independence from Great Britain through war
tactics and courage
French and Indian War
• Great Britain defeated France (very costly war)
• Led to heavy taxation of 13 colonies
Slavery
• Slavery is very popular in the South
• Helped grow crops and other difficult tasks
Taxation
• Great Britain is heavily taxing colonists to make up for losses
during the war
• Leads to colonists not purchasing imported goods
• The year is 1765, you are twenty years old.
You own a home, a slave, and have a family
• You are very angry about the heavy taxation &
mistreatment from Great Britain
• The War has began and you have all been
enlisted and will fight for your country to gain
independence!
Proclamation of 1763
• Prohibited settlement past Appalachian Mountains
• Colonists felt the couldn’t expand (Manifest Destiny)
French & Indian War
• Left Britain with a large debt
• Led to higher taxes for people in the 13 colonies
Townshed Acts
• Taxed items like glass, paper, and tea
• Angered colonists
• Over debate on what soldiers will obtain each
weapon, you are being asked to pick a number
#1-#3

British walked in lines,
extremely organized
Led to difficulty reloading
& firing weapons
Easy target for
outnumbered 13 colonies
Option #1: You chose to walk in a straight line
along with a group and have all died
Option #2: You effectively hid in bushes,
scattering yourself from the enemy, taking out
many British soldiers
Option #3: You left the scene in terror
Directions: Pull
out sheet of
paper and
crumble it into a
ball
• Declared our Independence from Great Britain
on July 4th, 1776
• Signed by many men including Thomas
Jefferson (added life, liberty, & the pursuit of
happiness)
• Jefferson got this from John Locke’s Idea of
Natural Rights
• Comes from John Locke (highly regarded
Enlightment thinker)
• Believed Natural Rights were right given to
EVERYONE
• Right to Life, Liberty, and Property
• Believed gov. should be overthrown if they
don’t protect these Natural Rights
• This time period of marvelous thinkers
became known as the Great Awakening
What helped the outnumbered colonists pull
through?
When was the Declaration of Independence
Signed? (Date & Year)
What are your Natural Rights according to John
Locke?
How did Thomas Jefferson incorporate this into
the Declaration of Independence?
• A commander has not returned home after
the war
• Foul Play has been suspected and you have all
been found guilty in the lower court and have
been sentenced to life in prision
• The Supreme Court will now hear your case
thanks to Judicial Review
1 3
2
• Option 1: The Supreme Court has
unanimously found you all NOT guilty
• Option 2: You have narrowly survived life
behind bars, as the court found you NOT guilty
• Option 3: The court will keep its decision of
guilty, you will begin your sentence
immediately
