Backup with Bareos and ZFS - by Christian ReißNETWAYS
Doing backups is great, but storing the data somewhere is a whole different ballgame. You can use tapes, of course; but with always
declining prices and increasing reliability of Hard Disks storing all your data as files is becoming more and more preferable. There is just the matter on how to save them. As single files in a single filesystem, shared across a multitude of servers or even in one large archive. The option is only limited by the Administrators imagination.
In my speech I want to tell you about my experiences with storing all archives in ZFS. Opting for one-dataset-per-host, server-side compression, ZFS Raid and quota enforcement. And since we are all loving the fully automated approach I will show you how to do this in puppet. This option I am presenting you is in production. Hundreds of servers are fully automated with Puppet, Bareos/Bacula and ZFS.

Advanced cgroups and namespaces
This talk picks up where we left off in the previous cgroups and namespaces talk and dive in even deeper!
Agenda:
* cgroups v2 design (cgroup v2 was started to be merged in the current kernel, 4.4)
* cgroups v2 examples (migrating tasks, enabling and disabling controllers, and more).
* comparison between cgroup v2 unified hierarchy and cgroup v1 legacy hierarchy.
* PIDs namespaces (from kernel 4.3)
* cgroup namespaces (not merged yet)
This is to introduce the related components in SUSE Linux Enterprise High Availability Extension product to build High Available Storage (ha-lvm/drbd/iscsi/nfs, clvm, ocfs2, cluster-raid1).
The latest releases of today’s popular Linux distributions include all the tools needed to do interesting things with Linux containers.
For the Makefile MicroVPS project, I set out to build a minimal virtual private server-like environment in a Linux container from scratch.
These are my requirements for the MicroVPS:
Minimal init sequence
Most of what happens in a rc.sysinit file is not needed (or wanted) in a container. However, to work like a virtual private server, the MicroVPS will need some kind of init system. The absolute minimum would be enough to start the network and at least one service.
Native network namespace
The MicroVPS will have a dedicated network namespace. It should be easy to configure.
Native package management
The package set installed in the container image will be managed using native tools like deb or rpm.
Automated build
An automated repeatable build process is a must.
Fast iteration cycle
The building and testing cycle must be fast enough not to drive me insane.
Easy management
It should be easy to distribute, monitor, and run a MicroVPS container.
In this tutorial, I will show how to use the tools included with Linux to build a virtual private server in a Linux container from scratch, using GNU Make to automate the build process.
Kernel Recipes 2015 - Porting Linux to a new processor architectureAnne Nicolas
Getting the Linux kernel running on a new processor architecture is a difficult process. Worse still, there is not much documentation available describing the porting process.
After spending countless hours becoming almost fluent in many of the supported architectures, I discovered that a well-defined skeleton shared by the majority of ports exists. Such a skeleton can logically be split into two parts that intersect a great deal.
The first part is the boot code, meaning the architecture-specific code that is executed from the moment the kernel takes over from the bootloader until init is finally executed. The second part concerns the architecture-specific code that is regularly executed once the booting phase has been completed and the kernel is running normally. This second part includes starting new threads, dealing with hardware interrupts or software exceptions, copying data from/to user applications, serving system calls, and so on.
In this talk I will provide an overview of the procedure, or at least one possible procedure, that can be followed when porting the Linux kernel to a new processor architecture.

Raleigh NC Docker Meetup presentation from October 21, 2015.
Doing development and test for an application on your laptop or a single server is an effective and quick way to ensure functionality, but can be limiting for larger applications. When the application is ready to deploy into production using containers, you’re going to want to use more than one server to increase resources and provide distributed availability. There are a large number of orchestration platforms for Docker which allow you to define an application consisting of one or more containers, and then coordinate deploying the application across small and large farms of servers. In this session we will concentrate on the three most popular orchestration platforms: Mesos, Kubernetes, and Docker Swarm. We will learn how each of them defines an application, some of their strengths, some weaknesses, and why you might choose one over another.

Addressing Issues of Risk, and Governance in OpenStack without sacrificing Agility
Audience: Intermediate
Topic: Public & Hybrid Clouds
Abstract: OpenStack has rapidly moved beyond the “science project” label that many of its detractors’ use, but for many stakeholders there are still many uncertainties around governance, compliance, data security and data retention. These issues are the biggest inhibitors to adoption of any cloud technology and left unanswered will slow down the adoption of OpenStack, particularly within government and highly regulated industries such as healthcare. In this presentation NetApp outlines a hybrid approach that leverages the best of open-source and next generation technologies within an OpenStack deployment, as well as a way of unifying data management across OpenStack, HyperScale public cloud and traditional Enterprise architecture that addresses these questions while providing a solid platform for rapid innovation.

zkStudyClub - Reef: Fast Succinct Non-Interactive Zero-Knowledge Regex ProofsAlex Pruden
This paper presents Reef, a system for generating publicly verifiable succinct non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs that a committed document matches or does not match a regular expression. We describe applications such as proving the strength of passwords, the provenance of email despite redactions, the validity of oblivious DNS queries, and the existence of mutations in DNA. Reef supports the Perl Compatible Regular Expression syntax, including wildcards, alternation, ranges, capture groups, Kleene star, negations, and lookarounds. Reef introduces a new type of automata, Skipping Alternating Finite Automata (SAFA), that skips irrelevant parts of a document when producing proofs without undermining soundness, and instantiates SAFA with a lookup argument. Our experimental evaluation confirms that Reef can generate proofs for documents with 32M characters; the proofs are small and cheap to verify (under a second).

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.

Gopi is a frequent speaker and well-known leader in continuous delivery and integrating security into software delivery.
A tale of scale & speed: How the US Navy is enabling software delivery from l...sonjaschweigert1
Rapid and secure feature delivery is a goal across every application team and every branch of the DoD. The Navy’s DevSecOps platform, Party Barge, has achieved:
- Reduction in onboarding time from 5 weeks to 1 day
- Improved developer experience and productivity through actionable findings and reduction of false positives
- Maintenance of superior security standards and inherent policy enforcement with Authorization to Operate (ATO)
Development teams can ship efficiently and ensure applications are cyber ready for Navy Authorizing Officials (AOs). In this webinar, Sigma Defense and Anchore will give attendees a look behind the scenes and demo secure pipeline automation and security artifacts that speed up application ATO and time to production.
We will cover:
- How to remove silos in DevSecOps
- How to build efficient development pipeline roles and component templates
- How to deliver security artifacts that matter for ATO’s (SBOMs, vulnerability reports, and policy evidence)
- How to streamline operations with automated policy checks on container images
