The Ganga is an important River both from a socio economic and religous view point. However,
it was being polluted by domestic and industrial activities along its banks. The Ganga Action Plan
was initiated in 1986 to clean up the River and protect it from further pollution. The Ganges
provides ecosystem services which are of vital importance for the inhabitants of the Ganges River
basin. However, the water quality of the Ganga River deteriorates downstream. Indian cities, e.g.,
Kanpur, Allahabad, Patna, and Varanasi, are local hotspots of pollution and poor water quality.
Downstream of these cities the river’s water quality improves, but never restores to its original
state. This study in order to stimulate future discussions and actions on improving the water quality
and ecology of the Ganga River. The first objective of this study is to assess the impact of urban
activity on Ganges water quality and to identify and quantify major pollution sources into the
Ganges. The second objective included the search for an existing biotic index which can analyze
Ganges ecological status. The main result of this study to provide an overview and trend of the
water quality of Ganga River, which can be used for future development plans of the Ganga River
and if we ignore this then we have to face revealed alarmingly high levels of nutrient- and organic
pollution in the Ganges.

There have been several government initiatives taken for abatement of pollution in India. Here are three key examples:
National Afforestation Program and Act-2016: The National Afforestation Program was launched in 2016 with the aim of increasing forest cover in the country. The program aims to bring 33% of the country's land under forest and tree cover. The National Afforestation Act, which was also introduced in 2016, provides for the conservation, development, and sustainable management of forests. National River Conservation Plan: The National River Conservation Plan was launched in 1985 with the objective of cleaning up and conserving India's rivers. The plan covers 31 rivers in 14 states and aims to improve the water quality of these rivers. Under this plan, various measures are taken to control pollution, including setting up of sewage treatment plants, effluent treatment plants, and solid waste management facilities. Formation of National Green Tribunal: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) was formed in 2010 as a specialized court to handle environmental disputes and cases related to the enforcement of environmental laws. The NGT has jurisdiction over all civil cases related to environmental issues and has the power to issue orders and judgments related to the protection and conservation of the environment. The formation of the NGT has helped to improve the enforcement of environmental laws and has led to more effective management of environmental issues. The National Afforestation Program (NAP) was launched in 2002 to increase the forest cover of the country and to improve the ecological balance. In 2016, the government of India enacted the National Afforestation Program and Fund Act, 2016 to provide a legal framework for the implementation of the program.
The main objectives of the National Afforestation Program and Fund Act, 2016 are: To increase the forest cover of the country and improve the quality of forests.To enhance the capacity of the forest-dependent communities and to promote sustainable forest management practices.
To encourage private sector participation in afforestation and reforestation activities.
Under the Act, the National Afforestation Program Fund is established to provide financial support for afforestation and reforestation activities. The Fund is managed by a National Afforestation and Eco-Development Board, which is responsible for the implementation and monitoring of the program. The National Afforestation Program and Fund Act, 2016 is a significant step towards the protection and conservation of forests in India. It provides a legal framework for the implementation of the.he National River Conservation Plan (NRCP) is a comprehensive program launched by the Government of India to conserve and rejuvenate the polluted and degraded rivers in the country. The program was launched in 1985 with the objective of improving the water quality of rivers and their ecological health.

The Ganga is an important River both from a socio economic and religous view point. However,
it was being polluted by domestic and industrial activities along its banks. The Ganga Action Plan
was initiated in 1986 to clean up the River and protect it from further pollution. The Ganges
provides ecosystem services which are of vital importance for the inhabitants of the Ganges River
basin. However, the water quality of the Ganga River deteriorates downstream. Indian cities, e.g.,
Kanpur, Allahabad, Patna, and Varanasi, are local hotspots of pollution and poor water quality.
Downstream of these cities the river’s water quality improves, but never restores to its original
state. This study in order to stimulate future discussions and actions on improving the water quality
and ecology of the Ganga River. The first objective of this study is to assess the impact of urban
activity on Ganges water quality and to identify and quantify major pollution sources into the
Ganges. The second objective included the search for an existing biotic index which can analyze
Ganges ecological status. The main result of this study to provide an overview and trend of the
water quality of Ganga River, which can be used for future development plans of the Ganga River
and if we ignore this then we have to face revealed alarmingly high levels of nutrient- and organic
pollution in the Ganges.
Improving Water Security in Water Stressed Bagmati River Basin, Nepal (2)

GANGA ACTION PLAN
The Ganga Action Plan was launched in 1986 to reduce pollution in the Ganga river, but efforts to decrease pollution levels continued beyond 2000 without success. Reasons for failure included a lack of cooperation between government bodies, inadequate monitoring, and insufficient public involvement. In 2009, the National Ganga River Basin Authority was constituted to plan, implement, and coordinate Ganga conservation efforts, including securing World Bank funds for pollution abatement projects. Addressing untreated sewage discharge, inadequate river flows, and lack of enforcement against industrial pollution will be needed for comprehensive solutions.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Ganga Action Plan Ganga runs its course of over 2500 kms from Gangotri in the Himalayas to Ganga Sagar in the Bay of Bengal through 29 cities with population over 1,00,000 (�class- I cities�), 23 cities with population between 50,000 and 1,00,000 (�class-II cities�), and about 48 towns. It is a river with which the people of India are attached spiritually and emotionally. Department of Environment, in December 1984, prepared an action plan for immediate reduction of pollution load on the river Ganga. The Cabinet approved the GAP (Ganga Action Plan)in April 1985 as a 100 per cent centrally sponsored scheme.

Ganga Action Plan To oversee the implementation of the GAP and to lay down policies and programmes, Government of India constituted the CGA (Central Ganga Authority)in February 1985, renamed as the NRCA (National River Conservation Authority)in September 1995, under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister. The Government also established the GPD (Ganga Project Directorate)in June 1985 as a wing of Department of Environment, to execute the projects under the guidance and supervision of the CGA. The Government renamed the GPD as the NRCD (National River Conservation Directorate)in June 1994.
- 15. Ganga Action Plan The GAP-I envisaged to intercept, divert and treat 882 mld (Million litres per day) out of 1340 mld of wastewater, generated in 25 class- I towns in 3 States of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal. The NRCD had scheduled the GAP-I for completion by March 1990, but extended it progressively up to March 2000. While the GAP-I was still in progress, the CGA decided in February 1991 to take up the GAP-II, covering the following pollution abatement works: (a) On the tributaries of river Ganga, viz. Yamuna, Damodar and Gomati. (b) In 25 class-I towns left out in Phase-I. (c) In the other polluting towns along the river. The CCEA (Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs) approved the GAP-II in various stages during April 1993 to October 1996 (Annex I). The States of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Delhi and Haryana were to implement the GAP-II by treating 1912 mld of sewage. GAP-II is scheduled for completion by December 2001
