Rationale for Annual Program Monitoring 
• Incremental quality enhancement of academic delivery 
over 5-year cycle 
• Program and institutional accreditation 
• International and national reputation 
• Government, public and student confidence 
ESG*: 
‘institutions should have formal mechanisms in 
place for the approval, periodic review and annual 
monitoring of their programs and awards’ 
* Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance in the European Higher Education Area
Key Points: Annual Program Monitoring 
• Academic quality ‘health-check’ for all taught programs/courses 
• Faculty-driven 
• Focus: evidenced delivery of graduate attributes, program aims and 
learning outcomes 
• Identification of good practice – for dissemination 
• Identification of areas for improvement, modification and renewal
Key Points: Annual Program Monitoring 
From approved Academic Quality Framework, should consider, as a minimum: 
o student performance and progression data 
o student feedback on faculty and the program 
o faculty feedback on the program and student performance 
o comments of external examiners and/or other external/internal reviewers
Reporting Structure 
2 formal meetings: 
o APM - Sep/Oct: reviews 
previous year and 
develops action plan 
o Progress Review - 
Feb/Mar: review of 
progress against action 
plan; amendments as 
required
Sample Template: Annual Program Monitoring Report

  • 1. Annual Program Monitoring Policy Academic Quality Enhancement Office of the Provost November 2014
  • 3. Rationale for Annual Program Monitoring • Incremental quality enhancement of academic delivery over 5-year cycle • Program and institutional accreditation • International and national reputation • Government, public and student confidence ESG*: ‘institutions should have formal mechanisms in place for the approval, periodic review and annual monitoring of their programs and awards’ * Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance in the European Higher Education Area
  • 4. Key Points: Annual Program Monitoring • Academic quality ‘health-check’ for all taught programs/courses • Faculty-driven • Focus: evidenced delivery of graduate attributes, program aims and learning outcomes • Identification of good practice – for dissemination • Identification of areas for improvement, modification and renewal
  • 5. Key Points: Annual Program Monitoring From approved Academic Quality Framework, should consider, as a minimum: o student performance and progression data o student feedback on faculty and the program o faculty feedback on the program and student performance o comments of external examiners and/or other external/internal reviewers
  • 6. Reporting Structure 2 formal meetings: o APM - Sep/Oct: reviews previous year and develops action plan o Progress Review - Feb/Mar: review of progress against action plan; amendments as required
