Alopecia is defined as the absence or loss of hair. There are several types of alopecia including alopecia areata (patchy hair loss), alopecia totalis (total scalp hair loss), alopecia universalis (total body hair loss), and androgenetic alopecia (male/female pattern baldness). Causes can include autoimmune issues, certain medications, medical conditions, radiation/chemotherapy, and genetics. Treatment depends on the underlying cause but may include corticosteroid injections, minoxidil, finasteride, wigs, or hair transplants.
