2. The magazine is well known
and because of this the title
can be hidden by a image
and people would still know
what magazine it is
The cover has a close up image of
the chosen artist. The pose that the
artist is pulling gives off the
impression that the aim of it is to
make the artist look “sexy” or
“seductive” this could then lure men
to become more of the audience for
the magazine. The intention of the
simple white background behind her
means that all the attention is on
her, this also doesn’t make the
magazine look messy or
unorganised. The font that they
have chosen to use is bold and goes
by the theme of black and white.
Furthermore, Rolling Stones uses
the same colours throughout the
cover (red, black and white) this ties
the whole cover together, making
the magazine look more structured.
The magazine uses
rhetorical questions and
quite informal language in
some places, this fits in with
the targeted audience of 18-
34. However, it uses
language that everyone can
understand, for example no
abbreviations are used so
the older generations can
understand what’s being
said on the front of the
magazine. The mode of
address here is a direct shot
of Rihanna.
Rolling stones follows
the codes and
conventions of every
other magazine and
puts its barcode on
the cover
The magazine doesn’t only
focus on music, they focus on
wider issues such as politics
and so on.
The magazine is very diverse
and has the likes of Rihanna,
the pope and Barack Obama
posing for the magazine.
3. The masthead is made to
look like shattered glass to
give an edgy feel or rebellious
vibe.
The cover image is a mid shot of
one of the band members that is
included in the magazine. This
makes the reader focus on her
face as well as the body language.
Again like the magazine Rolling
stones, the background is simply
white meaning all the attention is
on the artist. The colours that are
being uses are black and yellow,
this gives off a dangerous feel to
it due to caution signs being that
colour. The pose that the artist is
pulling implies that she is apart of
a rebellious act and is trying to
show the readers of the magazine
that she doesn’t care about what
others think as she is not trying to
look seductive or “sexy” like
Rihanna was on the cover of the
Rolling Stones. The font that the
editor of the magazine chose to
use is somewhat graffiti like
which again fits into the theme of
the genre of music being
rebellious.
The magazine is obviously
targeted at a young audience
due to the amount of
competitions and free posters.
The magazine uses
abbreviations such as “yer”
and doesn’t necessarily use
formal language, instead it
uses the type of language
that everyone can
understand making it quite
informal. However, you can
tell that the magazine is
directed at a younger
audience as it advertises a lot
of competitions that the
older generation may not
want to join. Also, the
magazine uses rhetorical
questions to interact with
their audience. The mode of
address here is a direct shot.
Kerrang follows the
codes and conventions
of every other
magazine and puts in
the right corner for the
readers to see.
4. The quote displayed in the
left hand corner “the
most hated man on the
internet” is known as a
lure as the readers are
interested or shocked by
the title, which makes
people want to buy the
magazine to find out what
the quotation is meant.
The layout is very organised
and neat and has more
words than pictures,
making the magazine
appeal to those who like to
read a lot and makes the
magazine have a wider
audience rather than just
being for those from the
ages 15 and upwards.
The editor hasn’t
followed the codes and
conventions and added
an editors letter to the
readers, however in the
left hand corner, the
editor mentions who
took the pictures for the
front cover and the back
cover.
The colours Rolling
Stones has chosen
purple and pink,
really compliment
each other making
the magazine look
organised and more
eye catching
towards the readers.
5. The lure for this contents
page is the quote “win!
All time low tickets and
meet and greet!” this
lures readers especially
those who are fans of the
band to read more of the
issue due to the fact that
there is a way in which
they can connect with the
band members face to
face.
The layout is organised with
titles and page numbers.
Again, the layout has more
words than pictures
meaning those who like to
read appeal to it as well as
an older generation.
Kerrang follows the codes
and conventions and has an
advertisement in which
people can buy their
magazine.
Kerrang follows the codes
and conventions and has
an editors letter. The letter
seems pretty informal due
to how personal it is and
how the editor ended the
letter with “James” making
the readers feel like they
know him personally.
Kerrang uses the same
colours as their front
cover: black and yellow.
The yellow seems to be
the bold colour that they
use for titles.
6. Rolling stones uses
the colours black
and white and uses
a close up of Adele.
Rolling Stones uses a
stand first to
introduce the article.
The layout is basic and simple, yet neat. Almost the entire page is covered up with Adele’s face making the readers focus on her.
The mode of
address is indirect.
Big headline
7. Kerrang uses red
and black and a
long shot of Mark
Hoppus.
Kerrang uses
a stand first
to introduce
the article
and a quote
from the
article.
The artist is made to look
bigger than the dinosaur
next to him to imply that
his band is big and more
scarier than a T Rex.
The graphics here is meant to
look like a claw, again
implying that the band is
dinosaur like/scary.
The font that they have used again is big and
looks quite “rough” this is to make the band look
scary or intimidating.
8. From the two magazines that I have analysed, I have learnt that Kerrang and Rolling Stones are two very different magazines.
Both target different types of audiences, for example some may argue that the Rolling Stones magazine is more targeted at
sophisticated people who find politics as well as music interesting whereas Kerrang targets a much younger audience who are
only interested in music and meeting their favourite artists/bands. Also, Rolling stones are a lot more diverse than Kerrang as
they have a variety of people who pose for their magazines, whereas Kerrang only has those who mainstream in the genre of
rock. When making my magazine, I want to do it in a similar style to Rolling Stones as I like the layout and the way the cover
isn’t busy or unorganised. However, I want to do the same sort of audience as Kerrang targets more of my age. I like the way
that Kerrang has huge headlines, bright colours and different graphics on their articles to fit the topic they are talking about and
in Rolling Stones, I like the simplicity of it all and how sophisticated it looks. I’
