Adaptation Of The Film Industry
Article Critique: Adaptation in the Film Industry
From the very outset, it is worth noting that the article s central theme is the practice of
adaptation. Adaption is used in the article to describe the practice of transforming an already
existing work of art to come up with a new form of art. In essence, adaptation involves developing a
new work of art (such as a film) from an existing one (such as a novel or play). The new work of
art is said to have transformed or adapted the original. As such, it is inevitably referred to a
reproduction or adaptation of the original. In this sense, the focus of the article is on how different
artistic and literary works have been transformed into films through adaptation.
It is very evident that the author of the article was very passionate about the subject of adaptation.
This can be deduced from the manner in which he approaches the subject. Subsequently, it is only
logical to conclude that the issue of adaptation was a very interesting one at the time the article was
written. If for nothing else, then there is a high possibility that adaptation was an issue of great
concern (and even a source of controversy) among people in the film industry. Otherwise there may
have been come competing interests at stake. These competing interests may have pitted those
opposed to adaptation and those in support. Although the article does not say for real, it is highly
probable that those in the film industry supported adaptation while those in

The Works Of Vincent Dance Theatre
In this essay I am going to be analysing the works of Vincent Dance Theatre and how they have
used and practised different theories in their work. I am also going to be exploring different cultural
concepts from the work and how they relate to society. The director of Vincent Dance Theatre is
Charlotte Vincent, the founded the company in 1994 and has continued to create such interesting
and powerful work which involves a very wide range of different concepts and cultural meanings.
Charlotte Vincent is a very creative practitioner and is highly influenced by the experiences and her
own journey through life to where she is now. She puts all her knowledge and understanding into
creating her engaging and powerful work.
Charlotte Vincent is one of the UK s leading female choreographer/directors (The Observer). VDT
is an international ensemble of multi tasking collaborators who devise interdisciplinary
performance to challenge conventional values in dance and gender politics. http:/

One of the many works of Vincent Dance Theatre is a piece called Motherland , this piece explores
gender very deeply and everything that a women/man/boy or girl may face for example,
motherhood, pregnancy, periods and more. It is about the gender people are born into and what
they may face in their journey of life. Another concept of this performance is feminism, the
characters show a clear vision of this cultural concept that society is effected by.

Lockout And Tagout Procedures
Lockout/Tagout is a safety procedure that is used to make sure that dangerous machines are
properly shut off and not started up again until the completion of maintenance or servicing work
is finished. Lockout /tagout procedures are important to employees and employers. The purpose
of a lockout/tagout program is to prevent injuries and unnecessary expenses to a company.
Lockout/tagout procedures and work instructions are created and implemented by employees and
employers. Lockout is the isolation of energy from equipment or a machine with a physical lock.
De energization is a process that is used to cut off a source of energy or separate a system from its
source of energy, in order to stop the discharge of that energy. By de energizing the system, you are
eliminating the chance that the system could accidentally cause harm to a person through
movement, or the release of heat, light, or sound. De energizing a machine... Show more content on

Companies can be fined if they do not properly train their employee s lockout/tagout procedures.
Companies can also be fined if those procedures are not followed correctly. Over hundreds of
workers die in the U.S. from being caught in machinery. OSHA will inspect a company and if
OSHA observes a machine being serviced and it is not properly locked and tagged, OSHA may
give them a fine. OSHA penalizes companies for not complying with Lock Out; these fines
exceed millions of dollars per year. Unfortunately, many workers do not lock out properly. OSHA
reports that many tagout procedures performed improperly is the fifth most violated standard of

Department Business Targets Into Our Daily Routines
department business targets into our daily routines. Using the MBO methodology of collaborative
planning GTPLS Gippsland operation has developed an activity based strategic plan that focuses
on our efforts towards the delivery of specific outcomes. These outcomes will in turn, lead to the
achievement of our goals and reaching the company s vision.
The success of this plan / strategy relies on a commitment to implementation and regular monitoring
of our progress no matter what we strive to achieve with the business planning process it will
become an exercise in theory unless there are mechanisms by which progress towards our stated
outcomes are reviewed and measured. To that end, the introduction of performance measurement is
the key to this plan and The Company s financial management (including contracted accountant)
will be responsible for collation of data and monitoring of business plan activities for presentation at
proposed monthly management meeting s with the key performance information being formally
reported to management and GTPLS staff at that time.
While dedicated planning is essential, rigid adherence to a faulty plan will lead to poor
performance or failure. A key aspect of successful planning is ongoing evaluation and flexibility,
and it is intended that this plan will be reviewed on a regular basis. This will ensure that all key
business targets and activities remain appropriate mechanisms for achieving both company s sales
targets and strategic goals.

External Auditors Independence Case Study
Why is it important for external auditor to be independent?
Throughout the years, banks, shareholders, possible investors and creditors always relied on the
financial statements produced by a company. Since the management of a company is producing
these documents it has been assumed that the managers may act dishonestly so that their
performance looks better. To monitor the company s performance better the directors along with the
shareholders employ external auditors to check all these financial statements for both intentional
and unintentional errors. Therefore, external auditors have no motivation to produce dishonest
reports, hence they are regarded as being truly independent. But can they actually be independent
when their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Deloitte was providing Adelphia with external Auditfor more than 15 years, but suddenly (in the
end of 2001) they stopped working, claiming that the information provided by Adelphia was

negligence, deception and failure to reveal fraud. According to the SEC (2005), the results are
Deloitte Touche LLP has agreed to pay $50 million to settle charges stemming from its audit of
Adelphia Communications Corporation s fiscal year 2000 financial statements. Although Deloitte
wasn t pronounced guilty, it is obvious that they could have easily detected and disclosed the
omissions and fraud that they could have found. If that had happened, probably the scale of this
catastrophe would have been smaller and Adelphia wouldn t have gone totally bankrupt. This case
inevitably shows us the importance of independent auditing.
Another threat to the independence of the auditors is a phenomenon which took place around 3 or
4 decades ago. During that time the number of firms which required audits stopped expanding, the
codes that prohibited advertising accounting firms were abolished, which enabled all these firms to
steal market from each other. Furthermore, a lot of audit bodies engaged into consulting,
bookkeeping assistance, investigation and tax advices. This trend resulted in

The Severing Nature Of Sin In Jenson s View Of God
Like any relationship, the relationship between God and his people requires input from both
parties. One of the ways to positively engage in the relationship is through prayer, however, one of
the ways to both actively and negatively engage in this relationship is through sin. Many historical
and social developments have shifted sin into the realm of ethics, however, for Jenson, it is a
theological concept. It is a theological concept in the sense that it relates to the active relationship
between man and God, which stems precisely from being made in the image of God. As a result,
sin is what breaks up this active relationship and community that God has established. Jenson
achieves this conception of sin by once again analyzing God s identity in scripture, specifically his
active... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sin is not only the rejection of one s relationship with god, but a rejection of one s relationship to
other human beings as well. The aforementioned good moral life is not an individual goal that is
separate from God or other human beings, it is a collective goal that forms a community that this
sin destroys. The severing nature of sin stems directly from the story of Adam and Eve: their
betrayal of God through manifests itself in original sin and relationship severing consequences,
there is a division between humans, in which the woman is directed to be ruled by the husband,
and a division between man and God, in which the people are banished from the garden of Eden
and its many blessings. However, sin is only a rupture, not a complete dissolution, of one s
relationship with God and thus, it is mendable and redeemable. Jenson states that what reunites us
with God is not any of our particular works or actions, rather what unites us with God is our trust in
what happens in Christ. It is precisely this faith and only this faith, this trust, that touches our lives
to the divine drama (Jenson

technique/method investigates the variation in experiments and generally approach of system,
acceptance aims and parameters have been significant in improving product quality worldwide.
Highest possible performance in this method is obtained by determining the optimum combination
of design factors. The present work focused by using orthogonal arrays (OA) and analysis of
variance (ANOVA). Orthogonal arrays are used to get optimal values with the effect of graphs and
analysis of variance was employed to investigate the characteristics and experimental results
provided the effectiveness of this approach. This technique has improved quality of design and

Analysis Of The Poem The Golden Sunshine
In a bright morning, the sun shone through the window in my bedroom, quietly. The golden
sunshine, brings me a sense of freshness, comfort and happiness. After half day of paper work, in
the afternoon I slowly came to the woods that situated not far away from home. Perhaps because
the noon drizzle, the air became fresh and sweet, filled with a touch of grass and the fragrance of
wild flowers. In the wood, the green leaves of these ancient pagoda tree brings a trace of
coolness after the breeze passing by. I walk on the earth, the green grass is so delicate, like the
famous artist Spring try to make more people understand that spring is coming; with her most
precious color rendering of this vast expanse of grassland, emerges a thriving scene.
Chirps in the peaceful forest, who is whistling? I guessed right, is the robin who fly around the
bright blue sky; probably beside it is the lady robin he like. Beautiful rhymes, like spring water
flow out. At this sweet moment, I think the chirps is better than all the music in our world. Apart
from the bird call, these agile squirrels and rabbits passing the branches cheerfully; the beauty
butterflies play in between the flowers and the bees are busy gathering nectar for the delicious
honey. I sat on the grass, greedily breath in the mellow soil, and at this point, my mind emerged the
night last winter when I was passing this forest on the way home......

Major Career Milestones
The bible suggests that the sins of the father can haunt multiple generations of a family before
finally being resolved. But this was written long ago, when people generally did not live very
long and did not have the incredible resources modern peoples can access in terms of knowledge,
material resources and medical care.
Today, many of us are able to live down any childhood baggage we started out with and
eventually create the life of our dreams. For some people, age 50 is about when all the work of
their early adult life seems to pay off, giving them much more of the life they desire rather than the
one their parents wanted for them.

For men, this can mean changing the diapers of the grandkids even though they never changed the

For women, it can be an excellent time to go back to school, start a business or otherwise launch
a serious career knowing they can give more of a commitment to work than they could when the
children were little. It can be a time when they feel more comfortable investing in themselves in
some way, having filled some internal quota for caring for others. They can feel psychological freer
to live a more empowered life and can feel less pressure to people please.
Those who stop to assess the journey they have already taken and make some plans for the years
ahead are more likely to get the most out of this important milestone. Counting what we have
already done can be freeing and empowering. Planning what comes next can help make the years
ahead an adventure to embrace.
For modern people, age 50 can be an important milestone. Those who take the time to look back on
their lives and to also make plans for the years ahead are generally more satisfied with this

To What Extent Did Hitler Manipulate the German Population...
To what extent did Hitler manipulate the German population into following his Nazi regime?
From 1933 1945 Adolf Hitler rose to the peak of his political power, by creating a stronghold
over the German people. The use of oratory skills, in conjunction with his knowledge and use of
propaganda and his suppression of details of the Holocaust, created a vibe of electric excitement for
Germany. (Fritzsche, 1998) His targeting of the German minority and his radical push for anti
Semitism allowed Hitler to corrupt a weak and innocent nation. Manipulative leadership was a
dominant force in the birth of his extremist beliefs and propagation, though this was assisted by the
responsiveness of the negligent minded German population to his plans.... Show more content on

Thousands upon thousands of Berliners cheered and celebrated as Hitler spoke of his new
ambitions and plans for Germany. The crowd, which was labelled by a fellow member of the
group as deafening , were excited by the Hitler s enthusiasm; this had been lacking under the
reign of Weimar democracy. (Fritzsche, 1998) The editor of Berlin s Nazi newspaper, Der
Angriff, Joseph Goebbels, remarked: Uprising! Spontaneous explosion of the people.
Indescribable! (Fritzsche, 1998) Even though later in history we see Hitler s ultimate motive to
be his own rise in political hierarchy, his speech introduced himself to the German public as a
populist and a revolutionary political genius. (Grunfield, 1974) Hitler endeavoured himself to
all economical classes, whether it be the bourgeoisie, peasantry or the aristocracy; to them it
appeared Hitler s priority was to move Germany out of the current economic crisis and strive to
develop Germany into a world superpower. The passion illustrated in Hitler s goals was
prevalent in his speeches, which led to the acceptance of a nation and the new title of our Fuhrer
(Grunfield, 1974) Hitler s use of Nazi propaganda was a major part of his scheme to empower
himself to a weak nation; it gained him respect from the German people and endeared himself to
them. The key, well documented, emphasis of the propaganda was the mass slaughter of all

Summary Of The Short Story OfThe Father And Lamp At Noon
Throughout years within society, people have grown accustomed to latching on to others
characteristics and gradually learning from them. Regardless of the situation, people will naturally
gravitate toward those with traits they favor and try to recognize their own values that bring them
down. In the short stories of The Father , by Hugh Garner, and Lamp At Noon , by Sinclair Ross,
both authors clearly exemplify how one person can be influenced by another, while then creating a
better understandingof their own faults and amending themselves from those negative traits. While
among those close to them, people tend to become influenced by those same people and slowly
gain a better understanding of their traits and motivations. Consider the short story, Lamp At Noon ,
by Sinclair Ross. Paul, who had faith, dreams, and plans all invested into his farm is confronted
by his wife and her aspirations for the family. After an argument with her over whether they
should stay in the dust ridden farm or start a new in the city, Paul finally comes to an
understanding that, She looked forward to no future. She had no faith or dream in which to
make the dust and poverty less real. He understood suddenly (Ross 8). From this context, the
reader is able to visualize how Ellen s words have reached Paul, and how he is able to bypass his
wants and understand hers. Another short story that illustrates this same idea is The Father by
Hugh Garner. The character of John Purcell profoundly makes a fool of himself and his son
without even realizing the damage of his actions, and as a result, he see s that his, boy was
sobbing silently, his thin shoulders shuddering beneath his blazer. Suddenly he (John Purcell) was
ashamed by the enormity of his act, and had to prevent himself from taking his son on his knee
and comforting him as he had done when the boy was younger (Garner 75). Due to the influences
of his son s attitude toward the situation, John comes to his senses on the scene he has created and
is able to understand his son s embarrassment and shame that he s brought upon him. The short
stories The Father by Hugh Garner and Lamp At Noon by Sinclair Ross portray how one person
can not only be influenced by

Mary Todd Lincoln s Life
One cannot say that Mary Todd Lincoln did not suffer great loss in her lifetime. From a young
age, she became familiar with loss when she lost her mother at the age of six (Baker 2002).
Some people looked at her as crazy and thought she should be locked up in a mental hospital like
her son had done to her. If they took the time, though, to read through her great losses and look
from her perspective, maybe they could realize that she was just a mourning daughter, sister,
mother, and wife. Mrs. Lincoln was raised in a wealthy, southern family(Baker 2002). Her family
represented the slaveholding gentry of a new community, although she was uncomfortable with the
southern slaveholding ways (Baker 2002). She lost her mother at the age of... Show more content on

This caused her family to look at her as a traitor, they supported the Confederates and her
husband and her supported the Union (Norbut 2008). She was also looked at as a traitor from
the rest of the United States, the Northerners saw her from the South, and easterners saw her as a
uncouth westerner (Norbut 2008). When Willie died in 1862 from typhoid fever, Mrs. Lincoln
didn t get any sympathy from the rest of the United States because every mother out there was
potentially losing their sons (Baker 2002). This caused problems between the married couple
because Lincoln mourned his death more privately in Willie s bedroom as she took it more as a
personal blow, he saw it as a shared grief of the parents and families whose soldier sons and
husbands he had sent off to the war (Baker 2002). Mrs. Lincoln never did anything bland, including
mourning the death of Willie ( Family: Mary Todd Lincoln). She had an eye for fashion, even
during the period in 1862 and 1863 when Mrs. Lincoln was in mourning for her son Willie and
wore only black, she managed to go further into debt for new clothes ( Family: Mary Todd
Lincoln ). Mrs. Lincoln shed her mourning attire a little over a year later, but she did start reaching
out and seeing spiritualist ( Family: Mary Todd Lincoln ). She would invite them to the White
House for sГ©ance circles so the mediums could conduct the call to the dead (Anthony 2014).

The Pressure to Be Perfect
The Bell Jar and Black Swan: The Pressure to be Perfect
In a society where competition among others and influences from the media are becoming
increasingly prevalent by the decade, it is easy for one to feel the extreme pressure to be perfect.
Many individuals face the internal conflict of feeling that they are not adequate enough for various
personal or societal standards, often leading to unhealthy insecurities, mental and emotional
instabilities, and identity crises. Firstly, society s reminders to individuals to reach a superficial
level of perfection create unhealthy stress within oneself, leading to progressive depression.
Furthermore, the even harsher mental and emotional pressures put on by one s loved ones
accumulate to cause ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is the feeling of not being good enough for the world that crushes her self esteem and will to
succeed, as later on she begins to contemplate harming her body and even committing suicide.
The protagonist in Black Swan, prima ballerina Nina Sayers, faces a similar ignition to her mental
instabilities through the pressures of society. In this case, Nina is naturally a perfectionist who
tries to strive in the highly competitive ballet industry, which takes a huge toll on her physically,
mentally, and emotionally. It is evident that throughout the course of Nina s training for her big
debut as Swan Queen in the ballet company s annual production, she is obsessed with the idea of
perfection to live up to society s expectations of what a prima ballerina should be. When the
former prima ballerina of the company, Beth McIntyre, unexpectedly retires, the director,
Thomas Leroy, introduces her to the entire ballet industry at a gala. He announces, But as we
bid adieu to one star, we welcome another! We re opening our season with my new version of
Swan Lake. Taking the role of our new Swan Queen, the exquisite, Nina Sayers (Aronofsky).
This puts Nina under the spotlight and creates very high stakes for her, possibly ones that are too
heavy for such a young girl to handle, as she is now pressured into filling the shoes of a legendary
prima ballerina a symbol of

The Stroop Effect Essay
The Stroop effect is demonstrated by the reaction time to determine a color when the color is
printed in a different color s name. Participants respond slower or make more errors when the
meaning of the word is incongruent with the color of the word. Despite knowing the meaning of the
word, participants showed incapability of ignoring the stimulus attribute. This reflects a clear
instance of semantic interference and an unfathomed failure of selective attention (Stroop, 1935).
In the study of the female chimpanzee Lana, the authors tested the Stroop like effect with an animal
to gather evidence from a nonverbal organism to provide additional information about the role of
compatibility between response latency and performance accuracy. ... Show more content on

Consistent with over selective attention, psychopath offenders displayed reduced Stroop
interference on the separated color word Stroop and picture word Stroop tasks relative to offenders
who were not psychopaths. However, psychopath offenders displayed normal Stroop interference
on the standard color word Stroop. This information suggest a circumscribed attention deficit in
psychopaths that hinders the use of unattended information that is (a) not integrated with
deliberately attended information and (b) not compatible with current goal directed behavior (Hiatt,
Schmitt, Newman, 2004).
In another study, five experiments were conducted to determine if coloring a single Stroop element
reduced automaticity or slowed the processing of a color. The results demonstrated that indeed it
slowed processing of congruent and neutral stimuli more than it slows processing of incongruent
stimuli (Monahan, 2001).
In experiment 1, participants were instructed to press a key to determine if the stimulus was red,
blue, yellow, or green. On the second half of the experiment, the stimulus appeared in grey with
only one colored letter which was positioned randomly. Error rates for the experiment were
below 2.5% for each condition, which is quite low. Experiment 2 was the same as experiment 1
except that there were 114 data collections instead of 288 and there were 36 practice trials instead
of 72. According to experiment 1 and 2 it is suggested that the effect of

Conclusion:
If the enzyme is placed in higher temperatures than its optimal temperature, then the rate of enzyme
activity will decrease or possibly denature. This hypothesis is proven correct throughout the

Jackson Pollock
Prior to the 19th century, artists were often hired to make artwork for the elite and wealthy, as well
as for establishments like the church. Art in this time depicted religious and mythological scenes
that were used to tell stories to the audience. According to The Museum of Modern Art, During the
19th century many artists started to make art about people, places, or ideas that interested them, and
of which they had direct experience. And with the publication of psychologist Sigmund Freud s The
Interpretation of Dreams (1899) and the popularization of the idea of a subconscious mind, many
artists began exploring dreams, symbolism, and personal iconography as opportunities for the

Tutoring in the Lifelong Learning Sector.
In a post 16 educational world, where student retention and achievement are given high priority, the
tutor s role is central to successful learning (Green, 2001, p.1). I endeavour to study my tutorial
practice; analysing a recent one to one tutorial with student X (case study) (Appendix 26). I shall
outline ways of improving my tutorial skills and techniques (Appendix 29) using reflective
practice and feedback from student X in the form of a completed feedback questionnaire
(Appendix 15 and 16). My aim is to develop the necessary pastoral and academic support skills
(Appendix 29) in order to plan and deliver effective one to one and group tutorials for the future.
The tutor s understanding of the various roles they play during a tutorial is vital for effective
student support. This role includes the following: comprehending that the coaching session is
directly linked with teaching; helping students in terms of a particular skill and offering students
general guidance and support linked with friendship. All these characteristics need underlying
strong pastoral elements linked to an academic outcome embedded within the tutorial session, thus

Crohn s Disease And Ulcerative Colitis Case Study
Crohn s disease and Ulcerative Colitis belong to the same disease category, inflammatory bowel

Inflammation takes place just on the surface layer of the intestinal lining. Normally, it begins in the
rectum and then, in a constant way it expands up the colon.

cultural significance and their correspondence to the human brain structure (Table 3). Besides the
physical and musical varieties, he has identified six other types of intelligence: spatial (visual),

Sedimentary rocks are formed over thousands or millions of years as fine particles are compressed

Functionalism And The Sociological Perspective On War
Joseph Valdez
Sociology 100
Professor McCune
August 12, 2017
Sociological Perspective on War War has been going on just about as long as people have been
alive. Whether it is just some cavemen fighting over a fire, or multiple countries going to war for
justice, there has always been some scale of war. I am going to be analyzing way through
functionalist, conflict, and symbolic interactionist perspectives.
Functionalism is a theory of the mind in contemporary philosophy, developed largely as an
alternative to both the identity theory of mind and behaviorism. Its main idea is that mental states
are constituted solely by their functional role. The conflict perspective views the social world as
difficult unfair and unreasonable. This perspective is typically more pessimistic. Symbolic
interactionism is a theory that develops from practical considerations and that alludes to people s
particular utilization of dialect to make images, normal implications, for deduction and
correspondence with others.
The three major sociological perspectives offer some very different views of war and terrorism.
They each have their own opinions and stances that may be controversial, but they all give unique
views on war, past and present. Functionalism emphasizes the usefulness of certain behaviors and
social institutions for many aspects of society. Conflict perspective utilizes the idea of peace, and
how war is a negative thing all around. Symbolic interactionist perspectives can use war as

Robert Nozick s Anarchy, State, And Utopia
In Anarchy, State, and Utopia Robert Nozick uses a famous example of Wilt Chamberlain getting
rich by playing basketball to show how patterned distribution is destroyed by individual transfers of
goods and money. He argues that we should have a free economy in which we each have control
over our holdings without interference from a governmentor anyone else. To argue this he shows
that the alternative to this free economy, patterning our distribution of resources, is unjust because
it causes interference in people s lives.
In this paper I will pose three arguments that this example is faulty because it is oversimplified. I
will argue that it overlooks important moral concerns, specifically reward. I will argue that it makes

to be justly earned, and is justly given since the transfer is voluntary. Because of his popularity
Chamberlain earns more than the other basketball players and more than the average citizen.
Nothing is evenly distributed anymore because he has more of it than others do. The example
shows how free exchange inevitably upsets patterns of distribution. If that free exchange follows
the rules of just transfer then it is just to upset the pattern and presumably unjust to reinstitute

The Impact Of Tourism On The Tourism Industry Worldwide
Responsible tourism/travel is about making better places for people to live in and better places for
people to visit. It also means that you travel lightly, with a small carbon footprint, respecting people
and places, while making a positive contribution where possible. Ecotourism is one of the fastest
growing sectors of the tourismindustry worldwide. It has spawned voluntourism, wildlife tourism
and geotourism (tourism to areas of geological interest.) There s also a growing interest in
sustainable tourism , whereby tourism businesses that aren t essentially nature based. Including
hotels and airlines, are finding ways to operate more sustainably.
Responsible tourism requires that operations, hoteliers, governments, local people and tourists take
responsibility, take action to make tourism more sustainable. The modern version of volutourism
started in the 1960s with the Peace Corps. From its inception, the Peace Corps philosophy was that
volunteers could and should serve their country by living and working in developing countries,
providing aid, and assisting in the peace process by interacting with local cultures.
Since Voluntourism has evolved into volunteer travel and volunteer vacations for the leisure travel

Animal Personality As An Individual s Distinguishing...
Abstract:
Animal personality is defined as an individual s distinguishing pattern of behaviour that remains
consistent over time (Pervin and John 1997). Recently animal personality has become an important
area of research. Psychologist have been interested in the role of individual differences in
behaviour that may reflect temperament or personalities. This line of research has resulted in a
number of studies revealing individual differences in personality traits in such diverse species as
primates, marine mammals, insects, fish, invertebrates, and birds (Gosling, 2001). To add to the
growing literature on animal personality, the personality of five Asian elephants at Melbourne Zoo

The elephants are suffering from a shrinking size habitat due to the rapidly growing human
populations. Majority of the Asian elephant s once spacious habitat has been separated into small
fragments due to human settlements, plantations and large developments such as mines and roads.
The illegal hunting and trade of these critically endangered animals is also contributing to the
decrease in numbers. In Asian elephants, only the male elephants carry tusks, therefore hunting is
aimed at the males only. Not only is the poaching of the males killing a large proportion of the
Asian elephant population but it is also raising a concern about the genetic effects. When these
tusked males are killed, the number in the male population decreases resulting in a skewed sex
ratios. The major concern with this is that it may lead to inbreeding and eventually to a low
breeding success which will then bring down the population number even more.
To help save the Asian Elephant populations, Melbourne Zoo has set up the Cooperative
Conservation Breeding Program. The aim of their program is to create an insurance population of
the species. Since the establishment of this breeding program in 2006, three pregnancies have been
achieved. For these breeding programs to be successful the Zoo needs to set up an environment that
each elephant feels comfortable in.
For an animal to feel comfortable in an environment, the enclosure must be set up so the

Does The Ontological Argument Successfully Show That God...

Does the Ontological Argument successfully show that God exists?
God a being of which nothing greater can be conceived. (Blackburn, S, 1999. Think. New York
United States of America, Oxford University Press Inc. 5:154)
The ontological argument put forward by St Anselm, is based on this definition. The argument,
Anselm s premises, the concept of god being understood, god existing in the understanding and
god necessarily existing in reality, plus conclusion that god in fact exists, can be easily digested
and understood but are also very confusing. In this essay I will argue that the ontological argument
does not successfully prove that god exists as the argument not only contradicts itself but fails to
put forward any solid proof for god s existence. The essay topic above raises two main areas of
attention in need of address. These two areas being; the ontological argument and what it is, and
secondly, whether or not this argument is successful in arriving at the conclusion of god s
existence. To do the latter, I must first state the argument and what it is.
The Ontological Argument states, following the definition of God above, that the concept of God
or, a god, is understood (even by the fool as stated by Anselm) (Blackburn, 1999:154). Therefore as
the concept of God is understood God therefore exists in the understanding (taken as the

Selecting The Next Chapter
Selecting the Next Chapter Eventually, we all reach the age at the end of our high school career
when we have to choose a path. The path that we select will guide each of us to the trail that we
will follow for the rest of our lives. Some of us will choose to go directly into the workforce,
potentially go to a trade school, or even go onto a post secondary education in order to obtain a
degree. What decision we make then determines what the rest of our life will hold, how
successful we can possibly be, our yearly salary, and can introduce us to people who will play
active roles throughout our entire life.
Now, I am a senior in high school, and I have quickly found this decision right on my doorstep.
Over the past few years, I have had my eyes on several different post secondary college options, but
I have narrowed this list quite significantly over the past few months based on factors like their
available majors, the college s size, and the extracurricular activities that are offered by the
institution. With this said, I have selected three colleges that have specifically caught my eye based
on these factors: Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky; Purdue University in West
Lafayette, Indiana; and Saint Mary of the Woods College in St. Mary of the Woods, Indiana.
Majors Of course, when selecting colleges recently, it was necessary to pick those ones that
followed my interest base. Ideally, this would be to obtain a Master s Degree in Science for

Comparing Empathy in Blade Runner and Slaughterhouse-Five...
Empathy in Blade Runner (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep)and Slaughterhouse Five
What does it mean to be human? This is a question that is often asked in literary works. Is it our
intelligence that separates us from being like any other animal on this planet or is it something
else? Perhaps it is our ability to feel empathy for other humans and other forms of life. If this is so,
then how is it that we also have violence and wars where humans hurt and kill other humans? How
is it that humans can hurt animals without a second thought, if it s our ability to feel empathy that
separates us from them? Both Philip K. Dick and Kurt Vonnegut explore these questions in their
novels Blade Runner (Do Androids Dream ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Everyone is a follower of Mercerism, which encourages people to feel empathy for others and for
animals. In this manner, everyone on Earth survives without feeling that he or she is alone. The
main character of Blade Runner is Rick Deckard, a bounty hunter for the Los Angeles police
department. Several androids had killed their owners on Mars and had escaped to Earth. The first
bounty hunter that went after them managed to retire two before being put in the hospital himself.
It was up to Deckard to destroy the remaining six. Unfortunately, the androids who escaped were
the new Nexus 6 types, which looked and acted exactly like real humans. They were even more
intelligent than most humans. The only way to tell them apart from real humans is by measuring
the amount of empathy they can feel, which isn t as great as humans. While hunting these rouge
androids, Deckard s whole perception of what it is to be human gets questioned and he begins to
wonder if there is that much difference between a human and an android.
Slaughterhouse Five, is based on the author s real life experiences in World War II. In fact, chapter
one of the book is all about how Vonnegut is going about writing this novel. The main character of
this book, though, is a civilian named Billy Pilgrim, who through unfortunate circumstances ends
up on the enemy side of the line during the war. He

Logos, Ethos And Pathos In Fish Cheeks, By Amy Tan
Fish Cheeks by Amy Tan tells us about how a young girl discovers that it is okay for your family
to be different and that she should appreciate her family s culture. She learns this after one very
long and embarrassing Christmas Eve supper with the preacher s family. In this story Tan uses
several different times rhetoric devices. She uses imagery, ethos, and pathos. Imagery is used to
give the reader a better description of the story. Ethos and pathos are used when the child and
mother have an disagreement about their emotions and feelings. Her word choice ,diction, in the
story also has an impact on the story. Imagery is the how the describe the story to you to help you
understand what is going on better. Tan uses imagery to give the reader a more accurate
description so maybe the reader can get the same feelings as the guests or the young... Show more

She was pulling black veins out of the backs of fleshy prawns. The kitchen was littered with
appalling mounds of raw food: A slimy rock cod with bulging eyes that pleaded not to be thrown
into a pan of hot oil. Tofu, which looked like stacked wedges of rubbery white sponges. A bowl
soaking dried fungus back to life. A plate of squid, their backs crisscrossed with knife markings
so they resembled bicycle tires. ( Tan 75) She is describing the food very negatively to show
how she things Robert, the boy she has a major crush on, will see it. Also by using this much of a
description she helps us imagine what all of the food looks and how the American family will feel
about the Chinese s food choices. Ethos are the beliefs and the aspirations of someone. Pathos is the
showing of the emotions or how someone feels. Ethos and pathos are both used in Fish Cheeks
when the mother and daughter have an disagreement about their feelings on the Chinese culture. At
the end of the story after everyone left the daughter s mother tells

Great Sand Dunes Research Paper
My National Park is Great Sand Dunes in Colorado. I think that it is the most valuable because
there is a great diversity of habitats and animals there. Alpine Tundra is the highest ecosystem at
Great Sand Dunes. The conditions are too harsh for trees to live there, but wild flowers, pikas,
marmots, ptarmigans, and bighorn sheep live happily in these challenging conditions. The dune
field with the tallest dunes in North America spreads across 30 square miles. These dunes are a
place of extremes; the sand surface can reach 150В° degrees Fahrenheit on a summer afternoon or
drop to minus 20В° degrees Fahrenheit on a winter night. While the top 2 inches of sand are often
dry, these dunes are moist year round, kept wet by ongoing precipitation. This

people feel something and these feelings go towards helping the client/s make the decision to go

  • 3. Adaptation Of The Film Industry Article Critique: Adaptation in the Film Industry From the very outset, it is worth noting that the article s central theme is the practice of adaptation. Adaption is used in the article to describe the practice of transforming an already existing work of art to come up with a new form of art. In essence, adaptation involves developing a new work of art (such as a film) from an existing one (such as a novel or play). The new work of art is said to have transformed or adapted the original. As such, it is inevitably referred to a reproduction or adaptation of the original. In this sense, the focus of the article is on how different artistic and literary works have been transformed into films through adaptation. It is very evident that the author of the article was very passionate about the subject of adaptation. This can be deduced from the manner in which he approaches the subject. Subsequently, it is only logical to conclude that the issue of adaptation was a very interesting one at the time the article was written. If for nothing else, then there is a high possibility that adaptation was an issue of great concern (and even a source of controversy) among people in the film industry. Otherwise there may have been come competing interests at stake. These competing interests may have pitted those opposed to adaptation and those in support. Although the article does not say for real, it is highly probable that those in the film industry supported adaptation while those in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. External Auditors Independence Case Study Why is it important for external auditor to be independent? Throughout the years, banks, shareholders, possible investors and creditors always relied on the financial statements produced by a company. Since the management of a company is producing these documents it has been assumed that the managers may act dishonestly so that their performance looks better. To monitor the company s performance better the directors along with the shareholders employ external auditors to check all these financial statements for both intentional and unintentional errors. Therefore, external auditors have no motivation to produce dishonest reports, hence they are regarded as being truly independent. But can they actually be independent when their ... After the criminal investigation conducted by the SEC, Deloitte was accused of negligence, deception and failure to reveal fraud. According to the SEC (2005), the results are Deloitte Touche LLP has agreed to pay $50 million to settle charges stemming from its audit of Adelphia Communications Corporation s fiscal year 2000 financial statements. Although Deloitte wasn t pronounced guilty, it is obvious that they could have easily detected and disclosed the omissions and fraud that they could have found. If that had happened, probably the scale of this catastrophe would have been smaller and Adelphia wouldn t have gone totally bankrupt. This case inevitably shows us the importance of independent auditing. Another threat to the independence of the auditors is a phenomenon which took place around 3 or 4 decades ago. During that time the number of firms which required audits stopped expanding, the codes that prohibited advertising accounting firms were abolished, which enabled all these firms to steal market from each other. Furthermore, a lot of audit bodies engaged into consulting, bookkeeping assistance, investigation and tax advices. This trend resulted in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. The Severing Nature Of Sin In Jenson s View Of God Like any relationship, the relationship between God and his people requires input from both parties. One of the ways to positively engage in the relationship is through prayer, however, one of the ways to both actively and negatively engage in this relationship is through sin. Many historical and social developments have shifted sin into the realm of ethics, however, for Jenson, it is a theological concept. It is a theological concept in the sense that it relates to the active relationship between man and God, which stems precisely from being made in the image of God. As a result, sin is what breaks up this active relationship and community that God has established. Jenson achieves this conception of sin by once again analyzing God s identity in scripture, specifically his active... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sin is not only the rejection of one s relationship with god, but a rejection of one s relationship to other human beings as well. The aforementioned good moral life is not an individual goal that is separate from God or other human beings, it is a collective goal that forms a community that this sin destroys. The severing nature of sin stems directly from the story of Adam and Eve: their betrayal of God through manifests itself in original sin and relationship severing consequences, there is a division between humans, in which the woman is directed to be ruled by the husband, and a division between man and God, in which the people are banished from the garden of Eden and its many blessings. However, sin is only a rupture, not a complete dissolution, of one s relationship with God and thus, it is mendable and redeemable. Jenson states that what reunites us with God is not any of our particular works or actions, rather what unites us with God is our trust in what happens in Christ. It is precisely this faith and only this faith, this trust, that touches our lives to the divine drama (Jenson ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Today, many of us are able to live down any childhood baggage we started out with and eventually create the life of our dreams. From 1933 1945 Adolf Hitler rose to the peak of his political power, by creating a stronghold over the German people. The use of oratory skills, in conjunction with his knowledge and use of propaganda and his suppression of details of the Holocaust, created a vibe of electric excitement for Germany. (Fritzsche, 1998) His targeting of the German minority and his radical push for anti Semitism allowed Hitler to corrupt a weak and innocent nation. • 17. Summary Of The Short Story OfThe Father And Lamp At Noon Throughout years within society, people have grown accustomed to latching on to others characteristics and gradually learning from them. Regardless of the situation, people will naturally gravitate toward those with traits they favor and try to recognize their own values that bring them down. In the short stories of The Father , by Hugh Garner, and Lamp At Noon , by Sinclair Ross, both authors clearly exemplify how one person can be influenced by another, while then creating a better understandingof their own faults and amending themselves from those negative traits. While among those close to them, people tend to become influenced by those same people and slowly gain a better understanding of their traits and motivations. Consider the short story, Lamp At Noon , by Sinclair Ross. Paul, who had faith, dreams, and plans all invested into his farm is confronted by his wife and her aspirations for the family. After an argument with her over whether they should stay in the dust ridden farm or start a new in the city, Paul finally comes to an understanding that, She looked forward to no future. She had no faith or dream in which to make the dust and poverty less real. He understood suddenly (Ross 8). From this context, the reader is able to visualize how Ellen s words have reached Paul, and how he is able to bypass his wants and understand hers. Another short story that illustrates this same idea is The Father by Hugh Garner. The character of John Purcell profoundly makes a fool of himself and his son without even realizing the damage of his actions, and as a result, he see s that his, boy was sobbing silently, his thin shoulders shuddering beneath his blazer. Suddenly he (John Purcell) was ashamed by the enormity of his act, and had to prevent himself from taking his son on his knee and comforting him as he had done when the boy was younger (Garner 75). Due to the influences of his son s attitude toward the situation, John comes to his senses on the scene he has created and is able to understand his son s embarrassment and shame that he s brought upon him. The short stories The Father by Hugh Garner and Lamp At Noon by Sinclair Ross portray how one person can not only be influenced by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Pressure to Be Perfect The Bell Jar and Black Swan: The Pressure to be Perfect In a society where competition among others and influences from the media are becoming increasingly prevalent by the decade, it is easy for one to feel the extreme pressure to be perfect. Many individuals face the internal conflict of feeling that they are not adequate enough for various personal or societal standards, often leading to unhealthy insecurities, mental and emotional instabilities, and identity crises. Firstly, society s reminders to individuals to reach a superficial level of perfection create unhealthy stress within oneself, leading to progressive depression. It is the feeling of not being good enough for the world that crushes her self esteem and will to succeed, as later on she begins to contemplate harming her body and even committing suicide. The protagonist in Black Swan, prima ballerina Nina Sayers, faces a similar ignition to her mental instabilities through the pressures of society. In this case, Nina is naturally a perfectionist who tries to strive in the highly competitive ballet industry, which takes a huge toll on her physically, mentally, and emotionally. It is evident that throughout the course of Nina s training for her big debut as Swan Queen in the ballet company s annual production, she is obsessed with the idea of perfection to live up to society s expectations of what a prima ballerina should be. When the former prima ballerina of the company, Beth McIntyre, unexpectedly retires, the director, Thomas Leroy, introduces her to the entire ballet industry at a gala. He announces, But as we bid adieu to one star, we welcome another! We re opening our season with my new version of Swan Lake. Taking the role of our new Swan Queen, the exquisite, Nina Sayers (Aronofsky). • 23. The Stroop Effect Essay The Stroop effect is demonstrated by the reaction time to determine a color when the color is printed in a different color s name. Participants respond slower or make more errors when the meaning of the word is incongruent with the color of the word. Despite knowing the meaning of the word, participants showed incapability of ignoring the stimulus attribute. This reflects a clear instance of semantic interference and an unfathomed failure of selective attention (Stroop, 1935). In the study of the female chimpanzee Lana, the authors tested the Stroop like effect with an animal to gather evidence from a nonverbal organism to provide additional information about the role of compatibility between response latency and performance accuracy. ... Consistent with over selective attention, psychopath offenders displayed reduced Stroop interference on the separated color word Stroop and picture word Stroop tasks relative to offenders who were not psychopaths. However, psychopath offenders displayed normal Stroop interference on the standard color word Stroop. This information suggest a circumscribed attention deficit in psychopaths that hinders the use of unattended information that is (a) not integrated with deliberately attended information and (b) not compatible with current goal directed behavior (Hiatt, Schmitt, Newman, 2004). In another study, five experiments were conducted to determine if coloring a single Stroop element reduced automaticity or slowed the processing of a color. The results demonstrated that indeed it slowed processing of congruent and neutral stimuli more than it slows processing of incongruent stimuli (Monahan, 2001). In experiment 1, participants were instructed to press a key to determine if the stimulus was red, blue, yellow, or green. On the second half of the experiment, the stimulus appeared in grey with only one colored letter which was positioned randomly. Error rates for the experiment were below 2.5% for each condition, which is quite low. Functionalism And The Sociological Perspective On War Joseph Valdez Sociology 100 Professor McCune August 12, 2017 Sociological Perspective on War War has been going on just about as long as people have been alive. Whether it is just some cavemen fighting over a fire, or multiple countries going to war for justice, there has always been some scale of war. I am going to be analyzing way through functionalist, conflict, and symbolic interactionist perspectives. Functionalism is a theory of the mind in contemporary philosophy, developed largely as an alternative to both the identity theory of mind and behaviorism. Its main idea is that mental states are constituted solely by their functional role. The conflict perspective views the social world as difficult unfair and unreasonable. This perspective is typically more pessimistic. Symbolic interactionism is a theory that develops from practical considerations and that alludes to people s particular utilization of dialect to make images, normal implications, for deduction and correspondence with others. The three major sociological perspectives offer some very different views of war and terrorism. They each have their own opinions and stances that may be controversial, but they all give unique views on war, past and present. Functionalism emphasizes the usefulness of certain behaviors and social institutions for many aspects of society. Conflict perspective utilizes the idea of peace, and how war is a negative thing all around. Symbolic interactionist perspectives can use war as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

To argue this he shows that the alternative to this free economy, patterning our distribution of resources, is unjust because it causes interference in people s lives. Abstract: Animal personality is defined as an individual s distinguishing pattern of behaviour that remains consistent over time (Pervin and John 1997). Recently animal personality has become an important area of research. Psychologist have been interested in the role of individual differences in behaviour that may reflect temperament or personalities. This line of research has resulted in a number of studies revealing individual differences in personality traits in such diverse species as primates, marine mammals, insects, fish, invertebrates, and birds (Gosling, 2001). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The elephants are suffering from a shrinking size habitat due to the rapidly growing human populations. Majority of the Asian elephant s once spacious habitat has been separated into small fragments due to human settlements, plantations and large developments such as mines and roads. The illegal hunting and trade of these critically endangered animals is also contributing to the decrease in numbers. In Asian elephants, only the male elephants carry tusks, therefore hunting is aimed at the males only. Not only is the poaching of the males killing a large proportion of the Asian elephant population but it is also raising a concern about the genetic effects. When these tusked males are killed, the number in the male population decreases resulting in a skewed sex ratios. The major concern with this is that it may lead to inbreeding and eventually to a low breeding success which will then bring down the population number even more. To help save the Asian Elephant populations, Melbourne Zoo has set up the Cooperative Conservation Breeding Program. The aim of their program is to create an insurance population of the species. Since the establishment of this breeding program in 2006, three pregnancies have been achieved. In this essay I will argue that the ontological argument does not successfully prove that god exists as the argument not only contradicts itself but fails to put forward any solid proof for god s existence. The essay topic above raises two main areas of attention in need of address. These two areas being; the ontological argument and what it is, and secondly, whether or not this argument is successful in arriving at the conclusion of god s existence. To do the latter, I must first state the argument and what it is. The Ontological Argument states, following the definition of God above, that the concept of God or, a god, is understood (even by the fool as stated by Anselm) (Blackburn, 1999:154). Therefore as the concept of God is understood God therefore exists in the understanding (taken as the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. Selecting The Next Chapter Selecting the Next Chapter Eventually, we all reach the age at the end of our high school career when we have to choose a path. The path that we select will guide each of us to the trail that we will follow for the rest of our lives. Some of us will choose to go directly into the workforce, potentially go to a trade school, or even go onto a post secondary education in order to obtain a degree. What decision we make then determines what the rest of our life will hold, how successful we can possibly be, our yearly salary, and can introduce us to people who will play active roles throughout our entire life. Now, I am a senior in high school, and I have quickly found this decision right on my doorstep. Over the past few years, I have had my eyes on several different post secondary college options, but I have narrowed this list quite significantly over the past few months based on factors like their available majors, the college s size, and the extracurricular activities that are offered by the institution. With this said, I have selected three colleges that have specifically caught my eye based on these factors: Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky; Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana; and Saint Mary of the Woods College in St. Mary of the Woods, Indiana. Majors Of course, when selecting colleges recently, it was necessary to pick those ones that followed my interest base. Ideally, this would be to obtain a Master s Degree in Science for Agricultural ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. Comparing Empathy in Blade Runner and Slaughterhouse-Five... Empathy in Blade Runner (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep)and Slaughterhouse Five What does it mean to be human? This is a question that is often asked in literary works. Is it our intelligence that separates us from being like any other animal on this planet or is it something else? Perhaps it is our ability to feel empathy for other humans and other forms of life. If this is so, then how is it that we also have violence and wars where humans hurt and kill other humans? How is it that humans can hurt animals without a second thought, if it s our ability to feel empathy that separates us from them? Both Philip K. Dick and Kurt Vonnegut explore these questions in their novels Blade Runner (Do Androids Dream ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Everyone is a follower of Mercerism, which encourages people to feel empathy for others and for animals. In this manner, everyone on Earth survives without feeling that he or she is alone. The main character of Blade Runner is Rick Deckard, a bounty hunter for the Los Angeles police department. Several androids had killed their owners on Mars and had escaped to Earth. The first bounty hunter that went after them managed to retire two before being put in the hospital himself. It was up to Deckard to destroy the remaining six. Unfortunately, the androids who escaped were the new Nexus 6 types, which looked and acted exactly like real humans. They were even more intelligent than most humans. The only way to tell them apart from real humans is by measuring the amount of empathy they can feel, which isn t as great as humans. While hunting these rouge androids, Deckard s whole perception of what it is to be human gets questioned and he begins to wonder if there is that much difference between a human and an android. Slaughterhouse Five, is based on the author s real life experiences in World War II. In fact, chapter one of the book is all about how Vonnegut is going about writing this novel. The main character of this book, though, is a civilian named Billy Pilgrim, who through unfortunate circumstances ends up on the enemy side of the line during the war. He ... She was pulling black veins out of the backs of fleshy prawns. The kitchen was littered with appalling mounds of raw food: A slimy rock cod with bulging eyes that pleaded not to be thrown into a pan of hot oil. Tofu, which looked like stacked wedges of rubbery white sponges. A bowl soaking dried fungus back to life. A plate of squid, their backs crisscrossed with knife markings so they resembled bicycle tires. ( Tan 75) She is describing the food very negatively to show how she things Robert, the boy she has a major crush on, will see it. Also by using this much of a description she helps us imagine what all of the food looks and how the American family will feel about the Chinese s food choices. Ethos are the beliefs and the aspirations of someone. Pathos is the showing of the emotions or how someone feels. Ethos and pathos are both used in Fish Cheeks when the mother and daughter have an disagreement about their feelings on the Chinese culture. • 47. Great Sand Dunes Research Paper My National Park is Great Sand Dunes in Colorado. I think that it is the most valuable because there is a great diversity of habitats and animals there. Alpine Tundra is the highest ecosystem at Great Sand Dunes. The conditions are too harsh for trees to live there, but wild flowers, pikas, marmots, ptarmigans, and bighorn sheep live happily in these challenging conditions. The dune field with the tallest dunes in North America spreads across 30 square miles. These dunes are a place of extremes; the sand surface can reach 150В° degrees Fahrenheit on a summer afternoon or drop to minus 20В° degrees Fahrenheit on a winter night. While the top 2 inches of sand are often dry, these dunes are moist year round, kept wet by ongoing precipitation. This ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
