Acute intussusception is the invagination of one segment of the intestine within the adjacent one. The main causes are idiopathic (70-95%) or associated with gastroenteritis. Clinically, it presents with abdominal pain, vomiting and bloody stools. Differential diagnoses include acute enterocolitis. Management involves history, examination, investigations and non-operative hydrostatic reduction is the first line treatment, with surgery if this fails or is contraindicated due to complications like obstruction or peritonitis.
