How Did Florence Nightingale Influence Modern Nursing

Florence Nightingale
Florence Nightingale who has been described as the founder of modern nursing was born to a English
family in Florence on May 12, 1820. Nightingale was born to a very religious, and wealthy family and
was often encouraged to attend church as a girl. When Nightingale turned 24 she decided that she had
the desire to work in hospitals, but her family strongly disapproved due to the hospital conditions at
the time. Her parents finally gave her permission to attend a prestigious nursing school in Germany. In
1853 Nightingale took charge of a charity which took care of women in distressed circumstances.
After the breakout of the Crimean War Nightingale decided to organize a team of nurses to help tend
to wounded British soldiers. After arriving in Constantinople Nightingale observed that the condition
at the British hospital were terrible and quickly sought to fix this issue. Even though the British Army
did not have enough medical supplies available Nightingale still managed to ... Show more content on

In 1858 the king named named Nightingale the leading expert of nursing and sanitation in India. In
1907 Nightingale became the first woman to be awarded the order of merit. Nightingale was widely
known to not have no personal life due to her belief that service to God is always the top priority for
everyone. In addition to this Nightingale opposed women s rights because she believed that women
are selfish creatures . Nightingale never recovered from the physical strain of the Crimean war and
was confined to her bed for most of her later life. Even though she was physically limited Nightingale
worked tirelessly until her death at the age of 90. But when she died she had published over 200
reports and pamphlets on various medical issues including hospital administration, and wartime

Biophilia Hypothesis Essay
Biophilia hypothesis is the theory that humans possess a natural tendency to seek connections with
nature and other forms of life (Britannica). Many advantages are hypothesized to be a result of
spending more time in nature such as improved memory, test scores and mood for students. A study
conducted in Barcelona Spain during 2012 2013 on students between the ages of seven to ten years
old yielded results that would accept the green space hypothesis. It was observed that students had a
year increase in working memory and a year reduction in inattentiveness when surrounded by a green
space (CITE). Plants were located at home, in the neighborhood, and in school therefore the students
were constantly exposed. The study linked the positive benefit between exposure to green space and
cognitive development amongst school children. Chris Mooney reflects upon this study in his article
Why Green Spaces are good for your kid s brain and notes that the greenness of the commute and
school made the difference in showing improvement over time in higher order working memory and
attentiveness. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He additionally stated test scores improved by about five percent over the experimental time period
(Nieuwenhuijsen.) All of the researchers apart of the Barcelona study hypothesized what mechanism
with exposure to the environment creates the beneficial effects. The authors listed possibilities such as
less exposure to distracting noise, the likelihood of engaging in outdoor exercise, or the Biophilia
hypothesis. Biologist E.O. Wilson who helped create this theory proposed that we have a
psychological need for green landscapes. Therefore, when deprived of greenery, the human psyche has

Heartbreaking Infant Morality in Ohio Essay
Infant Mortality in Ohio The Columbus Dispatch editorial Saving Our Kids gives a disturbing look at
the high infant mortality rates in Ohio, and their plan to decrease these fatalities. It is truly shocking
when beginning to take a look at these numbers. The Columbus Dispatch stated, In Ohio, in 2011,
more than one thousand children died before their first birthday . These numbers tell us that Ohio is
failing our infants when it comes to keeping them healthy. Imagining the heartbreak and devastation
that comes with having to bury a child is unthinkable. That being said, why is Ohio s infant death rates
so high? One issue is our inadequate healthcare system. The United States health care currently ranks
... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These five factors alone accounted for sixty one percent of infant mortalities in Ohio from 2006 to
2010 (Ohio Department of Health). Some of these factors can be drastically reduced with increased
education among women whether they are pregnant or not. The old saying knowledge is power
becomes of upmost importance when it can save a child s life. The increase of education on smoking
cessation, prenatal care, nutrition, and infant sleeping precautions during pregnancy can help to lower
these rates. If mothers were better educated on these topics the rate of compliance would increase and
the risks that come along with them can be decreased as suggested by The Ohio Collaborative to
Prevent Infant Mortality (OCPIM). Poverty has also been shown to play a role in infant mortality.
Living in poverty has been linked to significant rises in stress levels due to lack of money, poor living
conditions, and high crime rates. Women who live in poverty stricken areas are also less likely to have
access to quality healthcare, and these everyday stresses cause an increase in stress hormones. When
these hormones are increased your blood pressure rises, and the body tends to store fat causing weight
gain both of which have harmful effects on pregnancy as indicated by the Secretary s Advisory
Committee on Infant Mortality. As poverty rates rise in the United States, solutions for how to
decrease the correlation between poverty and infant

Layers Of Airport Security
Identifying terrorists at airports is a very difficult task for homeland security professionals since
terrorists can blend in very well with the more than 650 million law abiding passengers that travel
every year via U.S. airports (United States Government Accountability Office, 2014). The security
layered approach is a security strategy that helps reduce the risk of a terrorist infiltrating into an
airport by employing a wide range of tools and programs that can enhance airport security (Hoggan,
2012). The numerous layers of security are designed to be able to prevent, identify, and stop a terrorist
attack in case one of the previous security layers failed to do so (Cason, Lu, Schreckengast, 2010, pg.
88). Each security layer has their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This strategy allows DHS to be able identify suspicious individuals before they even arrive to the
airport. The names of passengers are being matched against the database when the passengers book
their flights prior to arriving to the airport, which is more time and cost effective for DHS than having
to identify suspicious individuals among large crowds of people at airports.
As mention above, all layers of security have some weak points and the Secure Flight program is not
the exception. It may be very difficult for DHS to be able to effectively screen suspicious individuals
without disrupting the flow of passengers since the screenings of suspicious individuals may take
longer in comparison to those passengers who do not pose a threat or are not considered suspicious.
Therefore to combat the Achilles heel of the Secure Flight program, DHS has created the TSA pre
check program. The TSA pre check is a program in which passengers, usually those passengers who
travel frequently, voluntarily submit themselves to extensive background investigations and if the
passenger is able to meet the requirements posted by DHS, then the passenger will be allowed to go
through expedite screenings when they travel as the passenger will be considered by DHS a Trusted
passenger

A Case Of A Correctional Officer Essay
They went further on to inform us that only a pretrial would be taking place, since a new information
being submitted by a correctional officer was to be debated as to whether it was substantial enough to
be admitted as evidence. Moreover, because we arrived earlier than the original time for the Riker s
island pretrial, we witnessed a brief trail which to me wasn t informative because very little could be
heard from what the judge, prosecutor and a different defense attorney were discussing. Since I could
retain very little information from that trial, I took a quick glance at the interior structure of the court
room. To accurately present the surroundings of the court room without interrupting the ongoing trail,
I imagined myself standing at the door we entered through to the room. With my back facing the door,
I pictured the room as having seats arranged much like how churches have long chairs that could
occupy a number of individuals, a long aisle that separated the seating into sections of right and left
with the male and female prosecutors of the cases chairs and computers in front of the seats on my
right and the defense attorneys with their clients on the left. The seating sections for observers had
ropes in front of them, separating them from where the prosecutors, lawyers, defendants, judge,
security and the juror were seated. Both the right and left seats had the first roll of seats cleared by the
security with have no sitting on them, a phenomenon that I still

Contributions Of The Italian Renaissance
The Renaissance was a time of rebirth and a transition from the medieval time to the Early Modern
World. It emphasized human beings, their achievements, interests, and capabilities. This time period
was a gateway to the modern world and was essential for the improvement of human life. At the time
there were two main Renaissances, the Northern, and the Italian. The Italian Renaissance took place
from the 1400s to the 1700s, just after the plague spread through. One of the major reasons why the
Renaissance started in Italy was because of how fast the plague got through and spread throughout the
rest of Europe. The Northern Renaissance took place from the 1400s to the 1600s, because the ideas
from Italy spread to and then throughout Europe. Location was a key factor in where the rebirth would
take place. The Italian Renaissance took place in Florence, Italy. Florence had been the center of the
Roman Empire, which encouraged the rebirth to happen in a rapid pace. Another reason why the
Italian Renaissance took place in Florence was because of it s location along the Mediterranean Sea,
which aided trade and cultural diffusion. The Northern Renaissance took place in Flanders. Flanders
had sufficient amount of trade, but also an immense economic growth that caused the North to start a
renaissance of their own.
The Renaissance encouraged many advances in science, technology, art, literature, mathematics and
much more. In Italy the art was enhanced to look more realistic and

Arctic National Wildlife Refuge Dispute
Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, or ANWR, is a refuge geared toward preserving national wildlife in
northeastern Alaska. ANWR is about 19 million acres, in space, and contains a potential drilling spot
for oil and petroleum. The potential drilling spot is a small area known as the 10 02 Area. It is only 1.5
million acres, or 8%, of ANWR, would even be considered for development (What is ANWR). The
controversy surrounding ANWR is whether to drill or not to drill into the 10 02 area. Some people
want to preserve the wilderness and to find more fuel efficient technologies. Others want to lower gas
prices and to create more job opportunities. If the government decides to drill for oil, it could possibly
lead to about 17 billion barrels of oil, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Drilling in ANWR could greatly benefit the United States. It could boost the economy, decrease
foreign oil trade, lower oil prices worldwide and create about 750,000 jobs, throughout the United
States. On the other hand it could ruin ecosystems and tamper with wildlife s habitats, for a less than
significant amount of oil. Either way a decision has to be made. Prudhoe Bay is steadily declining.
The question is whether the government wants to continue paying the high price of foreign imports or
drill at ANWR and potentially ruin fragile and ecologically sensitive ecosystems.

The Time Machine by H.G. Wells

Time traveling, a concept known to modern man as inconceivable, but in The Time Machine, by H.G.
Wells, this fathom of human fantasy has come to life. Wells entangles a unique blend of contrasting
characters, conflicts of capitalist verses laborer divisions, and foreshadowing of the destruction of
humanity to seem together this novel of visionary proportions. The Time Machine is a bleak and sober
vision of man s place in the Universe. (McConnell Pg.1581)
Well s use of characters in The Time Machine brings a heavy sense of contrast and diversity into the

The Morlocks, on the other hand from the Eloi, are the laborer and harsher branch of humanity. The
Morlocks are hairy and monstrous creatures with red glowing eyes and razor sharp teeth. He is
supprised to learn of another people, the Morlocks, ugly, fearsome, and subterranean. (Molson Pg.600)
The Morlocks live under ground in a subterranean environment running machines and underground
factories. Due to their adaptations to their underground living environment, the Morlocks only come
to the upper world in the dark, for they cannot stand the glare of sunlight. They are strange little
beings whose pallid bodies are just the half bleached color of the worms and things one sees preserved
in spirit in a zoological museum. They are chinless, and in their faces are set great lidless, pinkish grey
eyes that glow of red. At night they leave their subterranean world to hunt down Eloi for food.
(McConnell Pg.3865)
The next character is the Time Traveler himself, who remains nameless throughout the whole novel.
He is an inventor with an infatuation of the future and Darwin s theory of the fourth dimension. The
Time Traveler is middle class citizen, just as Wells was in his day. The traveler is highly concerned
with the world to come and has spent years perfecting his spectacular machine. It took two years to
make, retorted the Time Traveler. (Wells Pg.14)

Van Wassenhove (2006) came up with five key elements for creating an effective disaster

Richey (2009) came up with four theoretical perspectives which can support to build up effective

A Report On Telus Corporation
This first work term was done at Telus Corporation (also known as TELUS), one of the three major
telecommunications companies operating in Canada. The duration of the work term was spent
working in the Enterprise Architecture department as a Technology Architecture Assistant, and
working with the Wireless Development team as a temporary Software Tester. Working as a
Technology Architecture Assistant, main responsibilities included the managing of the content within
an internal department SharePoint site, aiding with the relaunching of a database synchronization
process, and the updating of charts report documents for the end of the first quarter. First, the co op
student was required to familiarize themselves with all the documents and lists present on the internal
department SharePoint site, and propose content which should be deleted or archived due to no longer
being relevant. By the end of the term, a means of identifying content to clean up was derived, and the
actual action of deletion and archiving was carried out. Secondly, the student was required to studying
a pre existing synchronization process that previously took place in Microsoft Access which
synchronized the contents of an external database with a list in SharePoint. Since the synchronization
process had stopped working prior to the arrival of the co op student, the student was required to find
a means to reproduce a working version of the process. The third major task, the updating of charts

Analysis of Music Video Essay
Analysis of Music Video
Aphex Twin Come to Daddy
This Aphex Twin video is certainly one of the most dissimilar music videos that I have studied. It
intertwines elements of different genres, to create a video so different to reality; it shocked the nation
when released. The director, Chris Cunningham, wanted to make an impact with this video which he
did with great style and distinction.
Story/Narrative
The video starts with quite a gentle and sombre feel to it, where you see an old woman walking her
dog. The dog however is not the small, yappy dog you would expect a old lady to own. On the
contrary, it is big and looks rather aggressive. This could be a subtle tie in with the ... Show more

As the video nears an end the face in the television finally becomes flesh and steps out. He is
portrayed as a monster, evil by nature and hideous to look at. The sort of fiend that is often seen in
horror movies. The monster then screams at the old lady, which gives the audience a sense of
revulsion as this seems evil to them. You are shown the girls vandalising the city once more before the
video ends.
The message that is possibly trying to be displayed is that television is evil. It turns people into similar
beings, and gives them ideas of violence and destruction. This is portrayed when the girls with the
same faces are terrorising the neighbourhood. The man coming out of the television shows the evil
that can be broadcasted across television networks.
Representation
The man that comes out of the television is being represented as rebellious, evil, nasty, scary and
dangerous. There are also elements of unusualness, and he comes across as quite psychotic. Just by
looking at him you can tell that he is monstrous, and is giving this message across. I think that the
television can also be seen as representation, because the monster comes out of it. I believe that the
video is trying to tell us that television spawns evil, and is thus the centre of malevolence. The old
woman is being portrayed as the innocence of people, in my mind. When you see an old woman, you

Matthew Doublets
The issued with the doublets
In the Matthew s account of the Gospel as well as in the Luke s there are several duplicates of the
same text, while in the Gospel of Mark the same text appears only once, one of this examples is found
in Mark, in the parable of the measure, (Mk. 4:25[NRSV]). The same declaration, almost word for
word appears twice in separate occasions in Matthew verses 13:12 and in 25:29 and in Luke 8:18 as
well as in 19:26. The same dynamic appears twenty two times in Matthew where as according to
scholars who support the outside sources theory, the doublets mentioned above allegedly prove that
the writers of Matthew and Luke both took liberty in benefiting from the Markan account as well as
the Q , M and that of the L sources. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
More than a few explanations have been given. First of all, scholars have contemplated the idea that
there is a possibility that there were two men in each occasion and that Mark has left one demoniac
out of the picture. Since Mark, is said by scholars to have written at least two decades before any of
the evangelicals. While this might be understood in Mark 10:46, when he mentions by name one of
the blind men or perhaps only one of them continued to followed Jesus, this is more of a problem in
this passage. What would have been the reason for the author of Mark to leave one person out? In the
case of the two demoniacs is it not more frightening and more dangerous and therefore a more
significant of a miracle to be challenged by two demonized men than one? It is difficult to understand
why the two Mark and Luke, who of course may have never read Matthew, would be so consistently
different without any reason or hidden agendas. Secondly, some experts have disputed that it is merely
the nature of miracle stories to grow in the telling. This elucidation is totally unsophisticated and
simplistic. Moreover, if the stories were overstated, why the number would always be two? Why
would it not some of the stories have had two or four, perhaps seven or six? The probabilities for this
to accord are minor, however, that the doubling is simply due to such a

The Prevalence Of Tommy John Surgery
The prevalence of Tommy John surgery, reconstruction of the Ulnar Collateral Ligament in the elbow,
in Major League Baseball pitchers has been growing significantly over the past fifteen years. This
injury results from overuse of the elbow joints as a result of thousands of pitches over many years.
According to Liu et al, an overall increase occurred in the number of UCL reconstructions performed
on MLB pitchers from 1999 to 2014. No more than fourteen MLB pitchers underwent surgery in any
one year between 1999 and 2005, but seven of the next nine years has seen the number surpass this
mark, culminating in highs of 35 surgeries in 2012 and 30 in 2014. They also found a revision rate of
13.2% over the same time period, meaning that roughly one in eight pitchers who undergo Tommy
John surgery once will likely require it at least one more time in their career. Furthermore, the total
number of revisions from 2012 to 2014 (21) exceeds the total number of revisions from 2003 to 2011
(20) with no signs of this trend slowing down. This is significant because while receiving Tommy
John Surgery once is not necessarily career threatening like it once was, receiving it more than once is
far more likely to be so. According to doctors at Henry Ford Hospital, among pitchers who received
the surgery more than once, only 65% returned to the MLB in any capacity and none of those pitchers
were pitching more than three years after coming back (Verducci, Sports Illustrated).

Leckford Farm. At this particular farm they would be able to supply a small amount of produce to a
local Waitrose store in the surrounding area. The suppliers are an important stakeholder to any
supermarket because if the supplier delivers stock for the supermarket late then Waitrose would not be
able to continue with selling that particular item until the stock is delivered, furthermore if this item is
bought regularly by customers then there would be a lot of complaints unless there would be stock
reserved in case an issue such as this would occur. The

Capitalism In America
Capitalism is essentially the economic system in which private owners are able to control industry,
rather than the government. This system fundamentally drives American society and what makes
America particularly attractive to foreigners especially. In a capitalist society, class is not solely based
on birthright, but one has the ability to change his/her class based on income. Ideally, the more income
a person has, the more freedom and power this person is able to exercise. However, business moguls
and government have been known to exploit this fundamental feature of market economy and use it to
their advantage by harboring money (power). But before I put on my tin foil hat and start spewing on
about the government, allow me to ask this question: Where does this system come from? I believe in
order understand the oppressive issues of this system, it s crucial to understand the conditions that
formulated it. It s safe to say that American government is a descendent of English government. The
colonies along the east coast of North America were settled by mostly English settlers in the 17th and
18th centuries. As the English travelled across the Atlantic Ocean, they not only extended the rule of
the English monarchy but also transported their cultural heritage as well. Subsequently, the colonists
revolted against English monarch, King George III, during the American Revolutionary War in the late
18th century. Simply put, colonists felt devalued and exploited by the English

The Role and Function of the Fool in King Lear
Explore the role and function of ‘The Fool in ‘King Lear The Fool in ‘King Lear is a William
Shakespeare creation. Shakespeare has the ability to reveal a human character with an exceptional use
of language. He allows us to see more than just words on the paper; we re given a multi dimensional
insight into a character. Usually his characters aren t as straight forward as black or white, they are
invariably more complex. Edmund for example, it s easy to present him as the villain but Shakespeare
also shows us a sorry side to him as he attempts an apology before he dies. Shakespeare has given us
concrete images of things that are inexpressible, such as love. To articulate a multi faceted view of a
person and present it concisely with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Fool also likes to remind Lear that he has not only failed himself but his people too. ‘So out went
the candle and we were left darkling Lear was the light of the state now he has abdicated the light has
gone out and he s let his people down by leaving them in the incapable hands of his two daughters.
Eventually the Fool gets a glimmer of hope back from Lear when he realises his mistakes. ‘I did her
wrong he says about Cordelia. At this point the Fool switches back to being light hearted as he realises
stressing the point would only bring Lear down. Some critics say The Fool is responsible for pushing
Lear over the edge. I like to think it was necessary for Lear to go through madness so he can truly
appreciate the consequences of his actions. The Fool was helping Lear to ‘see better . Finally Lear s
conscience catches up with him at least to an extent when he says ‘poor fool and knave I have one
part in my heart that s sorry for thee. The Fool s sarcasm is blunt and hard hitting, just like Cordelia s
truth was in the ‘love test . ‘I am better than thou art now I am a fool thou art nothing . The Fool is
one of the Truth tellers in the play. Cordelia and Kent being the other two. However the fool doesn t
get punished for it like the others do. This is mainly due to the way he articulates himself and what
traditionally the role of the fool is. The main role of the fool was to entertain. Yet they

Symbolism In The Fall Of The House Of Usher
The term gothic is used to describe a work of literature characterized by the elements of mystery,
gloom, and fear. Combing the idea of gothic literature with Edgar Allan Poe s single effect yields a
completely terrifying masterpiece. There are a multitude of themes and symbols that can be pulled
from this work, but it is the narrator s description of his ambiguous setting that brings on the gothic
undertones of mystery, gloom, and fear in Edgar Allan Poe s The Fall of the House of Usher. The first
gothic undertone cleverly stashed away in the story is the mysterious ambiance of the setting. In the
beginning of the story, the location of the Usher house is never given to the readers for several
reasons. This lack of location aids Poe in creating a mysterious setting without him specifying it. This
effectively leaves readers in an unknown place that they know nothing about, which adds to the
overall mysterious tone of the setting . Upon entering the house the narrator says that he is conducted
through many dark and intricate passages (Poe 475). From this point on, readers do not have any
inkling as to where the narrator is in the house, barring several descriptions of several rooms the
narrator resides in. Not only is the setting ambiguous, but the overall time frame in never given to
readers as well.. No specified date is ever presented throughout the entire story and readers are only
aware of the fact that several days have passed here and there. The lack of detail

Theme Of Satire In Lazarillo De Tormes
Lazarillo de Tormes is a famous work of Spanish literature published anonymously. The novel is
written in the first person. Lazarillo de Tormes is known as a picaresque novel in that the novel is
written about a character of the lower class instead of a hero or upper class character. The novel has
several themes, but the theme that is constant throughout the novel is appearance versus reality. The
author utilizes several rhetorical devices in the novel which add emphasis to the story. The novel,
which was banned by the Spanish Crown during the time of the Spanish inquisition, is the story of the
birth and life Lazarillo de Tormes as he serves various masters and his struggle for survival. His
struggles are real. Many of the rhetorical devices serve to add humor to the novel as well. The author
uses satire to support the theme of appearance versus reality. The definition of satire is an attempt to
ridicule, mock, or criticize something or someone with humorous content. Satire is a rhetorical device
that is used throughout the novel. The author uses humor in the wake of misfortune. This is evident in
the chapter where Lazarillo serves his first master, a blind man. He treated Lazarillo horribly and also
starved him. Lazarillo learns many deceitful things from his master which will serve him well
throughout his life. Lazarillo s goal was to get away from the blind man. An example of satire is the
quote, What! You smelled the sausage and you couldn t smell the post? Ole ? Ole ? I jeered (Albert,
Michael 17). Lazarillo was making fun of the blind man for being able to smell the difference in the
sausage and rotten turnips, but he did not smell the post that Lazarillo purposefully guided him into.
Lazarillo was set on getting away from his first master and this is the clever way that Lazarillo gets
away. He leaves without knowing the condition of his first master. In the end, Lazarillo did manage to
outwit the blind man. The author s portrayal of the clergy can be considered satire as well. The clergy
is portrayed very negatively in the novel. The clergy is not noble, honest or Christ like which is what
people normally equate with a man that holds such a position. According to T. Anthony Perry, there is

Parapsychic Abilities Research Paper
If I could pick one superhuman ability, I would pick the ability to be parapsychic. Having psychic
abilities does it all: psychokinesis, telepathy, clairvoyance and precognition.
I would have endless, infinite knowledge. I would be able to breach human conscience and delve deep
into the pits of human thinking. I could harbour the entirety of human intelligence into my own little
mind. Maybe this foreshadows imminent doom. But I cannot help but be tempted by all these what ifs

I would hold the lives of billions in my hands, and I could crush those lives with the slightest twitch.
That sheer power is so distant, it is almost unimaginable. For to have all the knowledge of the world
would mean to be like God, would it not? I could be benign, or I could be cruel, and absolutely
nothing could stand in my way. That absolute freedom of will is what attracts me, what drives me to
choose this ability. I could be anyone, do anything.
But I would not be free from conscience. Would conscience allow me to execute these selfish
pleasures? These unthinkable deeds? I take back what I said, for conscience of mind is the highest
power. It masters all, and all minds suffer great pain at the caprice of this thing. And if I were to have
all these powers, yet have nothing at the same time no purpose, no love, what good would these
powers do me?
So with these powers I would enjoy life s little gifts. Enjoy the humour presented to me by the
oblivious ignorance of those around. Play small games on people, watch them go around in circles,
confused, then return to their usual routine of stupefaction. I could do harm to mankind, yet I would
not. I would choose to live out my days in obscur

Good Bye Lenin Symbolism
Within the film, Good Bye, Lenin!, the transition from a Socialist society to a post Socialist nation can
be seen in the film s utilization of symbolism. Symbolism used within the film can be understood as
reflective of the actual lives of German citizens, and from this imagery, the transition to post
Socialism can be analyzed as bittersweet. Good Bye, Lenin! portrayed the conditioning of Socialist
citizens by politicians, the citizens reliance on governmental support, the westernization of East
Germany, and the gendered roles of men and women within society. Within the film s symbolic
imagery, these portrayals further resonate the bittersweet transition of Germany s society and the
reality of its citizens. It is from these various depictions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
by Alex, the film s main character. The transition is best described by Alex when he expresses his
childhood interest in the cosmonaut, Sigmund Jahn. Within the film, as Alex verbally details his
childhood interest in the cosmonaut s departure into space, a spaceship is visually seen leaving earth
for space. The departure of the spaceship from earth into space is reflective of East Germany s
transition from Socialism to post Socialism. This depiction of the cosmonaut is symbolic of how new
and foreign post Socialism was to East German citizens, as space was to Sigmund Jahn. More
importantly, the ascent into space by Jahn is also symbolic of the wanted achievements of Alex.
Furthermore, this example of symbolism allows for the interpretation of distinct feelings of those
experiencing the transition from Socialism to post Socialism may have felt to be acknowledged.
Within Socialist societies, dependency on the government to require resources and resolution upon
being given certain opportunities can be noted. During the transition to post Socialism, uncertainty of
what a society free of Socialism would consist of, and freedom to exhibit characteristics that were
condemned under Socialism can also be noted. In acknowledging the differences of feelings felt
within Germany s Socialist and post Socialist society, the transition s description as bittersweet can be

The Rock, Pop And Soul Reader By David Brackett
The articles that I chose to examine from the Rock, Pop and Soul Reader by David Brackett are titled
On Wax by Paul Whiteman and Mary Margaret McBride, and What Songs the Beatles Sang by
William Mann. These articles came from different time periods in which there was a need for change
in music. The artists discussed in these articles took a chance, and experimented to create a new sound
that the audience enjoyed. Other important similarities include the specific changes made in the music,
and what made the sound more popular. Despite the similarities and differences, these articles have
also taught me much about the history of rock and roll including; the effects of change in music, and
the imagination and creativity behind it. When comparing the articles, one can determine that they are
similar. On Wax looks at the introduction of new music and technology in the 1920s that
revolutionized the music industry. However, What Songs the Beatles Sang, looks at the change in
music during the time of the British Invasion, and why the Beatles were successful. In On Wax¸ it
stated that in the 1920s, there was change of instrumentation in nearly all orchestral pieces (Whiteman
and McBride, 11). This included the addition of the tuba replacing the double basses, ordinary drums
replacing banjo, and tympani and snare replacing the regular drum. These additions created a muddy
and fuzzed up effect that listeners enjoy (Whiteman and McBride, 11). Similarly, in Musicology by

The Internet And Internet Stealing On The Internet
The internet may be the greatest invention in human history. It is able to connect almost all of the
seven billion people on the Earth, and allows these people to share their ideas, but it also creates an
intellectual property nightmare. The internet s main goal is the spread of information, but sometimes
the information isn t obtained in a way which agrees with laws put in place to protect patent and
copyright holders, and trademark owners. Since the invention and mass adoption of the internet, IP
laws have been struggling to keep up and law makers have had to start thinking about IP as it
pertained to the internet and how people used it.
Websites like Pirate Bay and Megaupload allowed for millions of people to illegally obtain copies of
their favorite software, songs, games, and much more. Stealing on the internet is not a hard thing to
do, the costs of copying are not high, and people can do it anonymously. There has been a push in the
last twenty years for a more aggressive enforcement of rights and laws for new forms of media.
In 1998 the world saw the passing of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) which was an
attempt by the US government to combat copyright to strengthen legal protection of intellectual
property rights holders in the midst of emerging new information communication technologies. The
law put pressure on internet service providers in order for service provider s legal liabilities to be
limited in the event one of their users violated copyright

Disadvantages Of Membrane Distillation
As time goes by, the fresh water supplement for living on the earth planet will become a serious
problem [1 3]. In addition, the Middle East is mentioned as one of the poorest regions in all over the
world in terms of water resources with less than 1% of the total available global freshwater per capita
[4, 5]. Therefore, one of the strategic options to satisfy the current and future request for fresh water in
countries established around Gulf is to build up desalination units. So, immediate need has arisen to
construct economic units for water desalination. Nowadays, it has been proved that membrane
separation processes have several advantages for desalination and water reuse of contaminated

MD is a thermally driven separation process that utilizes a hydrophobic, membrane as a contactor
media between two fluids kept at different temperatures where the separation is obtained by the mass

How Does Dickerson Use Ethos Pathos Logos
All good essays use some combination of the three rhetorical appeals: logos, ethos, and pathos. Logos
is an appeal to logical reasoning and how a writer puts together a cohesive, flowing argument. Ethos is
an appeal to a writer s credibility and good character, while pathos is an appeal to the emotions of the
audience. The Great White Way by Debra J. Dickerson is an essay that questions America s racial and
social norm of whiteness . Dickerson describes how the terms of being white have differed over the
past century and how this infatuation with race still defines American society. The Great White Way
by Debra J. Dickerson is a persuasive essay because of its proficient use of logos, ethos, and, pathos.
Dickerson s use of logos is prevalent from the very beginning of her essay. She challenges the reader
to define race and differentiate between blacks, whites, Hispanics, and Asians. Most readers would
define race as skin color but Dickerson proves this answer to be incorrect by asking what a black
person from Darfur and one from Detroit have in common beyond melanin (Dickerson 68). She then

Great White Way may miss that jarring change, but an active reader will feel shocked and intrigued by
it. Dickerson does this again when she defines race as an arbitrary system for establishing hierarchy
and privilege . . . and deciding who gets to kick whose butt (68). This tactic grabs the reader s

The Human Nervous System
The Human Nervous system is the most complex of the body, it is our essential controller; this system
is independent and governs our cerebrations, emotions, and functions. It additionally avails with
sending, receiving, and transforming nerve impulses. The sensory system incorporates nerves, tactile
organs, the mind, and muscles. This system is furthermore classified as the visceral motor system
separating it from the somatic motor system. The most essential organs of the ANS are named the
viscera of the Thoracic and abdominopelvic cavities. With this association we are incapable of
determining or feeling its existence in our bodies as it works unwillingly. This system explains our
flight or battle reaction, watching our body amid rest and reclamation, and observing our heart rate
and body temperatures on a steady premise.
The ANS has two subsystems, known as the Sympathetic and Parasympathetic; these two systems
vary somehow, the sympathetic nervous system increments vigilantness, heart rate, blood glucose
focus, circulatory strain, and blood stream to cardiovascular and skeletal muscle, and additionally
lessening blood stream to skin and digestive tract. Then again, the Parasympathetic division has a
cooling, impact on a large portion of the body s capacities. This is kenned as the resting, and
processing state. Both frameworks are constantly dynamic, and working. The thoughtful division
speeds up pulse and the parasympathetic division decelerates it. Each of these

Experts say sharks rarely ever attack humans unprovoked. Most shark attacks are caused by mistaken
identity, meaning they mistook you for a seal or a turtle, a shark s prey (see below). Sharks also

about 7% of shark attacks end in death. The three species of shark that are the most common
perpetrators behind shark attacks are: the bull shark, tiger shark and great white, in that order. This isn

Summary Of The Jungle By Upton Sinclair
In the Labor Union, many workers advocated for improvements of working conditions. In an excerpt
by Upton Sinclair s The Jungle describes the disgustingness of meatpacking industry and the
horrendous conditions the workers had to be in. Workers had to work at least 16 hours of labor a day
under dreadful working conditions, while being paid low wages. On top of that, many workers would
lose limbs while working; workers would lose their lives at work. The majority of the workers would
be children, due to children not asking for high wages and they are able to get into the machines to
work or fix them. Moreover, an important figure, Albert Parsons, came into the issue by fighting
against the terrible working conditions and demanding less working hour days with a higher wages for
workers. Thus, by the turn of the 20th century late 1800 and early 1900s, labor unions created
restrictions for successful businesses by placing rules that punish the rich on account of striking
against the conditions of work, Albert Parsons actions for less hours and higher wages and Anarchist
rioting. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Faults Of The Power Grid
Chapter: 1 Introduction
In today s modern world is heavily dependent on continuous and reliable power supply. Many of the
industrial processes, manufacturing, production, repairing, maintenance and not to forget a whole city
is heavily dependent on this continuous supply. It is a harsh reality to live in system without problems
is next to impossible. This problems in general are called faults in the power grid language.
On daily basis many faults occur on the power grid and steps are to be taken to eliminate/remove this
faults as quick as possible. If the fault persists for long it could result in a havoc and loss of huge
amount of money, which is unacceptable.
The faults mainly occurring on a power grid includes over current, over voltage and short circuit. It is
also a harsh reality that this problems cannot be to some extent kept in mere attention of humans,
whose capability and speed to some extent are limited.
Hence a fast acting mind is required that takes care of this problem. To solve this problem PLC
(Programmable logic controller) comes into the picture. It is used to operate relays (a type of switch)
which in turn assists the CB (circuit breaker) to isolate the faulty part from the healthy one as quick as
possible. It operates as per the logic stored in the mind of the PLC by the user. The program language
used in PLC is very much simple and user friendly as compared to other previously used software i.e.

reading and writing were very pleasant for me. In a way I guess, you could even say that some of
these experiences were even significate to me. It was the first time in my life that I can truly remember
feeling amusing about learning. It was the little things she did. Mom would purchase picture book and
check some out in the library as well. She would come into my room to read to me every night; she
influenced me through the sound of her voice how strong and soft her words would hit the surface
before I went into a deep sleep.
Waking up to a new not promised day is always special. I would jump out of bed say my prayers and
every time I got into the car with my Mom it was like an automatic game we would play, pushing the
resume button to continue spelling the places, but also to learn my colors, numbers, and directions. We
would travel forever in my mind. Mom words were, getting lost is half the fun. She made learning fun
it was never a dull moment. My Mom is not a dull person she has

How Did Henry Ford Use Mass Production In The 1920 s
Throughout the 1920 s, while the economy was stable, there was quite a large unemployment rate.
This allowed many individuals to come up with ways to provide for more jobs and make jobs more
cost effective. One method of this was popularized by Henry Ford known as mass production . This
being created in the 1910 s was brought to its best by henry ford creating more, easier, better paying
jobs for anyone. Mass Production techniques in industries and factories allowed larger numbers of
products to be created more easily with less effort, better wages for employees, and cheaper retail
costs. The most popular method of mass production was the efficient use of the Assembly Line, as
used by Henry Ford and the production of the Model T automobile.

The Persian War And The Ottoman Empire Of Persia Essay
Persian War
The Persian Wars were a series of conflicts between the Achaemenid Empire of Persia (modern day
Iran) and Greek city states that started in 499 BC and lasted until 449 BC. The collision between the
fractious political world of the Greeks and the enormous empire of the Persians began when Cyrus the
Great conquered the Greek inhabited region of Ionia in 547 BC. Struggling to rule the independent
minded cities of Ionia, the Persians appointed tyrants to rule each of them. This would prove to be the
source of much trouble for the Greeks and Persians alike. Before digging into the implications of
Persian War, it is necessary to examine the process of this war.
In the first stage of the war between Persia and Greece, the Persian armies were led by king Darius I
(550 486 B. C.). The Persians lost to the Athenians and their Greek allies. One of the famous land
battles was Marathon in 490 B.C. The Persians were defeated by the Athenians and the Plataeans.
News of the victory was delivered by a messenger who ran the 26 miles from Marathon to Athens, and
who died afterwards.
The second stage of the war saw the Persians arrive on the Greek shore with perhaps as many as
2,000,000 men, between their army and navy, under the command of king Xeres I (519 465 B.C.), son
of the deceased Darius I. An advanced party of only 5,000 Greeks, including Spartans, Phocians and
Locrians, under the command of one of the Spartan kings, Leonidas (a descendent of Hercules), held
off the

What Is The Shift In The Tortilla Curtain
In T.S. Boyle s novel, The Tortilla Curtain, the suburban upper middle class culture collides on
multiple occasions into that of poverty stricken illegal Mexican immigrants. These collisions of two
vastly different cultures begin when Delaney, a self proclaimed liberal humanist crashes his car into
Cándido, an illegal immigrant. These collisions of foiling cultures result in a negative shift of virtues
for Delaney. Boyle utilizes the negative shift in Delaney to comment on the upper middle class
individuals who identify themselves with positive values who never practice those values when their
own comfort and wellbeing is at risk. Following the crash, Delaney s self proclaimed liberal humanist
values start to be questioned. After Delaney identifies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the beginning of the novel, Delaney is shown as an activist against walls that are being planned to
be built around his community. Delaney states how as a liberal humanist, he is against the building of
the wall because it is wrong to separate themselves from society because they have more money.
Delaney s stance on the construction of the wall and his values shift after Delaney s car crash into
Cándido and the forest fire incident. After the car crash and the forest fire incident, Delaney becomes
an active advocate for the construction of the wall. Delaney argues that the construction of the wall is
necessary to ensure the safety of the people who live in his community. Delaney s shift in stance on
the construction of the wall was caused solely by the interactions he had with Cándido and the two
Mexican individuals; in both events, Delaney was never negatively impacted. However, because of the
inconvenience that these events caused Delaney, Delaney wishes to build the wall to prevent future
inconveniences from what he believes was caused by illegal Mexican

Interaction Between Humans And The Environment
Theme 1: Interaction between humans and the environment.
About 10,000 BCE, the area that is now the Sahara desert was a grassy steppe land. Humans
prospered by hunting wild cattle, collecting grains, or catching fish. After about 9000 BCE, people of
eastern Sudan domesticated cattle and became nomadic herders.
After 5000 BCE, the northern half of Africa became hot and dry, driving humans and animals to
gather around bodies of water. Both Egypt and Nubia relied heavily on agriculture at least by 5000
BCE. At first, Egyptians easily cultivated, while Nubians had to create fields. Eventually,
demographic pressures forced Egypt to create sophisticated methods of agriculture.
Theme 2: Development and interactions of cultures.
For thousands of years, when the Sudanese buried kings they also routinely executed a group of royal
servants and entombed them with the king to serve him in the afterlife. Royal servants of Egyptian and
Nubian kingdoms were also part of rituals similar to those from Sudan.
The Sudanese developed religious beliefs that reflected their agricultural society, recognizing a single
divine force as the source of good and evil, which they associated with rain.
The early pharaohs claimed to be gods living on Earth in human form. Egyptians associated early
pharaohs with Horus, the sky god. Later, they viewed rulers as offspring of Amon, a sun god. They
considered the pharaoh a human sun overseeing affairs on the earth, and believed the pharaoh merged

How Did Florence Nightingale Influence Modern Nursing Arya Afshang Mrs.Jackson Principles of Health Science 26 October 2014 Florence Nightingale Florence Nightingale who has been described as the founder of modern nursing was born to a English family in Florence on May 12, 1820. Nightingale was born to a very religious, and wealthy family and was often encouraged to attend church as a girl. When Nightingale turned 24 she decided that she had the desire to work in hospitals, but her family strongly disapproved due to the hospital conditions at the time. Her parents finally gave her permission to attend a prestigious nursing school in Germany. In 1853 Nightingale took charge of a charity which took care of women in distressed circumstances. After the breakout of the Crimean War Nightingale decided to organize a team of nurses to help tend to wounded British soldiers. Many advantages are hypothesized to be a result of spending more time in nature such as improved memory, test scores and mood for students. A study conducted in Barcelona Spain during 2012 2013 on students between the ages of seven to ten years old yielded results that would accept the green space hypothesis. It was observed that students had a year increase in working memory and a year reduction in inattentiveness when surrounded by a green space (CITE). Plants were located at home, in the neighborhood, and in school therefore the students were constantly exposed. The study linked the positive benefit between exposure to green space and cognitive development amongst school children. • 4. Heartbreaking Infant Morality in Ohio Essay Infant Mortality in Ohio The Columbus Dispatch editorial Saving Our Kids gives a disturbing look at the high infant mortality rates in Ohio, and their plan to decrease these fatalities. It is truly shocking when beginning to take a look at these numbers. The Columbus Dispatch stated, In Ohio, in 2011, more than one thousand children died before their first birthday . These numbers tell us that Ohio is failing our infants when it comes to keeping them healthy. Imagining the heartbreak and devastation that comes with having to bury a child is unthinkable. That being said, why is Ohio s infant death rates so high? One issue is our inadequate healthcare system. The United States health care currently ranks ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These five factors alone accounted for sixty one percent of infant mortalities in Ohio from 2006 to 2010 (Ohio Department of Health). Some of these factors can be drastically reduced with increased education among women whether they are pregnant or not. The old saying knowledge is power becomes of upmost importance when it can save a child s life. The increase of education on smoking cessation, prenatal care, nutrition, and infant sleeping precautions during pregnancy can help to lower these rates. If mothers were better educated on these topics the rate of compliance would increase and the risks that come along with them can be decreased as suggested by The Ohio Collaborative to Prevent Infant Mortality (OCPIM). Poverty has also been shown to play a role in infant mortality. Living in poverty has been linked to significant rises in stress levels due to lack of money, poor living conditions, and high crime rates. Women who live in poverty stricken areas are also less likely to have access to quality healthcare, and these everyday stresses cause an increase in stress hormones. When these hormones are increased your blood pressure rises, and the body tends to store fat causing weight gain both of which have harmful effects on pregnancy as indicated by the Secretary s Advisory Committee on Infant Mortality. As poverty rates rise in the United States, solutions for how to decrease the correlation between poverty and infant ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Layers Of Airport Security Identifying terrorists at airports is a very difficult task for homeland security professionals since terrorists can blend in very well with the more than 650 million law abiding passengers that travel every year via U.S. airports (United States Government Accountability Office, 2014). The security layered approach is a security strategy that helps reduce the risk of a terrorist infiltrating into an airport by employing a wide range of tools and programs that can enhance airport security (Hoggan, 2012). The numerous layers of security are designed to be able to prevent, identify, and stop a terrorist attack in case one of the previous security layers failed to do so (Cason, Lu, Schreckengast, 2010, pg. 88). Each security layer has their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This strategy allows DHS to be able identify suspicious individuals before they even arrive to the airport. The names of passengers are being matched against the database when the passengers book their flights prior to arriving to the airport, which is more time and cost effective for DHS than having to identify suspicious individuals among large crowds of people at airports. As mention above, all layers of security have some weak points and the Secure Flight program is not the exception. It may be very difficult for DHS to be able to effectively screen suspicious individuals without disrupting the flow of passengers since the screenings of suspicious individuals may take longer in comparison to those passengers who do not pose a threat or are not considered suspicious. Therefore to combat the Achilles heel of the Secure Flight program, DHS has created the TSA pre check program. The TSA pre check is a program in which passengers, usually those passengers who travel frequently, voluntarily submit themselves to extensive background investigations and if the passenger is able to meet the requirements posted by DHS, then the passenger will be allowed to go through expedite screenings when they travel as the passenger will be considered by DHS a Trusted passenger ... A Case Of A Correctional Officer Essay They went further on to inform us that only a pretrial would be taking place, since a new information being submitted by a correctional officer was to be debated as to whether it was substantial enough to be admitted as evidence. Moreover, because we arrived earlier than the original time for the Riker s island pretrial, we witnessed a brief trail which to me wasn t informative because very little could be heard from what the judge, prosecutor and a different defense attorney were discussing. Since I could retain very little information from that trial, I took a quick glance at the interior structure of the court room. To accurately present the surroundings of the court room without interrupting the ongoing trail, I imagined myself standing at the door we entered through to the room. With my back facing the door, I pictured the room as having seats arranged much like how churches have long chairs that could occupy a number of individuals, a long aisle that separated the seating into sections of right and left with the male and female prosecutors of the cases chairs and computers in front of the seats on my right and the defense attorneys with their clients on the left. • 7. Contributions Of The Italian Renaissance The Renaissance was a time of rebirth and a transition from the medieval time to the Early Modern World. It emphasized human beings, their achievements, interests, and capabilities. This time period was a gateway to the modern world and was essential for the improvement of human life. At the time there were two main Renaissances, the Northern, and the Italian. The Italian Renaissance took place from the 1400s to the 1700s, just after the plague spread through. One of the major reasons why the Renaissance started in Italy was because of how fast the plague got through and spread throughout the rest of Europe. The Northern Renaissance took place from the 1400s to the 1600s, because the ideas from Italy spread to and then throughout Europe. Location was a key factor in where the rebirth would take place. The Italian Renaissance took place in Florence, Italy. Florence had been the center of the Roman Empire, which encouraged the rebirth to happen in a rapid pace. Another reason why the Italian Renaissance took place in Florence was because of it s location along the Mediterranean Sea, which aided trade and cultural diffusion. The Northern Renaissance took place in Flanders. Flanders had sufficient amount of trade, but also an immense economic growth that caused the North to start a renaissance of their own. The Renaissance encouraged many advances in science, technology, art, literature, mathematics and much more. In Italy the art was enhanced to look more realistic and ... You are shown the girls vandalising the city once more before the video ends. The message that is possibly trying to be displayed is that television is evil. It turns people into similar beings, and gives them ideas of violence and destruction. This is portrayed when the girls with the same faces are terrorising the neighbourhood. The man coming out of the television shows the evil that can be broadcasted across television networks. Representation The man that comes out of the television is being represented as rebellious, evil, nasty, scary and dangerous. There are also elements of unusualness, and he comes across as quite psychotic. Just by looking at him you can tell that he is monstrous, and is giving this message across. I think that the television can also be seen as representation, because the monster comes out of it. First of all, scholars have contemplated the idea that there is a possibility that there were two men in each occasion and that Mark has left one demoniac out of the picture. Since Mark, is said by scholars to have written at least two decades before any of the evangelicals. While this might be understood in Mark 10:46, when he mentions by name one of the blind men or perhaps only one of them continued to followed Jesus, this is more of a problem in this passage. What would have been the reason for the author of Mark to leave one person out? In the case of the two demoniacs is it not more frightening and more dangerous and therefore a more significant of a miracle to be challenged by two demonized men than one? It is difficult to understand why the two Mark and Luke, who of course may have never read Matthew, would be so consistently different without any reason or hidden agendas. Secondly, some experts have disputed that it is merely the nature of miracle stories to grow in the telling. This elucidation is totally unsophisticated and simplistic. The Prevalence Of Tommy John Surgery The prevalence of Tommy John surgery, reconstruction of the Ulnar Collateral Ligament in the elbow, in Major League Baseball pitchers has been growing significantly over the past fifteen years. This injury results from overuse of the elbow joints as a result of thousands of pitches over many years. According to Liu et al, an overall increase occurred in the number of UCL reconstructions performed on MLB pitchers from 1999 to 2014. No more than fourteen MLB pitchers underwent surgery in any one year between 1999 and 2005, but seven of the next nine years has seen the number surpass this mark, culminating in highs of 35 surgeries in 2012 and 30 in 2014. They also found a revision rate of 13.2% over the same time period, meaning that roughly one in eight pitchers who undergo Tommy John surgery once will likely require it at least one more time in their career. Furthermore, the total number of revisions from 2012 to 2014 (21) exceeds the total number of revisions from 2003 to 2011 (20) with no signs of this trend slowing down. Ideally, the more income a person has, the more freedom and power this person is able to exercise. However, business moguls and government have been known to exploit this fundamental feature of market economy and use it to their advantage by harboring money (power). But before I put on my tin foil hat and start spewing on about the government, allow me to ask this question: Where does this system come from? I believe in order understand the oppressive issues of this system, it s crucial to understand the conditions that formulated it. It s safe to say that American government is a descendent of English government. The colonies along the east coast of North America were settled by mostly English settlers in the 17th and 18th centuries. As the English travelled across the Atlantic Ocean, they not only extended the rule of the English monarchy but also transported their cultural heritage as well. Subsequently, the colonists revolted against English monarch, King George III, during the American Revolutionary War in the late 18th century. Simply put, colonists felt devalued and exploited by the English ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Shakespeare has the ability to reveal a human character with an exceptional use of language. He allows us to see more than just words on the paper; we re given a multi dimensional insight into a character. Usually his characters aren t as straight forward as black or white, they are invariably more complex. Edmund for example, it s easy to present him as the villain but Shakespeare also shows us a sorry side to him as he attempts an apology before he dies. Eventually the Fool gets a glimmer of hope back from Lear when he realises his mistakes. ‘I did her wrong he says about Cordelia. At this point the Fool switches back to being light hearted as he realises stressing the point would only bring Lear down. Some critics say The Fool is responsible for pushing Lear over the edge. I like to think it was necessary for Lear to go through madness so he can truly appreciate the consequences of his actions. The Fool was helping Lear to ‘see better . Finally Lear s conscience catches up with him at least to an extent when he says ‘poor fool and knave I have one part in my heart that s sorry for thee. • 27. Symbolism In The Fall Of The House Of Usher The term gothic is used to describe a work of literature characterized by the elements of mystery, gloom, and fear. Combing the idea of gothic literature with Edgar Allan Poe s single effect yields a completely terrifying masterpiece. There are a multitude of themes and symbols that can be pulled from this work, but it is the narrator s description of his ambiguous setting that brings on the gothic undertones of mystery, gloom, and fear in Edgar Allan Poe s The Fall of the House of Usher. The first gothic undertone cleverly stashed away in the story is the mysterious ambiance of the setting. In the beginning of the story, the location of the Usher house is never given to the readers for several reasons. This lack of location aids Poe in creating a mysterious setting without him specifying it. This effectively leaves readers in an unknown place that they know nothing about, which adds to the overall mysterious tone of the setting . Upon entering the house the narrator says that he is conducted through many dark and intricate passages (Poe 475). From this point on, readers do not have any inkling as to where the narrator is in the house, barring several descriptions of several rooms the narrator resides in. Not only is the setting ambiguous, but the overall time frame in never given to readers as well.. No specified date is ever presented throughout the entire story and readers are only aware of the fact that several days have passed here and there. The lack of detail ... • 28. Theme Of Satire In Lazarillo De Tormes Lazarillo de Tormes is a famous work of Spanish literature published anonymously. The novel is written in the first person. Lazarillo de Tormes is known as a picaresque novel in that the novel is written about a character of the lower class instead of a hero or upper class character. The novel has several themes, but the theme that is constant throughout the novel is appearance versus reality. The author utilizes several rhetorical devices in the novel which add emphasis to the story. The novel, which was banned by the Spanish Crown during the time of the Spanish inquisition, is the story of the birth and life Lazarillo de Tormes as he serves various masters and his struggle for survival. His struggles are real. Many of the rhetorical devices serve to add humor to the novel as well. The author uses satire to support the theme of appearance versus reality. The definition of satire is an attempt to ridicule, mock, or criticize something or someone with humorous content. Satire is a rhetorical device that is used throughout the novel. The author uses humor in the wake of misfortune. This is evident in the chapter where Lazarillo serves his first master, a blind man. He treated Lazarillo horribly and also starved him. Lazarillo learns many deceitful things from his master which will serve him well throughout his life. Lazarillo s goal was to get away from the blind man. An example of satire is the quote, What! You smelled the sausage and you couldn t smell the post? Ole ? Ole ? I jeered (Albert, Michael 17). Lazarillo was making fun of the blind man for being able to smell the difference in the sausage and rotten turnips, but he did not smell the post that Lazarillo purposefully guided him into. Lazarillo was set on getting away from his first master and this is the clever way that Lazarillo gets away. He leaves without knowing the condition of his first master. In the end, Lazarillo did manage to outwit the blind man. The author s portrayal of the clergy can be considered satire as well. The clergy is portrayed very negatively in the novel. The clergy is not noble, honest or Christ like which is what people normally equate with a man that holds such a position. According to T. Anthony Perry, there is a high ... These articles came from different time periods in which there was a need for change in music. The artists discussed in these articles took a chance, and experimented to create a new sound that the audience enjoyed. Other important similarities include the specific changes made in the music, and what made the sound more popular. Despite the similarities and differences, these articles have also taught me much about the history of rock and roll including; the effects of change in music, and the imagination and creativity behind it. When comparing the articles, one can determine that they are similar. On Wax looks at the introduction of new music and technology in the 1920s that revolutionized the music industry. However, What Songs the Beatles Sang, looks at the change in music during the time of the British Invasion, and why the Beatles were successful. In On Wax¸ it stated that in the 1920s, there was change of instrumentation in nearly all orchestral pieces (Whiteman and McBride, 11). Logos is an appeal to logical reasoning and how a writer puts together a cohesive, flowing argument. Ethos is an appeal to a writer s credibility and good character, while pathos is an appeal to the emotions of the audience. The Great White Way by Debra J. The Persian War And The Ottoman Empire Of Persia Essay Persian War The Persian Wars were a series of conflicts between the Achaemenid Empire of Persia (modern day Iran) and Greek city states that started in 499 BC and lasted until 449 BC. The collision between the fractious political world of the Greeks and the enormous empire of the Persians began when Cyrus the Great conquered the Greek inhabited region of Ionia in 547 BC. Struggling to rule the independent minded cities of Ionia, the Persians appointed tyrants to rule each of them. This would prove to be the source of much trouble for the Greeks and Persians alike. Before digging into the implications of Persian War, it is necessary to examine the process of this war. In the first stage of the war between Persia and Greece, the Persian armies were led by king Darius I (550 486 B. C.). The Persians lost to the Athenians and their Greek allies. One of the famous land battles was Marathon in 490 B.C. The Persians were defeated by the Athenians and the Plataeans. News of the victory was delivered by a messenger who ran the 26 miles from Marathon to Athens, and who died afterwards. The second stage of the war saw the Persians arrive on the Greek shore with perhaps as many as 2,000,000 men, between their army and navy, under the command of king Xeres I (519 465 B.C.), son of the deceased Darius I. An advanced party of only 5,000 Greeks, including Spartans, Phocians and Locrians, under the command of one of the Spartan kings, Leonidas (a descendent of Hercules), held off the ... • 46. What Is The Shift In The Tortilla Curtain In T.S. Boyle s novel, The Tortilla Curtain, the suburban upper middle class culture collides on multiple occasions into that of poverty stricken illegal Mexican immigrants. These collisions of two vastly different cultures begin when Delaney, a self proclaimed liberal humanist crashes his car into Cándido, an illegal immigrant. These collisions of foiling cultures result in a negative shift of virtues for Delaney. Boyle utilizes the negative shift in Delaney to comment on the upper middle class individuals who identify themselves with positive values who never practice those values when their own comfort and wellbeing is at risk. Following the crash, Delaney s self proclaimed liberal humanist values start to be questioned. After Delaney identifies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the beginning of the novel, Delaney is shown as an activist against walls that are being planned to be built around his community. Delaney states how as a liberal humanist, he is against the building of the wall because it is wrong to separate themselves from society because they have more money. Delaney s stance on the construction of the wall and his values shift after Delaney s car crash into Cándido and the forest fire incident. After the car crash and the forest fire incident, Delaney becomes an active advocate for the construction of the wall. Delaney argues that the construction of the wall is necessary to ensure the safety of the people who live in his community. Delaney s shift in stance on the construction of the wall was caused solely by the interactions he had with Cándido and the two Mexican individuals; in both events, Delaney was never negatively impacted. However, because of the inconvenience that these events caused Delaney, Delaney wishes to build the wall to prevent future inconveniences from what he believes was caused by illegal Mexican ... • 47. Interaction Between Humans And The Environment Theme 1: Interaction between humans and the environment. About 10,000 BCE, the area that is now the Sahara desert was a grassy steppe land. Humans prospered by hunting wild cattle, collecting grains, or catching fish. After about 9000 BCE, people of eastern Sudan domesticated cattle and became nomadic herders. After 5000 BCE, the northern half of Africa became hot and dry, driving humans and animals to gather around bodies of water. Both Egypt and Nubia relied heavily on agriculture at least by 5000 BCE. At first, Egyptians easily cultivated, while Nubians had to create fields. Eventually, demographic pressures forced Egypt to create sophisticated methods of agriculture. Theme 2: Development and interactions of cultures. For thousands of years, when the Sudanese buried kings they also routinely executed a group of royal servants and entombed them with the king to serve him in the afterlife. Royal servants of Egyptian and Nubian kingdoms were also part of rituals similar to those from Sudan. The Sudanese developed religious beliefs that reflected their agricultural society, recognizing a single divine force as the source of good and evil, which they associated with rain. The early pharaohs claimed to be gods living on Earth in human form. Egyptians associated early pharaohs with Horus, the sky god. Later, they viewed rulers as offspring of Amon, a sun god. They considered the pharaoh a human sun overseeing affairs on the earth, and believed the pharaoh merged with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
