The Heart Of The Lungs
The Lungs are a part of every living human and animal that exist today. The lungs are classified as one
of the hardest working organs in the body, besides the heart. They can expand and contract up to 20
times a minute or more to provide oxygen to be distributed to tissues in all parts of the body. They are
considered to be the largest organ in the body. Taking up over forty percent of the chest cavity. Due to
the size, we can only have two. The heart takes up the other space in the upper cavity. Each lung is
made up of a sponge like material of tissue. They have been divided up into sections called lobes. The
right lung has three lobes and the left lung only has two. These are called the superior, middle, and
inferior. The average size of the lungs is 11 in. in length. Most normal adult human s lungs are about
the same size. The normal lungs have an average weight of 234 grams or so. The weight depends a lot
on the health of the lung. The average pair of human lungs can hold about 5 liters of air.
Approximately, a healthy human can breathe up to 24480 times in a day. The lungs are red color
because it is smooth muscles. It is made of all muscle tissue. The job of my organ is to take oxygen
from the air and carbon dioxide is exchange. It does its job with the millions tiny grape likes cells that
are called alveoli, which allows oxygen to seep into the capillaries or the thin wall that air sacs where
carbon dioxide exchange take place.

Bill Miller Essay
1. How well has Value Trust performed as of the date of the case?
As of 2005, Value Trust had outperformed its benchmark index, the S P 500, for 14 years
consecutively. Given that the next longest period of sustained performance was only half as long, 14
consecutive years of excellent performance set a record as the longest streak of success for any
manager in the mutual fund industry. The average annual total return for the past 15 years was 14.6%,
which was higher than the S P s 500 by 3.67%. Value Trust had 36 holdings, 10 of which accounted
for nearly 50% of the fund s assets. Morningstar gave Value Trust a five star rating.

Miller is an adherent of fundamental analysis, an approach to equity investing he had gleaned from a
number of sources. Miller s approach was research intensive and highly concentrated. Nearly 50% of
Value Trust s assets were invested in just 10 large capitalization companies. While most of Miller s
investments were value stocks, he was not averse to taking large positions in the stocks of growth
companies. Overall, Miller s style was eclectic and difficult to distill.
Several key elements of Miller s contrarian strategy included: 1) buy low price, high intrinsic value
stocks; 2) take heart in pessimistic markets; 3) remember that the lowest average cost wins; 4) be wary
of valuation illusions; 5) take the long view; 6) look for cyclical and secular underpricing; 7) buy low
expectation stocks; 8) take risks.
4. What is the efficient markets hypothesis? What does it imply about the role of portfolio managers?
The Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH) states that it is impossible to beat the market because stock
market efficiency causes existing share prices to always incorporate and reflect all relevant
information.
According to the EMH, stocks always trade at their fair value on stock exchanges, making it
impossible for investors to either purchase undervalued stocks or sell stocks for inflated prices. Thus,
portfolio managers should find it impossible to outperform the overall

A Brief Note On Transportation And Logistics Management
In the vast industry that is transportation and logistics management, has a lot of influence on the
economy of the United States. One of the reasons for the close connection of the industry and U.S
economy is because of globalization, and in the content of this paper we will examine different
segments of the industry, and how they affect the economy in different ways. Addressing specific
segments of the industry tells us just how important each segment is to the economy, instead of
speaking of the industry in general. Throughout this research paper we will be looking at five specific
transportation and logistics operation within the industry. The airline industry is very important to the
many cities within the United States, creating a number of jobs because of the ability that airports
have to connect cities to the rest of the world. Job created through the air transport systems that help
boost a cities economy is tourisms and airport jobs, which can help to transform a city. The cruise ship
industry also help boost cities, which operates port of call for the cruises that operate from them.
Cruises also generates many jobs in the tourism sector as people sometimes have to fly and overnight
from different cities to board these cruises. Another major factor that is affecting the industry is
globalization and how it is able to create jobs and help improve the economy. Other areas in the
transportation and logistics industry that has an affect on the economy is the overuse of

Individualism Vs Society, A Doll s House
Individualism vs Society, A Doll s House Struggle In the 19th century Victorian society, individuals
were expected to follow strict generalized standards for what is considered, acceptable conduct. With
his play, A Doll s House , Ibsen captures conflicts, especially for women, to abide by the standards
placed by society. While Nora the main character at first seems to fulfil her role as the perfect mother
and wife, she is eventually divided between her obligations as a woman, and her need to express her
true self. On the other hand, Nora s husband Torvald, strictly abides by what society has deemed
honorable and is only worried about the outside perception of himself. This relentless need to maintain
a façade impedes him to accept Nora s rebellious actions; and fears that her actions will turn their
family into outcasts of society. Ibsen portrays, through several characters in the play A Doll s House ,
the struggle of individuals to express their original true self in a repressive Victorian society, while at
the same time fulfill their societal expectations. Throughout the play, Nora experiences a
metamorphosis that will change her perceptions of a fulfilled life. At first, Nora seems to be the
perfect wife and mother of the Victorian society. She is eager to please her oppressive husband in
every way that he wants and dutifully cares for her children. However, Rahman points out that It s a
pretention of happiness and fulfillment, whereas her identity her true self

Illusion in Madame Butterfly Essay
Illusion in M. Butterfly In David Henry Hwang s play M. Butterfly we are introduced to Rene
Gallimard who has unknowingly been sexually involved with another man for twenty years. The idea
of mistaken gender within the play causes the reader to question how could one mistake his/her lover s
gender for so long? In Rene Gallimard s search for self identity he ignorantly chooses illusion over
reality. Hwang effectively uses the opera Madame Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini as a framework to
mold the main character, Rene Gallimard. Gallimard longs to be like the hero in Madame Butterfly,
Benjamin Franklin Pinkerton, who dominates and possesses a beautiful Asian woman. Within the
drama Gallimard concedes that he is not very attractive and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

As the drama progresses so does Gallimard and Song s relationship. Upon becoming intimate Song
exclaims, No...let me...keep my clothes. [. . .] Turn off the lights (761). Song s repeated modesty
should invoke curiosity within Gallimard but he chooses to overlook her strange requests. As the
readers, we too could find nothing wrong with her modesty at this point, but during the trial, revealing
facts are exposed. Song replies to the judge I suppose he might have wondered why I was always on
my stomach (780). Now that we have the details of their sexual relationship, it is quite clear that
Gallimard chooses illusion over reality in order to maintain his new identity. Gallimard becomes as
sick as his idol Pinkerton when talks about Song s reaction to his affair It was her tears and her silence
that excited me, every time I visited Renee (769). Another example of Gallimard s choice of illusion is
his belief that Song bore his child. Song claims she is pregnant and then runs away only to come back
several months later with a child. Gallimard never sees her pregnant yet he still chooses to turn his
back on reality and looks to illusion. In the end Gallimard confesses to his choice of illusion and
wishes to remain there because the reality is to ugly to face. When Song reveals her true gender
Gallimard confesses I knew all the time somewhere that my happiness was temporary, my love a
deception. But my mind kept the knowledge at bay (783). In

Essay about The Matrix
lt;a href= quot;http://www.geocities.com/vaksam/ quot; gt;Sam Vaknin s Psychology, Philosophy,

It is easy to confuse the concepts of quot;virtual reality quot; and a quot;computerized model of reality
(simulation) quot;. The former is a self contained Universe, replete with its quot;laws of physics quot;
and quot;logic quot;. It can bear resemblance to the real world or not. It can be consistent or not. It can
interact with the real world or not. In short, it is an arbitrary environment. In contrast, a model of
reality must have a direct and strong relationship to the world. It must obey the rules of physics and of
logic. The absence of such a relationship renders it meaningless. A flight ... Show more content on

A group of human miscreants succeeds to learn the secret of the Matrix. They form an underground
and live aboard a ship, loosely communicating with a halcyon city called quot;Zion quot;, the last
bastion of resistance. In one of the scenes, Cypher, one of the rebels defects. Over a glass of (illusory)
rubicund wine and (spectral) juicy steak, he poses the main dilemma of the movie. Is it better to live
happily in a perfectly detailed delusion or to survive unhappily but free of its hold?
The Matrix controls the minds of all the humans in the world. It is a bridge between them, they inter
connected through it. It makes them share the same sights, smells and textures. They remember. They
compete. They make decisions. The Matrix is sufficiently complex to allow for this apparent lack of
determinism and ubiquity of free will. The root question is: is there any difference between making
decisions and feeling certain of making them (not having made them)? If one is unaware of the
existence of the Matrix, the answer is no. From the inside, as a part of the Matrix, making decisions
and appearing to be making them are identical states. Only an outside observer one who in possession
of full information regarding both the Matrix and the humans can tell the difference.
Moreover, if the Matrix were a computer program of infinite complexity, no observer (finite or
infinite) would have been able to say with any certainty whose

The s Quest For Meaning
Two mice, nibbling and gnawing, representing the inexorable entity, time, which exists as a constant
threat to humanity; a dark pit with death as the only certainty; a ferocious beast forbidding escape; a
single branch offering delay; a drop of honey attempting to conceal inevitable peril. The powerful
metaphor embedded in this Buddhist parable serves as the platform for Leo Tolstoy (A Confession) in
his quest for meaning. It offers a simplistic illustration of the common predicament faced by all of
mankind, to which Tolstoy and fellow thinkers, Sigmund Freud (Civilization and Its Discontents) and
C.S. Lewis (The Abolition of Man) attempt to provide a solution. Each thinker offers a unique
conclusion based upon their respective definitions of the problem and its perpetuating influences. The
thinkers focus their investigation on the authority of science, instinct, and faith. Tolstoy is distinct in
his ability to rationalize toward a purpose independent of mankind itself; he alters the circumstances
of life rather than man s capability to deal with such circumstances. Freud and Lewis confine their
respective reasonings to the continuation and progression of mankind so as to better cope with the
predicament of man. Their theories on the improvement of man and civilization serve only to extend
the torment of mankind.
Tolstoy does not hesitate to dismiss the significance of science as an answer to the predicament of
man. He quotes Solomon explaining that in much wisdom is much

Essay on Qualitative and Quantitative Research
Qualitative and Quantitative study designs both can be beneficial in research design. They both
provide valuable options for researchers in the field. These techniques can either be used separately in
a research study or they can be combined to achieve maximum information. This paper will define the
terms qualitative and quantitative; describe the similarities and differences between each; discuss how
qualitative and/or quantitative research designs or techniques could be used in the evaluation of my
proposed research; and discuss why linking analysis to study design is important. Quantitative studies
are primarily numbers based. They deal with large cohort groups as well as analyze large amounts of
data. A quantitative ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When both research designs are used together, more information can be gathered. Mixed methodology
uses the numerical portion of the quantitative study design in combination with the descriptive aspect
of the qualitative study. There are many similarities between these two designs, which make them
compatible with each other. Whilst quantitative research may be mostly used for testing theory it can
also be used for exploring an area and generating hypotheses and theory. Similarly qualitative research
can be used for testing hypotheses and theories even though it is mostly used for theory generation
(Hughes, 2006). Both of these designs may be similar with testing theory, they are also similar in the
tools that they use and how the data is analyzed. Qualitative data often includes quantification (eg
statements such as more than, less than, most as well as specific numbers). Quantitative (ie
questionnaire) approaches can collect qualitative data through open ended questions (Hughes, 2006).
These similarities are what make these two study designs compatible for each other. There are also
some differences between these study designs, which may cause some problems for the inexperienced
researcher. Quantitative research is objective; qualitative research is subjective. Quantitative research
seeks explanatory laws; qualitative research aims at

Essay on Women in Ministry
Women have been involved in Christian ministry since the very beginning of Christianity. It has
declined and risen according to the acceptance of the environment. The two papers addressed in this
essay document the rise of women ministers in the Holiness movement as well as the decline of
women in the modern Pentecostal movement. In response to this decline in women in ministry,
Courtney Stewart gave points which the UPCI should tackle to rectify the situation. In Holy Boldness
Women Preachers Autobiographies and the Sanctified Self, the history of women in ministry is
addressed. The excerpt given starts by discussing the pioneers of women ministers Wesleyan/Holiness
groups. It was in the Holiness movement in the late 19th ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The second paper, written by David Norris, focuses mainly on the history of Pentecostal women in
ministry. He gave a brief mention to the emergence of Holiness women preachers, and then fast
forwards to the Pentecostal movement. Because many of the people involved in the Pentecostal
movement had once been a part of the Holiness movement, women were generally accepted as
ministers. However, even here women were relegated to the margins. They took the broken, burnt out,
run down churches that no one else wanted. Many times these women would revitalized a run down
church only to step down, or be shunted aside, so a man could take over as pastor. According to
Norris, at the founding of the UPCI nearly 22% of the licensed ministers were women. This number
has steadily declined over the past 50 years until only 3% of the licensed ministers are women. Norris
gives four possible reasons for this: 1. Because women did not learn how to theologically defend their
position at the beginning of the movement, they do not know how now that the climate has changed to
where they must defend their calling. 2. There were many more denominations involved in the
Pentecostal movement than just the Holiness groups who were not willing to license women. 3. There
are little or no role models who promote women in

Challenges And Advantages And Disadvantages Of Matrix...
There are many types of structures that an organization might have, each of them comes with its own
set of advantages and disadvantages. Let us look at the benefits and drawbacks of three (or rather,
five) of the more modern structures. Matrix organizations One of the biggest challenges for employees
in a matrix organization is the fact that they have to report to multiple managers. With employees
directly reporting to two or more supervisors, these supervisors need to be highly coordinated with
one another to make sure that they re giving consistent orders. Otherwise, employees may be given
orders from different managers that are very difficult to follow in unison. Even worse, orders from
different managers can outright conflict. Employees can t follow these orders because they re mutually
exclusive. This causes ambiguity and confusion as to what the employee should do. This problem can
be avoided with high levels of communication and coordination between department managers and
project managers though. If these managers can stay on the same page, they can have a much clearer
picture of where to lead employees and they can put up a unified front. In that way, instructions from
either manager that a given employee reports to can give orders consistent with the orders given by the
other manager, and the employee will be able to follow the lead of both managers simultaneously.
There are clearly challenges in leading a matrix organization, as well as challenges in working

Barnes Foundation Controversy
Alfred Barnes, who had a passion for collecting famous artworks for educating and developing
character within individuals, founded The Barnes Foundation in 1922. He housed his collection in his
estate, which was located in the suburbs of Merion, Pennsylvania. Barnes believed that the everyday
man should have the opportunity to visit and appreciate honored artworks as well as to improve from
the estate s educational courses. Education is the priority; in fact, Barnes believed that the foundation
should not be considered an art museum. As stated by Barnes, the purpose of the foundation was, to be
maintained perpetually for education in the appreciation of the fine arts and as an educational
experiment. The controversy arises decades after Barnes death. Barnes passed away in 1951 and
contained in his will, he specifically stated that in the Barnes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Glanton started to increase admission prices, added a gift shop, and took other commercialized steps
to create a more standard art museum. All of these measures went against Alfred Barnes s original
intent for the educational facility, where he specifically stated the collection should not be used for
commercial display. Glanton argues that the purpose was to raise money for the renovation and care
for the building and collection. Add why his argument is discredited. Another ethical breach Glanton
spearheaded in, was the decision to move the entire Barnes collection to downtown Philadelphia,
rather than following Barnes s instruction to preserve the artworks perpetually in his estate. Again,
Glanton argues that the decision was to create more revenue for the artworks themselves; however
Alfred Barnes s legacy was disrespected beyond belief as there were other ways to fund the collection
while still staying true to Barnes s endowment. It is clear that Glanton went against Barnes s original

Battle Tactics During World War I
World War 1 was a time of great bloodshed, and no battle demonstrated this fact more than the battle
of Verdun (Feb 21, 1916 Dec 18, 1916). The near half a million casualties suffered during the battle of
Verdun displayed the futility and uselessness of past battle tactics. France for the most part did not
change its tactic, but along with the British began development of the tank. The tank was a terrifying
tool for warfare, but Germany had a different solution to the problem. Through study of battle tactics
used during the Russian Brusilov offensive (Jun 4, 1916 Sep 20, 1916) and the Italian Arditi (The
daring ones) they developed the Sturmtruppen. The Sturmtruppen where the German elite, and as such

The Italian Arditi would advance very closely behind an artillery bombardment on the enemy line and
as soon as the bombardment stopped they would start throwing grenades. This was done to trick the
enemy into thinking the bombardment was still going on. Then they would jump into the trenches and
start killing the enemy with knives as grenades were still being thrown. O la vittoria, o tutti accopiati
(Either we win or we all die) was the motto of the Arditi, and this phrase rang true for the Arditi. The
strategy was effective until the enemy realized what was going on, at that moment the Arditi lost their
advantage, and on many occasions most if not all troops were killed. This is were the Sturmtruppen
stepped in and refined the tactic. With German Stormtroops the beginning would be similar to the
Arditi, moving up under artillery cover. Though with the Germans their objective was not to hold the
trench, but instead to push behind and take the flank allowing an easy victory. Unlike the Arditi, the
Sturmtruppen had support. Most troops were still rifle men, but with support from heavy gunners with
MG08/15 s and massive amounts of grenades they were able to push through the enemy defense, mop

The Treatment Of Physician Assisted Suicide
Just imagine...the invitation arriving in the mail, it was no ordinary invite. The days of physical misery
and suffering that lead up to this final celebration of life were unbearable to watch. Having a
terminally ill family member is hard because you know the days, weeks and months are numbered.
Quality of life, what is that anyway? Each passing hour has the quality of life diminishing to
unimaginable physical pain and anguish. Watching someone you love slip away and turn into a shell
of who they once were is unbearable. This invitation is special. This special day and every precious
hour will give the loved ones a time to say goodbye just before they die with dignity in physician
assisted suicide. Terminally ill patients have the right to end their own lives using physician assisted
suicide (PAS) without repercussions of laws and people with opposing opinions.
According to an article from CNN.com, there are currently five states in the U.S. where physician
assisted suicide is currently legal. In order to be eligible legally for PAS the patient must have six
months or less to live. In the states of Oregon, California, Vermont, Washington and Montana a
physician can prescribe medications to move along the death without being prosecuted for murder.
It is hard to know the correct statistics on just how many physician assisted suicides happen across the
U.S. Since it is illegal in the majority of the states it is not something that is reported because those

Suspension bridges are able to work efficiently because of their cables, which are interesting from a
mathematical perspective.
Since the bridge s deck spans a long distance, it must be very heavy in weight by its own, not to
mention all the weight of the heavy load of traffic that it must carry. Because of all this weight, this
results in two active forces: compression and tension. The cable s parabolic shape results in order for it
to effectively address these forces acting upon the bridge. For instance, the deck sags from all the
weight of the traffic because of compression forces, which travels upwards the cables. The cables then
transfer those compression forces downwards the vertical towers, down into the foundations buried
deep within the earth. However, the cables receive the brunt of the tension forces, as they are
supporting the bridge s weight and its load of traffic, being stretched by the anchors ends

Renewable Energy Sources Of Energy
The worldwide demand of energy has been increasing considerably. Up to 2030, it is supposed to be
60% higher than today (B. SCHMITZ, 2013). Currently, non renewable energy sources, like coal and
oil, are more commonly used, since they are cheaper than renewable energies. In the European Union,
80% of the energy consumption demands are covered by fossil sources (B. SCHMITZ, 2013). But,
non renewable energy sources are running out and they are also very harmful for the environment,
since they generate greenhouse gases. So, it is very important to discover more renewable ways to
generate energy.
For a very long time, the only energy source that mankind had was the human muscle. After that they
discovered the fire and the animal domestication providing them a source of heat and help from horses
to plough their fields. The only other accessible sources of energy that they could explore were wind
and water. Sails were used on ships allowing people to move across water, windmills and water
wheels were used to grind grains and pump water. At the end the 18th century Europeans discovered
the power of non renewable energy sources and started to use fossil fuels, first coal then oil and
natural gas. With these new energy sources, a lot of new technologies were invented over the years
until in 1700 and 1800 when the industrial revolution occurred. These new technologies based in
fossil fuels allowed an exponential increase in the population and living standards. But, this increase

Women Are The Ones Who Handle Household Chores
Always women are the ones who handle the household chores
Household chores like doing the laundry, cleaning the utensils, taking care of children and making
food is always done by women. If both, husband and wife are working, it is always the woman doing
the domestic work. But this is not always true. This is in fact a gender stereotype which has existed
since many years. Maybe not all men or fathers do household chores, but many do. According to
Catherine Rampell, a writer for The New York Times newspaper, on an average day, 66.6% men and
85% women report doing some sort of household activity.
Almost everybody believe in this stereotype. Even if a man is sharing household work with his spouse
or any other female in the house, his image is presented as if he does nothing. Even if he is
contributing little, he is at least doing something, and something is definitely better than nothing. No
man s conscious would allow him to see his wife or any female in the house do all the work in the
house alone. Even if a man is going out for groceries, it is not considered a household work by the
female, just because he did not contribute to do the work in the house. Women tend to see the results
instead of the work done to get those particular results. If men are doing the dishes, it is considered
nothing because they are just rinsing them and putting them in the dish washer, which is an easy job.
But it takes time to do it. Men are using up their time, in which they relax, to do the

Edward Scissorhands Character Analysis
Individuality can be an admired gift, but it is often buried under society s illogically perfect
expectations. The famous film director, Tim Burton, known for directing movies such as Edward
Scissorhands and Alice in Wonderland, proves in several thrilling adventures. He shows that
uniqueness is a strength, not a weakness, even if it means being an outcast or misfit. Through two of
his films, Miss Peregrine s Home for Peculiar Children and Edward Scissorhands, showcases the
message of identity is preferable to conformity.
An outcast is a perfect example of identity. Even if they try, they never truly fit in. Sometimes it can
be because of an awkward nature or because they are given the title goodie two shoes . But these

Edward s actions speak very loudly, louder than his odd hands, dark clothing, or strange/awkward
behaviors. The show of loyalty proves Burton s message of identity. This message is also showcased
in the movie Miss Peregrine s Home for Peculiar Children. Basically, all of the Peculiars are the
outcasts of the film. When Jake first enters the loop and meets Miss Peregrine, she says a quote that
beautifully supports the message. As Miss Peregrine explains to Jake what Peculiars are, she says, We
are what s known in common towns as peculiar. Because our abilities don t fit in the outside world, we
live in places like this where no one can find us. Miss Peregrine. This quote helps to show the
audience that the misfits couldn t fit in, but as the movie continues, the peculiars prove themselves as
brave, merciful people with strong characters. In contrast, the times we do get to see the townspeople,
they seem to be reckless, moody, unstable people. The words both sets of characters say shows just
how different they are and just how much of a good thing being an outcast can be.
The contrasting settings between the two main different places also helps to accent the difference
between individuality and conformity. Typically, in each of Burton s films, there is a dark, eerie
setting, and a bright, vivid setting. The example of vivid versus eerie settings

A Stamp Of Disapproval By David Saxon
A Stamp of Disapproval Written By: David Saxon No taxation without representation is being chanted
through the colonies as of late, the Parliament of Great Britain has fed more fuel to the fire of the
colonists, The Stamp acts have been introduced and many colonists do not agree. Now that the Seven
Years War is over the Royal Crown is in debt. After the war Prime Minister, John Stuart, 3rd Earl of
Bute, decided to keep 10,000 British Soldiers in the colonies which would cost £225,000 a year. One
of the reasons of why the Prime Minister would do this is that demobilizing the troops would put

Written by: David Saxon More death, murder, and violence have hit the streets of the colonies. British
soldiers shot and killed a mob attacking them. This has only caused more unrest in the colonies and
the tension between the American Colonist and the British is at an all time high. Boston has been the

were met with immediate protests stating that it was against the colonist constitutional rights. This led
the Massachusetts House of Representatives to fight the Townshend Acts. They sent a petition to King
George III asking to remove the acts. They also sent a letter to other colonial representative
assemblies, asking them to help them and join the protests, and called for a boycott of imported goods.

Non Meat Eating Lifestyle Can Be Difficult Essay
There has always been a negative remark towards people that choose not to eat meat. I have been a
pescartrain, a person that abstains from eating any meat except fish, for three years and most of the
time people tend to either assume that I want to lose weight or try to convince me that it is an
unhealthy lifestyle. They always say, you aren t getting enough protein , or one of my personal
favorites, so, you only eat salad? . As absurd as it sounds, I get asked this multiple times either from
people I just met and even my family. People often stereotype vegetarians as skinny and extremely fit;
however that is not the case. Adapting to non meat eating lifestyle can be difficult; however there are
many benefits. Even though many people assume vegetarians do not get enough protein, becoming a
vegetarian can decrease the chances of certain cancers and heart diseases.
The idea of abstaining from meat has been around for a long period of time. According to Claus
Leitzmann from the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition it has been around since the sixth century
B.C. and originated from the Orphic mysteries followers. A greek philosopher by the name of
Pythagorean, and other influential persons promoted ethical vegetarianism until the 19th century. After
that it begin to fade away until it was reintroduced during the Renaissance Era and the Age of
Enlightenment. When people were informed of the benefits of becoming a vegetarian or vegan, a

of passion. The movie exemplifies a Shakespearean tragedy described by the tragic hero s destiny of
free will which ultimately leads to his eventual downfall and his internal struggles and death. This is

The Strategy Of Mergers And Acquisition
2.1 Strategy of Mergers Acquisition Mergers Acquisitions refers to corporate reorganisations that
transfer an organisation s ownership from one firm, the target, to the other known as the acquirer
(Motis, 2007). The difference between a merger and an acquisition is that the former is a combination
of two companies, whereas acquisition is when one company completely takeover another (Gupta,

economies of scale that can arise from the deal (Pettinger, 2012). For example, the firm benefits from

HYPOTHESIS
The trend will mimic the pattern of the half life of a radioactive material, with the same approximate
curve, because the M Ms with m showing will be approximately half of the total M Ms at every half
life, which is the same as decaying radioisotopes, with half the atoms disappearing every half life.
MATERIALS
A packet of M Ms
A clean sheet of paper (A4)
A clean jar/cupcake cup
PROCEDURE
1. Copy the table from the criteria sheet into your workbook
2. Count the total number of M Ms in the container

Fixed and Variable Costs
Health services managers are essentially interested in how costs are affected by changes in volume.
Cost behavior refers to a cost s reactions to activity level. A cost may rise, fall, or remain constant as
activity levels fluctuate. We can classify several types of costs on the basis of their relationship to the
amount of services provided, often referred to as activity, utilization, or volume (Gapenski, 2012).
When dealing with the future there is a level of uncertainty of volume with regard to inpatient days,
number of emergency visits, number of unforeseen complications, number of additional unaccounted
for testing procedures and so on. The many costs incurred by the healthcare organization can be
classified as variable, fixed, or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Variable costs apply at a per unit basis, only the behavior of the variable per unit cost is different. For
example, if supplies for a one lab test cost $10, the variable cost per test remains constant. Although
the cost of the test remains the same, the total costs associated with the test will increase or decrease in
relation with the volume of tests at the hospital. Cost behavior refers to the relationship between a
given cost item and the quantity of it s related cost driver. It explains how the total amount for various
costs respond to changes in volume. When volume is zero, variable costs equal zero. If there are no
lab tests being performed, there are no variable costs incurred. Fixed costs on the other hand do not
change in response to a change in volume. The monthly cost to rent a clinic would stay constant
whether they had 50 or 100 lab tests, because that is a fixed cost.
Cost Allocation Cost allocation is essentially a pricing process within the organization whereby
managers allocate the costs of one department to other departments. Typically, the overhead costs of
the healthcare business, such as those incurred by administrators, facilities management personnel,
financial staff, housekeeping and maintenance personnel, must be allocated to those departments that
generate revenues for the organization. Departments that generate revenues are generally patient
services (Gapenski,

Problems and Challenges Faced by Multinational...

A multinational corporation (MNC) is a corporation that operating in two or more countries, known as
host countries but managed from one country, known as home country. Multinational Corporation is
also known as international corporation (Wikipedia, 2011). Besides that, MNC can be defined as a
corporation that derives revenues from operations in countries other than home country
(BusinessDictionary, 2011).
The objective of MNC to operate in other countries is to gain competitive advantage through several
ways. Firstly, MNC is able to take advantage of difference in country specific circumstances. For
example, MNC may choose to locate its productions in less developed country like Vietnam to gain
cheap labor cost. Secondly, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is a very good example which can reflect the situation perfectly is the case happened at
Argentina in 2001, where the country has changed the government for three times in just two weeks
time due to the financial crisis that lead to collapse of the economy. Then, foreign investors faced
problems like utilities and energy as there was a new legislation against them issued by the new
government (Alvaro Mehmet, 2007).
3) Government effectiveness
According to World Bank, government effectiveness is referring to captures perceptions of the quality
of public services, the quality of the civil service and the degree of its independence from political
pressures, the quality of policy formulation and implementation, and the credibility of the government
s commitment to such policies. This is important for foreign investors because they do not wish to pay
for the deficiencies in the provision of public goods by government.
Developing country MNCs may have more experience as they used to doing so at home where home
governments do not supply them goods. Therefore, MNCs may suffer for the ineffectiveness of the
government which can lead to unexpected cost and also size of the operations being limited in the
country. LDCs have lower government effectiveness which causes the government systems and
establishments are slow and politically dependant, thus lead to lack of high quality of public goods.
4) Regulatory quality

Although this might not be the worst case scenario,it still provides useful information in terms of
determining the vulnerability of North Vancouver facing an earthquake. The bright side of the
evaluation is that majority of people live in wood frame houses, which are inherently better able to
withstand earthquake damage and most are built on stable, solid ground. That would be especially
important if an earthquake struck at night, when most people are home. The dark side is that areas
likely to be most impacted by ground shaking and soil failure in an earthquake, especially buildings in
several low lying waterfront areas would likely be topple as sandy soils were subject to liquefaction

scenario that these areas would receive no significant structural damage when experienced a 7.3
magnitude earthquake. In general, North Vancouver is less dangerous under the condition

in the play can attribute the blame they receive to the antagonist, Abigail Williams. Three primary
examples of people that are scapegoats because of Abigail are, the Parris servant Tituba, the Proctor s

Theatre As A Form Of Theatre
Theatre and live performance can serve so many purposes and one of them is to globally entertain the
audience and to shape the society through the lessons learnt from a performance or play. Theatre exists
because we are mimetic and communal beings, we seek order, finally we enjoy and need
entertainment.
Theatre as a form of entertainment is extremely popular all over the world, and it has been designed to
hold audience s attention for a long time, it has been the primary form of public entertainment way
before the advent of radio and movies (Foreman). Live performances are known to get audience off
their seats due to excitement and it can also change one s mood from bad to good or vice versa.

This play has been revived many times since its premiere(Cruttwell).
The Role of the audience when it comes to theatric entertainment can be affected by the genre of the
play, space of the theatre, sitting arrangement and demographics. It is up to the audience to make a
performance better due to different reactions like echoing (being loud), laughter, standing ovation and
gasping.
Another great importance of theatre is the way it shapes the society. Firstly, theatre brings people
together as a community, Greek theatre is a good example of this, especially during the festival of
Dionysus, where the audience for plays would be over 1000 people. This gives the community
something to talk about therefore bringing people together. Theatre can also be of importance because
of the sense of identity it brings people, Theater, being such an ancient art, has become part of the
cultural heritage of many cultures. Peking Opera, Bunraku, Noh are all specific to a culture and form a
part of the identity of the people who belong to these cultures. Theatre being used as an instrument for
change is also important, nowadays, social media and video are probably a more effective tool to
effect change in society, but there is no media that can cause a bigger impact than theater. Watching a
live performance is much more likely to compel you to act for change. The work of theorists like
Bertolt Brecht and Augusto Boal is pretty much completely based on this idea.

The Dispute Between China And The Philippines Essay
The Dispute between China and the Philippines over the South China Sea The territorial and maritime
disputes over the South China Sea (SCS) have been ongoing for decades. The disputes have been
considered to be one the fiercest contested in Asia. The South China Sea is an enclosed sea surrounded
by several different states. China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Brunei, Taiwan, and Malaysia all
surrounded the South China Sea. The main cause of tension in this dispute is because China claims to
have historical sovereignty over all of the South China Sea. Associations of Southeast Asian Nations
(ASEAN) have come up with different discussions and suggestions on how to end the disputes with
favorable conditions for all contending states. They use the principles of the United Nation
Convention of the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and form the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in
the South China Sea (DOC). The states surrounding the South China Sea possess 12 nautical miles
territorial sea and 200 nautical miles exclusive economic zones (EEZs). Thus, the South China Sea is
not only international waters, instead, it is also overlapping exclusive economic zones. According to
UNCLOS, disputes over exclusive economic zones must be resolved through negotiations by the
contending states. Many of these contending Southeast Asian states have negotiated their maritime
boundaries, however, China fails to comply. China claims that it owns all of the South China Sea, and

music is. Breaking away from the traditional idea that music stems solely from the musician s

music is based on the idea that all sounds can work cooperatively to create music, including those

Strongly influenced by the principles in Zen Buddhism and Indian music, Cage began to explore new
medians for music; He incorporated different elements by relying heavily on chance and randomness.
Cage worked hard to create pieces that detached himself, as the composer, far away from the piece

The Apology And Phaedo By Socrates
In the Apology and Phaedo, as Socrates prepares to die his friends are concerned about him and why
he does not fear death, but rather looks forward to this. Plato through Socrates makes this statement of
his beliefs of death and what lies beyond this final barrier of consciousness. Plato believes that we live
on through our souls and into another body. Socrates faces death with excitement because in his eyes
to die is to practice perfect philosophy. This comes from his Argument of Opposites and the Theory of
Forms. As we discussed previously Theory of Forms, states that everything in the world fits into two
categories, the abstract universals, things such as beauty itself, equality itself, and piety itself and the
second category is concrete particulars, things that exist in space and time, such as sunsets, music, and
people. However Socrates derives his confidence from a combination of the argument of opposites
and the theory of forms. This Argument from the Theory of Forms for the immortality of the soul: If
we assume the theory of forms is true, and there is a form of Life itself, then souls are the sources of
life because they participate in the form of life, then souls cannot participate in the opposing form of
life, death, at the same time, if the principle of non contradiction is true. Now since death is the
opposite of life, souls can t participate in it, therefore souls are immortal. Socrates makes these claims
to comfort his friends and followers who are concerned

fruits of their harvest (Walter, 1996). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, Saint (1997) used visual imagery to convey a message and assist the reader in
consciously and unconsciously relating the certain colors used in the book to the principles of
Kwanzaa and thus, later fostering a sense of pride whenever the colors are seen. For example, Saint
(1997) used the colors red, black, and green throughout the book to help children identify these colors
as symbols of the Holiday. Therefore, when the child later sees the colors they will automatically
relate the colors to the holiday, which will in turn assist the child in remembering the pride instilling
principles expressed by the holiday. Saint (1997) also explained in detail the significance of Kwanzaa
as well as the importance and meaning of its seven principles. Also, in order to clarify the meaning of
the principles, Saint (1997) explained the principles in writing as well as with a corresponding picture.
This in turn, provided the child with a visual representation to identify with the written explanation.
Additionally, Saint (1997) used phonetic spelling in addition to the standard spelling in order to help
the reader pronounce the African principles correctly. Overall, Saint (1997) did an excellent job of not
only introducing African American children to their African culture, but also attempting to instill a

Frankenstein As A Bildungsroman And The Way That People
Greg Repa
Dr. Arpaia
History 307
12 September 2015
Frankenstein
Within the first few years of life, babies gain a sense of self awareness. They start to realize that they
are different from the objects and people around them physically. There are many ways that people
can feel a sense of self identity or association within a group. People could identify themselves as
something small, like the town they are from or the school they attend. Or they could identify as a
bigger group of people like their religious beliefs and nationality. This paper will look at Frankenstein
as a Bildungsroman and the way that people in Europe during the nineteenth century could gain
knowledge and a view of self awareness and how people gain knowledge today. One thing that is
fascinating is that the nameless monster in the book is actually the Frankenstein that people tend to
think of, with the big square green head, whereas, his creator s last name is actually Frankenstein. This
is important because as the book progresses, the reader gets a sense that maybe the monster and his
creator, are not so different after all. Although Victor (the creator) was born with a family and has
friends, he distances himself from them when he finds his love for science. They also both try to help
humanity at first but then they both feel depressed and remorse from the recent past. They also both
use the weather and nature to indicate their mood and feelings. When it is nice outside he is hopeful

The Fight For Freedom By Iris Murdoch
Most developed nations are democracies where people have rights and freedoms to do as they please.
Unfortunately, abundant other nations restrict freedom because of the opinions of a select few, whom
happen to have further power. Freedom can be separated into many categories, such as social,
economic, political, and religious freedom. However, there can be certain extents to which one can be
practiced as somewhat of a contract to provide for the advancement of society. Persecutions, arguably
discrimination, have always unjustly interfered, and, therefore, these accommodations did not always
exist. Even in the most seemingly free country, oppression runs rampantly. In the mid twentieth
century, the fight for freedom saw itself expanding into the media, music, and, most effectively,
literature. Literature is the prime outlet to voice opinions, and, in most instances, it is consistent with
exposing injustices. Famously, Iris Murdoch incorporated numerous aspects and oppressions of her
personal life, and of her time period in general, into her novels. Freedom is the most outrageously
oppressed human right in the world, most eloquently in Iris Murdoch s Under the Net, Jackson s
Dilemma, and The Unicorn, and the paradigm deserves to be scrutinized.
Murdoch s background is crucial to understanding her intricate stories and ideas. Iris was originally
born in Ireland, but moved to Britain within the first five years of her life (Iris Murdoch). Murdoch
was known to have relationships

Essay about Depression and Anxiety in Persons with...
Depression and Anxiety in Persons with Divorced Parents In the recent years, divorce rates have been
continually trending upwards (Reiter, Hjorleifsson, Breidablik, Meland, 2013). It is factual that
children who have parents that have divorced typically face more obstacles in numerous aspects of life
than children who have married parents. Children that experience divorce have up to a 300% increase
in probability to be impacted by issues in mental wellbeing than their peers without an incident of
divorce in their parental structure (Shifflett Cummings, 1999). These issues can arise due to the
various conflicts that may come into play throughout the divorce process, or even the mere experience
of parental divorce for the child. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Whether moderate or severe, divorce serves long term contributions to depression and anxiety in
children regardless of age (Chase Lansdale, Cherlin, Kiernan, 1995).
Mental and Emotional Adjustment in Divorce with Age Numerous factors come into play pertaining to
the age of a child that undergoes the experience of parental divorce. As time passes, most research
states that both anxiety and depression impact children of divorce rather steadily. However, even after
adjusting, these emotional impacts are extremely consistent throughout the progression of life
(Størksen et al., 2005). Due to the inability to cognitively process and identify reasons that lead to
divorce, kids around the pre kindergarten age range are naïve to the situation. Around this age,
children depend on parental support in daily life to carry out tasks. This alteration of family structure
will impact smaller children more than older children, as the older child will have more outlets to
channel their mental tension (Reiter et al., 2013). According to data, children may not adjust well
emotionally and display bouts of anxiety, which may develop into depression at later ages (Kline,
Johnston, Tschann, 1991; Vousoura, Verdeli, Warner, Wickramaratne,

Censorship In China
The Internet has quickly become a worldwide resource for news, current affairs and freedom of
speech, but in many places across the world, censorship restricts this freedom and access. Different
governments all have different approaches regarding censorship, and these methods have both a
positive and a negative impact on society. Censorship can also be used to protect people, as it can
prevent people from seeing explicit content or being exposed to certain types of media at a young age.
Censorship is used by governments around the world to restrict the content is available to their
citizens, and prevent them from seeing any anti government propaganda. By filtering online resources,

As of June 1st 2013, Singapore updated their internet censorship laws to include new, stricter
regulations regarding the online news world (C, 2013). Online censorship is not a new idea in
Singapore. It was first discussed by the government in 1991, and has been an ongoing debate ever
since (Ang and Nadarajan, 1996). The thought behind censorship in Singapore stem from the idea that
media can have negative effects on their consumers, it is therefore wiser to err on the side of caution
through censorship (Ang and Nadarajan, 1996). Official regulations began in July 1996 (Efa.org.au,
2002), and there has been many revisions since then. In 2002, the Singapore Broadcasting Authority
stated that Users in Singapore...have access to all material available on the Internet, with the exception
of a few high impact illegal websites (Efa.org.au, 2002), but as of 2015, blocked websites are those
that contain content that the community regards as offensive or harmful to Singapore s racial and
religious harmony, or against national interest including sites that promote or contain pornography,
remote gambling and illegal activity (Mda.gov.sg, 2015). For the most part, this censorship is helpful
to society, as it ensures that internet users will have a positive online

1. At the end of the case, Bacon finds himself in a difficult situation due to the leaking of confidential

Italian American Reputation Play Analysis
On the thirtieth of October, I went to watch the play Italian American Reconciliation. The time of era
of this play was in the late 1980s in Little Italy, New York. In this play, the characters makeup was a
little different from the actors of the first play I watched, Anna in the Tropics. Instead of their faces
being plain and simple, these actors had more color to their face, especially for the females. The males
had average natural makeup where the females had some fun playing with addition colors. The
character Teresa had wore a thin liner with extremely dark brows and a nice red lip color. As for Aunt
May, she had more of a dramatic look with thick liner with a load of eyeshadow and load of blush and

  • 3. The Heart Of The Lungs The Lungs are a part of every living human and animal that exist today. The lungs are classified as one of the hardest working organs in the body, besides the heart. They can expand and contract up to 20 times a minute or more to provide oxygen to be distributed to tissues in all parts of the body. They are considered to be the largest organ in the body. Taking up over forty percent of the chest cavity. Due to the size, we can only have two. The heart takes up the other space in the upper cavity. Each lung is made up of a sponge like material of tissue. They have been divided up into sections called lobes. The right lung has three lobes and the left lung only has two. These are called the superior, middle, and inferior. The average size of the lungs is 11 in. in length. Most normal adult human s lungs are about the same size. The normal lungs have an average weight of 234 grams or so. The weight depends a lot on the health of the lung. The average pair of human lungs can hold about 5 liters of air. Approximately, a healthy human can breathe up to 24480 times in a day. The lungs are red color because it is smooth muscles. It is made of all muscle tissue. The job of my organ is to take oxygen from the air and carbon dioxide is exchange. It does its job with the millions tiny grape likes cells that are called alveoli, which allows oxygen to seep into the capillaries or the thin wall that air sacs where carbon dioxide exchange take place. ... • 4. Bill Miller Essay 1. How well has Value Trust performed as of the date of the case? As of 2005, Value Trust had outperformed its benchmark index, the S P 500, for 14 years consecutively. Given that the next longest period of sustained performance was only half as long, 14 consecutive years of excellent performance set a record as the longest streak of success for any manager in the mutual fund industry. The average annual total return for the past 15 years was 14.6%, which was higher than the S P s 500 by 3.67%. Value Trust had 36 holdings, 10 of which accounted for nearly 50% of the fund s assets. Morningstar gave Value Trust a five star rating. 2. What might explain the fund s performance? Some observers attributed the success in fund s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Miller is an adherent of fundamental analysis, an approach to equity investing he had gleaned from a number of sources. Miller s approach was research intensive and highly concentrated. Nearly 50% of Value Trust s assets were invested in just 10 large capitalization companies. While most of Miller s investments were value stocks, he was not averse to taking large positions in the stocks of growth companies. Overall, Miller s style was eclectic and difficult to distill. Several key elements of Miller s contrarian strategy included: 1) buy low price, high intrinsic value stocks; 2) take heart in pessimistic markets; 3) remember that the lowest average cost wins; 4) be wary of valuation illusions; 5) take the long view; 6) look for cyclical and secular underpricing; 7) buy low expectation stocks; 8) take risks. 4. What is the efficient markets hypothesis? What does it imply about the role of portfolio managers? The Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH) states that it is impossible to beat the market because stock market efficiency causes existing share prices to always incorporate and reflect all relevant information. According to the EMH, stocks always trade at their fair value on stock exchanges, making it impossible for investors to either purchase undervalued stocks or sell stocks for inflated prices. Thus, portfolio managers should find it impossible to outperform the overall ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Individualism Vs Society, A Doll s House Individualism vs Society, A Doll s House Struggle In the 19th century Victorian society, individuals were expected to follow strict generalized standards for what is considered, acceptable conduct. With his play, A Doll s House , Ibsen captures conflicts, especially for women, to abide by the standards placed by society. While Nora the main character at first seems to fulfil her role as the perfect mother and wife, she is eventually divided between her obligations as a woman, and her need to express her true self. On the other hand, Nora s husband Torvald, strictly abides by what society has deemed honorable and is only worried about the outside perception of himself. This relentless need to maintain a façade impedes him to accept Nora s rebellious actions; and fears that her actions will turn their family into outcasts of society. Ibsen portrays, through several characters in the play A Doll s House , the struggle of individuals to express their original true self in a repressive Victorian society, while at the same time fulfill their societal expectations. Throughout the play, Nora experiences a metamorphosis that will change her perceptions of a fulfilled life. At first, Nora seems to be the perfect wife and mother of the Victorian society. She is eager to please her oppressive husband in every way that he wants and dutifully cares for her children. However, Rahman points out that It s a pretention of happiness and fulfillment, whereas her identity her true self ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Illusion in Madame Butterfly Essay Illusion in M. Butterfly In David Henry Hwang s play M. Butterfly we are introduced to Rene Gallimard who has unknowingly been sexually involved with another man for twenty years. The idea of mistaken gender within the play causes the reader to question how could one mistake his/her lover s gender for so long? In Rene Gallimard s search for self identity he ignorantly chooses illusion over reality. Hwang effectively uses the opera Madame Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini as a framework to mold the main character, Rene Gallimard. Gallimard longs to be like the hero in Madame Butterfly, Benjamin Franklin Pinkerton, who dominates and possesses a beautiful Asian woman. Within the drama Gallimard concedes that he is not very attractive and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As the drama progresses so does Gallimard and Song s relationship. Upon becoming intimate Song exclaims, No...let me...keep my clothes. [. . .] Turn off the lights (761). Song s repeated modesty should invoke curiosity within Gallimard but he chooses to overlook her strange requests. As the readers, we too could find nothing wrong with her modesty at this point, but during the trial, revealing facts are exposed. Song replies to the judge I suppose he might have wondered why I was always on my stomach (780). Now that we have the details of their sexual relationship, it is quite clear that Gallimard chooses illusion over reality in order to maintain his new identity. Gallimard becomes as sick as his idol Pinkerton when talks about Song s reaction to his affair It was her tears and her silence that excited me, every time I visited Renee (769). Another example of Gallimard s choice of illusion is his belief that Song bore his child. Song claims she is pregnant and then runs away only to come back several months later with a child. Gallimard never sees her pregnant yet he still chooses to turn his back on reality and looks to illusion. In the end Gallimard confesses to his choice of illusion and wishes to remain there because the reality is to ugly to face. When Song reveals her true gender Gallimard confesses I knew all the time somewhere that my happiness was temporary, my love a deception. But my mind kept the knowledge at bay (783). In ... Essay about The Matrix lt;a href= quot;http://www.geocities.com/vaksam/ quot; gt;Sam Vaknin s Psychology, Philosophy, Economics and Foreign Affairs Web Sites It is easy to confuse the concepts of quot;virtual reality quot; and a quot;computerized model of reality (simulation) quot;. The former is a self contained Universe, replete with its quot;laws of physics quot; and quot;logic quot;. It can bear resemblance to the real world or not. It can be consistent or not. It can interact with the real world or not. In short, it is an arbitrary environment. In contrast, a model of reality must have a direct and strong relationship to the world. It must obey the rules of physics and of logic. The absence of such a relationship renders it meaningless. A flight ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A group of human miscreants succeeds to learn the secret of the Matrix. They form an underground and live aboard a ship, loosely communicating with a halcyon city called quot;Zion quot;, the last bastion of resistance. In one of the scenes, Cypher, one of the rebels defects. Over a glass of (illusory) rubicund wine and (spectral) juicy steak, he poses the main dilemma of the movie. Is it better to live happily in a perfectly detailed delusion or to survive unhappily but free of its hold? The Matrix controls the minds of all the humans in the world. It is a bridge between them, they inter connected through it. It makes them share the same sights, smells and textures. They remember. They compete. They make decisions. The Matrix is sufficiently complex to allow for this apparent lack of determinism and ubiquity of free will. The root question is: is there any difference between making decisions and feeling certain of making them (not having made them)? If one is unaware of the existence of the Matrix, the answer is no. From the inside, as a part of the Matrix, making decisions and appearing to be making them are identical states. Only an outside observer one who in possession of full information regarding both the Matrix and the humans can tell the difference. Moreover, if the Matrix were a computer program of infinite complexity, no observer (finite or infinite) would have been able to say with any certainty whose ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. The s Quest For Meaning Two mice, nibbling and gnawing, representing the inexorable entity, time, which exists as a constant threat to humanity; a dark pit with death as the only certainty; a ferocious beast forbidding escape; a single branch offering delay; a drop of honey attempting to conceal inevitable peril. The powerful metaphor embedded in this Buddhist parable serves as the platform for Leo Tolstoy (A Confession) in his quest for meaning. It offers a simplistic illustration of the common predicament faced by all of mankind, to which Tolstoy and fellow thinkers, Sigmund Freud (Civilization and Its Discontents) and C.S. Lewis (The Abolition of Man) attempt to provide a solution. Each thinker offers a unique conclusion based upon their respective definitions of the problem and its perpetuating influences. The thinkers focus their investigation on the authority of science, instinct, and faith. Tolstoy is distinct in his ability to rationalize toward a purpose independent of mankind itself; he alters the circumstances of life rather than man s capability to deal with such circumstances. Freud and Lewis confine their respective reasonings to the continuation and progression of mankind so as to better cope with the predicament of man. Their theories on the improvement of man and civilization serve only to extend the torment of mankind. Tolstoy does not hesitate to dismiss the significance of science as an answer to the predicament of man. He quotes Solomon explaining that in much wisdom is much ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They both provide valuable options for researchers in the field. These techniques can either be used separately in a research study or they can be combined to achieve maximum information. This paper will define the terms qualitative and quantitative; describe the similarities and differences between each; discuss how qualitative and/or quantitative research designs or techniques could be used in the evaluation of my proposed research; and discuss why linking analysis to study design is important. When both research designs are used together, more information can be gathered. Mixed methodology uses the numerical portion of the quantitative study design in combination with the descriptive aspect of the qualitative study. There are many similarities between these two designs, which make them compatible with each other. Whilst quantitative research may be mostly used for testing theory it can also be used for exploring an area and generating hypotheses and theory. Similarly qualitative research can be used for testing hypotheses and theories even though it is mostly used for theory generation (Hughes, 2006). Both of these designs may be similar with testing theory, they are also similar in the tools that they use and how the data is analyzed. Qualitative data often includes quantification (eg statements such as more than, less than, most as well as specific numbers). Quantitative (ie questionnaire) approaches can collect qualitative data through open ended questions (Hughes, 2006). These similarities are what make these two study designs compatible for each other. There are also some differences between these study designs, which may cause some problems for the inexperienced researcher. Quantitative research is objective; qualitative research is subjective. Quantitative research seeks explanatory laws; qualitative research aims at ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 15. Essay on Women in Ministry Women have been involved in Christian ministry since the very beginning of Christianity. It has declined and risen according to the acceptance of the environment. The two papers addressed in this essay document the rise of women ministers in the Holiness movement as well as the decline of women in the modern Pentecostal movement. In response to this decline in women in ministry, Courtney Stewart gave points which the UPCI should tackle to rectify the situation. In Holy Boldness Women Preachers Autobiographies and the Sanctified Self, the history of women in ministry is addressed. The second paper, written by David Norris, focuses mainly on the history of Pentecostal women in ministry. He gave a brief mention to the emergence of Holiness women preachers, and then fast forwards to the Pentecostal movement. Because many of the people involved in the Pentecostal movement had once been a part of the Holiness movement, women were generally accepted as ministers. However, even here women were relegated to the margins. They took the broken, burnt out, run down churches that no one else wanted. Many times these women would revitalized a run down church only to step down, or be shunted aside, so a man could take over as pastor. According to Norris, at the founding of the UPCI nearly 22% of the licensed ministers were women. This number has steadily declined over the past 50 years until only 3% of the licensed ministers are women. Norris gives four possible reasons for this: 1. Because women did not learn how to theologically defend their position at the beginning of the movement, they do not know how now that the climate has changed to where they must defend their calling. 2. There were many more denominations involved in the Pentecostal movement than just the Holiness groups who were not willing to license women. 3. There are little or no role models who promote women in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 16. Challenges And Advantages And Disadvantages Of Matrix... There are many types of structures that an organization might have, each of them comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages. Let us look at the benefits and drawbacks of three (or rather, five) of the more modern structures. Matrix organizations One of the biggest challenges for employees in a matrix organization is the fact that they have to report to multiple managers. With employees directly reporting to two or more supervisors, these supervisors need to be highly coordinated with one another to make sure that they re giving consistent orders. Otherwise, employees may be given orders from different managers that are very difficult to follow in unison. Even worse, orders from different managers can outright conflict. Employees can t follow these orders because they re mutually exclusive. This causes ambiguity and confusion as to what the employee should do. This problem can be avoided with high levels of communication and coordination between department managers and project managers though. Education is the priority; in fact, Barnes believed that the foundation should not be considered an art museum. As stated by Barnes, the purpose of the foundation was, to be maintained perpetually for education in the appreciation of the fine arts and as an educational experiment. Another ethical breach Glanton spearheaded in, was the decision to move the entire Barnes collection to downtown Philadelphia, rather than following Barnes s instruction to preserve the artworks perpetually in his estate. • 18. Battle Tactics During World War I World War 1 was a time of great bloodshed, and no battle demonstrated this fact more than the battle of Verdun (Feb 21, 1916 Dec 18, 1916). The near half a million casualties suffered during the battle of Verdun displayed the futility and uselessness of past battle tactics. France for the most part did not change its tactic, but along with the British began development of the tank. The tank was a terrifying tool for warfare, but Germany had a different solution to the problem. Through study of battle tactics used during the Russian Brusilov offensive (Jun 4, 1916 Sep 20, 1916) and the Italian Arditi (The daring ones) they developed the Sturmtruppen. The Italian Arditi would advance very closely behind an artillery bombardment on the enemy line and as soon as the bombardment stopped they would start throwing grenades. This was done to trick the enemy into thinking the bombardment was still going on. Then they would jump into the trenches and start killing the enemy with knives as grenades were still being thrown. O la vittoria, o tutti accopiati (Either we win or we all die) was the motto of the Arditi, and this phrase rang true for the Arditi. The strategy was effective until the enemy realized what was going on, at that moment the Arditi lost their advantage, and on many occasions most if not all troops were killed. This is were the Sturmtruppen stepped in and refined the tactic. With German Stormtroops the beginning would be similar to the Arditi, moving up under artillery cover. Though with the Germans their objective was not to hold the trench, but instead to push behind and take the flank allowing an easy victory. Unlike the Arditi, the Sturmtruppen had support. The days of physical misery and suffering that lead up to this final celebration of life were unbearable to watch. Having a terminally ill family member is hard because you know the days, weeks and months are numbered. Quality of life, what is that anyway? Each passing hour has the quality of life diminishing to unimaginable physical pain and anguish. Watching someone you love slip away and turn into a shell of who they once were is unbearable. This invitation is special. This special day and every precious hour will give the loved ones a time to say goodbye just before they die with dignity in physician assisted suicide. Terminally ill patients have the right to end their own lives using physician assisted suicide (PAS) without repercussions of laws and people with opposing opinions. According to an article from CNN.com, there are currently five states in the U.S. where physician assisted suicide is currently legal. In order to be eligible legally for PAS the patient must have six months or less to live. In the states of Oregon, California, Vermont, Washington and Montana a physician can prescribe medications to move along the death without being prosecuted for murder. • 21. Suspension bridges are able to work efficiently because of their cables, which are interesting from a mathematical perspective. Since the bridge s deck spans a long distance, it must be very heavy in weight by its own, not to mention all the weight of the heavy load of traffic that it must carry. Because of all this weight, this results in two active forces: compression and tension. The cable s parabolic shape results in order for it to effectively address these forces acting upon the bridge. For instance, the deck sags from all the weight of the traffic because of compression forces, which travels upwards the cables. The cables then transfer those compression forces downwards the vertical towers, down into the foundations buried deep within the earth. However, the cables receive the brunt of the tension forces, as they are supporting the bridge s weight and its load of traffic, being stretched by the anchors ends ... Currently, non renewable energy sources, like coal and oil, are more commonly used, since they are cheaper than renewable energies. In the European Union, 80% of the energy consumption demands are covered by fossil sources (B. SCHMITZ, 2013). But, non renewable energy sources are running out and they are also very harmful for the environment, since they generate greenhouse gases. So, it is very important to discover more renewable ways to generate energy. For a very long time, the only energy source that mankind had was the human muscle. After that they discovered the fire and the animal domestication providing them a source of heat and help from horses to plough their fields. The only other accessible sources of energy that they could explore were wind and water. Sails were used on ships allowing people to move across water, windmills and water wheels were used to grind grains and pump water. At the end the 18th century Europeans discovered the power of non renewable energy sources and started to use fossil fuels, first coal then oil and natural gas. With these new energy sources, a lot of new technologies were invented over the years until in 1700 and 1800 when the industrial revolution occurred. If both, husband and wife are working, it is always the woman doing the domestic work. But this is not always true. This is in fact a gender stereotype which has existed since many years. Maybe not all men or fathers do household chores, but many do. According to Catherine Rampell, a writer for The New York Times newspaper, on an average day, 66.6% men and 85% women report doing some sort of household activity. Almost everybody believe in this stereotype. Even if a man is sharing household work with his spouse or any other female in the house, his image is presented as if he does nothing. Even if he is contributing little, he is at least doing something, and something is definitely better than nothing. No man s conscious would allow him to see his wife or any female in the house do all the work in the house alone. Even if a man is going out for groceries, it is not considered a household work by the female, just because he did not contribute to do the work in the house. Women tend to see the results instead of the work done to get those particular results. The show of loyalty proves Burton s message of identity. This message is also showcased in the movie Miss Peregrine s Home for Peculiar Children. Basically, all of the Peculiars are the outcasts of the film. When Jake first enters the loop and meets Miss Peregrine, she says a quote that beautifully supports the message. As Miss Peregrine explains to Jake what Peculiars are, she says, We are what s known in common towns as peculiar. Because our abilities don t fit in the outside world, we live in places like this where no one can find us. Miss Peregrine. This quote helps to show the audience that the misfits couldn t fit in, but as the movie continues, the peculiars prove themselves as brave, merciful people with strong characters. In contrast, the times we do get to see the townspeople, they seem to be reckless, moody, unstable people. The words both sets of characters say shows just how different they are and just how much of a good thing being an outcast can be. Another great importance of theatre is the way it shapes the society. Firstly, theatre brings people together as a community, Greek theatre is a good example of this, especially during the festival of Dionysus, where the audience for plays would be over 1000 people. This gives the community something to talk about therefore bringing people together. • 40. The Dispute Between China And The Philippines Essay The Dispute between China and the Philippines over the South China Sea The territorial and maritime disputes over the South China Sea (SCS) have been ongoing for decades. The disputes have been considered to be one the fiercest contested in Asia. The South China Sea is an enclosed sea surrounded by several different states. China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Brunei, Taiwan, and Malaysia all surrounded the South China Sea. The main cause of tension in this dispute is because China claims to have historical sovereignty over all of the South China Sea. Associations of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have come up with different discussions and suggestions on how to end the disputes with favorable conditions for all contending states. They use the principles of the United Nation Convention of the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and form the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC). The states surrounding the South China Sea possess 12 nautical miles territorial sea and 200 nautical miles exclusive economic zones (EEZs). Thus, the South China Sea is not only international waters, instead, it is also overlapping exclusive economic zones. According to UNCLOS, disputes over exclusive economic zones must be resolved through negotiations by the contending states. Many of these contending Southeast Asian states have negotiated their maritime boundaries, however, China fails to comply. China claims that it owns all of the South China Sea, and therefore, has no need to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. John Cages Influence On Society As one of the most radical composers in the 20th century, John Cage introduced new ideas of what music is. Breaking away from the traditional idea that music stems solely from the musician s preconceived and structured arrangement of sounds from specific instruments, Cage s philosophy of music is based on the idea that all sounds can work cooperatively to create music, including those from the environment. Strongly influenced by the principles in Zen Buddhism and Indian music, Cage began to explore new medians for music; He incorporated different elements by relying heavily on chance and randomness. Cage worked hard to create pieces that detached himself, as the composer, far away from the piece itself as possible to allow the listener ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. The Apology And Phaedo By Socrates In the Apology and Phaedo, as Socrates prepares to die his friends are concerned about him and why he does not fear death, but rather looks forward to this. Plato through Socrates makes this statement of his beliefs of death and what lies beyond this final barrier of consciousness. Plato believes that we live on through our souls and into another body. Socrates faces death with excitement because in his eyes to die is to practice perfect philosophy. This comes from his Argument of Opposites and the Theory of Forms. As we discussed previously Theory of Forms, states that everything in the world fits into two categories, the abstract universals, things such as beauty itself, equality itself, and piety itself and the second category is concrete particulars, things that exist in space and time, such as sunsets, music, and people. However Socrates derives his confidence from a combination of the argument of opposites and the theory of forms. This Argument from the Theory of Forms for the immortality of the soul: If we assume the theory of forms is true, and there is a form of Life itself, then souls are the sources of life because they participate in the form of life, then souls cannot participate in the opposing form of life, death, at the same time, if the principle of non contradiction is true. Now since death is the opposite of life, souls can t participate in it, therefore souls are immortal. Socrates makes these claims to comfort his friends and followers who are concerned ... • 44. Kwanzaa Book Review Saint (1997) wrote a book to introduce children to the significance of the African American holiday of Kwanzaa. Kwanzaa is a non religious cultural holiday based upon the ancient customs of Africa. The holiday was created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga and is the first original African American holiday dedicated to African culture and spirituality (Saint, 1997). Additionally, the holiday is a time where African Americans honor the traditions of their African ancestors. According to Walter (1996), Dr. Karenga created the holiday based on the harvest festivals of several African cultures. Harvest celebrations were traditional throughout Africa and were a time where people gave thanks for the first fruits of their harvest (Walter, 1996). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Furthermore, Saint (1997) used visual imagery to convey a message and assist the reader in consciously and unconsciously relating the certain colors used in the book to the principles of Kwanzaa and thus, later fostering a sense of pride whenever the colors are seen. For example, Saint (1997) used the colors red, black, and green throughout the book to help children identify these colors as symbols of the Holiday. Therefore, when the child later sees the colors they will automatically relate the colors to the holiday, which will in turn assist the child in remembering the pride instilling principles expressed by the holiday. Saint (1997) also explained in detail the significance of Kwanzaa as well as the importance and meaning of its seven principles. Also, in order to clarify the meaning of the principles, Saint (1997) explained the principles in writing as well as with a corresponding picture. This in turn, provided the child with a visual representation to identify with the written explanation. Additionally, Saint (1997) used phonetic spelling in addition to the standard spelling in order to help the reader pronounce the African principles correctly. Overall, Saint (1997) did an excellent job of not only introducing African American children to their African culture, but also attempting to instill a sense of cultural pride and ... • 47. Frankenstein As A Bildungsroman And The Way That People Greg Repa Dr. Arpaia History 307 12 September 2015 Frankenstein Within the first few years of life, babies gain a sense of self awareness. They start to realize that they are different from the objects and people around them physically. There are many ways that people can feel a sense of self identity or association within a group. People could identify themselves as something small, like the town they are from or the school they attend. Or they could identify as a bigger group of people like their religious beliefs and nationality. This paper will look at Frankenstein as a Bildungsroman and the way that people in Europe during the nineteenth century could gain knowledge and a view of self awareness and how people gain knowledge today. One thing that is fascinating is that the nameless monster in the book is actually the Frankenstein that people tend to think of, with the big square green head, whereas, his creator s last name is actually Frankenstein. This is important because as the book progresses, the reader gets a sense that maybe the monster and his creator, are not so different after all. Although Victor (the creator) was born with a family and has friends, he distances himself from them when he finds his love for science. They also both try to help humanity at first but then they both feel depressed and remorse from the recent past. They also both use the weather and nature to indicate their mood and feelings. • 48. The Fight For Freedom By Iris Murdoch Most developed nations are democracies where people have rights and freedoms to do as they please. Unfortunately, abundant other nations restrict freedom because of the opinions of a select few, whom happen to have further power. Freedom can be separated into many categories, such as social, economic, political, and religious freedom. However, there can be certain extents to which one can be practiced as somewhat of a contract to provide for the advancement of society. Persecutions, arguably discrimination, have always unjustly interfered, and, therefore, these accommodations did not always exist. Even in the most seemingly free country, oppression runs rampantly. In the mid twentieth century, the fight for freedom saw itself expanding into the media, music, and, most effectively, literature. Literature is the prime outlet to voice opinions, and, in most instances, it is consistent with exposing injustices. Famously, Iris Murdoch incorporated numerous aspects and oppressions of her personal life, and of her time period in general, into her novels. Freedom is the most outrageously oppressed human right in the world, most eloquently in Iris Murdoch s Under the Net, Jackson s Dilemma, and The Unicorn, and the paradigm deserves to be scrutinized. Murdoch s background is crucial to understanding her intricate stories and ideas. Iris was originally born in Ireland, but moved to Britain within the first five years of her life (Iris Murdoch). Depression and Anxiety in Persons with Divorced Parents In the recent years, divorce rates have been continually trending upwards (Reiter, Hjorleifsson, Breidablik, Meland, 2013). It is factual that children who have parents that have divorced typically face more obstacles in numerous aspects of life than children who have married parents. Children that experience divorce have up to a 300% increase in probability to be impacted by issues in mental wellbeing than their peers without an incident of divorce in their parental structure (Shifflett Cummings, 1999). These issues can arise due to the various conflicts that may come into play throughout the divorce process, or even the mere experience of parental divorce for the child. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Whether moderate or severe, divorce serves long term contributions to depression and anxiety in children regardless of age (Chase Lansdale, Cherlin, Kiernan, 1995). Mental and Emotional Adjustment in Divorce with Age Numerous factors come into play pertaining to the age of a child that undergoes the experience of parental divorce. As time passes, most research states that both anxiety and depression impact children of divorce rather steadily. However, even after adjusting, these emotional impacts are extremely consistent throughout the progression of life (Størksen et al., 2005). Due to the inability to cognitively process and identify reasons that lead to divorce, kids around the pre kindergarten age range are naïve to the situation. Around this age, children depend on parental support in daily life to carry out tasks. This alteration of family structure will impact smaller children more than older children, as the older child will have more outlets to channel their mental tension (Reiter et al., 2013). According to data, children may not adjust well emotionally and display bouts of anxiety, which may develop into depression at later ages (Kline, Johnston, Tschann, 1991; Vousoura, Verdeli, Warner, Wickramaratne, ... As of June 1st 2013, Singapore updated their internet censorship laws to include new, stricter regulations regarding the online news world (C, 2013). Online censorship is not a new idea in Singapore. It was first discussed by the government in 1991, and has been an ongoing debate ever since (Ang and Nadarajan, 1996). The thought behind censorship in Singapore stem from the idea that media can have negative effects on their consumers, it is therefore wiser to err on the side of caution through censorship (Ang and Nadarajan, 1996). Official regulations began in July 1996 (Efa.org.au, 2002), and there has been many revisions since then.
