3. Introduction
•
“Pharmaceutical Processing is the process of drug
manufacturing and can be divided into a range of unit
operations such as blending, granulation, milling, coating,
tablet pressing, filling and others.”
• “A process automation or automation system (PAS) is used to
automatically control a process such as chemical, oil refineries,
paper and pulp factories.”.
• The PAS often uses a network to interconnectsensors,
controllers, operator terminalsand actuators. A PAS is often
based on open standards in contrast to a DCS (distributed
control system), which is traditionally proprietary.”

4. Pharmaceutical Manufacturing process
• The pharmaceutical manufacturing process is typically made up of a
combination of specific unit processes choosen according to physical
and chemical characteristics of active pharmaceutical ingredients.
1.Dry granulation
2.Powder blending
3.High Shear and wet granulation
4.Fluid Bed granulation
5.Hot melt extrusion
6.Drying
7. Pharmaceuticals Milling

7. • Mixing – It is process in which two or more ingredients in
separate or roughly mixed condition are treated so that each
particles of any one ingredients is as nearly as possible
adjecnt to a particle of each of the other ingredients.
• There are various types of mixers are as follows,
• 1.Lodige mixer
• 2.Diosna mixer
• 3.Gral mixer
10. • These types of mixer are high speed blenders capable of
Blending pharmaceutical powder and wet massing within the
same equipment.
• It also produce agglomerated granular particle that are ready
for drying.
11. • For compression of granule roller compactoris used
• It is capable of producing as much as 500kg per hr or more of
compacted ribbon like material
• Roller revolve towards each other by hydraulic ram forcing
One of the roller against the other .
• The compaction forces of the roller compactoris controlled by
3 variable
• 1. Hydraulic pressure exterted on the compaction rolls
• 2. The rotational speed of the compaction rolls
• 3. The rotational speed of feed screw.
13. • For wet and dry compressionof granule there is multiple
station punching machine is their .
• In olden days single station punching machine is used
14. Tablet coatings
• Coating as a means of masking the taste of medicines.
• Coating is of two types
• 1.sugar coatings
• 2.film coating
15. • Advanced automated coating Euipment are as
follow,
• 1. Conventional pan system
• 2.perforated pan system
• 3.fluidized bed coater.
16. • Conventional pan system – in this coating solution are applied
to tablet by spraying the material onto the rotating tablet bed
.
• A significant improvement in the drying efficiency of standard
coating pan is achieved by,
• 1.pellegrinj pan
• 2. Immersion sword
• 3 immersion tube system
18. • Standard coating pan contain
• 1. Circular metal pan
• 2. Heated air by ducts
• 3.Coating solution is applied to table by spraying
19. • The use of automizing system to spray the liquid coating
material on tablet produce faster and more even distribution
of solution, so this improvement in drying efficiency of
standard coating pan is achieved by
• 1.Pellegrini
• 2.immersion sword
• 3. immersion tube .
20. Perforated pan system
• This type of equipment consistsof perforated drum that is
rotated on its horizontal axis .
• Drying air is directed into the drum
• Example of perforated pan are as,
• 1. Accela – cota
• 2. Hi coater system
• 3. Driacoater pan
• 4. Glatt coater.
22. • Perforated pan coater are efficient drying system with high
coating capacity and can be completely automated for both
sugar and film coating processes.
23. Fluidized bed system
Fluidized bed coaters are also highly
efficient drying system.
There are two basic types of spray system
1.high pressure airless
2.Low pressure air - atomized
24. • Advantages of automated system
• 1. High production rates
• 2. Efficient use of material
• 3. Better product quality
• 4. Shoter work days for labour
• 5. Greater control and consistency of product quality
• Disadvantages of automated system
• 1. High capital expenditure
• 2. High level of Machine maintenance
• 3. Relocation of workers for find other work
25. • Conclusion – the advance Technique is helpful to improve
the quality and quantity of the product . It reduces the cost of
production.
