Amazon Elastic File System (Amazon EFS) is a file storage service for Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) instances. Amazon EFS is easy to use and provides a simple interface that allows you to create and configure file systems quickly and easily. With Amazon EFS, storage capacity is elastic, growing and shrinking automatically as you add and remove files, so your applications have the storage they need, when they need it.
Amazon EFS supports the Network File System version 4 (NFSv4) protocol, so the applications and tools that you use today work seamlessly with Amazon EFS. Multiple Amazon EC2 instances can access an Amazon EFS file system at the same time, providing a common data source for workloads and applications running on more than one instance.
With Amazon EFS, you pay only for the storage used by your file system. You don't need to provision storage in advance and there is no minimum fee or setup cost. Amazon EFS is designed for a wide variety of use cases like content repositories, development environments, and home directories. With on-demand scaling and performance, Amazon EFS is an ideal solution for Big Data applications.

Amazon Elastic File System (Amazon EFS) is a file storage service for Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) instances. Amazon EFS is easy to use and provides a simple interface that allows you to create and configure file systems quickly and easily. With Amazon EFS, storage capacity is elastic, growing and shrinking automatically as you add and remove files, so your applications have the storage they need, when they need it.
Amazon EFS supports the Network File System version 4 (NFSv4) protocol, so the applications and tools that you use today work seamlessly with Amazon EFS. Multiple Amazon EC2 instances can access an Amazon EFS file system at the same time, providing a common data source for workloads and applications running on more than one instance.
With Amazon EFS, you pay only for the storage used by your file system. You don't need to provision storage in advance and there is no minimum fee or setup cost. Amazon EFS is designed for a wide variety of use cases like content repositories, development environments, and home directories. With on-demand scaling and performance, Amazon EFS is an ideal solution for Big Data applications.

John Martin is NetApp’s Director of Strategy and Technology, working as part of the Office of the CTO. Based in Sydney, John is responsible for developing and advocating NetApp’s flash portfolio across the APAC region.

Big blockbuster movies now generate huge amounts of data at every stage of production and distribution. During production, visual effects and CGI require tens of thousands of computer cores to render scenes, generating terabytes of uncompressed video data. A typical two-hour movie produces over 50 terabytes of source content. Movies are now distributed digitally to theaters on hard drives rather than film reels. For home viewing, films are compressed into over 100 versions to stream on different devices and platforms, ranging from 150 megabytes for mobile streaming to 30 gigabytes for 3D Blu-rays. By 2017, the total annual data production from the entertainment industry is forecast to reach 87 exabytes, a fourfold increase in just five years.

Migrating Windows-based Enterprise Applications to AWS
Cordant Group migrated their Windows-based enterprise applications from their own data centers to AWS to gain scalability, flexibility and regional coverage. They tested various AWS and third-party storage options before choosing NetApp Cloud ONTAP, which provided a familiar NFS environment without requiring application changes. This allowed them to attach iSCSI volumes to virtual SQL instances while maintaining their data protection schema. Their new architecture runs across AWS availability zones for high availability and disaster recovery. They plan to further expand globally using AWS regions and reduce backup costs by leveraging NetApp AltaVault and Amazon S3.
NetApp ontap simulator
The document discusses NetApp ONTAP Simulator, which allows testing ONTAP features without physical hardware. Difference between LUN and igroup os type
LUN OS type specifies the OS of the host accessing the LUN, determining data layout and ensuring proper alignment. Igroup OS type indicates the OS type of initiators in an igroup, enforcing that all initiators are the same type. When creating a LUN, the LUN OS type must match the host and cannot change, while igroup OS type can change and acts as an OS segregation attribute. LUNs are mapped to igroups to grant initiators access to the LUN.

Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity server
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).
