INTRODUCTION
Air conditioning is the process of altering the
properties of air to more favorable conditions.
The control of these conditions may be desirable to
maintain the health and comfort of the occupants.
HISTORY
IN 1902, THE FIRST MODERN ELECTRICAL AIR
CONDITIONING UNIT WAS INVENTED BY WILLIS
CARRIER IN BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
THE FIRST AIR CONDITIONER, DESIGNED AND BUILT IN
BUFFALO BY CARRIER, BEGAN WORKING ON 17 JULY
1902.
Type of Air conditioning System
I. Window air-conditioning system
II. Split air-conditioning system
III. Package air-conditioning system
IV. Central air-conditioning system
Window Air Conditioner Unit
• A window air conditioner unit implements a
complete air conditioner in a small space.
• The units are made small enough to fit into a
standard window frame.
• Easily operated plug it in and turn it on to get
cool air.
Window Air Conditioner Unit Continued
Components
• A compressor
• An expansion valve
• A hot coil (on the outside)
• A chilled coil (on the inside)
• Two fans
• A control unit
The fans blow air over the coils to improve their ability
to dissipate heat (to the outside air) and cold (to the
room being cooled).
Advantages Of Window Air Conditioner Unit
• Window Air Conditioner, Are more popular, thus are
easier to find and price competition is in full force
• Often have relatively low noise output and high
efficiency
• Water drains from the unit to the exterior with no
intervention needed
• Sends ALL hot air to the exterior as warm air is
exchanged for cold
• Can be placed either in windows or wall holes
Disadvantage Of Window Air Conditioner Unit
• The window where you install the air conditioner is
blocked as long as the unit is there
• Dripping water outside can end up where you do not
want it to.
• Installation can get tricky if you do not have exterior
support.
• The panels that come with these units can let in a lot of
hot air, making the air conditioner less efficient
• Even the best installation can still leave your home or
apartment at a security risk
• the appearance of many window units in a living area is
not seen as the ultimate in decorating or class
Application of Window Conditioning Systems
•Houses
•Apartment
•Small shops
•Gardens
•Green House
Split Air Conditioner Unit
The split air conditioner comprises of two parts: the
outdoor unit and the indoor unit.
• The outdoor unit, fitted outside the room, houses
components like the compressor, condenser and
expansion valve.
• The indoor unit comprises the evaporator or cooling coil
and the cooling fan. For this unit you don’t have to make
any slot in the wall of the room.
Further, present day split units have aesthetic appeal and
do not take up as much space as a window unit. A split air
conditioner can be used to cool one or two rooms.
Type of Split Air Conditioner
•Wall mounted
•Floor mounted/Tower AC
•Ceiling mounted/Cassette AC
•Multi Split ACs
Wall Mounted
Wall mounted split ACs are the most popular.
The indoor unit is placed in the room and duct
cannot be concealed.
 It is generally for small rooms which can be
cooled uniformly easily.
Ceiling mounted/Cassette AC
 These space-saving ACs are shaped like cassettes and are
designed to be installed on ceilings.
 The panel of these air conditioners is designed to blend with
all kinds of home décor.
 They are stylish, and are known to deliver fantastic
performances.
 They are perfect for large spaces where windows or split AC
may not reach out.
 The price for this type of AC is higher than wall mounted

Packaged Air-Conditioning System
There are two possible arrangements with the
package unit.
In the first one, all the components, namely the
compressor, condenser expansion valve and
evaporator are housed in a single box. The cooled air
is thrown by the high capacity blower, and it flows
through the ducts laid through various rooms.
In the second arrangement, the
compressor and condenser are housed in
one casing. The compressed gas passes
through individual units, comprised of the
expansion valve and cooling coil, located
in various rooms.
Packaged Air-Conditioning System
• An HVAC designer will suggest this type of air
conditioner if you want to cool more than two
rooms or a larger space at your home or office.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Packed AC System
Pros
Units has the ability to
move them whenever
and wherever you like.
Units are affordable.
Units are available in
different capacities.
Systems are available for
cooling only, or for
heating and cooling.
Cons
 Work space with carpet
makes it difficult to roll the
unit.
 A 12,000 BTU covers an
area of 400 square feet.
 Approximately 3 units are
necessary to accommodate
a the size of this room C12.
 lower Energy Efficiency
Rating (EER).
Application of Packaged Air-
Conditioning System
• These are normally easy to move about so they
can apply to almost anywhere with an electric
outlet.
Central Air-Conditioning System
• The central air conditioning plants or the systems
are used when large buildings, hotels, theaters,
airports, shopping malls etc. are to be air
conditioned completely.
• The window and split air conditioners are used for
single rooms or small office spaces. Further, these
small units cannot satisfactorily cool the large halls,
auditoriums, receptions areas etc.
Advantages of Central Air-Conditioning System
 Central air conditioners make less noise. The condenser, fan and
compressor are located in an outdoor unit.
 Does not affect the view from outside or within the working
space.
 The central air system does not take up any inside space
 Central air conditioners are easy to operate.
 It is possible for specialized central air conditioners to operate in
a reversed cycle.
Disadvantages of Central Air-Conditioning System
Higher energy bills
Ductwork can be expensive and prone to leaking when
damaged or due to deterioration from age.
Unit requires annual maintenance.
If you’re having a new system installed to replace or
upgrade a current system, the ductwork may need to be
updated or modified as well, to ensure it is compliant
with the new system.
Unlike a ductless system, you cannot individually adjust
the temperature for each room.
Application of Central Air-Conditioning System
• Airports
• Shopping Malls
• Hotels
• Theaters Library
• Museum
Refrigerant-22
• Chlorodifluoromethane better known as R22, is a
colorless non-flammable gas. It is a part of the
HCFC group or Hydrochlorofluorocarbons.
Production of Refrigerant-22
• R-22 has been given the name
chlorodifluoromethane and also given the
molecular formula, CHClF2.
• R-22 is produced from chlorofoam,CHCl3.
Chlorofoam is used in the making of Refrigerants.
CHCl3 + 2HF  CHClF2 + 2 HCl
Importance of R-22
Chlorodifluoromethane (R-22, Freon-22), is the most
common refrigerant used for stationary refrigeration
and air conditioning.
Refrigerant-22 has many positive attributes that
makes it very eligible for use in A/C systems such as:
• Low Boiling Point- (-40.81°C)
• Low Freezing Point (-146°C)
• Molecular Weight - (86.47 g/mol)
Effects of R-22
• Chlorodifluoromethane is a good refrigerant with one
major disadvantage which is its environmental effects.
• R-22 was used as a replacement for R-12 and R-11, as
those are high ozone depleting refrigerant, yet being
lower it had a global warming potential of 1810
• Freon-22 is adding to a hole in the ozone layer so
therefore The Montreal Protocol required that
Freon-22 is to be phased out .
• R-22 along with other HCFCs were banned and
was illegal to use for servicing air-conditioning
and refrigeration equipment therefore they had
to be replaced if they use HCFC refrigerants.
Hazards
• R-22 if come in contact with skin, eyes and/or mouth can
cause frostbite, drowsiness and confusion, it can also
damage the cardiovascular system, respiratory system.
Question and answer
1. Name 2 type of AC system.
2. Give one application of each Ac System.
3. Which AC System is most used?
4. Tell one advantage of each system.
5. Give one Disadvantage of each system.

Air Conditioning Systems and Refrigerant R22

  • 1.
  • 2.
  • 3. Objective • The schematic diagram of air conditioning system. • Describe the working principles of the different systems. • Importance and properties of R-22.
  • 4. INTRODUCTION Air conditioning is the process of altering the properties of air to more favorable conditions. The control of these conditions may be desirable to maintain the health and comfort of the occupants.
  • 5. HISTORY IN 1902, THE FIRST MODERN ELECTRICAL AIR CONDITIONING UNIT WAS INVENTED BY WILLIS CARRIER IN BUFFALO, NEW YORK. THE FIRST AIR CONDITIONER, DESIGNED AND BUILT IN BUFFALO BY CARRIER, BEGAN WORKING ON 17 JULY 1902.
  • 6. Type of Air conditioning System I. Window air-conditioning system II. Split air-conditioning system III. Package air-conditioning system IV. Central air-conditioning system
  • 7.
  • 8. Window Air Conditioner Unit • A window air conditioner unit implements a complete air conditioner in a small space. • The units are made small enough to fit into a standard window frame. • Easily operated plug it in and turn it on to get cool air.
  • 9. Window Air Conditioner Unit Continued Components • A compressor • An expansion valve • A hot coil (on the outside) • A chilled coil (on the inside) • Two fans • A control unit The fans blow air over the coils to improve their ability to dissipate heat (to the outside air) and cold (to the room being cooled).
  • 10. Advantages Of Window Air Conditioner Unit • Window Air Conditioner, Are more popular, thus are easier to find and price competition is in full force • Often have relatively low noise output and high efficiency • Water drains from the unit to the exterior with no intervention needed • Sends ALL hot air to the exterior as warm air is exchanged for cold • Can be placed either in windows or wall holes
  • 11. Disadvantage Of Window Air Conditioner Unit • The window where you install the air conditioner is blocked as long as the unit is there • Dripping water outside can end up where you do not want it to. • Installation can get tricky if you do not have exterior support. • The panels that come with these units can let in a lot of hot air, making the air conditioner less efficient • Even the best installation can still leave your home or apartment at a security risk • the appearance of many window units in a living area is not seen as the ultimate in decorating or class
  • 12. Application of Window Conditioning Systems •Houses •Apartment •Small shops •Gardens •Green House
  • 13.
  • 14. Split Air Conditioner Unit The split air conditioner comprises of two parts: the outdoor unit and the indoor unit. • The outdoor unit, fitted outside the room, houses components like the compressor, condenser and expansion valve. • The indoor unit comprises the evaporator or cooling coil and the cooling fan. For this unit you don’t have to make any slot in the wall of the room. Further, present day split units have aesthetic appeal and do not take up as much space as a window unit. A split air conditioner can be used to cool one or two rooms.
  • 15. Type of Split Air Conditioner •Wall mounted •Floor mounted/Tower AC •Ceiling mounted/Cassette AC •Multi Split ACs
  • 16. Wall Mounted Wall mounted split ACs are the most popular. The indoor unit is placed in the room and duct cannot be concealed.  It is generally for small rooms which can be cooled uniformly easily.
  • 17. Ceiling mounted/Cassette AC  These space-saving ACs are shaped like cassettes and are designed to be installed on ceilings.  The panel of these air conditioners is designed to blend with all kinds of home décor.  They are stylish, and are known to deliver fantastic performances.  They are perfect for large spaces where windows or split AC may not reach out.  The price for this type of AC is higher than wall mounted
  • 18.
  • 19. Pros and Cons of Split Air Conditioner Unit CONS • Price • Installation • Location • Noise PROS • VERSATILE • ATTRACTIVE • QUIET • ENERGY EFFICIENT
  • 20. Application Of Split Air Conditioning Systems •School •Library •supermarket
  • 21.
  • 22. Packaged Air-Conditioning System There are two possible arrangements with the package unit.
  • 23. In the first one, all the components, namely the compressor, condenser expansion valve and evaporator are housed in a single box. The cooled air is thrown by the high capacity blower, and it flows through the ducts laid through various rooms.
  • 24. In the second arrangement, the compressor and condenser are housed in one casing. The compressed gas passes through individual units, comprised of the expansion valve and cooling coil, located in various rooms.
  • 25. Packaged Air-Conditioning System • An HVAC designer will suggest this type of air conditioner if you want to cool more than two rooms or a larger space at your home or office.
  • 26.
  • 27. Advantages and Disadvantages of Packed AC System Pros Units has the ability to move them whenever and wherever you like. Units are affordable. Units are available in different capacities. Systems are available for cooling only, or for heating and cooling. Cons  Work space with carpet makes it difficult to roll the unit.  A 12,000 BTU covers an area of 400 square feet.  Approximately 3 units are necessary to accommodate a the size of this room C12.  lower Energy Efficiency Rating (EER).
  • 28. Application of Packaged Air- Conditioning System • These are normally easy to move about so they can apply to almost anywhere with an electric outlet.
  • 29. Central Air-Conditioning System • The central air conditioning plants or the systems are used when large buildings, hotels, theaters, airports, shopping malls etc. are to be air conditioned completely. • The window and split air conditioners are used for single rooms or small office spaces. Further, these small units cannot satisfactorily cool the large halls, auditoriums, receptions areas etc.
  • 30.
  • 31. Advantages of Central Air-Conditioning System  Central air conditioners make less noise. The condenser, fan and compressor are located in an outdoor unit.  Does not affect the view from outside or within the working space.  The central air system does not take up any inside space  Central air conditioners are easy to operate.  It is possible for specialized central air conditioners to operate in a reversed cycle.
  • 32. Disadvantages of Central Air-Conditioning System Higher energy bills Ductwork can be expensive and prone to leaking when damaged or due to deterioration from age. Unit requires annual maintenance. If you’re having a new system installed to replace or upgrade a current system, the ductwork may need to be updated or modified as well, to ensure it is compliant with the new system. Unlike a ductless system, you cannot individually adjust the temperature for each room.
  • 33. Application of Central Air-Conditioning System • Airports • Shopping Malls • Hotels • Theaters Library • Museum
  • 34. Refrigerant-22 • Chlorodifluoromethane better known as R22, is a colorless non-flammable gas. It is a part of the HCFC group or Hydrochlorofluorocarbons.
  • 35. Production of Refrigerant-22 • R-22 has been given the name chlorodifluoromethane and also given the molecular formula, CHClF2. • R-22 is produced from chlorofoam,CHCl3. Chlorofoam is used in the making of Refrigerants. CHCl3 + 2HF  CHClF2 + 2 HCl
  • 36.
  • 37. Importance of R-22 Chlorodifluoromethane (R-22, Freon-22), is the most common refrigerant used for stationary refrigeration and air conditioning. Refrigerant-22 has many positive attributes that makes it very eligible for use in A/C systems such as: • Low Boiling Point- (-40.81°C) • Low Freezing Point (-146°C) • Molecular Weight - (86.47 g/mol)
  • 38. Effects of R-22 • Chlorodifluoromethane is a good refrigerant with one major disadvantage which is its environmental effects. • R-22 was used as a replacement for R-12 and R-11, as those are high ozone depleting refrigerant, yet being lower it had a global warming potential of 1810
  • 39. • Freon-22 is adding to a hole in the ozone layer so therefore The Montreal Protocol required that Freon-22 is to be phased out . • R-22 along with other HCFCs were banned and was illegal to use for servicing air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment therefore they had to be replaced if they use HCFC refrigerants.
  • 40.
  • 41. Hazards • R-22 if come in contact with skin, eyes and/or mouth can cause frostbite, drowsiness and confusion, it can also damage the cardiovascular system, respiratory system.
  • 42. Question and answer 1. Name 2 type of AC system. 2. Give one application of each Ac System. 3. Which AC System is most used? 4. Tell one advantage of each system. 5. Give one Disadvantage of each system.

Editor's Notes

  1. A.C. works on the mechanism of refrigerant liquid. This liquid changes to gas and evaporates as it extracts heat from the air around it and in low pressure conditions it again gets converted to liquid and after entering into the normal pressure region this again changes into gas. Any A.C. will comprise of three basic parts; a compressor, a condenser and an evaporator. Compressor and condenser are usually kept outside the house where as an evaporator is kept inside the house. Compressor is the most important part of all the three as it pumps the vapor refrigerant through the system.   In the evaporator, the fluid leaves as low pressure cool gas to reach compressor. The compressor will compress the gas to liquid. As the gas becomes liquid, the molecules are together and their energy is high resulting in high temperature. The working fluid leaves compressor and flows into condenser as hot air which will convert this hot air to low pressurized liquid. One can observe the temperature around outside unit, which is high due to heat dissipated from compressor. The temperature in condenser is very low and this converts the high temperature gas into low pressurized liquid. Through a small hole this pressurized liquid will flow to into evaporator. In this process, the pressure drops and the liquid is converted into low pressure cool air to start the cycle once again. In the process of changing liquid to gas it extracts heat from the air around it. Evaporator has fins and it will blow that cool air into the room. The hot air is lighter than cool air, so it is in the upper part of the room whose heat is used to convert high pressurized liquid into low pressurized gas. This process continues till the room attains the temperature you set. The thermostat present in the A.C. will temporarily stop A.C. for some time; if the room temperature raises again, the thermostat will automatically on the A.C. to set the temperature of your room to your desired level.
