Project of Erasmus+ Program "European Citizenship. All equal. All Different. Many capitals, many citizens. All equal, all different". Monument - Burgos Cathedral
2. The Cathedral of Saint Mary of Burgos is a
Gothic Roman Catholic church which is
devoted to Virgin Mary. It was under
construction from 1221 to 1567.
In the Self - governing Region of Castilla y
León, in the northern Iberian Peninsula,
the Burgos Cathedral is situated in the
city's old district.
Its exquisite architecture and distinctive
collection of artwork, which includes
paintings, choir stalls, reredos, tombs, and
stained-glass windows, serve as a thorough
illustration of the development of the Gothic
style.
3. INFLUENCE
• At various points in time throughout history, Burgos
Cathedral has had a significant impact on the evolution of art
and architecture.
• The Cathedral was crucial in spreading the styles of
French Gothic art from the 13th century to Spain.
• One of the most thriving schools at the end of the Middle
Ages was founded by the internationally significant
Cathedral's workshop in the 15th and 16th centuries.
• Throughout the 19th century, the Cathedral also functioned
as a model; for instance, the French architect Garnier was
motivated by the staircase designed by Diego de Siloe when
he built the Opera in Paris.
4. The legacy of the Reconquista and
Spanish unification is closely tied to Burgos
Cathedral, which includes the graves of El
Cid and his wife Doa Jimena.
Under the main altar, a number of early
members of the Castilian royal family are
buried.
The creation of this important royal
monument in Spain is connected to the
memory of Saint Ferdinand.
