KIHEFO is a local non-profit organization in Kabale District, Uganda dedicated to community development. It operates a medical clinic, HIV/AIDS clinic, nutrition center, and other projects focused on healthcare services and community development. Adolescent reproductive health is a major issue in Uganda, as 25% of the population is between 10-19 years old. Issues include lack of awareness, peer pressure, poverty, and cultural norms. Sexual activity begins early, and coercion, unwanted pregnancies, and STIs are problems. KIHEFO aims to address the integrated problems of disease, poverty, and lack of education through an integrated approach of healthcare services and community development projects.

• Sexual activity: Half of Ugandan girls and
nearly 4 in 10 boys aged 15 to 19 have ever
had sex. Among 18 to 19 year olds it is 77% for
girls and 59% for boys

• Sexual coercion: In a study among high school
students in Kabale district 31% of females and
15%of males reported having been forced to
have sex
• Contraception: Only 19% of females and 42%
of males use any method of contraception.
The condom is the most commonly used
method. More than half 53% girls and 63%
boys know where to get a condom

• Marriage: Young people are waiting longer to
get married in 1995 50% of 15-19year olds
and 11% of boys had ever been married
• By 2000-2001 the proportions had dropped to
32% and 7%respectively.
• By age 20 75 % of women have been married
compared with 25% of men. 26% of girls and
5% of boys have ever had a child

• Abortion: Local studies suggest that abortion
occurs among adolescents although national
data do not exist because most abortions are
performed under unsafe conditions as
abortion is illegal in Uganda
• STIs: According to data from one teenage
center in Kampala 64% of all clinical problems
at the facility were related to STIs
