Topic: Adjective and its Types

Adjective: Definition
• a word which is used to modify or qualify a noun or pronoun.
• a word which adds something to the meaning of a noun or pronoun.
For example:
i. He is a good boy.
ii. The boy is good.

Attributive Adjectives
• an adjective which is used before the noun it describes
• used attributively
For example:
i. She is an intelligent student.
ii. Zahid is an honest boy.

Predicative Adjectives
• an adjective which is used after a verb and a noun and forms part of the predicate
• used predicatively.
For example:
i. Zahid is intelligent.
ii. The boy is good.

Adjectives of Quality
• show the kind or quality of a person, place or a thing
• answer the question “of what kind?”
For example:
i. He is a good boy.
ii. She is a brave girl.

Adjectives of Quality
Proper Adjectives:
• formed from proper nouns
• classed with adjectives of quality.
For example:
i. Kohli is an Indian batsman.
ii. M. Amir is a Pakistani bowler.

Adjectives of Quantity
• show the quantity of something/noun
• show how much of a thing is meant
• answer the question “how much?”
For example:
i. I ate some rice.
ii. I showed much patience.

Adjectives of Number
• show how many persons or things are meant, or
• in what order a person or a thing stands
• answer the question “how many?”
For example:
i. Six boys were present in the class.
ii. All students were absent yesterday.

Adjectives of Number
Difference between Adj. of Number and Adj. of Quantity:
• Adj. of number come before countables
• Adj. of quantity come before uncountables
For example:
Adj. of Number Adj. of Quantity
i. Some students
ii. Any person
i. Some patience
ii. Any water

Kinds of Numeral Adjectives:
1. Definite Numeral Adjectives
• exact number of person, place or a thing
• order or sequence of things in a series
For example:
i. One student
ii. Third girl in the row

Kinds of Definite Numeral Adjectives
Ordinals: show the order or sequence of things
For example:
i. the first student in the class
ii. third girl in the second row

Kinds of Definite Numeral Adjectives
Cardinals: show the exact number of things
For example:
i. one student
ii. three boys

Kinds of Numeral Adjectives
3. Distributive Adjectives
• refer to every person, place or thing of a number, or
• which refers to each one of a number
For example:
i. Each student must take the paper.
ii. Either pen will do.

Kinds of Numeral Adjectives
2. Indefinite Numeral Adjectives
• do not show/denote the exact number of person, place or thing
For example:
i. All mangoes were eaten.
ii. Many/some/few students were absent today.
