THE CITY AND ITS GROWTH
•

The city of Ahmedabad,
founded in 1411 AD as a
walled city on the eastern
bank of the river Sabarmati
• The seventh largest
metropolis in India, with a
population of 6 million
(2011) within an area of 466
sq.km
• Its population is likely to
rise to 11 Million by 2035.
While the area is likely to
increase to 1000 sq. km by
2035

• Only 9.5 percent of the total area is under transportation network as
against standard norm of 15-18 percent.

Travel Characteristics
Vehicles
•

The district, which accommodates 11% of the state population accounts
for about 21% of the vehicles registered in the State.

YET
• 31% still does not own motorized vehicles.
• Of these 8% do not own any vehicle while another 23% own only
bicycles.
• About 60% own two wheelers and another only 10% own cars.
Public Transport

AMTS has been providing public transport facilities since 1947.
As on Feb 2008, there are 538 buses operated by private operators and
484 by AMTS taking the total fleet to 1022. Daily passengers (daily
boarding) is up to 936,886.

In spite of this

There was need of another way for Inter-city Transport for the growing
city.
Hence, Plan of BRTS was proposed by AMC
BRTS PLAN – NETWORK
• The BRT plan consisted of development of 217 km of BRT corridors in
three phases.
• While selecting roads along potential BRT corridor, Connect busy places
but avoid busy roads had been the policy.
• Major access road has been widened to 30 meter width. Similarly AMC
has removed encroachments from the road alignments in the
intermediary zones.
• These opened up several opportunities for BRT to connect important
destinations.
Phasing

Phase 1 has 58.3 km identified BRT corridor.
The corridors selected as part of phase 1 were mainly the rings in
Ahmedabad.
Phase II has 30.5 km of identified BRT corridor
Dariapur Darwaza - Kalupur - Sarangpur will have Elevated corridor of 4.5
km

ROADWAY DESIGN
The corridors identified for BRT under phase I and II have different existing
RoWs (Right of Ways). Thus, length of corridors differ resulting in difference
of cross section at various lengths which is as follows:

Bus stops are constructed such that
average
distance
between
2
consecutive stations varies between
500 to 700 metres.
The size of a single bus shelter with
two bus bays is 28.6 m by 2.5 m.
The two bays, each measuring 12 m
in length has been divided by a 4.6 M
wide walkway.
The bus stop near intersections shall
be accessed using zebra crossings
provided at intersection and the 2.0
m footpath between BRT lane and
mixed traffic lane.

THE CITY AND ITS GROWTH • The city of Ahmedabad, founded in 1411 AD as a walled city on the eastern bank of the river Sabarmati • The seventh largest metropolis in India, with a population of 6 million (2011) within an area of 466 sq.km • Its population is likely to rise to 11 Million by 2035. While the area is likely to increase to 1000 sq. km by 2035
  • 4. Land Use Land Use in AUDA Land Use in AMC • Only 9.5 percent of the total area is under transportation network as against standard norm of 15-18 percent.
  • 5. Earlier Transportation System and Travel Characteristics Vehicles • The district, which accommodates 11% of the state population accounts for about 21% of the vehicles registered in the State. YET • 31% still does not own motorized vehicles. • Of these 8% do not own any vehicle while another 23% own only bicycles. • About 60% own two wheelers and another only 10% own cars.
  • 6. Public Transport • • AMTS has been providing public transport facilities since 1947. As on Feb 2008, there are 538 buses operated by private operators and 484 by AMTS taking the total fleet to 1022. Daily passengers (daily boarding) is up to 936,886. In spite of this • • There was need of another way for Inter-city Transport for the growing city. Hence, Plan of BRTS was proposed by AMC
  • 7. BRTS PLAN – NETWORK
  • 8. • The BRT plan consisted of development of 217 km of BRT corridors in three phases. • While selecting roads along potential BRT corridor, Connect busy places but avoid busy roads had been the policy. • Major access road has been widened to 30 meter width. Similarly AMC has removed encroachments from the road alignments in the intermediary zones. • These opened up several opportunities for BRT to connect important destinations.
  • 9. Phasing • • • • Phase 1 has 58.3 km identified BRT corridor. The corridors selected as part of phase 1 were mainly the rings in Ahmedabad. Phase II has 30.5 km of identified BRT corridor Dariapur Darwaza - Kalupur - Sarangpur will have Elevated corridor of 4.5 km Proposed Phase III • Connecting Ahmedabad to Gift City and Gandhinagar
  • 10. ROADWAY DESIGN The corridors identified for BRT under phase I and II have different existing RoWs (Right of Ways). Thus, length of corridors differ resulting in difference of cross section at various lengths which is as follows: 24m Wide Consisting of 2 central Bus lanes, 4 lanes for Mixed traffic and wide pedestrian pathway
  • 13. BUS STATION DESIGN AND VEHICLE TECHNOLOGY Bus Station • • • • Bus stops are constructed such that average distance between 2 consecutive stations varies between 500 to 700 metres. The size of a single bus shelter with two bus bays is 28.6 m by 2.5 m. The two bays, each measuring 12 m in length has been divided by a 4.6 M wide walkway. The bus stop near intersections shall be accessed using zebra crossings provided at intersection and the 2.0 m footpath between BRT lane and mixed traffic lane.

  • 16. FAILURE OF DELHI BRTS • • • • • • • They built it in the wrong place. They started a "trial run" when the thing was half-finished. They didn't increase the number / frequency of buses. They didn't link the thing to the Metro. There was no stick and no carrot. Lack of enforcement of BRT lanes. Location of station platforms.
