Maternal health refers to the health of women during pregnancy, childbirth, and after birth. A woman dies from complications during childbirth every minute, with about 529,000 deaths each year mostly in developing countries. Some common causes of maternal death are haemorrhage, infection, obstructed labor, hypertensive disorders during pregnancy, and complications from unsafe abortion. Maternal mortality has declined by nearly 50% since 1990 but falls short of the UN target.
