Activities outside university related
to my law skills module and
experience
This section is dedicated to various forms of task, society, fairs and programmes i
have undertaken during my level 4 studying. This will build a picture of my ability
of extensive research and build up my CV portfolio.
Law society and mooting meeting
• I have attended the first meeting on Tuesday
9th October where my networking experience
had developed. I also had the opportunity to
find out about the balloon debate and
Sheffield law fair which is to take place on
November 21st which i will be looking forward
to attending.
Balloon debate
• I received positive feedback of my participation in the
university balloon debate other law students. I was
joint runner up and I will now be taking part in the
internal moot. I was the character Carol Volderman for
5 minutes debating why I should be saved. my
experience in taking part has developed my awareness
not just orally but the socially about the techniques of
debating. It was a key experience as it has given me a
first real feel of the types of debates I will be taking
part in during my time on the law level 4 course. Next
slide is my attachment of the speech and feedback I
have received which speak for itself .
Balloon Debate Speech:
• Most people have the wrong idea about me because I've been living a very private. The photo shoot glitz and TV studio make-up isn't the real me. I
spend most days at home in Bristol in jeans and a T-shirt running around after the kids or shopping in the Co-op. Once you have children it's love
without bounds. You would die for them in an instant, without question. How can you better that? There is a school of thought that when you hit 40
you should have a perm and wear skirts two inches below the knee. Bugger that! I'm not offending anyone. What is wrong with being a bit lively?
How you look has become ridiculously disproportionate to what you do. Critics are more harsh on female presenters. For now I'm building up stories
for the retirement home!
• I appeared on Countdown where I revealed my intellectual ability by carrying out fast and accurate arithmetical calculations as part of the game. I
agreed to head a task force established by the Conservative Party to look at the teaching of mathematics. I have a passion for maths and I am to lead
this task force so we can get the answers right
• Mathematical knowledge is the most precious gift an education can bestow. Mathematics is ‘the only truly universal language’. Without a secure
understanding of mathematics then musical composition and architectural design are impossible. Chemistry, physics, biology, geography, economics
and even poetry rest on the foundations mathematics provides.
• Critical personal finance decisions, from choosing a mortgage to thinking about pensions, depend on individuals being secure in the basics of
numeracy. Understanding the decisions governments make; on debt, deficits and the design of taxes is impossible without a grounding in
mathematics. Mastery of mathematics is key to success in the modern economy. The better educated a country and its citizens, the more likely they
are to prosper.
• We must reform. We need to reform teacher training to get even more talented people into the classroom, we need a more rigorous curriculum
which matches the world's best, and we need exams which equip our students for the society and economy of the future.
• A large number of school textbooks have been published under my name. I publicly launched my new commercial venture of an online mathematics
coaching system for 4 – 12 year old children under the name of the MathsFactor.
• I was awarded The British Inspiration Award for my contribution to making our nation such a success. All I wanted to do was put together one of the
best home maths systems in the world, and that's what I've done. I've loved numbers since I was two or three, and I get really excited about them.
Now, I'm allowing myself to get excited. Whereas on countdown I had to put a lid on my thrill for numbers.
• Turning 50 changed me and I'm far more accepting of myself. Change is one of my favourite words. You have the key to change the education
system, the learning environment and the prospect of the future British economy. That’s only if you, you, you and you change your views on me and
consider to save me in order for me to continue this journey of saving our British nations mathematic curriculum system.
Feedback on Balloon debate speechHi,
Thanks for contacting me, I was told earlier that you came to visit the office, but have been unable to get in contact with you due to there being three
Kirandeep Kaurs on the uni system. Before I get to the feed back I would like to say that we, the judges, were impressed by the skills displayed during the
balloon debate and would like to invite you to a chat about mooting sometime soon after reading week. If you're interested in this, would you mind letting
me know a time and day you'll be free that the four of us, you and us three, can meet to discuss it?
As to the feed back it has to be said that you did very well.
• Firstly the fact that you didn't have a script or notes to prompt you, and that you remembered your facts was very impressive though
maybe just a single side or two of notes would be worth using for those just in case scenarios.
• You showed very good research and made some very good points.
• We found that you had, on the whole, very good eye contact, which helped keep us engaged.
• If I, personally, had to find fault, it was that, at times, you could be slightly monotonous, particularly on the very factual points. The
important thing about talking about facts is to be certain to keep the judges engaged on them, and to keep the focus upon you.
• There was the occasional however, as with almost all participants, I'm more than certain it was nerves causing it.
As I said earlier, you did exceptionally well, and though not released, you and another competitor were joint runners up, which is why we've asked you to
talk to us at a convenient time for you.
I hope that this is of use to you, and any questions feel free to get in contact with myself, Ellie or Susan, who have both been copied into this email.
Regards,
Matt
Hi Kirandeep,
Well done! We were really impressed by the skills you displayed and would very much urge you to take part in the moots, because you clearly
have a strong foundation (on which we can build on). We will give you more feedback in person.
As for my free slots (to be confirmed by the other 2 judges), are monday 11-12 and 14-15; Tuesday after 10 and, Friday all day.
Regards
Susan

• RE: Welcome Letter
• Virtual Internship (New York) Program
• Winter Session
•
• Study Experience Enjoy!
Please read this letter carefully as it has some very important information that is crucial to your success and experience of the Virtual Internship program.
• Thank you for deciding to spend some of your time on the Virtual Internship (New York) program this winter – we are delighted that you have chosen to participate in a Web Legal
program this year.
• We strive to do three things:
• (1) Ensure that your study with us is beneficial to your legal career and truly helpful to your future prospects;
• (2) Ensure your experience is engaging, informative and safe;
• (3) Ensure you enjoy yourself whilst on the program.
• Obviously, the more you engage with the program and materials the more you will take away from it. You will be studying with other students from the UK and hopefully you will make a
lot of contacts and friends who can assist you in your future. As a law student, you are looking to enter a profession which has a very close knit community. The people you meet on the
program may very well be the associates, supervisors or partners you will work with in the future. The more contacts you have in the industry potentially the more successful you will be.
• The Web Legal Team is looking forward to instructing you.
• If you require any assistance before starting the program please do not hesitate to contact myself, Elliot Hammer, and I will be pleased to try my best to help you.
• Your Responsibilities
• Whilst we take every care to ensure the program is suitable, safe and enjoyable, it is ultimately your responsibility to ensure that you do the following:
• Disabilities: If you have a disability then please inform me as soon as possible so that we can ensure suitable arrangements are made.
• Refer a friend discount: If you refer a friend to the course you will be eligible for a 5% reduction on the program price! You are only eligible for this reduction once your friend pays the
full amount and is confirmed on the program.
• Other program discount: If you wish to go on an additional Web Legal program either this year or next year, you are eligible for a 5% discount on the program price! This is in
conjunction with the refer a friend discount. There are certain terms and conditions in relation to this as not all our programs are eligible. Please ask me whether a discount is available
on our different programs.
• If you have any questions or queries in relation to the Virtual Internship program please do not hesitate to contact me, Elliot Hammer, on staff@weblegaleducation.com
•
• Kind Regards
• Yours sincerely

Internal Moot
• I am now preparing material for the Internal
Moot. I will also be attending an meeting to
discuss further my feedback on the balloon
debate I took part in and how this will help me
further prepare for the Internal Moot. The
attachment shows the question I will be dealing
with and demonstrating an argument on the
point of law I am particularly interested in
arguing is 'in directing them that an act
constituting attempted murder has been
committed'.
West law basic and advanced training
completed successfully
• Certificate is under the All Evidence Material for
Skills Attached.
• I have completed both the basic and advance
West Law training and am pleased that I have
achieved two certificates on the completing of
my training. this will show to both future and
present employers and institutions I have the
skills for legal research. I will be receiving my
certificates in less than 6weeks this will go along
with my other achievement and will also be
added to my CV skills.
Personal tutor meeting
• I have had my personal tutor meeting and I
have identified areas of improvement and
understand how the course will be assessed
regarding mooting.
I attended London web legal seminars
• I went to the two day seminars in London. I
understood the skills that will be required to
complete the tasks in the internship.
I completed lexis basic training and
passed
• I'm looking forward to completing the
advance training. Certificate is under the All
Evidence Material for Skills Attached.
I succeeded into second round of
internal moot competition
• The experience was valuable and I am now
waiting for round 2 details.
My second task from law firm in New
York (virtual internship)
• I have just had a Skype talk with Elliot form
web legal education.
I taken part in second round internal
moot and waiting for the results
• The feedback I received was valuable to my
experience and start of my career path on law.
I will be waiting to hear the results if have
succeeded to round 3 or if I will be given the
opportunity to take mentor classes to expand
on my legal advocacy skills required for a
successful moot.
I received feedback about the internal
moot competition
• Overall I did well and I was told techniques to
improve my mooting skills. I will take this
advice on board and understand for future
competitions and ensure to reflect my
feedback advice. Unfortunately it was for
these reasons I didn't go through to round 3
semi finals, however the experience has
ensured I will improve on my techniques of
putting forward my moots.
I have booked my personal tutor
meeting
• I have variety of questions and reflection so
far on my course to ask. these range from
exam dates and course assessment grading
criteria.
My CV updated
• I have now reflected more of my skills and
activities on my CV.
Second personal tutor meeting
• This meeting highlighted and reflected what i
need to do in order to prepare myself for the
upcoming assessments. No issues were raised
in terms of under progressing as I am on
target from my first tutor meeting in October
therefore and therefore I am sticking to the
action plan to ensure I consistently progress
towards the end of the first year studying law
llb.
I have signed up for mentor moot
• This will enable me to practice my mooting
skills and prep for the summative criminal and
skills moot. I feel this is vital for preparation as
this style of feedback is vital from mentors as
it is hard to receive feedback when assessing
your own self. therefore feedback from the
mentor will highlight what I need to improve
on and particularly if my advocacy skills are
correctly carried out during the moot.
I taken part in the mentor moot and
received feedback
• In order to prepare myself for the mentor moot, I have
taken part in signing up for the mentor moot classes as this
will ensured I receive feedback on what I need to work on
for the final summative moots and ensure that I understand
my strengths thus making me confident. the feedback I
received was overall good for level 4 standard moots and
that although I did perform the advocacy skills required I
should avoid hand movements due to nerves. therefore I
was advise to hold my folder on my left arm this will then
help me avoid the hand movements otherwise it will
distract attention from my submissions as they are the
important part of the assessments that will be assessed.
I updated my CV with suggestions
from my personal tutor
• I sent an email to my personal tutor to check
how my CV is looking as I taken on he
feedback in my second personal tutor meeting
to make certain amendments. This is so I can
hand out my CV to the law firms which will be
at the law fair at BCU.
I sent my letter writing task to the New
York law firm (virtual internship)
• Overall this task had involved using skills of analysis
and research. this was a different but similar to normal
research tasks required on the law llb level 4
programme this is because although the principles of
apply the law to the facts was same as i used in my
assessments at BCU, the law I was dealing with was
American legal system. Therefore it taken me a while to
understand what the factual situation was concerning
and how I would apply the American legal system and
principles to the situation. I have attached the
completed assessment of the letter writing task and
will now be waiting for feedback and my final grade.
I went to the law fair at BCU
• I been given my CV's out to the law fairs and
discussed various questions I had regarding the
law firms speciality in more detail therefore i can
have a better understanding if would fit in the
law firms. This event also highlighted the fierce
competition of securing a work placement and
vacation schemes therefore I will ensure that I
start looking at deadline dates for these
applications and ensure I spend more time on
applications and skills that would stand me out in
comparison to other applicants.
I attended one of Lexis workshops
regarding how to improve your grade
in exams• This workshop with Emma Noble was definitely useful I realise how
important it is to evaluate the law under discussion in the question
and not just simply state and apply the law. She showed me range
of ways to use secondary sources form journal articles, Hulsbury
sources, and PSL - she also gave me useful advice not just for this
years exams but also tips with my application when I will be
applying for work placements this year and in my second year. I
have definitely more confidence in now beginning my exam
preparation as I understand I will need to start from textbooks (and
not just stick to one but view others) then move on to lexis to use
relevant case summaries to understand legal theories how to apply
them in the exam and then reference journal articles to evaluate
the grey areas in the law under discussion.
My Virtual Internship Grade
• I received an overall Grade B for the internship
tasks set and coursework I'm pleased with my
feedback and understand in order to receive
an higher grade of A I should have shown
more precision and evaluation. This will go on
my CV and has added to my skills which I will
demonstrate to future employers.
Elected Second Year Representative of
Mooting Society
• I have been informed I will be the second year
representative for the mooting society in my second
year of the law llb degree. This has definitely made me
confident as I completed a manifesto explaining why I
should be a second year representative for the mooting
society therefore I feel happy to be elected which has
built my confidence of demonstrating the skills I have. I
will ensure in my second year of studying the law
degree that I attend all mooting society meetings, keep
on top of all information and key events that need to
be notified to other second year law students and
ensure I perform my duties well as a second year
representative for the mooting society.
My CV for employers
• I have uploaded my CV under the All Evidence
Material for Skills.
My Cover Letter for employers
• I have uploaded my cover letter under the All
Evidence Material for Skills.
Skills Audit Exercise
• I have uploaded my Skills Audit Exercise under
the All Evidence Material for Skills Attached is the
Skills audit I have completed in order to prepare
myself to review my strength and weaknesses. Its
important to understand what skills that will help
me stand out from other candidates when listing
these skills and experience on my CV and
Covering letter (as well as interviews). I realise
the skills that will make me attract a niche market
of employers is language skills as I know 4
languages (including English) therefore I can
communicate with the South Asian community.

Activities outside university related to my law skills

  • 1. Activities outside university related to my law skills module and experience This section is dedicated to various forms of task, society, fairs and programmes i have undertaken during my level 4 studying. This will build a picture of my ability of extensive research and build up my CV portfolio.
  • 2. Law society and mooting meeting • I have attended the first meeting on Tuesday 9th October where my networking experience had developed. I also had the opportunity to find out about the balloon debate and Sheffield law fair which is to take place on November 21st which i will be looking forward to attending.
  • 3. Balloon debate • I received positive feedback of my participation in the university balloon debate other law students. I was joint runner up and I will now be taking part in the internal moot. I was the character Carol Volderman for 5 minutes debating why I should be saved. my experience in taking part has developed my awareness not just orally but the socially about the techniques of debating. It was a key experience as it has given me a first real feel of the types of debates I will be taking part in during my time on the law level 4 course. Next slide is my attachment of the speech and feedback I have received which speak for itself .
  • 4. Balloon Debate Speech: • Most people have the wrong idea about me because I've been living a very private. The photo shoot glitz and TV studio make-up isn't the real me. I spend most days at home in Bristol in jeans and a T-shirt running around after the kids or shopping in the Co-op. Once you have children it's love without bounds. You would die for them in an instant, without question. How can you better that? There is a school of thought that when you hit 40 you should have a perm and wear skirts two inches below the knee. Bugger that! I'm not offending anyone. What is wrong with being a bit lively? How you look has become ridiculously disproportionate to what you do. Critics are more harsh on female presenters. For now I'm building up stories for the retirement home! • I appeared on Countdown where I revealed my intellectual ability by carrying out fast and accurate arithmetical calculations as part of the game. I agreed to head a task force established by the Conservative Party to look at the teaching of mathematics. I have a passion for maths and I am to lead this task force so we can get the answers right • Mathematical knowledge is the most precious gift an education can bestow. Mathematics is ‘the only truly universal language’. Without a secure understanding of mathematics then musical composition and architectural design are impossible. Chemistry, physics, biology, geography, economics and even poetry rest on the foundations mathematics provides. • Critical personal finance decisions, from choosing a mortgage to thinking about pensions, depend on individuals being secure in the basics of numeracy. Understanding the decisions governments make; on debt, deficits and the design of taxes is impossible without a grounding in mathematics. Mastery of mathematics is key to success in the modern economy. The better educated a country and its citizens, the more likely they are to prosper. • We must reform. We need to reform teacher training to get even more talented people into the classroom, we need a more rigorous curriculum which matches the world's best, and we need exams which equip our students for the society and economy of the future. • A large number of school textbooks have been published under my name. I publicly launched my new commercial venture of an online mathematics coaching system for 4 – 12 year old children under the name of the MathsFactor. • I was awarded The British Inspiration Award for my contribution to making our nation such a success. All I wanted to do was put together one of the best home maths systems in the world, and that's what I've done. I've loved numbers since I was two or three, and I get really excited about them. Now, I'm allowing myself to get excited. Whereas on countdown I had to put a lid on my thrill for numbers. • Turning 50 changed me and I'm far more accepting of myself. Change is one of my favourite words. You have the key to change the education system, the learning environment and the prospect of the future British economy. That’s only if you, you, you and you change your views on me and consider to save me in order for me to continue this journey of saving our British nations mathematic curriculum system.
  • 5. Feedback on Balloon debate speechHi, Thanks for contacting me, I was told earlier that you came to visit the office, but have been unable to get in contact with you due to there being three Kirandeep Kaurs on the uni system. Before I get to the feed back I would like to say that we, the judges, were impressed by the skills displayed during the balloon debate and would like to invite you to a chat about mooting sometime soon after reading week. If you're interested in this, would you mind letting me know a time and day you'll be free that the four of us, you and us three, can meet to discuss it? As to the feed back it has to be said that you did very well. • Firstly the fact that you didn't have a script or notes to prompt you, and that you remembered your facts was very impressive though maybe just a single side or two of notes would be worth using for those just in case scenarios. • You showed very good research and made some very good points. • We found that you had, on the whole, very good eye contact, which helped keep us engaged. • If I, personally, had to find fault, it was that, at times, you could be slightly monotonous, particularly on the very factual points. The important thing about talking about facts is to be certain to keep the judges engaged on them, and to keep the focus upon you. • There was the occasional however, as with almost all participants, I'm more than certain it was nerves causing it. As I said earlier, you did exceptionally well, and though not released, you and another competitor were joint runners up, which is why we've asked you to talk to us at a convenient time for you. I hope that this is of use to you, and any questions feel free to get in contact with myself, Ellie or Susan, who have both been copied into this email. Regards, Matt Hi Kirandeep, Well done! We were really impressed by the skills you displayed and would very much urge you to take part in the moots, because you clearly have a strong foundation (on which we can build on). We will give you more feedback in person. As for my free slots (to be confirmed by the other 2 judges), are monday 11-12 and 14-15; Tuesday after 10 and, Friday all day. Regards Susan

  • 7. Internal Moot • I am now preparing material for the Internal Moot. I will also be attending an meeting to discuss further my feedback on the balloon debate I took part in and how this will help me further prepare for the Internal Moot. The attachment shows the question I will be dealing with and demonstrating an argument on the point of law I am particularly interested in arguing is 'in directing them that an act constituting attempted murder has been committed'.
  • 8. West law basic and advanced training completed successfully • Certificate is under the All Evidence Material for Skills Attached. • I have completed both the basic and advance West Law training and am pleased that I have achieved two certificates on the completing of my training. this will show to both future and present employers and institutions I have the skills for legal research. I will be receiving my certificates in less than 6weeks this will go along with my other achievement and will also be added to my CV skills.
  • 9. Personal tutor meeting • I have had my personal tutor meeting and I have identified areas of improvement and understand how the course will be assessed regarding mooting.
  • 10. I attended London web legal seminars • I went to the two day seminars in London. I understood the skills that will be required to complete the tasks in the internship.
  • 11. I completed lexis basic training and passed • I'm looking forward to completing the advance training. Certificate is under the All Evidence Material for Skills Attached.
  • 12. I succeeded into second round of internal moot competition • The experience was valuable and I am now waiting for round 2 details.
  • 13. My second task from law firm in New York (virtual internship) • I have just had a Skype talk with Elliot form web legal education.
  • 14. I taken part in second round internal moot and waiting for the results • The feedback I received was valuable to my experience and start of my career path on law. I will be waiting to hear the results if have succeeded to round 3 or if I will be given the opportunity to take mentor classes to expand on my legal advocacy skills required for a successful moot.
  • 15. I received feedback about the internal moot competition • Overall I did well and I was told techniques to improve my mooting skills. I will take this advice on board and understand for future competitions and ensure to reflect my feedback advice. Unfortunately it was for these reasons I didn't go through to round 3 semi finals, however the experience has ensured I will improve on my techniques of putting forward my moots.
  • 16. I have booked my personal tutor meeting • I have variety of questions and reflection so far on my course to ask. these range from exam dates and course assessment grading criteria.
  • 17. My CV updated • I have now reflected more of my skills and activities on my CV.
  • 18. Second personal tutor meeting • This meeting highlighted and reflected what i need to do in order to prepare myself for the upcoming assessments. No issues were raised in terms of under progressing as I am on target from my first tutor meeting in October therefore and therefore I am sticking to the action plan to ensure I consistently progress towards the end of the first year studying law llb.
  • 19. I have signed up for mentor moot • This will enable me to practice my mooting skills and prep for the summative criminal and skills moot. I feel this is vital for preparation as this style of feedback is vital from mentors as it is hard to receive feedback when assessing your own self. therefore feedback from the mentor will highlight what I need to improve on and particularly if my advocacy skills are correctly carried out during the moot.
  • 20. I taken part in the mentor moot and received feedback • In order to prepare myself for the mentor moot, I have taken part in signing up for the mentor moot classes as this will ensured I receive feedback on what I need to work on for the final summative moots and ensure that I understand my strengths thus making me confident. the feedback I received was overall good for level 4 standard moots and that although I did perform the advocacy skills required I should avoid hand movements due to nerves. therefore I was advise to hold my folder on my left arm this will then help me avoid the hand movements otherwise it will distract attention from my submissions as they are the important part of the assessments that will be assessed.
  • 21. I updated my CV with suggestions from my personal tutor • I sent an email to my personal tutor to check how my CV is looking as I taken on he feedback in my second personal tutor meeting to make certain amendments. This is so I can hand out my CV to the law firms which will be at the law fair at BCU.
  • 22. I sent my letter writing task to the New York law firm (virtual internship) • Overall this task had involved using skills of analysis and research. this was a different but similar to normal research tasks required on the law llb level 4 programme this is because although the principles of apply the law to the facts was same as i used in my assessments at BCU, the law I was dealing with was American legal system. Therefore it taken me a while to understand what the factual situation was concerning and how I would apply the American legal system and principles to the situation. I have attached the completed assessment of the letter writing task and will now be waiting for feedback and my final grade.
  • 23. I went to the law fair at BCU • I been given my CV's out to the law fairs and discussed various questions I had regarding the law firms speciality in more detail therefore i can have a better understanding if would fit in the law firms. This event also highlighted the fierce competition of securing a work placement and vacation schemes therefore I will ensure that I start looking at deadline dates for these applications and ensure I spend more time on applications and skills that would stand me out in comparison to other applicants.
  • 24. I attended one of Lexis workshops regarding how to improve your grade in exams• This workshop with Emma Noble was definitely useful I realise how important it is to evaluate the law under discussion in the question and not just simply state and apply the law. She showed me range of ways to use secondary sources form journal articles, Hulsbury sources, and PSL - she also gave me useful advice not just for this years exams but also tips with my application when I will be applying for work placements this year and in my second year. I have definitely more confidence in now beginning my exam preparation as I understand I will need to start from textbooks (and not just stick to one but view others) then move on to lexis to use relevant case summaries to understand legal theories how to apply them in the exam and then reference journal articles to evaluate the grey areas in the law under discussion.
  • 25. My Virtual Internship Grade • I received an overall Grade B for the internship tasks set and coursework I'm pleased with my feedback and understand in order to receive an higher grade of A I should have shown more precision and evaluation. This will go on my CV and has added to my skills which I will demonstrate to future employers.
  • 26. Elected Second Year Representative of Mooting Society • I have been informed I will be the second year representative for the mooting society in my second year of the law llb degree. This has definitely made me confident as I completed a manifesto explaining why I should be a second year representative for the mooting society therefore I feel happy to be elected which has built my confidence of demonstrating the skills I have. I will ensure in my second year of studying the law degree that I attend all mooting society meetings, keep on top of all information and key events that need to be notified to other second year law students and ensure I perform my duties well as a second year representative for the mooting society.
  • 27. My CV for employers • I have uploaded my CV under the All Evidence Material for Skills.
  • 28. My Cover Letter for employers • I have uploaded my cover letter under the All Evidence Material for Skills.
  • 29. Skills Audit Exercise • I have uploaded my Skills Audit Exercise under the All Evidence Material for Skills Attached is the Skills audit I have completed in order to prepare myself to review my strength and weaknesses. Its important to understand what skills that will help me stand out from other candidates when listing these skills and experience on my CV and Covering letter (as well as interviews). I realise the skills that will make me attract a niche market of employers is language skills as I know 4 languages (including English) therefore I can communicate with the South Asian community.
