The document provides tips for effectively analyzing a topic and searching for relevant information. It recommends identifying the main concepts and keywords in the topic, connecting keywords with Boolean operators like AND and OR, and using search tips like truncation symbols, wildcards, and phrase searching. Following these four steps of analyzing the topic, identifying keywords, linking keywords, and utilizing search tips can help obtain a more targeted and successful search.
Definition is a way of giving or explaining the meaning of an abstract term or a concept. It is derived from the Latin word finire (to limit); and de(from), the explanation it gives is limited only to what the reader need to know about the term to avoid confusion with other word belonging to the same class to where the target word belongs.

In the research process you will encounter many types of resources including books, articles and websites. But not everything you find on your topic will be suitable. How do you make sense of what is out there and evaluate its authority and appropriateness for your research?

As faculty blogger Michael Arnzen describes it, The Difficulty Paper
comes out of the idea that by grappling with intimidating readings, students can master their anxieties about (and become more confident reading) academic texts, and that – through writing out their thoughts (e.g., taking a metacognitive approach) – they can identify what they already know and what they still need to find out.
The document is a description of the adaptation of Rizzi-Salvatori's "difficulty paper" for use in small groups after students viewed each others videotaped interactions with standardized patients in a required ethics course in a Doctor of Pharmacy program.
Why and how to effectively search for information in search engines, databases and catalogues. The presentation covers how to identify keywords and why. Why and how to use boolean operators, phrase and field search and truncation or wildcard. Why eliminate stop words from search statement.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2. Analyse your topic
•
•
•
•
Look for the main idea
Identify keywords for these concepts
Connect your keywords with AND or OR
Use search tips like truncation and wildcard
symbols to improve search
– Spelling, different endings
3. Look for key concepts
• Typing the whole question or topic into the
search box may not find the most relevant
material
• What are the KEY concepts?
• HOT TIP : Do not use instructional words as
concepts. These only tell you what to do and
what type of material to look for. (e.g.
“discuss”, “give examples”)
4. Identify keywords
• Get a clear definition of the concepts
– These definitions help identify alternative
keywords
• Think of synonyms for the keywords (use
textbooks, dictionaries, thesauri)
– Even if the words do not have exactly the same
meaning, they still do describe similar or related
concepts
5. Link your search words with AND or
OR
• Combine synonyms with “or” – this will
broaden your search
– it will look for ANY of the keywords
• Combine different concept with “and” – this
will narrow your search
– It will look for all concepts together
6. Use truncation or wildcard symbols or
phrase searching
• Truncation symbol * is useful for searching singular, plural or
variations of a term
– Variations of a term do not need to be repeated
– E,g. Aborigines, Aboriginal, Aborigin*
• Increasing the number of results the wildcard symbol is used
– Example is a question mark?
• E.g. with different spellings e.g. organi?ation, wom?n
• Use inverted commas for phrase searches and makes the search
more relevant
– e.g. “tourism industry”
• decreases the number of results
7. Summary
• Whether you are searching the library
catalogue, databases or the internet – these
4 steps will help you search more effectively
1. Look for the main concepts in the topic
2. Identify keywords for theses concepts
3. Connect your search words with AND or
OR – the Boolean operators
4. Use search tips – if they are appropriate
– to improve your search
