: A group of related sentences about a
single topic

4. English borrows lots of words from other
languages. For example, English speakers often say
adios, which is Spanish for goodbye. English
speakers also use words borrowed from French,
beef and pork to describe cow and pig meat.
English
Korean also borrows words from English like bus
and orange juice.
Problem – Topic is ‘English’ in the paragraph but last
sentence is about a new topic ‘Korean’. It is not right to put
two different topics in a paragraph.
5. Two main ‘jobs’ of topic sentence:
1) Names the topic
2) Gives the controlling idea1
Topic Sentence
1 Controlling idea tells what the paragraph will say about the topic
6. Good Topic Sentences
Brown = Topic
Blue = Controlling idea
Sejong University has many students from other
countries.
Sejong University has many talented students from
many different majors.
There is a variety of students in Sejong University.
7. Bad Topic Sentences
Red = Topic
Blue = Controlling idea
Sejong University is close to Children Grand Park.
Sejong University is located in Gwangjin-gu.
The foundation and history of Sejong University.

Very long topic(acceptable) but has NO controlling idea
