Analysing Mixmag Magazine…
Contents… This page is quite different to the front cover- it has a black background with white text. It’s a good idea because the font stands out, but it doesn’t show consistency throughout the magazine, which could look unprofessional. Having a “VIP” section gives the reader the impression that it’s exclusive to them so they should read it or they could be missing out. Underneath “Features” there are teasers as to the articles that will be found in this issue. This should encourage the reader to read on. It also changes it’s style of font because the cover contained ‘bubble-like’ font, whereas the contents contains a harsh font with connotations of the army and forces. This layout of the page is very simple. There is an image on the left, and the contents list on the right. The space along the bottom is a list of tracks available on the free CD given. It does keep slightly similar in the sense that it uses a bright coloured picture taking up most of the page. The image is quite ‘busy’ so it captures the readers eye instantly because there’s a lot to take in. The language used is standard English and it’s almost like they are having a conversation with you, “Step away from the DJ booth!”. This makes it easier to read as it feels less formal. The image that was found on the front cover is shown on the contents page too, this can help the reader find what they are looking for. The numbers are in a bright yellow which stands out and makes it easier to find the page.
Double Page Spread… The magazine has once again stuck to the idea of bright colours- this appears to be one of the few ideas of consistency seen. However, the bright colours used don’t match the contents or the front cover. “Welcome to Lame Academy” is a good use of play on words. It’s the opposite of ‘Fame Academy’ so you question what the idea of ‘Lame Academy’ is- contrasting? By having a yellow background, the audience is also drawn to the heading because the yellow doesn’t match the rest of the page. The ‘celebrity’ in the image is seen wearing sun glasses and a suit case, insinuating she’s going on holiday. This is reinforced by the huge yellow circle in the top right- it’s a classic way of drawing the sun. The leading text summarises the article but in questions- this lets the audience make a decision on whether they want to continue reading the article or not. The image takes up most of the background on both pages. This gives the impression that the image is more important than the article- from looking at the image you gain a rough idea of what it’ll be about. Having “Welcome” as the first word is inviting for the reader and implies that they are being welcomed so it almost becomes personal- this will become a good read for the reader.
