CONTENT
 Overview of NTPC
 Thermal power plant
 Process of power generation
 Major elements in TPP
 Control and Instrumentation
 Laboratories in C&I
 Pollution control systems
 Conclusion
 Bibliography
2
NTPC
 Founded by Government of India in 1975
 Known as “MAHARATNA” of India
 Current power generating capacity - 34,854 MW
 NTPC plants
 Coal based Plants - 17
 Gas based Plants - 07
 Planning to generate 75,000 MW by 2017
3
Thermal Power Plant
 A Thermal Power Plant converts the heat
energy of coal into electrical energy
 Power plant in which the prime mover
is steam driven
 Thermal Power Plants constitute 75.43%
of the total installed captive and non-captive
power generation in India
 In thermal generating stations coal, oil, natural gas etc. are employed as primary sources of
energy
4
Process of Power Generation 5
Electricity From Coal
Process of power generation.........
 Water Intake
 Boiler Heating
 Steam Turbine
 Generator
 Special Mountings
 Ash collection system
6
Elements of TPP
 D.M Plant
 Deaerator
 Boiler feed Pump
 Economizer
 Air Pre-Heater
 Boiler
 Super Heater
 Turbine
7
Control and Instrumentation
 Control and instrumentation in any process industry,
can be compared to the nerve system in the human being
 C&I, as the name indicates, is a branch in engineering
which deals with various measurement, indication,
transmission and control in different technical field.
 The main work is to observe, control and manipulate
electrical as well as non-electrical quantities like
temperature, pressure, vibrations.
8
Objectives of C & I
 Efficient Operation of the plant
 Economic Operation of the plant
 Safe operation of the plant
 Pollution control
9
Laboratories in C&I
 Manometry Lab
 Protection and Interlocks Lab
 Automation Lab
 Electronics Lab
 Water Treatment Plant
 Furnaces Safety Supervisory System Lab
10
POLLUTION CONTROL SYSTEMS
In order to ensure that NTPC comply with all the stipulated environment norms,
various pollution control systems / devices as discussed below have been installed to
control air and water pollution
 Electrostatic Precipitators
 Flue Gas Stacks
 Neutralization pits
 Cooling Towers
 Ash Water Recycling System
11
Conclusion
 Industrial training being an integral part of engineering curriculum provides not only easier
understanding but also helps acquaint an individual with technologies.
 It exposes an individual to practical aspect of all things which differ considerably from
theoretical models
 The training at NTPC Singrauli was all together an exotic experience, since work, culture and
mutual cooperation was excellent here
