Background on Gifted in NC 1996 	NC General Assembly enacts Article 9B, 		requiring 3-year plans July 2007  	Board of Education approval 2007-2010 	Objectives completed July 2009		AIG Program Standards approved 			by State Board of Education 2010-2013  	AIG Plan aligned with state				Standards 2
System-wide Goals for AIG 2010-2013 K-2 Nurturing Program Communication Acceleration Professional Development 3
Standard 1:  Student Identification Redesign the Advanced Academics website (completed and ongoing) Create a presentation kit for K-12 Principals, AIG staff, and Counselors for communication with faculty/staff, students and parents. (completed)  Develop a plan to increase underrepresented populations of gifted learners. (ongoing) Nurture all K-2 students through an explicit program. (13/30 schools have begun USTARS-Plus) Research and implement proven identification procedures for highly gifted learners. (not completed) 4
AIG Child Count 2006-2011 5
Standard 2:  Differentiated Curriculum & Instruction Develop Durham’s Educational Portal Online Tool with video clips, differentiated curriculum units, and tools for teachers to use with gifted and advanced learners. (ongoing) Partner with Education Technology and Media Services to provide training on tools and processes that will enhance instruction and engage learners. (ongoing) Investigate the addition of enrichment opportunities during the school day. (ongoing) Nurture all K-2 students through an explicit program. (13/30 schools have begun USTARS-Plus implementation) 6
Standard 3:  Personnel and Professional Development Continue commitment of training teachers for AIG licensure through North Carolina Central and Duke University. (completed) Empower school-based facilitators/teachers to design and deliver face-to-face and online modules for characteristics of gifted learners, social/emotional needs, acceleration, higher level thinking and questioning. (ongoing) Continue Professional Learning Communities for AIG to plan, implement, and refine effective teaching practices aligned with district goals. (completed and ongoing) Continue commitment of training teachers of Advanced Placement (AP) and Pre-AP.  (planning) 7
Standard 4:  Comprehensive Programming within Total School Community Increase collaboration of teachers of gifted and school staff through the development of communication tools such as presentation toolkit, updated website, and DEPOT resources to ensure systemic communication of the AIG Program. (ongoing) Update and distribute procedures for all AIG processes to AIG Facilitators and Principals. (updates July 2010, 2011, 2012) Establish district acceleration guidelines through implementation of the Iowa Acceleration Scale as a placement option for highly gifted learners. (completed) 8
Standard 5:  Partnerships Create and maintain partnerships with parent advisory groups (PTA, PAGE, PAC, etc), businesses, educational institutions, and community agencies to enhance and enrich services for gifted learners. (ongoing) Establish AIG Steering Committee to develop, implement, and monitor the DPS AIG Plan 2010-2013. (completed) 9
Standard 6:  Program Accountability Conduct school-based programming checks/audits to ensure fidelity of plan implementation. (completed-retool) Conduct surveys, interviews, and focus groups of all stakeholders to inform program improvement. (May ‘11) Implement a feedback link on the Advanced Academics website for ongoing communication. (completed) Produce and publicly disseminate an annual report on the achievement and participation of both AIG and other students in rigorous academic opportunities. (yearly) 10

Standard 1: Student Identification Redesign the Advanced Academics website (completed and ongoing) Create a presentation kit for K-12 Principals, AIG staff, and Counselors for communication with faculty/staff, students and parents. (completed) Develop a plan to increase underrepresented populations of gifted learners. (ongoing) Nurture all K-2 students through an explicit program. (13/30 schools have begun USTARS-Plus) Research and implement proven identification procedures for highly gifted learners. (not completed) 4

Standard 2: Differentiated Curriculum & Instruction Develop Durham’s Educational Portal Online Tool with video clips, differentiated curriculum units, and tools for teachers to use with gifted and advanced learners. (ongoing) Partner with Education Technology and Media Services to provide training on tools and processes that will enhance instruction and engage learners. (ongoing) Investigate the addition of enrichment opportunities during the school day. (ongoing) Nurture all K-2 students through an explicit program.   • 7. Standard 3: Personnel and Professional Development Continue commitment of training teachers for AIG licensure through North Carolina Central and Duke University. (completed) Empower school-based facilitators/teachers to design and deliver face-to-face and online modules for characteristics of gifted learners, social/emotional needs, acceleration, higher level thinking and questioning. (ongoing) Continue Professional Learning Communities for AIG to plan, implement, and refine effective teaching practices aligned with district goals. (completed and ongoing) Continue commitment of training teachers of Advanced Placement (AP) and Pre-AP. (planning) 7

Standard 4: Comprehensive Programming within Total School Community Increase collaboration of teachers of gifted and school staff through the development of communication tools such as presentation toolkit, updated website, and DEPOT resources to ensure systemic communication of the AIG Program. (ongoing) Update and distribute procedures for all AIG processes to AIG Facilitators and Principals. (updates July 2010, 2011, 2012) Establish district acceleration guidelines through implementation of the Iowa Acceleration Scale as a placement option for highly gifted learners. (completed) 8

Standard 5: Partnerships Create and maintain partnerships with parent advisory groups (PTA, PAGE, PAC, etc), businesses, educational institutions, and community agencies to enhance and enrich services for gifted learners. (ongoing) Establish AIG Steering Committee to develop, implement, and monitor the DPS AIG Plan 2010-2013. (completed) 9
  • 10. Standard 6: Program Accountability Conduct school-based programming checks/audits to ensure fidelity of plan implementation. (completed-retool) Conduct surveys, interviews, and focus groups of all stakeholders to inform program improvement. (May ‘11) Implement a feedback link on the Advanced Academics website for ongoing communication. (completed) Produce and publicly disseminate an annual report on the achievement and participation of both AIG and other students in rigorous academic opportunities. (yearly) 10
