STRATEGICREWARDSYSTEM: AN
INTERVENTIONTO DECREASEPERCENTAGE
OF LEARNERS’ABSENTEEISM
IN BAYUGAN NATIONALCOMPREHENSIVE
HIGHSCHOOL
S.Y. 2019-2020

JANE A. LEYBAG
Rationale:
• School absenteeism is an alarming problem for administrators,
teachers, parents, society in general, and students in
particular. Unaccepted absences have a negative effect on
peer relationships, which can cause further absence(Loren
Murcia, 2015).
• Education is essential to everyone. Students of today are lucky
enough because the government had provided schools that
are accessible. Sad to note, that even how near the distance of
school from students’ home, perfect attendance in Bayugan
National Comprehensive High School is hard to attain.
•
• Students’ attendance in the previous month, September 2019,
is alarming. Based on the form 2 given by the section advisers
the percentage of absenteeism is very high.
• It’s for this reason that the researchers embarked on
developing strategic intervention that will decrease the
percentage of absenteeism of the students and motivate them
to go to school regularly.
Generation of Alternative
Solution
• Reward System is one of the most effective strategies in
motivating students in attending their classes. The purpose of
using of this strategy is to minimize the absenteeism of the
students.
• This Reward System will help improve the percentage of daily
attendance of the students and may also increase their
motivation in going to school regularly.
• To solve the existing problem regarding the absenteeism, the
researchers will create a strategic reward system. Certificate
and free snacks will be given for the class or section with a
very less percentage of absenteeism of the week.
Activities undertaken
• After studying the result of the absenteeism of the student
inside the classroom within the month of September 2019,
there was a high percentage of absenteeism. The Grade 9
Sapphire has a percentage of 34.62%,20% for Graphite and
Amethyst has a percentage of absences of 14.81%.
• With the desire of the researchers to decrease the percentage
of students’ absences, the strategic intervention will be used
by giving a reward to the whole section that has a less
percentage of absenteeism.
• The said reward will be giving snacks and a certificate to that
section that has less percentages of absenteeism. The
researchers believed that the reward system will help
motivate the students in coming to school regularly.
Objectives
• This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of strategic
reward system that will help decrease the percentage of
absenteeism in Bayugan National Comprehensive High School.
• Specifically, it is attempted to answer the following questions:
1.What is the percentage of absenteeism in a previous month?
2. What is the percentage of absenteeism after conducting the
reward system technique?
3.Is there a significant difference between the percentage of
absenteeism in a previous month and after conducting the reward
system?
Research Design
• The classroom-based action research will be employed to
carry out this study.
• The aims of the researchers were to record, analyse and
interpret the problem in absenteeism of the students. This
design will accommodate generalization of findings of the
study upon the target population.
• The attendance of learners will be checked daily by their
advisers to monitor the progress of the said intervention.
• After a week, the researchers will consolidate the attendance
of the three sections and will identify the Best in Attendance
Section to receive the reward.
Methodolgy
• This chapter will discuss the results of the study on the
analysis of students attendance based on the strategic reward
system with the use of Mean Percentage Scores (No. of
absences).
• Statistically, the problems of the study will be answered by the
following data that will be gathered by the researchers.
• 1. . Percentage of students’ absences before conducting the
strategic reward system
• 2. Percentage of students’ attendance after conducting the
strategic reward system
• 3. Difference of percentage before and after the intervention.
Time Frame
• This research will be conducted on November 11-22, 2019.
From 7:30 am to 3:00 pm, Monday to Friday.
• The target respondents of this study will be from the three
sections from Grade 9- Amethyst, Sapphire and Graphite of
Bayugan National Comprehensive High School.
• The respondents will be covered with 197 learners enrolled
during the School Year 2019-2020.
