SEMINAR REPORT ON
Index
• Introduction
• Working of air conditioner
• Components of air conditioner
• Types of air conditioner
• Benefits of using air conditioner
2
Introduction
• Air conditioning systems can be used in both
domestic and commercial environments. This
process is most commonly used to achieve a
more comfortable interior environment.
• Air conditioners use a fan to distribute the
conditioned air to an occupied space such as a
building or a car to improve thermal comfort
and indoor air quality.
3
Definition
• Air conditioning is the
process of modifying the
properties of air (i.e.
temperature and humidity) to
more favorable conditions.
4
Working Of An Air Conditioner
• An air conditioner transfers heat from the
inside of a building, where it is not wanted, to
the outside.
• Refrigerant in the system absorbs the excess
heat and is then pumped through a closed
system of piping to an outside coil.
5
A fan blows outside air
over the hot coil,
transferring heat from
the refrigerant to
the outdoor air. Because
the heat is removed from
the indoor air, the indoor
area is cooled.
6
Components Of Air Conditioner
• Compressor
• Condenser
• Evaporator
• Capillary tube
• Indoor fan
• Outdoor fan
7
Types Of Air Conditioners
• Window Air Conditioner
• Split Air Conditioner
• Portable air conditioner
• Central air conditioning
8
Window Air Conditioner
• A window air conditioner unit is fitted in a
window sill or a slot in the room’s wall that is
specially made for it.
• This type is also referred to as a “unitary” air
conditioning system. It blows out cooled air on
one end and ejects heat on the other end.
9
Split Air Conditioner
• The split air conditioner
comprises of two parts:
the outdoor unit and the
indoor unit.
10
• Split air conditioning systems provide the
added convenience of not having to make a
specialized slot in the room wall.
• This type is also referred to as a “packaged
terminal air conditioner.”
11
Portable Air Conditioner
• This is a variation of the
unitary air conditioning
system.
• This type has a mobile air
conditioning system placed
on the floor inside a room.
12
• It discharges exhaust heat through the
exterior wall by means of a hose vent.
• While this type is noisier than other systems,
it can cool even the most stubborn hot rooms.
13
Central Air Conditioning
• This type of system makes
use of a large compressor.
Two separate packaged units
are also used.
14
• The condensing unit is placed outside the
establishment and contains the condensing
fan, compressor, and condenser coil.
• The internal evaporative unit, consisting of the
evaporator coil and expansion valve, is placed
in the plenum of your furnace. This unifies the
ductwork of your air conditioning and heating
systems.
15
Benefits Of Air Conditioning
• Extreme heat has a clear negative impact on
the intellect and on physical activity and the
use of air conditioning can go some way to
rectifying this.
• It improves comfort levels at work and at
leisure.
• It can result in increased physical and
intellectual activity.
16
• A lower temperature reduces the presence of
insects and parasites.
• Lower temperatures mean less
sweating, reducing the risk of dehydration.
• A clean air conditioning system helps exclude
external allergens such as pollens.
• If the air conditioning installation is good, and
if it is well maintained, it renews and improves
air quality.
17
Drawbacks of air conditioning
• Breathing ground for bacteria
• Air conditioning can weaken the immune system
• Excessive use may be bad for the circulatory system
• Air conditioning may cause dizziness- Indoor air
pollution
• Needs plenty of energy
• Can be costly
• Air conditioning can contribute to dry skin
• Contributes to global warming
• May contribute to ozone depletion Maintenance
efforts
17
Conclusion
• As a conclusion, the Recirculating Air conditioning unit may
used to demonstrate and evaluate most of the processes
found in practical air conditioning plant, such as heating,
cooling, humidification, dehumidification air stream.
• Sometime two or more of these process are needed to
bring air to adesired temperature and humidity level.
Various air conditioning processes in psychrometric chart.
• Notice that simple heating and cooling processes appear as
horizontal line on this chart since moisture content of the
air remains constant (ω = constant) during this processes.
• Air is commonly heated and humidified in winter and
cooled and dehumidified in summer. Notice how these
processes appear on the psychrometric.
