Acceleration
I. Changing an object’s motion Your trip to school each morning requires that you change motion. You do not travel in a straight line at a constant speed There are three ways to change an object’s motion Change speed Change direction Or both What parts of a car can change an object’s motion??
II. Changing velocity The rate at which the velocity is changing is called acceleration . Acceleration is basically how much you speed up or slow down in a given amount of time Acceleration is measured in m/s 2 Acceleration is not just for speeding up, but also for slowing down. This is often called deceleration or negative acceleration
III. Velocity-time graph Acceleration can be found from a v-t graph just like we found velocity from a d-t graph. By finding the slope of the line you can find the acceleration, or change in speed, of an object. If the v-t graph has a straight line, then the acceleration is constant. If the v-t graph has a curved line, then the acceleration is not constant.
IV. D-t AND v-t graphs See examples on the board.
