Introduction
"U.Lab introduces a
framework and method
called Theory U, which
allows individuals,
groups, and larger
systems to suspend
habitual ways of paying
attention, connect to
deeper sources of
knowing, and explore the
future you want to create
through rapid-cycle
prototyping."

people in the system operate." from "Introduction:

Intention Statement - Community Building

Intention Statement - Community Building
1 - Current situation : The key
challenge we're currently “up
against” is . . .
. . . learning how to "co-initiate",
"co-sense", "connect with
source", "prototype" and "co-
evolve" innovations that foster
our community's health and well-
being.
6. Intention Statement - Community Building
. . . building
organizational integrity
and capacity to
effectively innovate
within the community.
1 - Current situation
: The key challenge
we're currently “up
against” is . . .

7. Intention Statement - Community Building
Stakeholders
could include
academic
institutions like
VCU and societal
organizations like
TOW.
2 - Stakeholders : How
might others (i.e.
stakeholders) view
this situation?

8. Intention Statement - Community Building
3 - Intention : What future are we
trying to create?
“The purposes of the Corporation shall be
non-profit, and exclusively that of
organizing and facilitating member and
stakeholder relations serving to secure
and further enhance a broad spectrum of
operations to benefit Roanoke’s
communities and citizenry. These
purposes shall include, without limitation,
functions and activities that contribute to
the city’s physical, educational,
ecological, economic, and psychosocial
health and well-being.”
9. Intention Statement - Community Building
3 - Intention : What
future are we trying to
create?
While the respective
members of this group, at
one time or another, have
each professed their
dedication to securing the
community's health,
happiness, and well-being
. . . well, what does that
mean? Or, just how do we
go about doing that?
13. 13
Intention Statement - Community Building
We need to "let go" of . . .
4 – Learning Threshold:
. . . limitations,
constraints, barriers or
obstacles imposed by, or
inherent with, operating
systems 1.0 through 3.0
if pathological or
otherwise problematic.
14. 14
In addition to "structure-stages" (i.e. traditional, modern,
postmodern, and integral), "state-stages" or "vantage
points" (i.e. gross, subtle, casual, witnessing, and non-
dual) some current reading (DiPerna's - "Streams of
Wisdom") incorporates "states" (i.e. gross, subtle,
causal) in a three dimensional model for (integral)
spiritual development.
My question is . . . how does a facilitator help attune
group members to their shared, collective experience,
in respect to deepening subtly AND increasing
complexity?

5 – Help : Where do
we need input or
help?
Developing the
practical use of
technical resources
would help us work
more effectively with
each other.

5 – Help : Where do we
need input or help?
Broadening our
organizational capacities
could help us further
develop community
resources and practice.

Intention Statement - Community Building
5 – Help : Where do we
need input or help?
There are a number of
steps to be taken on the
immediate horizon:
1 - Complete and file
Articles of Incorporation.
2 - Design Moodle
curriculum and coursework.
3 - Initiate community-
engaged research.
18. 18
▪ 1 - Listen to your heart : Connect with your heart to what
you're hearing
▪ 2 - Listen to what resonates : What images, metaphors,
feelings and gestures come up for you that capture the
essence of what you heard?
Stillness
19. 19
Mirroring: Open Mind, Open Heart, Open Will
1 – Coaches share
what
images/metaphors,
feelings, or gestures
arose for them.
2 - Having listened to
the coaches, Brian
reflects what he
heard in response.
20. 20
Generative Dialogue
1 – Reflecting on these
remarks move into
generative dialogue on
how these
observations can offer
new perspectives on
his situation and
journey.
2 - Go with the flow
of the dialogue. Build
on each other's ideas.
21. 21
Closing Remarks
1 – By coaches.
2 - By Brian: How do I
now see my situation
and way forward?
3 - Thank you: An
expression of
genuine appreciation
to each other.
