Institute of Research Design for Librarianship (IRDL), is a three-year project funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services in the United States, which seeks to provide professional development opportunities and a support system for academic librarians who want to improve their research skills and increase their research output. We have recently completed the first nine-day Institute for 25 librarians from all over the country, and we would like to share our experience with the international community, hoping to generate more interest and encourage more discussion on practitioner research in LIS.

This is a short (1.5 hour) presentation for support staff about RDA and the do's and don'ts of editing bibliographic records in MARC format. Covers background material on RDA, identifying RDA records vs AACR2 records, changes to records and cataloging practices due to RDA (fields, vocabularies, terms, etc.), hybrid AACR2/RDA records, and the basic rules of editing (both general and for specific fields).
The workshop focuses on constructing authorized access points for records under RDA, utilizing the LC/PCC Policy Statements (LCC/PCC PS). This is NOT a NACO workshop. Authorized access points for personal names, corporate bodies, conferences, and works and expressions (titles) will be covered, as will relationship designators for personal names and corporate bodies. Subject headings will not be covered.
What Students Want: Redesigning Research Guides Based on Student NeedsAmy Gratz Barker
Presented at LibTech Conference, March 15, 2018. Creating and maintaining research guides that students use and find helpful is an ongoing challenge. On deciding that our subject guides were due for a significant update, librarians at Kennesaw State University realized we needed to learn what our students wanted from these resources. We conducted a study focused on learning what information students expect to find on research guides, as well as how they would organize it. During this presentation I will share the study results and how that information was used to design a new subject guide template in LibGuides CMS. Additionally, I will explain beta-testing the new template prior to updating all subject guides for the fall 2018 semester. Attendees will take away recommendations for transferable design characteristics for your own guides, card sorting, and usability testing methodologies you can use to learn what your own community is looking for.

Learning analytics (LA) has been touted as a game changer for education. The rapidly growing literature associated with the field serves to promote this fervour in citing the vast impact LA can and will play in the education space. From the detection of at-risk students to address retention and performance, building self-regulated learning, development and identification of 21st Century literacies to the realisation of personalised learning, there appears little that LA cannot contribute to within learning and teaching practice. However, if LA is such an impactful, desirable and worthy endeavour that can effectively improve learning, and our understanding of the learning process, why are there so few examples of institutional LA adoption?
From Print to Online: Revamping Technical Services with a Distributed Workfl...NASIG
In order to improve patron access to the library's collection of electronic resources, upgrade staff competencies for working with electronic resources, and enhance workflow efficiencies, both the Technical Services Department of American University’s Pence Law Library and the Information Delivery Services division at American University’s Bender Library implemented reorganizations. These two libraries, however, chose different organizational models. The law library redefined itself through a distributed model using existing staff. In contrast, the Bender Library formed a centralized Electronic Resource Management Unit to better manage access to and discovery of the electronic resource collection. The presenters will examine the successes and challenges of revising workflows, reassigning tasks, and redistributing print-based work to address the growing needs of electronic collections and diminished volume of print materials in both a centralized and distributed model. This program also provides an overview of project management techniques and how these techniques were implemented and supplemented in order to evolve the skills of the staff at both libraries. The program will also provide an overview of how a new vision and new goals were crafted; how workflows were reviewed and revised; and how jobs were rewritten and reassigned. In addition, the presenters will address shared challenges with current workflows and organizational structures. The intended audience is librarians in smaller to mid-sized libraries who do not have a librarian or department dedicated to electronic resources but who need to tackle electronic resources workflows and evolve staff's print-based skills to accommodate the needs of electronic resources.

More recently, libraries have looked at expanding new space assessment to include impact on student learning. Simplified presentation on library metadata evolution, the perils of not curating the metadata properly, and how it's being used "in the wild".
But…it’s all on the internet and a keyword search will find it, right? Not exactly... There's been a massive change in cataloging in libraries with the rise of the internet. Everything is connected, including our metadata. Catalogers are no longer isolated, and metadata management is no longer just an internal process. Everything we do now links to the wider world of metadata, pushing libraries into re-purposing our long-held work into the new frontiers of identity management and linked data.
This is intended to be a two day workshop on RDA for individuals experienced with cataloging and MARC. This workshop will explore RDA with a specific focus on theories, practicalities, authority work, change highlights, and hands on cataloging. Formats covered will include monographs, serials, audio/visual materials, and online resources (integrating and monographs). The workshop will take the student through understanding the theories behind RDA and then cataloging by RDA standards.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable.
