Accommodating Various Cultures in the Classroom
1. Students will participate in collaborating with their peer about their chosen holiday
tradition outside of their culture realm. Students are required to have an understanding of
their topic and reflect it in their overall performance.
Common ground of learner/content
There are 20 4th
graderstotal,11 girlsand 9 boys.Two are Muslim, 3 are Jewish,and2are
AfricanAmerican.Iwill interview themasa classexploringtheirknowledge of holidays,not
onlywithinAmericanCulture butalsofromthe culturesof theirpeers.Iwill observethemduringclass
discussion,alongwithincorporatingvariousactivitiestoaccommodate eachlearningstyle andgenre of
information.
Objective
Studentswill identifyholidaytraditionsof notonlytheirownculture,butothersaswell,such
as: Christmas,Easter, Halloween,Valentine’sDay, Kwanza,Hanukkah, Ramadan,Muharram,
and Passover.They will alsobe knowledgeableof traditionsothercontinentscarryoutwhile
celebratingotherholidays,all beingapprovedbyme first.We will brieflycoverthe traditionsinclass
usingan informationaldocumentarywithacomprehension/notetakingsheet.Iwill alsopresentpictures
of traditionsandquestionthe students’basicknowledge of the holidays,whilebrieflyelaboratingon
each one. Students willthencomplete the assignment givenwithanassignedpartnerbypresenting
gatheredinformationof theirholidayof choice thatliesoutside the realmof theirownculture.Theywill
presentthe informationbycreating2visual aidstoassistinexplainingtheirchosentraditiontothe class
at the endof a two weekperiod.Intheirpresentationtheyare requiredtothoroughlyexplainatleast
10 traditionsof theirchosenholiday,aswell ascomparingandcontrastingitwiththeirown.The
assessmentisbasedonthe contentof theirclassroompresentation, completionof
comprehension/notetakingtemplate, alongwiththe utilizedmaterials.
