The document summarizes and compares the contents pages of four music magazines: Q Magazine, Mojo Magazine, and Kerrang Magazine. It notes key elements of each contents page like mastheads, images, article previews, and section organization. Q Magazine's contents page features the main artist image and article preview. Mojo Magazine has a minimal design with one large artist image. Kerrang Magazine has a cluttered layout with many sub-images and sections to preview the magazine's rock genre content.
This is Tom's answer to question 1 of the evaluation for our music magazine. The question is, "In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge codes and conventions of real media products?".

2. Q Magazine
The masthead is the simple but recognisable ‘Q’ symbol
which is on the front cover and used throughout the
magazine. The colours on the masthead are always the same
with a bright red background and white letter. This makes it
easy for the reader to spot. The mast head is located in the
same place in every issue of the magazine - top left corner.
Because this is the same in every issue it makes the magazine
look more professional and adds continuity to it. The rest of
the contents page also follows the colour scheme with red
and white headings.
The main image in this contents page is the artist that the
main article is about. Alongside this image is a direct link to
the article that the image is centred around with a pull quote
to give the readers a taster of the article. The image takes up
the majority of the page to show the importance of the
article. The mise-en-scene of the image follows the genre of
the band, The Courteeners are an indie band so neutral,
plain, dark colours are used. The colours also fit with the
colours used in the colour scheme of the magazine with a lot
of black so no colours clash - this makes the magazine look
more professional.
3. Q Magazine
The feature and regular articles are separated into
different sections in this magazine. The regular articles
are the articles that are repeated in every issue of the
magazine - these are located in the same place of every
issues contents page. By having the regular articles it
makes it easier for the reader to navigate around the
magazine. The feature articles and the regular articles
have a small amount of information which sums up
what the article is about so the reader knows what to
expect before reading it.
There is a part of this contents page where the reader
can find the review section. This is on every issue of
the magazine and follows the same scheme of the rest
of the page. There is also a sub image which is smaller
than the main image and adds more detail to the
section. It also makes the reader more likely to look at
the section and follow the lead on the article.
4. Mojo Magazine
The mojo contents page does not have a ‘contents’ title,
instead it just has the Mojo masthead in the same location
as on the front cover just at a reduced size. Underneath
the masthead it has all the locations this magazine is
produced. The page is very neat and minimalistic which
draws attention to Florence Welch who features on the
contents page. As the background is plain grey it makes
her bright red hair stand out more. Unlike most contents
pages there is only one image instead of having lots of sub
images. In this image, the artist has her back arched and
the text bends around her body making it look like she is
pushing the text around her with her body. This contents
is separated into the feature articles and the cover story
and does not include regular articles which is unusual for
a contents page. At the bottom of the page there is a pull
quote from the article of the artist with a direct link to the
page the article is on. This gives the reader a taste of what
is in the article so they are more likely to read it and can
find it easily.
5. Kerrang Magazine
Kerrang is a rock magazine so the contents page is quite
cluttered to add to the layout of the magazine. There is
one main image on the page with lots of sub images. Each
of the sub images have direct links to the pages that the
article is on. The main image is of one of the bands one of
the articles is about. The mise-en-scene of the image is
the band all wearing dark, neutral colours with long hair
which is typical of the genre. There is also a large Union
Jack flag as the band is a classic rock band and the Union
Jack flag symbolises this. Overlaying the main image is a
preview of a double page spread that is in the magazine.
The page is separated into seven sections to make it
easier for the reader to navigate around the page and
magazine. There is also a splash on the page saying
‘5Posters’ this is in bright red and is big to draw attention
to it.
