of Spain (1527–1598) and Peter the Great of Russia (1672–

Although from two different time periods, the impact of their decision making, and temperaments

during a time where the desire for power and absolutism in one's country and throughout Europe

In addition to suppressing their revolts, Peter successfully undermined the lifestyle of the boyars,
without losing their commitment to the state. He accomplished this with his establishment of the
Table of Ranks, which designated the boyars specific roles in either the bureaucracy or military,
making them workers of the state. These necessary steps allowed Russia to build a new, strong
military force, and a powerful centralized government. With increasing military strength, Peter the
Great initiated the organization of his new navy. A strong navy, which Russia previously lacked, was
essential to the state, due to the absence of warm water ports. While water does surround Russia, it
is frozen over for the majority of the year, which made trade relatively impossible at the time.
Therefore, capturing other warm water ports was a necessary step to increase Russian power. This
necessity led to conflicts with both the Ottoman Empire, and the Swedish, who blocked Russia from
the ports they desired. The strong navy that Peter developed, known as the Baltic fleet, had early
successes in capturing Ottoman ports such as Azov; however, its main target was the Swedish who
controlled Baltic Sea. The Swedish King at the time Charles XII, fought against Peter in the Great
Northern War for these ports. In the battle of Poltava, Peter's well trained fleet successfully crushed

An Unhappy Relationship Between Parents and Children in the Red Ball Khan conveys how the
story, Red Ball shows an unhappy relationship between the father and Bolan in several ways. Firstly,
through the contrasts of descriptions and the use of language. Secondly, through use of themes and
characterisation. It is very clear that the relationships in Bolan's family are unhappy. Khan makes
these ideas clear through a variety of techniques. Firstly, he contrasts the differences between
Bolan's house with his bowling skills in cricket. Bolan's family live in a place like a prison or an

Therefore, he uses the example of a sunset in the Square. As he says, "the sun's rays and the
shadows of the trees in the Woodford Square were playing tug o' war, both stretched out thin in the

Bolan's last house in Tunapuna and the Woodford Square. Therefore, he feels torn of Tunapuna but
he also loves the Square in Port of Spain. Therefore, I think Bolan will not be very happy of the
move from Tunapuna to the Port of Spain. Thirdly, the example of how Khan shows the unhappy
relationship in the Bolan's family is through the choice of theme. One such example is that the crime
and punishment that Bolan is having is unfair. When he goes to the "Market School", he could not
hear what the teacher is saying. "That cost six lashes in the palm for what the teacher called 'day
dreaming'." The punishment that Bolan takes is not relevant, because that are not his false.
Moreover, no one will be happy after someone has beaten you up. One other example is the
difficulty of adapting to a new home. Bolan is call name by people like, "Thinny Boney", "Match–
stick foot". That shows Bolan is having difficulty in getting into the group. However, he did not

Annexation Of The Philippines Created The American Empire...
Annexation of the Philippines Created the American Empire The history of the world is one filled
with war, brutality, and greed from nations exerting their might to gain power or land. Driven by
greed, history is written by the wants and desires of nations to become larger, wealthier, at the
expense of those smaller forms a never–ending cycle from the time of the earliest writings, to
modern days. The United States is no different. From the time we occupied the east coast, driving
the Native Americans west, to our westward expansion, further driving the Native Americans and
Mexico out of their lands, we have never been satisfied. Once we reached the west coast, our eyes
began scanning across the oceans. With the country secure, the United States needed foreign lands
to establish the empire. The Philippines would provide this opportunity for us. The Spanish–

Essay On The Louisiana Purchase
On April 30, 1803 France sold 2,144,510 square kilometers of land to the United States of America
known as the Louisiana Purchase. The United States of America paid 15 million dollars (about 283
million dollars today) in this treaty. The Louisiana Purchase was one of the most important land
trading in history. It provided territory for westward expansion and extend the land area; however, it
was opposed by many people at that time. In the same time, 15 million dollars total was much more
than the national financial capacity of the time. In any case, the Louisiana Purchase was so
important to the US because it gave them a better way of trading to foreign countries and allowed
the United States to become a much larger territory.
The Louisiana Purchase territory in that time was much bigger than the Louisiana Territory today. In
the Louisiana Purchase, Louisiana' s territory started from the Mississippi River to the beginning of
the Rocky Mountains. The Louisiana Purchase territory included Arkansas, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas,
Oklahoma, and Nebraska, parts of Minnesota and Louisiana west of Mississippi River, including
New Orleans, big parts of North and northeastern New Mexico, South Dakota, northern Texas, some
parts of Wyoming, Montana, and Colorado as well as portions of Canadian provinces Alberta and
Saskatchewan.
At that time the Mississippi River had become an important transport route for agricultural products
west of the Appalachian Mountains in the United States, while

How Did Spain Purchase Louisiana Colonies
At the conclusion of the French and Indian War, Spain formally takes possession of the Louisiana
Colony as stipulated in the Treaty of Paris in 1763. France had secretly transferred Louisiana to
Spain in 1762 with the Treaty of Fountaineblue. "By the end of the French period of Louisiana, New
Orleans was a commercially prosperous, self–sustaining city, trading all across the French
commercial system" (Wall, p. 65). It had become a major port city for importing and exporting
products. With the transfer of rule from France to Spain, the Louisiana colony would experience
some social, political, cultural and economic consequences. The provisions of the Treaty of Paris of
1763 surprised the colonists of Louisiana. New Orleans residents were apprehensive and in some
cases hostile. Few residents want to be subject to Spanish rule. So much so that a group of wealthy
merchants travel to Paris to convince Sieur de Bienville to secure a meeting with King Louis XV.
But the King is committed to the transfer and will not meet with them. Louisiana's fate is sealed.

The colony is to obey Spain's strict mercantile policies over trade and commerce. His new rules
limit legal trade for Louisiana to a list of designated Spanish ships and new ports belonging to
Spain. He also set prices on goods. Merchants can no longer charge what they want and can no
longer trade with British colonies. The residents are not pleased with Governor Ulloa's policies and
believe his rules ruin the established trading arrangements of Louisiana. Louisiana has grown
accustomed to trading with French ports in the Caribbean and illegally with nearby British colonies.
Louisiana has created a lucrative commercial community and is unhappy with the new economic
policies of Spain. In spite of the discontent, Ulloa seeks to improve relations with the

Answers On Operational Objectives

  • 1. Answers on Operational Objectives Question 1 1a. The primary strategic objective as outlined in the Directive for Commander–in–Chief Allied Expeditionary Force is to cut off the Axis supplies to Africa by means of the Mediterranean ports. The ports currently under Axis control include Algiers, Oran, Tunis, Bone, Philippville and Casablanca. These ports are currently held by French troops, who although under Axis control are considered friendly to the Allies. The secondary strategic objective as outlined in the Directive for Commander–in–Chief Allied Expeditionary Force is to put an end to the Gazala Gallop enabling Allied troops to enter Europe through Africa. This secondary strategic goal can only happen once the Axis supplies are cut off through the ports preventing yet another advance by the Axis African troops. 1b. The planners outlined a four day direct assault and a 25 day follow–up assault to take the ports. These operational objectives involve army, navy and air support, each will be outlined below. Army: The army will be in charge of all initial ground assaults. On the first day there will be simultaneous attacks of Algiers, Oran, Bone and Philippville. Algiers and Oran will be attacked with full American troops. Bone and Philippville will be attacked by primarily British forces with some backup coming from American forces. On the following days, the remaining ports of Tunis and Casablanca will be taken. Remaining troops will guard the ports and ensure Ally control. Navy: The navy will ... • 3. Louisiana Purchase Thomas Jefferson's Dilemma President Thomas Jefferson had a dilemma. His country The United States was no longer allowed to use the waterway that kept his growing nation alive. He knew the danger of not having access to the waterport; so he made his controversial decision of the "Louisiana Purchase." This decision had a lasting effect on The United States. Thomas Jefferson's decision on the "Louisiana Purchase" had a positive impact on history. Before the "Louisiana Purchase" the territory was owned by Spain. The territory included the Mississippi River which gave Spain control over trade and ships. For a while Spain allowed The United States to use the Mississippi River to ship their goods. Although in 1798 the treaty that allowed the U.S to use the river was revoked. Spain had become more protective over the port since ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This put President Jefferson on edge because many of the people were worried. Slavery was still allowed in the U.S but was outlawed in France. The people feared that Napoleon would free all the slaves in the Louisiana territory, which could influence other slaves in the U.S to rebel. His people felt helpless and Jefferson knew that he had to do something to console them. Jefferson felt the best thing to do would be to try to purchase New Orleans from Napoleon. He was hesitant at first to make the offer with Napoleon because he didn't want to break the law by doing something he didn't have the power to do. He was reassured by Article 1, Section 8, and Clause 18 of the U.S Constitution which states " The Congress shall have power –– To make all laws necessary and proper for carrying into execution the foregoing powers, and all other powers vested by the Constitution in the government of the United States, or in any department or officer thereof." This gave him the freedom to make independent decisions when he felt necessary. This helped finalize his decision on offering to buy New Orleans from ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. American History : The Louisiana Purchase Stefany Estrella American History 1865 Yeurys Pujols December 6th, 2014 The Louisiana Purchase Introduction More than two centuries ago, in 1803, the United States undertook a transaction that increased its territory by almost double. The event took place within a short notice, without engaging in war and with the briefest negotiations. Hailed as the most significant achievement of the Thomas Jefferson administration, the purchase of Louisiana expanded the US territory by about eight hundred and twenty–eight million square miles. Thomas Jefferson, the president at the time, purchased Louisiana for approximately four cents an acre. The territory stretched from the Rocky Mountains in the west to the Mississippi river in the east and from the Canadian borders in the north to the Mexican gulf in the south. The transaction to purchase Louisiana took place at a time when France, Spain, and Britain, were among the world powers of the time. In addition, they all had a stake in the US territory and specifically the crucial Mississippi river. The discussion in this paper will analyse the circumstances surrounding the purchase of Louisiana. It will also discuss the conditions that led America to purchase the Louisiana territory from the French in 1803. The discussion will then move to assess the effect of the Louisiana Purchase on the future development of the USA, as well as the international balance of power. The paper will also explore the political, economic, and social ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. History Of The Louisiana Purchase Louisiana Purchase: America's Single Largest Land Deal The Louisiana Purchase was by far the single largest land deal in the United States, occupying the western half of the Mississippi River basin. Purchased from France in 1803 at less than three cents per acre for 828,000 square miles, it was the greatest land bargain in American history (Blumberg, 100). By doubling the size of the United States, the Louisiana Territory allowed the country to strengthen itself, materially and strategically, granting access to the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico for trading (Harriss). Although the purchase had a great influence on American history as a whole, Americans and Louisianans must be aware of the impact the Louisiana Purchase had on Louisiana history, hence the name. Tracing back to the origin of the Louisiana Purchase lies a rich and indispensable story. After the Seven Years War, Spain gained control of New Orleans, although many immigrants and Americans were settling in the territory. Driven to negotiate with the United States in fear of an imminent alliance between the United States and Britain, Spain had to ensure peace with the United States. In 1795, the Treaty of San Lorenzo, also known as Pinckney's Treaty with Spain, allowed American merchants "right of deposit" in New Orleans, in other words, allowing duty–free transport through the port of New Orleans (Wagner). In addition to duty–free transport, Pinckney's Treaty also gave Americans the right to travel ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Similarities And Differences Between The Spanish American... Several nations, most notably Spain, France, and Great Britain, attempted to colonize North America after the Americas were discovered. Some of these colonies became successful and was very beneficial to their nations, bringing in raw materials and new crops. However, this also led to some conflicts between the Native Americans and the Europeans. Even though these European colonies developed in different areas in North America, there were some political, social, and economic similarities, such as the French and Spanish governments, main religion in New France and New Spain, and the basis of the economy, and some differences, such as the views on the Indians, the New England government, and the focus on what was traded. All of these colonies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The majority of the population in each of the colonies was Christian, but New France and New Spain had mainly Catholics while New England was mainly Protestant. This disparity was due to the reasons the people decided to move to the colonies. Protestants moved to New England to move away from the Church of England since they believed that the English Reformation didn't change enough things in the church. However, the Catholics from New Spain and New France wanted to either convert the Native Americans into Christians or establish some Christian influence in North America. In addition, they had very different views on what the Native Americans were and how to treat them. In New Spain, they saw them strictly as savages that were either supposed to be saved by converting them into Christians or killed and conquered. In New England, their view of them was originally positive because they were given assistance to survive on the colonies, but they did become enemies due to their greed. In New France, their view was very positive as they tried to make an alliance with the natives due to the Indians' involvement in the fur trade. All of these varying views were a result of their differing goals in which they became friends or enemies depending on the positives of having that relationship, such as New France's ... • 13. Panama History The history of Panama has been largely influenced by the strategic position of this narrow isthmus that links North America with South America and separates the Pacific Ocean from the Atlantic Ocean. The Cunas, Chocos, and Guaymas were some of the indigenous tribes that have occupied the region. Although these civilizations were not as advanced as the Maya or Inca, they may have been influenced by them. The explorer Rodrigo de Bastidas disembarked on the territory in 1501 and, the following year, Cristóbal Columbus reclaimed Panama in the name of Spain. Due to its unique geographical position, Panama has an abundant historical heritage. For hundreds of years, Panama has served as across both maritime and territorial. It was near the present ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The city of Panama continued to thrive as a colonial port until it became the favorite target of European pirates. In 1668, an English pirate, Lord Henry Morgan invaded the port of Portobelo in search of riches. He besieged the port for a ransom of a hundred thousand gold coins, but this was but a distraction. His real plan was to plunder the old city of Panama. Once conquered, it burned the city. Other pirate attacks resulted in the port being no longer used as a strategic point in the transport of wealth to Europe. After the destruction of the old city, the present one was founded and life continued in Panama. Later, Panama joined as a nation and in 1821 decided to separate from Spain to join the Greater Colombia. The Independence of Panama and the Construction of the Canal. From the era of the Spanish conquerors, the idea was to build a canal through the narrow territory of Panama. Westward Expansion and the Effects on the United States Essay Running Head: WESTWARD EXPANSION Westward Expansion and the Effects On the United States October 3, 2007 Abstract The Louisiana Purchase was the largest land deal in our history. It doubled the size of the United States and gave us a strong face as an economic power. It brought immigrants from all over the world for the idea of owning land and making a living for themselves. We also had a second expansion with the Adams–Onis treaty in 1819 (Davidson, 2002, p.p. 246–247) where we clearly defined the United States and Spanish board to the Pacific and obtained the Florida territory. He lost the island of Haiti during a slave revolt which stopped his plans to expand. Without the supplies and port of Haiti the Louisiana Territory was useless to him. He was also still involved in war with England and needed additional finances for that battle. In order to obtain additional funds for his war he made the decision to sell the Louisiana Territory to the United States. Thomas Jefferson was the President at the time and knew the implications of not having the rights to ship through the Mississippi and the port of New Orleans. Prior to Bonaparte sending his minister to the United States Jefferson had already sent Robert Livingston to offer to purchase the New Orleans at a minimum. Bonaparte not only offered New Orleans but the entire Louisiana Territory. The treat and sale to the United States was finalized in April of 1803 for approximately $15 million dollars. This is recognized as the largest land purchase in United States history. It is also a major accomplishment as it was completed without the loss of life through a war. Spain

This money allowed the Spanish to provide minimal protection for these colonies. Still the cost for fortification, standing armies and a navy could not be justified. Between the years of 1535 and 1547, some sixty–six Spanish ships were captured by French corsairs (Lane 19). Shortly after in the 1550's, the Spanish came to regret their passive defense strategy when French corsairs made their most punishing raids ever on the Spanish West Indies. They descended on colonies like Puerto Rico, Hispaniola and Cuba, and caused heavy destruction that they never really recovered from. Finally in the early 1560's, Spain was forced to react with expensive long– term defenses. Since the Spanish waited so long to do so they not only lost wealth because of what was captured, but now they also had to spend money to protect what was left. Moreover, French corsairs turned to contraband trading. They would go into small remote Spanish ports and sell to the settlers slaves, cloth and other goods that they had taken from Spanish ships. The French were not only taking goods from the Spanish ships, they were making a profit by selling it back to the Spanish. This would mark the end of the French pirates interfering with Spanish trade for the time being (Lane 29). • 41. Influence Of The British Colonial Empire During The Mid... During the mid 1650s, tensions between Spain and Britain were high and Britain was looking for a way to gain a basis of operations in the Caribbean. Through this, it would be easier for Britain to weaken the influence that Spain held over the New World. In 1654, a fleet sailed from England with the goal of capturing the island of Hispaniola. This effort proved unsuccessful, and the fleet was reluctant to return to Britain empty handed. The Spanish defenses at Jamaica were low which made the invasion of the island successful. Once the British had taken over Jamaica, they were able to develop a powerful colony with a commercial background based first on privateering and trade, and later on though sugar plantations and slavery. It was because of these institutions that helped the British colonial empire to become more powerful than that of any other nation at this time. Though Jamaica was not the original target for capture during the Anglo–Spanish war, it soon proved to be one of Britain's most valuable colonies. Spain held the main sphere of power in the West Indies during the mid 1600s, controlling many of the islands. With this came a massive trade network and a large amount of political influence. Although the original intent of the encomienda was to reduce the abuses of forced labor (repartimiento) employed shortly after the discovery of the New World, in practice it became a form of enslavement. As legally defined in 1503, an encomienda (from encomendar, "to entrust") consisted of a grant by the crown to a conquistador, soldier, official, or others of a specified number of Indians living in a particular area. The receiver of the grant, the encomendero, could exact tribute from the Indians in gold, in kind, or in labor and was required to protect them and instruct them in the Christian faith. • 55. European Exploration Research Paper European exploration was a time period in European history when European countries explored and discovered new parts of the world. The desire to grow rich and spread Christianity alongside advances in sailing technology lead to European exploration. European countries wanted the same success in trading with Asia as Italy, so they sought a direct trade route to Asia to bypass the Italian merchants who sold their goods from Asia at unreasonable prices. The spread of Christianity also led to European exploration because they believed it was their sacred duty to convert non–Catholics, which led to discovering new people and converting them. Lastly, advances in sailing technology, such as the caravel, astrolabe, and compass, led to European exploration by allowing for longer voyages and greater distances being able to be crossed. The desire to grow rich, spread Christianity, and advances in sailing technology led to European exploration. ... • 57. The Louisiana Territory And How It Changed America Forever The American landscape has always been that of great majestic glory. But this was not always so. The westward expansion was not always in the cards for the Americans. The French had mostly settled from the Mississippi River in the east to the Rocky Mountains in the west and from the Gulf of Mexico in the south to the Canadian border in the north. With the Louisiana Purchase the U.S acquired most of that land. How did this land help define the United States of America as a Nation? This essay will discuss the actions leading up to the Acquirement of the Louisiana territory and how it changed America forever. In 1762 France ceded French Louisiana west of the Mississippi River to Spain. The French also transferred almost all of its remaining North American holdings to Britain in 1763. Spain was no longer a dominant country and they did little to develop Louisiana during the next three decades in which they held it. Spain in 1796 allied itself with France causing Britain in a bold move to use its navy to cut off the Spanish from reaching America. The Spanish in 1801 signed in secret, a treaty with France to return Louisiana Territory to France. This set off a series of concerns for the Americans. Americans had been moving westward into the Ohio River and Tennessee River valley areas since the 1780's and the Port of New Orleans was a strategic port of entry as well as the Mississippi River which was needed if the U.S was going to be able to ship good through the Gulf of Mexico. ... Thomas Jefferson had just as many advantages as there were disadvantages purchasing the Louisiana Territory. When Thomas Jefferson became president he had a major problem to fix. In the early 1800s Americans discovered that Spain and France signed a treaty giving France the Louisiana Territory which would give them the port of New Orleans and the Mississippi River. The government was greatly concerned about who had control over the port of New Orleans and the Mississippi River. To the government's eyes whoever had power over the port of New Orleans and the Mississippi River was a humungous threat to America. • 63. The Benefits Of European Exploration : Pros And Cons Of... No one can deny there are hardships people face when exploring new lands and creating governments far from home. European exploration was no exception. Though there were costs and benefits to European exploration, it is apparent through analysis of primary sources that the benefits outweighed the costs. Through the money made by trading and farming, the spread of Christianity to Indians, and the political power gained by conquering land, there were overwhelming benefits on the Spanish side. The Spanish established colonies in America that were more beautiful than anything they had seen before in Spain. Columbus describes one of the islands in a letter announcing his discovery: "There are great and beautiful mountains, vast fields, groves, fertile plains, very sustainable for planting and cultivating" (Letter 1 3). By describing how fertile the soil is and how great the land is, Columbus implies these new colonies would be an ideal place to farm, and in the Americas, there were no shortage of goods to harvest. Later in his letter, Columbus reveals, "This Hispaniola, moreover, abounds in different kinds of spices, in gold and in metals" (Letter 1 3). The European explorers discovered sugar, tobacco, corn, and other goods that the colonists farmed in America and brought back to Europe to trade. These foreign goods were harder to come by in Europe and made a profit for farmers in America. Along with trading new items, gold mining was a source of income for the colonists ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In addition to suppressing their revolts, Peter successfully undermined the lifestyle of the boyars, without losing their commitment to the state. He accomplished this with his establishment of the Table of Ranks, which designated the boyars specific roles in either the bureaucracy or military, making them workers of the state. These necessary steps allowed Russia to build a new, strong military force, and a powerful centralized government. With increasing military strength, Peter the Great initiated the organization of his new navy. A strong navy, which Russia previously lacked, was essential to the state, due to the absence of warm water ports. While water does surround Russia, it is frozen over for the majority of the year, which made trade relatively impossible at the time. Therefore, capturing other warm water ports was a necessary step to increase Russian power. This necessity led to conflicts with both the Ottoman Empire, and the Swedish, who blocked Russia from the ports they desired. The strong navy that Peter developed, known as the Baltic fleet, had early successes in capturing Ottoman ports such as Azov; however, its main target was the Swedish who controlled Baltic Sea. The Swedish King at the time Charles XII, fought against Peter in the Great Northern War for these ports. An Unhappy Relationship Between Parents and Children in the Red Ball Khan conveys how the story, Red Ball shows an unhappy relationship between the father and Bolan in several ways. Firstly, through the contrasts of descriptions and the use of language. Secondly, through use of themes and characterisation. It is very clear that the relationships in Bolan's family are unhappy. Khan makes these ideas clear through a variety of techniques. Firstly, he contrasts the differences between Bolan's house with his bowling skills in cricket. You can also think of the sun's rays and the shadows are Bolan's last house in Tunapuna and the Woodford Square. Therefore, he feels torn of Tunapuna but he also loves the Square in Port of Spain. Therefore, I think Bolan will not be very happy of the move from Tunapuna to the Port of Spain. Thirdly, the example of how Khan shows the unhappy relationship in the Bolan's family is through the choice of theme. One such example is that the crime and punishment that Bolan is having is unfair. When he goes to the "Market School", he could not hear what the teacher is saying. "That cost six lashes in the palm for what the teacher called 'day dreaming'." The punishment that Bolan takes is not relevant, because that are not his false. Moreover, no one will be happy after someone has beaten you up. One other example is the difficulty of adapting to a new home. Bolan is call name by people like, "Thinny Boney", "Match– stick foot". That shows Bolan is having difficulty in getting into the group. Annexation of the Philippines Created the American Empire The history of the world is one filled with war, brutality, and greed from nations exerting their might to gain power or land. Driven by greed, history is written by the wants and desires of nations to become larger, wealthier, at the expense of those smaller forms a never–ending cycle from the time of the earliest writings, to modern days. The United States is no different. From the time we occupied the east coast, driving the Native Americans west, to our westward expansion, further driving the Native Americans and Mexico out of their lands, we have never been satisfied. The Philippines would provide this opportunity for us. The Spanish– American war delivered the opportunity for America's entry into the Philippines. The annexation of the Philippines transformed the United States into an empire and better prepared the Filipino people for independence. The United States of America paid 15 million dollars (about 283 million dollars today) in this treaty. The Louisiana Purchase was one of the most important land trading in history. It provided territory for westward expansion and extend the land area; however, it was opposed by many people at that time. In the same time, 15 million dollars total was much more than the national financial capacity of the time. In any case, the Louisiana Purchase was so important to the US because it gave them a better way of trading to foreign countries and allowed the United States to become a much larger territory. The Louisiana Purchase territory in that time was much bigger than the Louisiana Territory today.
