OpenContrail is a complete solution for Software Defined Networking (SDN). Its relatively new approach to network virtualization in data centers utilizes the overlay networking technology in order to achieve full decoupling of the physical infrastructure from the tenant’s logical configurations.
This presentation describes the software architecture of the system and its functional partitioning. A special emphasis is put on a compute node components: the vRouter kernel module and the vRouter Agent. Also, selected implementation details are presented in greater details along with an analysis of their impact on an overall system’s exceptional scalability and great performance.

Many OPNFV developers building Openstack clouds at scale have a “love-hate” relationship with OVS. They love the flexibility and elasticity offered by a distributed virtual switch operating within each server, but hate the reality of first-gen OVS implementations well-known to be a bottleneck for cloud network performance and scalability. As performance-sensitive VNFs keep pushing for higher data forwarding performance across the NFV network infrastructure, it becomes critical to improve OVS performance without compromising flexibility, network programmability, and cost.
In this session, Mellanox will present a novel way to offload the entire OVS dataplane onto the embedded switch in the server NIC. This approach can not only boost server I/O performance to near line-rate, be it 10G, 40G, or 100G, but also doing so at a fraction of the CPU load needed by existing OVS implementation.
Failure happens, and we can learn from it. We need to think about backups, but also verification of them. We should definitely make use of replication and think about automatic failover. And security is key, but don't forget that encryption is now available in MySQL, Percona Server and MariaDB Server.

Bio
Chiradeep Vittal is a Distinguished Engineer in the Converged Infrastructure Group at Citrix where he has technology leadership responsibilities around Citrix Cloud Platform, Citrix Lifecycle Manager and Citrix Workspace Pod. He is also a Project Management Committee member of the Apache CloudStack Project. At cloud.com (acquired by Citrix), he was a founding engineer, often tasked with the thorny details of virtualized networking and storage. Prior to cloud.com, he worked at several Silicon Valley startups in various architectural roles.
Chiradeep has a B.Tech in Computer Science from IIT, Bombay and a M.Sc from the University of Alberta. He has spoken / presented at several conferences, including CloudStack Collab, LISA, OSCON, ONS, SDN Summit and LinuxCon.
