Australia Post Executive Summary
Executive Summary
Early into his tenure as Australia Post CEO, Ahmed Fahour recognised that the postal services
industry was in a state of transition and the organisation needed an urgent change in direction if it was
to survive in the long term. The extremely challenging landscape for the national carrier led Fahour to
focus his efforts on innovative solutions with the potential to transform Australia Post s business
model and strategically position the organisation in the heart of the digital economy. The focus on
internally developing strategic capabilities through innovation has seen a shift towards the
prioritisation of its workforce engagement and diversity, which Fahour believes are paramount for
businesses looking to make innovative changes. Technology continues to pose significant
opportunities and threats for the postal services industry, and while it has been a major disruptor by
eroding mail volumes, on the other hand, the rapid uptake of online shopping has boosted industry
performance resulting in exponential growth in demand for parcel delivery services. The following

The Minoans Civilization
The Minoans were a civilization who flourished from 3000 BCE until 1100 BCE on the island of
Crete, were greatly influenced by the Phoenicians, Egyptians, Syrians and the Anatolians (Britannica
Encyclopedia). This civilization made major contributions to Western European development in the
areas of language, architecture and art. It was the famous archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans who made
the astounding discoveries at Knossos in the early 1900 s that introduced to the world the fascinating
and wonderful sophistication of these early Greeks (Britannica Encyclopedia). The history of the
island has been molded by its proximity to the Aegean Sea. Its geographical location gave it control
over the sea and the lucrative trade routes. The Minoans traded with Egypt, the Levant, the Aegean,
and beyond to Italy, and Sicily.
The great Minoan civilization of Crete formed around palaces such as those at Knossos, Phaestus,
Ayia Triada, and Tyliossos. The extremely important Palace of Minos at Knossos gives us crucial
evidence of a continuous architectural brilliance and highly developed artistic sense, bringing together
all aspects of architectural style, art, and innovation during the Minoan period between 1700 BCE and
1580 BCE and continuing until the invasion of the Achaeans in the 12th century BCE (Britannica
Encyclopedia). The most famous palace is the palace of Minos of Knossos which demonstrates a

Pennant Hills Road was identified by the NRMA (National Roads and Motorists Association) as the
3rd worst road in New South Wales and in the Australian Capital Territory, and it is the 2nd worst road
in Sydney s road network. The NorthConnex Tunnel is expected to remove 9000 cars and 5 000 heavy

Gertrude Stein Research Paper
Gertrude Stein
Gertrude Stein is one of the most celebrated authors and patrons of the arts. She encouraged,
influenced and aided many literary and artistic figures through her support, investment and writings.
Stein was born on February 3, 1874 into upper middle class surroundings in Allegheny, Pennsylvania.
When she was 3 years old the family moved to Vienna and then on to Paris before returning to
America in late 1878. Gertrude and her brother Leo became very close although he was two years her
senior. They found like interests and became devoted allies through much of their early lives. Stein

Rumors of war began to surface by early 1914 as Germans marched toward Paris. In March, Gertrude
and Alice left Paris after a series of bombing alerts and zeppelin raids. They returned in 1916 and
decided to help out with the war efforts by joining the American Fund for French Wounded.[6]
In 1933, Stein published Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas which really was her own autobiography. It
became a best seller in the United States and elevated Stein s celebrity. Many articles were published
and she made a lot of money. Although hesitant at first because she did not know how she would be
received, Stein went on a lecture tour across America. She was welcomed with open arms everywhere
she went.
Upon returning to France in the spring of 1935 Gertrude and Alice went to their country home in
Bilignin for some privacy, away from Gertrude s new found celebrity status and rumors of war started
again. In addition to this, the landlord of 27 rue de Fleurus did not renew their lease, as his son wanted
to move into the apartment. They reluctantly relocated to another apartment on Germain Street in
Paris. I guess 27 got so historical, it just could not hold us any longer,[7] she said[8].
While in Bilignin during the summer of 1939 the war was quickly approaching.

Students Low Enthusiasm And Attitudes Of Research Methods
Stansbury and Munro (2013) and Ciarocco, Lewandowski and Volkom (2013) conducted two different
studies after observing students low enthusiasm and attitudes of research methods, a course that is
often seen as the hardest and most important class for a psychology undergraduate. In response to this,
both researchers decided to create hands on approaches for teaching research methods in an effort to
promote student engagement in the classroom. Both studies are structured around the understanding
that when students are engaged in conducting research, their appreciation of the material will increase,
and so will the comprehension of the material at hand. Additionally, the two were studies
fundamentally unable to use random assignment to conditions considering the inevitable negative
affects it would have on the students initial feelings of the class. In order to collect data, Ciarocco et
al. used seven point Likert scales to assess attitudes, whereas Stansbury and Munro gathered data by
using a multi question pretest/posttest to assess content knowledge. Experimental conditions where
constructed differently as well, Ciarocco et al. used multifaceted approach to teach five different
experimental designs expanding over the whole semester, and Stansbury and Munro focused on
teaching students to conduct factorial design research only, through the use of video games. Although,
both studies were designed and conducted moderately well, Stansbury and Munro was more effective

Theory of Operant Conditioning
Theory of Operant Conditioning
Instrumental conditioning, otherwise known as operant conditioning is a theory that B.F Skinner came
up with and is defined as a learning process by which the consequence of an operant response affects
the likelihood of the response recurring in the future. Basically, operant conditioning is a stimulus
response prototype that when reinforced, conditions individuals or organisms response to a desired
behavior (Huitt, W., Hummel, J., 1997) Our behaviors are shaped to be desirable or undesirable
through reinforcements, punishment and extermination. Overall, operant conditioning is seen to be
voluntary reaction that precedes the stimulus and the reinforcement. Classical conditioning is one of
the techniques used in behavioral training. The process of classical conditioning works with the
introduction of neutral stimuli before the original stimulus and the same reaction is elicited from the
organism even without the presence of the original stimulus. The Pavlov dog salivated with every
sight of food as the original stimulus for the salivation. When a neutral stimulus was introduced like a
bell that was rang each time before it was fed, the dog started salivating at the ringing of the bell even
before the food was availed.
Positive and negative reinforcement
Introduction of the negative reinforcement to construe behavior entails removal of an unfavorable
events or outcomes after the display of a behavior. A response is strengthened by the

Strategic Bombing During World War 2
World War 2 was a war fought in two distinct phases. The first was the last war of a new generation.
The second was emphatically the first of a new era . br br The British strategic bomber campaign was
of doubtful cost effectiveness . Bomber Command was by far the largest claimant on labour and
factory space within the armed forces. Relative to their size they suffered more casualties than any
other sector. br br The Anglo American bomber force was divided in terms of strategy. Bomber
Command believed it was too risky to bomb by day, while the Americans believed it was too difficult
to bomb by night. Initially both forces lacked accurate navigational equipment, which deterred them
from precision bombing. br br Germany developed a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The morale of the German people was not affected enough to effect their war waging capacity. Neither
a maintenance of productivity nor a rebuilding of industry could have been achieved by means of
compulsive but only by virtue of the voluntary response of German workers . br br It was assumed
that bombing raids would be made in the daylight. In August 1940 German bombers suffered heavily
in daylight even though they were escorted. This helped to confirm to Bomber Command that night
bombing was the best policy. Bomber Command flew night missions over Germany during the winter
of 1940 1941 in the belief their bombs had fallen within about 300 yards of their targets. This figure
was plainly wrong, a new assumption was made. The R.A.F decided the average error was closer to
1000 yards, which meant that Bomber Command could not be expected to hit targets as small as oil
facilities, until they had been equipped with vastly improved navigational aids. The U.S.A.A.F
opposed Bomber Commands view, they believed accurate bombing could only be achieved during the
day. They assumed unescorted bombers flying in well designed formations could penetrate the
German lines. On 14th October 1943, 60 out 291 flying fortresses were shot down by German fighters
during the last major raid on Schweinfurt. The formation had been obliged to fly 400 miles without
fighter cover. The Americans suspended daylight

Environmental Effects Of Desertification
Background: Desertification is the degradation of land and soil in dryland ecosystems caused by both
the climate and human activities. In the year 2000, one third of the population of the earth dwelled in
dryland ecosystems, and drylands are 41% of world s land. The effect of desertification is massive
because of the amount of people that live in affected areas. Drylands facilitate 44% of the food
production in the world and 50% of livestock, so these ecosystems are a very important source of
resources. 2.6 billion people depend of the food developed in drylands and many of those people have
jobs making the food. 52% of the land is being affected in some way by degradation because it
removes the moisture that is needed to grow or herd food. Around 800 million people are going
hungry and around 80% of these people are small land owners or they do not own any land and are
very poor. This means that those small land owners might not have any land in the end because of the
deterioration of healthy soil. Land degradation also effects water quantity and quality. Clean water is
one of the most important resources in the world, and desertification eliminates that resource. 74% of
those in poverty are directly affected by land degradation. 10 20% of drylands are degraded already.
The places most effected by desertification are sub Saharan and Central Asia drylands. Desertification
occurs for various reasons. It can come from a failure to balance how much the ecosystem can give as

Analysis Of Nineteen Eighty Four By George Orwell
Ms. Adriana Coppola is the English III teacher at Randolph High school for students that are in
eleventh grade. At this point, this was the third block of the day, only a block before lunch. The desks
were arranged in a small circle with an outer circle, for this purpose, the class was participating in a
Socratic circle. In a more student based activity for the class period, Ms. Coppola allowed the students
a decent amount of control over the discussions directions. The students had a Do Now question when
they first walked into the door before the Socratic circles began. This was a text based Socratic circle,
using the novel Nineteen Eighty Four by George Orwell. One group went first in the inner circle to
discuss and the outer circle watched, taking notes. Then the two groups switched roles. Ms. Coppola
incorporated two unique aspects to her Socratic circles that I had never seen before. One of the
students was the discussion leader, leading the discussion and asking questions to the rest of the circle.
Another addition in the Socratic circle was that were hot seats where the outer circle is allowed to sit
in an unoccupied seat in the inner circle to offer their opinion on a particular topic in the discussion for
extra credit, before going back to their seats in the outer circle. Students were allowed to take index
cards with questions for their circle and essays they had written as a guide for the circle. In the
beginning, students seem nervous, looking to Ms.

King Leopold s Ghost Sparknotes
King Leopold s Ghost tells the narrative of the struggles experienced by those in the Congo following
the discovery of rubber and the privatized funds of a King Leopold of Belgium. Recounted by Adam
Hochschild, a lecturer at the University of California Berkeley s School of Journalism, it gives light to
the stomach turning truths of imperialism. King Leopold s Ghost falls to critics in some aspects, as
highlighted in a review by Lysle Meyer. Meyer, works for the African Studies and has written a book
regarding this specific subject. The novel, which successfully exposes the horror of King Leopold s
rubber empire in Congo, lacks sources as well as contains simplistic prose that can seem dull at times.
Meyer s review of the novel agrees that the book is well informative; however, Meyer also states that
without due sourcing the book falls short of expectations for the average historian. One can easily
agree with this point, as there is quite obviously no footnotes. Meyer makes this point stating . . . the
publisher has eschewed footnotes, presumably in deference to the average reader s reputed aversion to
them. ( Review 2 ). In an attempt to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hochschild wrote of a particularly interesting topic, one that seems to be perused by most historians. It
is very clear that he gets off topic in an attempt to foreshadow, but it ends up making the writing long
and hard to follow. This deducts from his aim to the average reader, as a student will likely find the
writing monotonous. Even at one point, Hochschild relates But that is getting ahead of our story (KLG
165). This makes the writing unorganized, as he goes off track multiple times instead of narrating the
story. He makes points without going back to consider relevancy, and fails to make the connections

We do not quite say that the new is more valuable because it fits in; but its fitting in is a test of its
value a test, it is true, which can only be slowly and cautiously applied, for we are none of us infallible

If it does decide carefully, for the outcome is yours to deal with. Each individual person has their own
set of ethics. This set of moral principals can vary radically, depending on the subject, circumstance,
or even upbringing. On any given day an individuals morals can change depending on the happenings
of that day or previous days. One tiny event may have such a large impact on an individual that they
may choose to rethink their whole ethical system. The ethics you determine are yours and yours alone.
You do not need a book explaining why you feel the way you do. Each individual has suffered through
different hardships and has breezed through different high periods in their life. Ethics build as a person
ages and experiences more. The more you have seen and witnessed, the more able you are to draw
conclusions as to whether you have a point of view on that particular subject. In addition to individual
and personal codes of ethics, each person also has their own method of making decisions.

The Reid Vs. Reid Essay
It may seem implausible that someone would confess to a crime they did not commit, but it does
happen, and the prevalence of such confessions occurs at a much higher rate in juvenile populations.
Aggressive interrogation methods, like those used in the Reid Technique, lead to a greater probability
of false confessions among juvenile subjects than if those techniques had not been used. In a study
completed by University of San Francisco law professor and renowned false confession researcher,
Richard Leo, 35% of the 125 proven false confession cases he sampled included confessors who were
under the age of 18 (2004). Before we examine what it is about this technique that prompts false
confessions, we must first outline the systematic, nine step process developed by John E. Reid
Associates nearly forty years ago.
The Reid Technique is the most widely adopted interrogation method used by branches of law
enforcement, the military, government entities, as well as private enterprises. To say that it is the
unchallenged gold standard would be an understatement, and understandably so. If the main goal of an
interrogation is to win a confession from the accused, then there is no greater tool. According to Reid s
own marketing propaganda, 95% Reid trained survey respondents indicated that their confession rate
improved when using the Reid Technique. More than half of them stated that their confession rate
increased by more than 25% and nearly a quarter of them said it increased by

individual possessed two identical copies of a gene, the individual is said to be homozygous with

Christian Teaching and Discussion About Euthanasia Essay
Christian Teaching and Discussion About Euthanasia
The word euthanasia comes from two Greek words eu meaning good and thanatos meaning death.
Literally it means a good death .
Euthanasia is arranging for someone who has an incurable terminal illness to die as quickly and as
painlessly as possible. It is the act of purposely aiding someone to die, instead of letting nature take its
course. There are four main types of euthanasia these are: Voluntary, Involuntary, Active and Passive.
Euthanasia is currently illegal in the UK, but is legal in the Netherlands and the state of Oregon
however; it is still a widely discussed topic, which raises many moral questions. In this essay I will be

Also the Roman Catholic Church opposes euthanasia because of the strongly taught commandment:
Thou shall not kill. To add to that: the Roman Catholic Church regards the sanctity of life as an
extremely important teaching and places the highest value on human life and suffering and pain do not
stop life being valuable and is not a reason for ending life, therefore the Church believes that people
should leave the dying process to God, not to humans who by allowing euthanasia are, for Roman
Catholics, devaluing human life and making it seem disposable. Instead people should die with dignity
and let them be loved unconditionally by God until the end of earthly life. Therefore Roman Catholics
oppose euthanasia, this is an absolute view.
The Church of England s report in 1975 on dying well and the Methodist Church s statement in 1974
both oppose euthanasia. They emphasise the fact that human life is sacred.
However Christian views today vary with most Christians not accepting euthanasia.
A Christian teaching that can be used for euthanasia is the sanctity of life. Christians believe that all
life is given as a gift from God:
God made man in his own image, male and female he created them. Gen
Therefore because God gave life, it is a gift and it is valuable because humans are made in God s

interdependence of nations caused by necessary trading lead to a rise in economic influence in politics
which in turn lead to economic conflicts becoming wars between nations. I agree with his point, and
believe this fact is best exemplified in Anglo Dutch relations. The first two Anglo Dutch Wars were
dominated by economic conflict, but after the treaty of Breda in 1667, economic interests showed a
less prevalent effect in Anglo Dutch political relationships and the third Anglo Dutch war was unique
as its cause was purely political. The English Civil War began the conflict that would lead to the first
Anglo Dutch war. The Parliamentary forces were largely protestant, and the parliamentary forces
reached out for an alliance with the Dutch Republic to form a bond with the only protestant nation.
Rommelse states that the Dutch republic realized that an alliance with England would allow for
English aggression in claiming previously Dutch only trading routes. This fact is further supported by
an article written by J.E. Farnell. The protestant forces now in control of England were angry at the
rejection of an alliance, and in 1651 passed the Navigation Acts with the sole purpose of hurting
Dutch trade with the rest of Europe. By limiting who could carry English goods or

The Pros and Cons of Social Networking
Introduction In this era the social networking plays vital role in everyone s life. Everything has its pros
and cons. The most common social networking site is facebook. Everyone has their own profile for
free as a result billon users on facebook. Threats arising from social networking: System overload Due
to non corporate usage the performance of network degraded. The drainage of resources may become
powerful. As social networking sites widen into shared and streamed media. Malicious code Web 2.0
applications and social networks often sit directly on the desktop, bypassing some of the corporate
gateway controls for example, most social networks support file transfer, quick messaging and email
without importantly going through the corporate email gateway. Social engineering discovering useful
data that can be used for identity theft. Information leakage probably the most visible threat to
corporate and the one that tends to make newspaper headlines. Information will leak naturally from
organisations, but social networking can make it very easy, and once the information enters the social
network, it is almost hopeless to retrieve it. Legal liabilities dealing with harassment, regulatory
oversight, ensuring that privacy obligations are being observed. External attack perhaps a more subtle
form of attack, using social networking as a way to extract information that can be used to commit
fraud. Harassment by tacitly permitting social

Comparing Loman And A Raisin In The Sun
A Life Lived by Half Although it is overlooked the majority of the time, a woman s underlying
sacrificial struggle, lived and experienced by approximately half of the human population, has been
covertly eminent. Women must confront within themselves the expectations and viewpoints of society.
Both Arthur Miller s Death of a Salesman and Lorraine Hansberry s A Raisin in the Sun provide
coinciding portrayals of women by explaining their societal roles, handling of circumstances,
character, and external depictions. In terms of being categorized as female, a woman must manage
both the circumstances at hand and her societal roles. Willy Loman, an arguably proud man,

Although they adamantly strive to be independent and liberated individuals, women are not liberated
at all because [they] talk about it too much (Hansberry 64). Women themselves divulge their own
weakness because they formulate a false notion of autonomy. Their error is that they prefer a feeling
of liberation rather than liberation itself. Despite being subject to men s mistreatment and life s
suffering, a woman will sacrifice and do anything for her family (Hansberry 75). Men have at many
times verbally abused women and suppressed their opinions, but that does not impede women from
sacrificing everything for the people they love. Women are portrayed positively because they display
strength and perseverance. In contrast, Willy Loman considers his wife a burden when he expresses
the idea that the woman has suffered (Miller 99). Women are now portrayed negatively because they
are described as weak and fragile. This portrayal is unjustified because Willy Loman has had more
lamentations while Linda Loman has defended his social standing. Although providing a portrayal for
women is largely a subjective evaluation, one cannot deny a woman s character and sacrifices. A
Raisin in the Sun and Death of a Salesman contain reasonable depictions of the struggle that a woman
undergoes as she contends with her identity. As works that essentially describe features associated

Essay on Reasons to Stop Fighting Aganist Terrorism
For more than a decade US troops are fighting against terrorism in Middle East especially in
Afghanistan. Soon after the worst terrorist attack in the history of United States occurred on
September 11 2001, War of Terror began. President Bush declared war against terrorist groups like Al
Qaeda and Taliban that rooted in Afghanistan. The war just did not disturb the families of the troops,
but to all Americans and Afghanis. Every hours tax payers are paying millions of dollars for the war.

The vanishing of trees has led to severe droughts in Afghanistan. In past three years the groundwater
level has fallen down by 1.7 4.6m. The drought has severely affected the agriculture. The less

significantly due to the leakage. Kandahar s network that serves 30% of the city six hour supplies
loses 70% of water through leakage (UNEP). As a whole, Afghanistan only uses only one third of its
potential resource. Unproductive practice of water usage leads to the water scarcity in Afghanistan.
Environmental conditions of Afghanistan have made its citizens life miserable. The credit goes to the
Taliban and also the United States government. Instead of sending more troops to fight against
Afghanistan, more scientist and researchers should be sent to improve the environmental conditions.
Use of harmful weapons resulted in depletion of the natural habitation deforestation. US government

Informative Essay On Caffeine
Caffeine. From your morning cup of coffee to the pain relievers for your headache, nearly 90% of
Americans consume it daily, making it America s most popular drug. Caffeine is the most widely used
stimulant around the world and present in many different products including coffee, tea, energy drinks,
chocolates, and over the counter medications. Caffeine is a stimulant to the central nervous system
that can cause physical dependence, but doesn t threaten the health of the consumer the way addictive
drugs can. Caffeine is associated with the long term effect it has on sleep. It has properties similar to

health benefits. Coffee has become important to us on so many levels and there s no signs its cachet is

production of baristas for use at home. There has been an escalating popularity in homebrewing

Home Rule As A Force Of Unity And Division Of Irish...
Discuss Home Rule as a force of unity and division in Irish political life during the period 1886 to
1921.
The home rule question played a prominent part in Irish history for over 40 years. Home Rule, the
ideology that a country under a colony would rule itself from home, caused bitter political and social
divisions throughout Ireland. Whilst the division between nationalists and unionist became rife, Home
Rule unified many that were willing to fight for Ireland s cause.
In Ulster there was a sectarian rivalry between Protestants and Catholics. The secret ballot act of 1872
and the Reform act of 1884 reduced the political power of protestant and they felt threatened. From
1885 to 1886, Home Rule became a greater possibility for Ireland, unionists and Protestants became
more restless and agitated. Divisions emerged in politics and in 1885 the Irish Loyal and Patriotic
Union were set up to fight Home Rule. After the general election of 1885 divisions were further
polarised between unionists and nationalists. The electorate was divided into the Home Rulers and the
unionists. The Orange Order was revived and it unified Protestants of all classes against Home Rule.
Many Protestants became a member of the Ulster Loyalist and Anti Repeal Union which was
established in 1886. The Conservative Party in Britain established an alliance with unionist. This
unification was set up to protect the interests of the British Empire. The Conservatives believed that if

Liberty Was Not Absolute For Anyone In The Beginning Stages
Liberty was not absolute for anyone in the beginning stages of America. An anonymous author wrote,
God gave mankind freedom by nature and made every man equal to his neighbor. Unfortunately, for
the African American slaves, women and the Native Americans, freedom was hard to obtain until the
American Revolution changed the principals of independence.
African Americans have an extraordinary past that includes the lifestyles before slavery, during
slavery, and the beginning of the abolition and petitions which lead to their freedom. Many people are
unaware of the African American lifestyle before slavery took place. Much like the Europeans,
African Americans lived similar lifestyles with homes and families, rich and poor classes, enjoyed ...

The new independence talks about having freedom and unfree labor but that s not the case for African
Americans. The abolition and emancipation was a slow process because veterans of the war were
promised 300 acres of land and a slave. This made the process difficult for whites to accept the fact
that if the slaves were granted freedom, they would possibly have their land taken as well as their
slaves. Another possible cause for the slow start of slave freedom is that all the founding fathers
owned slaves which then made people think that it s okay to own slaves as well. Slaves began to run
away from their masters to British lines and would try to pass as freeborn. General Henry Clinton
offered sanctuary to any slave that escaped to British lines. Soon, Northern states and the upper parts
of the south began emancipation of slaves. Free communities started to emerge which led to families,
schools, churches and leaders to grow and live. Finally, African Americans had their freedom back and
began to start a community.
Women before the American Revolution were viewed as weak, less important and not as intelligent as
men. The rights and freedom of women were nonexistent; women couldn t vote, own property, sign
contracts and/or wills or divorce their husbands. The man of the family had total power and authority
over their wives and children. The common role for a woman was to cook, clean, sew, take care of the
family garden and care

Driving Cars Should Be Allowed On Our Roads
I support that self driving cars should be allowed on our roads. Think about riding in your car without
being paying attention to all the details on the roads. Think about leaving work exhausted and get into
your car, push a button, type your home address and the next thing you know you are in your parking
at your house. Let s think about that last party when you had that extra glass of wine, and you are
alone staring at your car wondering how you will get home. The self driving car is the solution to
those struggles that we all face at any time in our lives. The future of moving people and goods will
bring as new transportation technologies, an these technologies will make it possible to move faster
and safer than ever before, but law and regulations and rigorous planning need to take place at the
same paste as these technologies. The self driving cars are coming on our roads and I can t wait to that
day when they will not be fiction but a fact. Self driving cars if allowed will make life easier to
commuters and will reduce the mortality rate due to road accidents. Most of the roads accidents are
due to reckless driving and drunk driving. According to the International Organization for Road
Accident Prevention (IORAP), 1.3 million road deaths occur worldwide every year and more than 50

Essay on Amy Tan’s A Mother’s Tongue
Amy Tan s A Mother s Tongue
The purpose of Amy Tan s essay, Mother Tongue, is to show how challenging it can be if an individual
is raised by a parent who speaks limited English (36) as Tan s mother does, partially because it can
result in people being judged poorly by others. As Tan s primary care giver, her mother was a
significant part of her childhood, and she has a strong influence over Tan s writing style. Being raised
by her mother taught her that one s perception of the world is heavily based upon the language spoken
at home. Alternately, people s perceptions of one another are based largely on the language used.
Tan was born to a pair of Chinese immigrants. Her mother understood English extremely well, but ...

This was because her mother s version of English and its modified rules caused Tan to be confused on
some of the questions.
Tan employs cause and effect when she is talking about her experiences with IQ tests and the SATs.
The fact that her mother spoke English the way she did made it very difficult for Tan to envision what
the test was asking, as with the questions where she could not identify one singular correct answer. In
her experience with language, maybe she had heard her mother would say something a certain way,
even though, technically, it was not grammatically correct. Her perceptions of things, specifically the
rules of language, were different because of the language used at her home.
She also incorporates problem and solution when she is describing how she had to talk for her mother.
Her belief is that people will not take you seriously if you do not speak proper English, and to prove
this, she shows how her mother encountered that kind of attitude often. Tan describes how she had to
call the stockbroker because her mother was concerned about not getting a check, and how the
hospital would not look for a lost CAT scan until Tan was called to mediate. Even though the mother
speaks English, Tan still needs to act as a translator.
Compare and contrast comes in to play at the very beginning of the essay when Tan is describing her
mother listening to her giving a lecture.

Even though Bahrain tended to be more progressive than many Middle Eastern countries in its attitude

Making mistakes is one of the most essential things of human life. Everybody makes mistakes
whether it be during work, school, or even at home. Lewis Thomas emphasizes the fact that everybody
does make mistakes, but it s the step the person takes after they make the mistake that is crucial.
In the very beginning of the essay, Thomas indicates, Mistakes are at the very base of human thought,
embedded there, feeding the structure like root nodules. As people know, plants need nitrogen for
successful growth. Root nodules enable nitrogen‐fixing bacteria to convert atmospheric nitrogen into a
form that is available for plant growth. Root nodules are essential for the proper growth of a plant just

People think that the less mistakes a person makes, the better off they are, which isn t true at all. But
people don t understand that that is the only way we learn. After a test, some teachers give the tests
back to the students so they can see what they got wrong. When they see what they got wrong, they
can figure out what they got wrong and they can focus on improving their knowledge on that topic. If
students never see the test, they will never know what they got right or wrong so they might go on
thinking something is right when it really isn t. My AP US history teacher, Mr. Tubbs makes all the
students do a succinct test analysis after every test. The test analysis is supposed to consist of things
you did to study for the previous test, reflection on your t4est scores, and study habits you ll improve

The During The Reconstruction Era
During the Reconstruction era which occurred after the Civil War there was animosity between the
states as well as the debate over how freed slaves should be dealt with in terms of becoming citizens
with the same rights as the Constitution provided for whites. The government had to come up some
type of conditions which would attempt to allow the rebellious southern states back into the union.
During this time period President Abraham Lincoln appointed provisional military governors to
oversee the re establishment of the southern states into the union as well as a functioning government.
Yet, during the late 1800 s the Republicans ruled Congress and made efforts during the Reconstruction
end to ensure that everyone had the same equal rights by passing the Civil Rights Bill to ensure that
everyone had equal rights. This also led to questions as to what to do with the recently freed blacks.
The main problem was with the Southern states and getting them to except black, so the government
implemented laws and Constitutional Amendments which helped the federal government with the
enforcement of equal rights which would give blacks in the south the rights to hold office and vote.
This leads us to the freeman s Bureau which was also a part of the Reconstruction Act. The
Reconstruction act of 1867 required southern states to except and ratify the 14th Amendment granting
equal protection for the freed blacks, and the 15th Amendment guaranteed the right for blacks to vote.

Overview Between Phonetics And Phonology
At the very beginning, I want to sheds the light on the definition of both Phonetics and Phonology.
Phonetics is considered the study of sounds of any language, it relates to the mechanism of how
sounds are produced and the way of speech sounds production. Phonology studies how those sounds
are put together to create meaning. It studies the rules of language that govern how those phonemes
are combined to create meaningful words. Hereunder detailed features of each branch of linguistics
are explained.
On one hand, Phonetics is talking about the physical aspect of sounds; it studies the production and
the perception of sounds, called phones. Phonetics is the term for the description and classification of
speech sounds. Sounds within phonetics are divided into vowels and consonants. Vowels are
embodied in the letters (i e o a u). Whereas, consonants letters are embodied in the rest set of English
language alphabets. Vowels and consonants describe the articulation of English language. Whereas
there is another branch of phonetics called Acoustic phonetics that is related to the study of how the
sounds are transmitted, in other words the journey of sound from the mouth of the speaker tills the ear

Factors That Might Have Led to Changes in the Price of Gold
Set out what happened to the price of gold in 2008 and 2009. Discuss the factors that might have led
to changes in the price of gold in 2008 and 2009. In 2008, the gold market dropped from the high of
$1,035 to the very low $900 level. This was due to investor meltdown where investors were selling
whatever they could to recoup their losses in other markets. More so, in America, many investors had
paid from only a 10% deposit up to a 50% deposit, on the shares they owned,so when these share
prices dropped more than 10% to 50% investors lost 100% of their capital. There was a low demand
for gold so in the demand and supply of economics law, the price of gold dropped and its quantity
became less. Investor s selling of investments made price plummet even lower, triggering other
selling, causing investors to eventually sell their gold and silver too. As a result, the gold prices
plummeted until the it reached the low of $690. The cheap price that gold reached attracted other
investors and made it climb up gradually but surely to $878 in 2009. After the so called investor
meltdown , street smart investors picked gold up and made the price rise again. (GoldSeek (26
December 2008 ).

Twice? Three times? Does it end? The colloquialisms in the poem only further denote the inextricable
link of consumerism to relationships. When it is linked this closely to people, the very nature of their
interaction is shaped into a shallow never ending cycle of meaningless expression. The falseness of
communication today is directly linked to the consumerist lifestyle and has been increasing since the
late 1880 s. Clancy of the Overflow not only depicts the city as a giant symbol of materialism, but also
portrays the townsfolk as having eager eyes and greedy stating that they have no time to grow, they
have no time to waste . This statement is indicative of the busyness of people s lives and negligence of
other humans. Similarly, when Paterson wrote As they shoulder one another in their rush and nervous
haste he shows the carelessness of people affected by consumerism in this era, which has only
increased from the time of Paterson to the time of Dawe, and furthermore to present day. What can we
do to change? What can we do to stop this perpetual chain of meaningless things, people and

Cleofilas Is A Feminist Analysis
In Mexican culture, women are expected to marry a man then stay at home to care for the kids while
the husband is at work. Women are taught to be dependent on a man in their lives, thus they never
really learn what it is to be feminist. This is very similar to what Cleofilas believes, which she learned
from her family and telenovelas. Therefore, Cleofilas does not understand feminist ideologies and
wants to marry a man to care for her. Although from her background, Cleofilas is clearly not a
feminist as she endeavors to make a home, she is able to observe or visit the feminine perspective
through her struggles.

It was the famous archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans who made the astounding discoveries at Knossos in the early 1900 s that introduced to the world the fascinating and wonderful sophistication of these early Greeks (Britannica Encyclopedia). The history of the island has been molded by its proximity to the Aegean Sea. Its geographical location gave it control over the sea and the lucrative trade routes. The Minoans traded with Egypt, the Levant, the Aegean, and beyond to Italy, and Sicily. The great Minoan civilization of Crete formed around palaces such as those at Knossos, Phaestus, Ayia Triada, and Tyliossos. The extremely important Palace of Minos at Knossos gives us crucial evidence of a continuous architectural brilliance and highly developed artistic sense, bringing together all aspects of architectural style, art, and innovation during the Minoan period between 1700 BCE and 1580 BCE and continuing until the invasion of the Achaeans in the 12th century BCE (Britannica Encyclopedia). Students Low Enthusiasm And Attitudes Of Research Methods Stansbury and Munro (2013) and Ciarocco, Lewandowski and Volkom (2013) conducted two different studies after observing students low enthusiasm and attitudes of research methods, a course that is often seen as the hardest and most important class for a psychology undergraduate. In response to this, both researchers decided to create hands on approaches for teaching research methods in an effort to promote student engagement in the classroom. Both studies are structured around the understanding that when students are engaged in conducting research, their appreciation of the material will increase, and so will the comprehension of the material at hand. Additionally, the two were studies fundamentally unable to use random assignment to conditions considering the inevitable negative affects it would have on the students initial feelings of the class. • 9. Theory of Operant Conditioning Theory of Operant Conditioning Instrumental conditioning, otherwise known as operant conditioning is a theory that B.F Skinner came up with and is defined as a learning process by which the consequence of an operant response affects the likelihood of the response recurring in the future. Basically, operant conditioning is a stimulus response prototype that when reinforced, conditions individuals or organisms response to a desired behavior (Huitt, W., Hummel, J., 1997) Our behaviors are shaped to be desirable or undesirable through reinforcements, punishment and extermination. Overall, operant conditioning is seen to be voluntary reaction that precedes the stimulus and the reinforcement. Classical conditioning is one of the techniques used in behavioral training. The process of classical conditioning works with the introduction of neutral stimuli before the original stimulus and the same reaction is elicited from the organism even without the presence of the original stimulus. The Pavlov dog salivated with every sight of food as the original stimulus for the salivation. When a neutral stimulus was introduced like a bell that was rang each time before it was fed, the dog started salivating at the ringing of the bell even before the food was availed. Positive and negative reinforcement Introduction of the negative reinforcement to construe behavior entails removal of an unfavorable events or outcomes after the display of a behavior. In August 1940 German bombers suffered heavily in daylight even though they were escorted. This helped to confirm to Bomber Command that night bombing was the best policy. Bomber Command flew night missions over Germany during the winter of 1940 1941 in the belief their bombs had fallen within about 300 yards of their targets. This figure was plainly wrong, a new assumption was made. The R.A.F decided the average error was closer to 1000 yards, which meant that Bomber Command could not be expected to hit targets as small as oil facilities, until they had been equipped with vastly improved navigational aids. • 13. Environmental Effects Of Desertification Background: Desertification is the degradation of land and soil in dryland ecosystems caused by both the climate and human activities. In the year 2000, one third of the population of the earth dwelled in dryland ecosystems, and drylands are 41% of world s land. The effect of desertification is massive because of the amount of people that live in affected areas. Drylands facilitate 44% of the food production in the world and 50% of livestock, so these ecosystems are a very important source of resources. 2.6 billion people depend of the food developed in drylands and many of those people have jobs making the food. 52% of the land is being affected in some way by degradation because it removes the moisture that is needed to grow or herd food. Around 800 million people are going hungry and around 80% of these people are small land owners or they do not own any land and are very poor. This means that those small land owners might not have any land in the end because of the deterioration of healthy soil. Land degradation also effects water quantity and quality. Clean water is one of the most important resources in the world, and desertification eliminates that resource. 74% of those in poverty are directly affected by land degradation. 10 20% of drylands are degraded already. The places most effected by desertification are sub Saharan and Central Asia drylands. Desertification occurs for various reasons. At this point, this was the third block of the day, only a block before lunch. The desks were arranged in a small circle with an outer circle, for this purpose, the class was participating in a Socratic circle. In a more student based activity for the class period, Ms. Coppola allowed the students a decent amount of control over the discussions directions. The students had a Do Now question when they first walked into the door before the Socratic circles began. This was a text based Socratic circle, using the novel Nineteen Eighty Four by George Orwell. One group went first in the inner circle to discuss and the outer circle watched, taking notes. Then the two groups switched roles. Ms. Coppola incorporated two unique aspects to her Socratic circles that I had never seen before. One of the students was the discussion leader, leading the discussion and asking questions to the rest of the circle. Another addition in the Socratic circle was that were hot seats where the outer circle is allowed to sit in an unoccupied seat in the inner circle to offer their opinion on a particular topic in the discussion for extra credit, before going back to their seats in the outer circle. King Leopold s Ghost Sparknotes King Leopold s Ghost tells the narrative of the struggles experienced by those in the Congo following the discovery of rubber and the privatized funds of a King Leopold of Belgium. Recounted by Adam Hochschild, a lecturer at the University of California Berkeley s School of Journalism, it gives light to the stomach turning truths of imperialism. King Leopold s Ghost falls to critics in some aspects, as highlighted in a review by Lysle Meyer. Meyer, works for the African Studies and has written a book regarding this specific subject. The novel, which successfully exposes the horror of King Leopold s rubber empire in Congo, lacks sources as well as contains simplistic prose that can seem dull at times. Meyer s review of the novel agrees that the book is well informative; however, Meyer also states that without due sourcing the book falls short of expectations for the average historian. One can easily agree with this point, as there is quite obviously no footnotes. Meyer makes this point stating . . . the publisher has eschewed footnotes, presumably in deference to the average reader s reputed aversion to them. ( Review 2 ). In an attempt to ... Reid Essay It may seem implausible that someone would confess to a crime they did not commit, but it does happen, and the prevalence of such confessions occurs at a much higher rate in juvenile populations. Aggressive interrogation methods, like those used in the Reid Technique, lead to a greater probability of false confessions among juvenile subjects than if those techniques had not been used. In a study completed by University of San Francisco law professor and renowned false confession researcher, Richard Leo, 35% of the 125 proven false confession cases he sampled included confessors who were under the age of 18 (2004). Before we examine what it is about this technique that prompts false confessions, we must first outline the systematic, nine step process developed by John E. Reid Associates nearly forty years ago. The Reid Technique is the most widely adopted interrogation method used by branches of law enforcement, the military, government entities, as well as private enterprises. To say that it is the unchallenged gold standard would be an understatement, and understandably so. If the main goal of an interrogation is to win a confession from the accused, then there is no greater tool. Instead people should die with dignity and let them be loved unconditionally by God until the end of earthly life. Therefore Roman Catholics oppose euthanasia, this is an absolute view. The Economic Causes Of The First Anglo-Dutch War In the seventeenth century, overseas trade was vital for the European countries as the circulation of currency and commodities allowed nations to function. Rommelse claims in his article that this interdependence of nations caused by necessary trading lead to a rise in economic influence in politics which in turn lead to economic conflicts becoming wars between nations. I agree with his point, and believe this fact is best exemplified in Anglo Dutch relations. The first two Anglo Dutch Wars were dominated by economic conflict, but after the treaty of Breda in 1667, economic interests showed a less prevalent effect in Anglo Dutch political relationships and the third Anglo Dutch war was unique as its cause was purely political. The English Civil War began the conflict that would lead to the first Anglo Dutch war. The Parliamentary forces were largely protestant, and the parliamentary forces reached out for an alliance with the Dutch Republic to form a bond with the only protestant nation. Rommelse states that the Dutch republic realized that an alliance with England would allow for English aggression in claiming previously Dutch only trading routes. This fact is further supported by an article written by J.E. Farnell. The protestant forces now in control of England were angry at the rejection of an alliance, and in 1651 passed the Navigation Acts with the sole purpose of hurting Dutch trade with the rest of Europe. • 27. Home Rule As A Force Of Unity And Division Of Irish... Discuss Home Rule as a force of unity and division in Irish political life during the period 1886 to 1921. The home rule question played a prominent part in Irish history for over 40 years. Home Rule, the ideology that a country under a colony would rule itself from home, caused bitter political and social divisions throughout Ireland. Whilst the division between nationalists and unionist became rife, Home Rule unified many that were willing to fight for Ireland s cause. In Ulster there was a sectarian rivalry between Protestants and Catholics. The secret ballot act of 1872 and the Reform act of 1884 reduced the political power of protestant and they felt threatened. From 1885 to 1886, Home Rule became a greater possibility for Ireland, unionists and Protestants became more restless and agitated. Divisions emerged in politics and in 1885 the Irish Loyal and Patriotic Union were set up to fight Home Rule. After the general election of 1885 divisions were further polarised between unionists and nationalists. The electorate was divided into the Home Rulers and the unionists. The Orange Order was revived and it unified Protestants of all classes against Home Rule. Many Protestants became a member of the Ulster Loyalist and Anti Repeal Union which was established in 1886. The Conservative Party in Britain established an alliance with unionist. This unification was set up to protect the interests of the British Empire. An anonymous author wrote, God gave mankind freedom by nature and made every man equal to his neighbor. Unfortunately, for the African American slaves, women and the Native Americans, freedom was hard to obtain until the American Revolution changed the principals of independence. African Americans have an extraordinary past that includes the lifestyles before slavery, during slavery, and the beginning of the abolition and petitions which lead to their freedom. The new independence talks about having freedom and unfree labor but that s not the case for African Americans. The abolition and emancipation was a slow process because veterans of the war were promised 300 acres of land and a slave. This made the process difficult for whites to accept the fact that if the slaves were granted freedom, they would possibly have their land taken as well as their slaves. Another possible cause for the slow start of slave freedom is that all the founding fathers owned slaves which then made people think that it s okay to own slaves as well. Slaves began to run away from their masters to British lines and would try to pass as freeborn. General Henry Clinton offered sanctuary to any slave that escaped to British lines. Soon, Northern states and the upper parts of the south began emancipation of slaves. Free communities started to emerge which led to families, schools, churches and leaders to grow and live. Finally, African Americans had their freedom back and began to start a community. Women before the American Revolution were viewed as weak, less important and not as intelligent as men. The rights and freedom of women were nonexistent; women couldn t vote, own property, sign contracts and/or wills or divorce their husbands. Think about riding in your car without being paying attention to all the details on the roads. Let s think about that last party when you had that extra glass of wine, and you are alone staring at your car wondering how you will get home. The self driving car is the solution to those struggles that we all face at any time in our lives. The future of moving people and goods will bring as new transportation technologies, an these technologies will make it possible to move faster and safer than ever before, but law and regulations and rigorous planning need to take place at the same paste as these technologies. Essay on Amy Tan’s A Mother’s Tongue Amy Tan s A Mother s Tongue The purpose of Amy Tan s essay, Mother Tongue, is to show how challenging it can be if an individual is raised by a parent who speaks limited English (36) as Tan s mother does, partially because it can result in people being judged poorly by others. As Tan s primary care giver, her mother was a significant part of her childhood, and she has a strong influence over Tan s writing style. Being raised by her mother taught her that one s perception of the world is heavily based upon the language spoken at home. Alternately, people s perceptions of one another are based largely on the language used. Tan was born to a pair of Chinese immigrants. Her mother understood English extremely well, but ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This was because her mother s version of English and its modified rules caused Tan to be confused on some of the questions. Tan employs cause and effect when she is talking about her experiences with IQ tests and the SATs. The fact that her mother spoke English the way she did made it very difficult for Tan to envision what the test was asking, as with the questions where she could not identify one singular correct answer. In her experience with language, maybe she had heard her mother would say something a certain way, even though, technically, it was not grammatically correct. Her perceptions of things, specifically the rules of language, were different because of the language used at her home. She also incorporates problem and solution when she is describing how she had to talk for her mother. Her belief is that people will not take you seriously if you do not speak proper English, and to prove this, she shows how her mother encountered that kind of attitude often. Tan describes how she had to call the stockbroker because her mother was concerned about not getting a check, and how the hospital would not look for a lost CAT scan until Tan was called to mediate. Even though the mother speaks English, Tan still needs to act as a translator. Compare and contrast comes in to play at the very beginning of the essay when Tan is describing her mother listening to her giving a lecture. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The During The Reconstruction Era During the Reconstruction era which occurred after the Civil War there was animosity between the states as well as the debate over how freed slaves should be dealt with in terms of becoming citizens with the same rights as the Constitution provided for whites. The government had to come up some type of conditions which would attempt to allow the rebellious southern states back into the union. During this time period President Abraham Lincoln appointed provisional military governors to oversee the re establishment of the southern states into the union as well as a functioning government. Yet, during the late 1800 s the Republicans ruled Congress and made efforts during the Reconstruction end to ensure that everyone had the same equal rights by passing the Civil Rights Bill to ensure that everyone had equal rights. This also led to questions as to what to do with the recently freed blacks. The main problem was with the Southern states and getting them to except black, so the government implemented laws and Constitutional Amendments which helped the federal government with the enforcement of equal rights which would give blacks in the south the rights to hold office and vote. This leads us to the freeman s Bureau which was also a part of the Reconstruction Act. Phonetics is considered the study of sounds of any language, it relates to the mechanism of how sounds are produced and the way of speech sounds production. Phonology studies how those sounds are put together to create meaning. It studies the rules of language that govern how those phonemes are combined to create meaningful words. Discuss the factors that might have led to changes in the price of gold in 2008 and 2009. In 2008, the gold market dropped from the high of $1,035 to the very low $900 level. This was due to investor meltdown where investors were selling whatever they could to recoup their losses in other markets. More so, in America, many investors had paid from only a 10% deposit up to a 50% deposit, on the shares they owned,so when these share prices dropped more than 10% to 50% investors lost 100% of their capital. There was a low demand for gold so in the demand and supply of economics law, the price of gold dropped and its quantity became less. Investor s selling of investments made price plummet even lower, triggering other selling, causing investors to eventually sell their gold and silver too. As a result, the gold prices plummeted until the it reached the low of $690. The cheap price that gold reached attracted other investors and made it climb up gradually but surely to $878 in 2009. After the so called investor meltdown , street smart investors picked gold up and made the price rise again. (GoldSeek (26 December 2008 ).
