2. About the cathedral
The construction of the Cathedral of Santa Maria de Burgos began in the 13th century.

windows…
The cathedral was started in the year 1221 and completed in 1567.
3. Style
It is an evolution of the Gothic style.
It has all the history of the gothic art exposed in the architecture.
Although its style is Gothic, it has also Renaissance or Baroqe decorative elements.
The construction was made with limestone.
4. Fernando III and the bishop Mauricio
They were the ones who wanted the Burgos Cathedral to be built in the 1221 to
replace a previous 11th century Romanesque style cathedral.
5. Declared as a national monument
It is the only cathedral that has this UNESCO distincion independently without
being attached to the historic center of the city.
6. Restoration
Due to the detachment of a figure from the facade in 1994, it was also decorated and
restored at the same time.
In total, they have invested more than 30 million euros.
It is considered the most expensive restoration of a European monument.
7. How many people visit the cathedral?
It is visited by approximately 200.000 visitors a year.
An interesting curiosity is that onTuesday afternoons from 16:30 to 18:30
admission is totally free.
