2. Where are they located ?
Both monasteries are located in the Sierra de la Demanda, in the upper reaches of the Cárdenas River. The
town of San Millán de la Cogolla belongs to the Nájera region, in La Rioja. The Suso and Yuso monasteries are
one kilometer apart: Suso (which means "up") is on the mountain, and Yuso (which means "down"), is in the
lower area.
3. Monastery of Suso
Suso Monastery invites us to take a journey
through 1,000 years of history. In this monastery,
the story of a monk who wrote the first words in
Romance, a language that, evolved, we now know
as Castellano or Spanish, was known.
4. Monastery of Yuso
The Yuso Monastery, built to expand the
Suso Monastery in the 11th century, stands
out for its large dimensions. It was rebuilt in
the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, and it
combines different styles: mainly
Renaissance and Baroque.
It also contains important and historical
documents and artistic and cultural
elements.
5. SINCE WHEN AND WHY ARE THEY AT
UNESCO?
The Monasteries of Suso and Yuso de San Millán de
la Cogolla were declared a World Heritage Site by
UNESCO on December 4, 1997, for historical,
artistic, religious, linguistic and literary reasons as
we have mentioned before.
6. IMPORTANCE OF THE MONASTERIES AND
WHY THEY ARE FAMOUS
Suso's cultural importance is manifested in the collection of manuscripts and codices that came from his desk.
Monastery of Yuso have got scientific importance has also weighed, as it houses the headquarters of the
International Center for Research on the Spanish Language (Cilengua). The Yuso Monastery is also characterized
by its different architectural styles.
The La Rioja monasteries of Yuso and Suso, in San Millán de la Cogolla, have been recognized by UNESCO for the
"sustainability" they make between tourism and religious life, as announced by the president of the regional
government, José Ignacio Ceniceros.
7. TOURISM (Suso and Yuso)
There are no exact data on visits, but we are sure
that there will be a lot of tourism due to the history
of the monasteries. And the best thing is that the
tickets are not very expensive so they are accessible
to all types of audiences. It costs 4€ for Suso and 7€
for Yuso, in which kids ticket is free.
