4. Expansion through Reading
• Reading is one of the best ways of expanding vocabulary.
• Highlight familiar vocabulary in one color and the unfamiliar vocabulary with another color
• Check unfamiliar words in dictionary
• Memorize and practice the new words

5. Expansion through repetition
• Repeat, repeat and just repeat.
• Repetition has a powerful impact on learning.
• The more times we are exposed to a word, the stronger our understanding becomes.
• It takes a minimum fifteen encounters with a new word for a student to understand and apply the word
independently.

The very best way to learn and teach vocabulary is in context.
Do not select individual words, teach words in context.
Teaching vocabulary “in context” is more effective.

7. Expansion through Vocabulary Trees
A graphic organizer which can be useful in building vocabulary.
Used for finding relationships and making connections between groups of vocabulary words
Made up of a trunk, roots, branches, and leaves.
The trunk -- write the main concept or a key term
The branches -- hold related terms, ideas, or examples.

8. Expansion through Word Walls
Word wall is systematically organized collection of key words from a unit of study.
Word walls receive a prominent place in a classroom environment.
They are usually front and center, large and easy to see.
These word walls are great places to put high frequency words throughout the year.

9. Expansion through Root Words
Focus first on teaching roots.
Roots can help in understanding new word’s meaning.
So, before teaching them the words:
• “Useful”
• “Helpless” etc.
Tech them about the words:
• “Use”
• “Help” etc.
They know the meaning of root words; they will be able to understand words having prefixes and suffixes.

10. Expansion through prefixes & suffixes
Learn common prefixes and suffixes
Help in enriching their vocabulary.
• ‘ir- ’ and ‘in-’ are negative prefixes
• knows the meaning of the words ‘regular’ and ‘correct’
• ‘irregular’ and ’incorrect’.

11. Expansion through synonyms & antonyms
Synonyms and antonyms are fun and lively ways to learn new vocabulary and improve English language
skills e.g.
• Synonyms of “intelligence”: bright, smart, gifted, etc
• Antonyms of “intelligence”: stupid, dim, slow, dull, etc
