ADJECTIVE
Is a word that describes noun (proper or
common), or a pronoun with:
-what kind?
-which one?
-how many?
-how much?
EXERCISE 1
Copy the adjectives used in the following
statements.
1. I listen to mellow songs before I sleep.
2. The disgusting smell caused chaos.
3. Her blue basket was stolen earlier.
4. The eye-sore of this poor country is maltreated.
5. Spicy pizza is sold secretly.
6. Brilliant colors are removed form the list.
7. Orange is very juicy.
8. Reno, calm and decent, wins the first prize.

DESCRIPTIVE and LIMITING
ADJECTIVES
1. Descriptive Adjectives
• describe the characteristics of a noun or
pronoun. It may be the size or quality of the
modified noun or pronoun.
A. Proper Adjective
B. Common Adjective
C. Compound Adjective
D. Participles
A. Proper Adjective
• is formed from a proper noun which at times is
formed with the use of suffix endings like–n, -
an, -ian, -ese, and –ish. Proper adjectives begin
with a capital letter and are used as modifiers.
Examples:
1. I idolized the Korean performers.
2. A Japanese cuisine is served for dinner.
3. The British council rejected the new law.
4. Hindu literature is my favorite.
B. Common Adjective• expresses the ordinary qualities of a noun.
Examples:
1. The white sand of Camiguin amazed me.
2. I need to breathe a fresh air.
3. I want to be soaked in a rest pool during winter.
4. The school registrar holds documents of students.
C. Compound Adjective• is made up of more than one word which may
either be hyphenated or written as combined
words.
Examples:
1. The five-storey building collapsed during
earthquake.
2. An earthquake drill will be conducted today.
D. Participles• may either be present or past participle. Present
participles end with –ing, while past participles
end with –n, en, -d, or, ed.
Examples:
1. The setting sun symbolizes my survival of the
day.
2. My broken heart needs time to mend.
3. Her painted wall is alluring.

DEFINITE – “the” ship
INDEFINITE – “an invitation, a plane”
The ship in the blue ocean vanished abruptly.
I gave you an invitation, right?
A plane has crashed.
B. Numerical Adjectives
• denote the exact number, rank, or position of a
noun.
Cardinal – zero, one, two, ten
Ordinal – first, third, seventh
My sister gave me five hundred Dirhams.
Last Christmas, was my first visit in Dubai.
C. Pronominal Adjectives
• These are pronouns as modifiers, and have five
classes:
a. Demonstrative Adjectives (this, that, those, these)
point out a definite person, place, or thing.
That student is my son.
These students are my children.
b. Possessive Adjectives (his, her, our, my, your, its,
their) denote ownership of a noun.
Will you be my wife?
Their noise annoys me.
c. Distributive Adjectives (each, every, either,
neither) refer to each person, place, orthing
separately.
Each bag needs an owner.
Every student in this class is special.
d. Indefinite Adjectives (all, another, any, few,
many, several, some) point out no particular
person, place or thing.
Several lessons are not essential to life.
Many teachers are exhausted.
